The day did not start off as well as Celia had hoped. Having barely slept the night before, she had completely zonked out. If it hadn't been for Tiny curling up on her chest she had no doubt she would still be tucked up in bed. As it was, she had precisely... She glanced at her watch, one minute to get to class. Yikes! She was going to be late. Running flat out she made her way along the passages and rounded the corner. Spotting the classrooms up ahead she slowed enough to get her breath back.
"Five points from Slytherin for tardiness Miss Croal. Do not let it happen again" Professor Crispen drawled as she entered the room looking completely disheveled. Indicating for her to sit in the empty seat at the front, he stood up and addressed the class. "The subtle science that is potion making is most difficult as there is very little call for the wand, however, it is crucial to wizardkind. Can you tell me why?" Rose stuck her hand up as Professor Crispen glanced around the room. Bringing his attention back to the front he asked "Miss Weasley?"
"Potions are used for healing, sir."
"Indeed, however, they cannot cure all maladies. Brewed correctly, one can not only heal the sick and injured but make their own luck or love." He peered around at the girls. "Brewed incorrectly, the results can be dire or prove to be fatal. Therefore, I expect each one of you to follow the instructions in the textbook with utmost care. Now, turn to page ten. Five points will be awarded to the house that produces the perfect Antidote to Common Poisons first. Record your observations, begin." As everyone began clattering around, getting their ingredients and equipment out, he wandered around the room.
"Here" Rose said, pushing a Poptart across to Celia.
"Than..."
"I'll have that if you don't mind." Professor Crispen held out his hand.
"But sir, I'm starving" Celia grumbled as her stomach gave a low growl, proving her point.
"Then perhaps you should rise early enough to dine" he retorted, arching an eyebrow. With the poptart in his hand he wandered back to his seat and peered over his desk.
Celia glanced at the instructions. "One bezoar" she said, placing it in the mortar and crushing it with the pestle. She glanced back. "Four measures," she wasn't sure whether that meant heaped or leveled, so erred on the side of caution and added them to the cauldron. Picking up the two bags, she wondered which was the standard ingredient.
"It's that one" Rose chirped, seeing the confused look on Celia's face and pointing to the one in her left hand.
"Thanks." Celia added two measures to the bezoar powder and scanned down the page. She lit the burner and let her cauldron warm to a medium heat before counting to five. On her fifth count she waved her wand, peered inside and took note. Quickly glancing around she spotted Albus and Scorpius a couple desks back and nodded to them. They smiled back briefly before bowing their heads and animatedly adding another ingredient. As far as she could tell everyone was either adding ingredients or scribbling down their observations.
"When you have finished snooping, Miss Croal" Professor Crispen said, pulling her attention back to the front.
Celia quickly looked away from his piercing gaze and cleared a space on the table so she could write. Glancing at her watch, she noted the time then peered back into the cauldron. She noted the hue and distinct smell and began to scratch away. Writing with a quill will take some getting used to, she mused, as several large splodges of ink hit the parchment. After eighty-five minutes had passed she added a pinch of unicorn horn, stirred twice clockwise and jotted down its hue, consistency and smell. Finally, she added two mistletoe berries, stirred twice anti-clockwise and gave the potion one final wave of her wand. She straightened up, jotted down her final observation and added "could do with something for the smell" at the foot of the parchment.
Professor Crispen stood up, went to the back of the room as everyone finished up and moved along the rows peering in the cauldrons. "Forgot to wave your wand Miss Bennett?" he asked as a black globular substance spewed from her cauldron. Angela's face reddened. He moved to the next row. "Almost, Mr Potter. A little more unicorn horn next time." As he approached the front row Celia began to panic, thinking that the smell was perhaps a bad sign. Warily, she sniffed at Rose's cauldron but she couldn't tell if it was the same or not. "Very nice, Miss Weasley" Professor Crispen said before turning his head to the side and peering into Celia's. "Five points will be awarded to both houses. Well done girls. Leave Your papers on my desk before you go" he said, dismissing the class. As the chairs scraped back noisily, he glanced down at Celia's parchment. "Nice observation Miss Croal. Tell me, what would you add to the potion?"
"Well sir, given where the bezoar's been I'd add mint" Celia smiled.
