Chapter Four
“Ah, Sirius…I am glad you could join us. Please, sit.” Dumbledore smiled in an attempt to soothe the boy whose eyes were narrowed in suspicion. The round office contained several other people from the ministry, they looked very severe and intimidating as they flanked the Headmasters desk holding briefcases. Sirius reluctantly sat down, his eyes darting from one man to the other. “Now then, this is Mr. Fallows and Mr. Greengage from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Beast division…”
Sirius paled and his fingers dug small crescents into the arms of his chair. “What do they want?” He asked quickly, his bright silver eyes continuously darting around as if searching for an escape route.
“We wish to do our jobs and ensure you sign the register of known werewolves.” The one called Fallows said sternly, he was a grim man with a heavily lined face and world weary eyes. He rummaged inside his briefcase and withdrew a stack of yellowed parchments, these he lay down on Dumbledore’s desk and placed a battered looking quill on them. “Sign your name, current address and marital status on these…”
“Why?” Sirius asked, his brows drawn into a frown. “I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“All werewolves must submit themselves to the register, this is so we can keep a continuous eye on you and ensure you do not cause harm to others.”
“But I…” Sirius looked at Dumbledore, his eyes pleading.
“I am sorry Sirius, in this I am powerless.” Dumbledore said gravely. “A werewolf, if left to its own devices, will kill and maim indiscriminately…you are not in control during a full moon. Not anymore.”
Sirius’ mouth twisted in irritation and more than a little fear. “I don’t want…”
“What you want does not come into this, Mr. Black. We are here to keep a very close eye on you…if we had our way you would not even be in school.”
“We have already discussed this Mr. Greengage, I am taking all the appropriate precautions as I have been with Mr. Lupin and he has not had an incident…”
“Until now.” Greengage said angrily, glaring in Sirius’ direction as he cut off the Headmaster’s words.
“I will admit that this was an unfortunate case however it was due to a youths mistakes and I am certain young Lupin regrets it most deeply.”
Greengage looked as if he didn’t believe a Werewolf could feel anything like regret but he held his tongue under the Headmasters imperious stare. Sirius felt a lick of anger at the look on the men’s faces, they were gazing at him as if he was something disgusting they had dug up underneath a stone, his fingers tightened on the arms of the chair and his lids lowered as a look of insolent hate graced his aristocratic features. “What if I refuse to register?” He asked in a deceptively calm voice.
“If you refuse you will be taken to Azkaban without trial, locked in a cell and left to rot.” Mr. Fallows said quietly. “We have to be able to ensure the safety of the wider community, Mr. Black.”
Sirius looked at the quill for a moment. “Azkaban…All over a silly piece of parchment?” He sighed and leaned forward, he picked up the quill in one shaking hand and gazed down at the list of signatures before signing it in a flourish. When it came to writing the Potter’s Address he paused and something occurred to him…what if the Potter’s didn’t want a Werewolf under their roof? What would he do? Where would he go? What if he accidentally put them in danger? They had been so kind to him since he had fled his parent’s house that the thought of hurting them or causing them trouble made his heart ache. Slowly he lowered the quill. “I…I don’t…” He looked up at Dumbledore and silently asked for help.
“The Potter’s are unaware of your condition?” Dumbledore asked quietly. Sirius swallowed and nodded stiffly. “They have a right to know, Sirius.” He smiled kindly. “You should put down their address and if it changes alert the Ministry.”
Sirius nodded quickly and swallowed the lump of guilt in his throat, he wrote the address and set down the quill. Fallows picked it up and inspected it before stuffing it back into his briefcase. “We will be watching and if we have any more incidents we will be forced to act, Dumbledore.”
“I understand, shall I show you out?” He stood but the Ministry officials declined with a shake of their heads.
“No, no…we know the way. Thank you.” They left together and Sirius watched the door close behind them, he slumped in his seat and sighed so his fringe fluttered in the gust of breath.
“Sirius, I understand that this is taking some adjustments on your part but you cannot live in denial forever. What Remus did to you has changed you forever, you cannot go back to the life you once lived.”Sirius gazed into Dumbledore’s eyes and knew he was right, he knew deep in his soul that he would never be the same again. He knew that all the vague, unformed plans he had had for his future would never come true. He was a monster, he was going to be forced into the shadows to live surrounded by hatred and anger for something he couldn’t help. It wasn’t like he wasn’t used to that, he had lived with it for fifteen years of his life, but now he would receive that hatred from strangers, from people like the Ministry men who thought him tainted by some kind of vile disease. He shivered slightly even though the room was warm. He said nothing but lowered his head so hair obscured his expression.