"That would certainly make it taste a little nicer" he chuckled. "Hurry along now, your friends are waiting on you."
Celia didn't need telling twice. Grabbing her bag she bolted out the door. "Hey, wait up guys!" she called as Albus, Rose and Scorpius emerged from the dungeon into the entrance hall.
As Albus and Scorpius burst out laughing Rose turned and hurried across to Celia. "Here" she said, whipping out her wand. With a swish and a flick Celia's hair tied into a smooth ponytail.
"You'll need to teach me that," she grinned. Together, the quartet headed out into the grounds and went to sit by the lake.
OoO
"Nice day for flying" Scorpius remarked, eager to get to class.
Celia looked up. It was a clear, sunny day but in her opinion humans were not meant to fly. If they had, they would have been born with wings not broomsticks and she had no intention of flying anywhere. She eyed the broomsticks that lay out ahead of them.
"Look sharp, come on now, line up, one to a broomstick" Madam Hooch barked. Everyone took their positions eagerly. Everyone except Celia that is, who was looking positively green. "Raise your right hand over your broom and say up."
A chorus of "up" rang out as each student tried to get their brooms to leap into their hands. Scorpius' broom went willingly into his, as did Albus'. Rose's broom rose a little before thudding back to the ground. After a few more attempts it leapt into her hand and she beamed from ear to ear. Soon everyone was standing with their broom firmly held in their hands. All except Celia, whose broom sensing her fear skittered away from her as fast as it could go.
Madam Hooch pointed her wand at the fleeing broom, "Accio!" Within seconds the broom had returned. She handed it to Celia who had been slowly backing off. "Alright, when I blow my whistle I want you to swing your leg across and push up like this" she said demonstrating. She landed, gave a shrill of the whistle and watched as they each climbed on and pushed off. "Miss Croal" she said coming to stand before her. Everyone stopped to watch.
Celia swung her leg over and pushed. "I did it!" she squeaked, delighted with herself.
"Both feet Miss Croal." Madam Hooch shook her head.
By the end of the lesson Celia had managed to get on her tiptoes, which was a vast improvement. Several of the students had managed to circle the grounds while the others had a race in the air trying out a few different flying techniques. If Celia hadn't been so terrified she may have actually enjoyed watching them but her stomach was lurching and all she wanted to do was get out of there as fast as she could. So, when Madam Hooch gave the order to return the brooms, she hastily returned hers then sped away to her room, praying the ground would open up and swallow her.
"I don't understand how she can be so afraid of heights" Scorpius said between mouthfuls of potato, while sitting at the Gryffindor table tucking into his lunch.
"You've had eleven years to get used to flying. Celia's only just found out she's a witch and muggles don't fly, well not outside a plane" Rose reasoned.
"Suppose. You reckon she'll come to DADA?"
"I don't know. I haven't seen anyone turn that colour who wasn't in a hospital ward" Rose replied.
"What are you doing sitting there, Malfoy?" the Slytherin prefect asked.
"It isn't against the rules. He can sit where he likes unless there is an official occasion" Rose piped up. Silently she wondered why Albus wasn't being questioned as well, until she saw the disdainful look the prefect shot him. Typical, Slytherin and their pureblood mania. It pleased her a little to think how tainted they must feel now that they not only had a muggle born but a half blood and a defect within their midst, until she thought how Celia would be getting treated and her heart sank.
OoO
Thinking things couldn't get any worse, Celia braced herself and headed to Defense Against The Dark Arts or DADA for short. This was her favourite lesson so far. She'd had to identify several magical creatures before being taught a few basic spells. Her teacher had been most impressed by her non verbal command of the Petrificus Totalus spell and she had been made to round up a few sprites before the end of class. The only drawback she thought was that now she had a foot long essay to write and had to read a chapter of the text book before next lesson. She was glad she had decided to attend class rather than wallow in her room as the excitement had banished the thoughts of the dreadful flying lesson from her mind.
Feeling much better she headed along to the great hall and snaffled several large helpings of roast beef. Albus looked around him and under the table. "What are you doing?" she asked.
"Looking to see where you're putting it all" he eyed her plate, "that's your fourth helping! Only other person I know who can eat that much is uncle Ron."
Having caught the end of the conversation James burst out laughing. "Hey squirt, you coming to the tryouts?" he asked Albus.
"I thought they were on Saturday?" Albus queried.
"Yeah but we're getting a bit of practice in before then." He nodded towards a few of the Gryffindors at the table.
Albus looked worriedly at Celia. "Maybe" he said giving his brother a half smile.
"Celia why don't you come along. I promise you'll enjoy it, especially since you'll have both feet on the ground." James winked and headed out with his friends towards the quidditch pitch.
Celia sat there, her face having turned a nice beetroot colour and stared after him. "He's right you know" Scorpius mumbled beside her.
"Oh, alright" Celia sighed, pushing her plate away from her, glad that she at least would not be up in the air.
As they made their way across the grounds they could see James and the other Gryffindors circling around the stadium.
"Hey Hagrid" Rose chirped as he approached them on his way up to the school.
"Hello there Rose, Albus, Celia and Scorpius and where would you lot be headed off to on a night like this?"
"James is practicing for the tryouts." Albus pointed towards his brother who was tossing the quaffle to his team mate.
"Well make sure you are back before curfew. You don't want to go getting into trouble like your parents now do ya?" He gave them a beardy grin and wandered off. Rose made a mental note to ask her father all about his antics at school the next time she wrote to him, having already send her owl off this morning to let him know that she had reached Hogwarts safely, been sorted into Gryffindor and was excited to get to her first class.
Celia looked around the stalls as she climbed up to sit on a high bench. She noticed that there were towers for each house spaced around the pitch as well as the benches between them. The pitch itself she noted, had goalposts at either end much like basketball but instead of having nets they looked more like the circular ended sticks that you got in bubble makers. The three posts were of varying heights and sizes and closely spaced together in a straight line. James was floating in the air in front of the smallest hoop waiting on his team mate throwing it towards him.
"You get ten points for getting the quaffle, that's the big red ball, through the hoop" Scorpius explained as he followed her gaze.
Celia watched as one of the chasers flew towards James, tossed the quaffle high in the air and spun his broom around to whack the ball through the larger central hoop. James sped towards it and flicked his broom outwards sending the quaffle hurling in the opposite direction. She threw glances at the players then down at the ground. It made her dizzy to look at. "It's awfully high" she murmured.
"Only way to play it." Scorpius smiled and gave her a reassuring squeeze. "Those two," he pointed at a couple with clubs in their hands, "are beaters. They try and hit the bludger at the other team so they can get possession of the quaffle."
"That's the big red one, right?"
"Yeah." Scorpius was pleased at how easily she was following along. As the beaters batted the bludgers towards the chasers, he scoured the field looking for the seeker and the golden snitch. Spotting the golden wings not far from the bottom of the field he pointed to it. "See that small golden ball?" he asked.
Celia followed his finger's direction and saw the fluttering wings before it sped away again. "Uh-huh."
"That's the snitch. If the seeker" he pointed at the only other player in the air, "catches it, he scores 150 points and ends the game. The team with the most points wins."
"So, basically catch the snitch and you win?"
"Yep, unless your team is terrible." He winked and looked up at the Gryffindors who were in formation flying around the pitch.
Before long Celia had stopped glancing at the ground and was completely captivated by the sport. She thought James did a great job blocking the goals and had even jumped up and shouted at him when he missed. By the time they had wrapped up for the night Scorpius, Albus and rose were rolling around on the benches.
"You enjoyed it then?" James asked running to catch up with them as they wandered back across the grounds. "I told you would."
"Yeah, well as long as I'm not the one up there." She beamed at him. "You were great."
"Thanks. I wouldn't mind being a beater but that's Albus' specialty." Celia glanced at Albus. He was a beater? She looked him over, hardly believing that the slight frame of the boy that walked beside her could wield the power to do any damage. Not going by what she had seen tonight.
"Don't let his size fool you. He has a mean swing." He grinned, waved his hand and sped off to catch the rest of his team.
"Night, Rose." Celia said as they walked through the large doors.
"Aren't you coming to the library to do your homework with us?" Rose asked, looking at her questioningly.
"I think better when I'm alone. See you at breakfast?"
"Make sure you're on time." She giggled and hugged her tight.
§"You are not going to believe the day I've had"§ Celia hissed at Tiny as she removed her homework from her bag.