That night Sirius sat up in his bed with his curtains shut tightly against the rest of the dorm, he rested a piece of parchment on a book which lay across his knees. He dipped his quill into a pot of ink and began attempting to explain to the Potter’s that he was a monster. The night wore on as he wrote until he drew away and re-read what he had written;
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Potter,
I know I have never written to you since you took me in after I fled my parent’s home, but there is something you have to know. It is drawing closer to the end of summer now and I fear that what I have to say may come as a shock but there is no way to soften the blow; I am a Werewolf. It happened last month, it was an accident and I was stupid to have got myself into that kind of situation however it happened and now I have Lycanthropy. I should have warned you the minute it happened but it has taken me a long time to come to terms with it, I apologise. This was not how I saw my life going to be honest, I understand that if you are afraid that I may endanger you I shall leave and find my own place as soon as I can but please understand how utterly grateful I am to you. You and your son have saved my life, and even if I cannot truly express how much your kindness means to me on paper or with words know that I will forever be in your debt. You accepted a poor, homeless, broken boy into your home and treated him like a second son…there are no words in any language in the world that can describe my gratitude. I can only say thank you.
Sirius Orion Black.
Sirius sighed and put the letter aside, he folded it neatly and sealed it with a blob of wax from a candle that stood on his bedside table. He spent a moment gazing at the black blob and thought how odd it was not to see his family crest embossed into it, but he had no right to use that anymore so he contented himself with the blank seal. He thought it was oddly appropriate considering he was now disinherited and had no family, he thought the blank wax suited him.
Remus woke to the sounds of a quill scratching against parchment and slowly sat up, he rubbed sleep from his eyes and pulled his bed curtains open to see a single candle lit on Sirius’ bedside table. He watched a familiar hand slide between the curtains and pick up the candle carefully before bringing it inside the closed off bed, a minute later it was returned to its holder and the room fell silent. He waited a moment before walking quietly over to Sirius’ bed and pulling the curtain aside, he saw Sirius lying on his side but he wasn’t asleep. His eyes were open and he was gazing up at Remus with a sad expression, slowly he lifted his arm and pushed the duvet down so Remus slid in beside him and once again closed the bed curtains. “Who were you writing to?” Remus asked.
“James’ parents.” Sirius replied quietly, he smiled bitterly. “I told them what I was.”
Remus only nodded as he drew Sirius to him. “I’m sorry.”
“You keep saying it but it’s not your fault.” Sirius replied with a sigh.
“You said you’d never forgive me.”
“And I won’t.” Sirius lifted his head and his eyes darkened as his fingers played absently with his pyjama top. “I can’t forgive you for tearing me away from James.”
Remus took a shaky breath before closing his eyes. “I wish I hadn’t…I wish I could change it all.”
“We can’t so it’s pointless thinking about it. Shoulda, woulda, coulda…as they say.” Sirius pushed both his hands into Remus’ hair and drew their lips together. “I will never forget James…But I know it has to end.” He breathed and kissed Remus softly. “I just want to warn you…don’t fall in love with me.” He pulled away enough to look into Remus’ eyes, they were slightly wide with shock. “I’m not someone anyone can love…not normally. I’m not fluffy, I’m not kind. What is between us needs to stay between the wolves, love complicates, love hurts and I don’t want to hurt you…”
Remus rolled Sirius onto his back and looked down into his face. “Sirius…”
“I mean it, Moony. You can’t love me because I will destroy you.”
Remus frowned at that. “But James loves you!” He said irritably.
“He does but James is different…he’s stronger than anyone else I know. He’s got so much love and kindness surrounding him already that it would be an impossible feat to break him. Whereas you…” He lifted a hand and brushed his knuckles across Remus’ wounded cheek, two long scratches marred his skin. “You’re much more delicate.”
“I’m not a fucking doll, Sirius!”
“I didn’t say that…I mean that you and I…we’re…similar. We both know too much hurt and anger, we both are far too familiar with hatred. You see? I can break you into a thousand pieces just like you could me…we’re better off leaving emotions out of this.”
They looked at each other a moment and Remus felt that tell tale flutter of his heart as it beat in his chest, he sighed and lowered his head so he was resting his forehead against Sirius’ chest. “This is ridiculous.” He whispered with a weak little chuckle. “You know it’s too late for that now.”
Sirius lifted his hand and ran it softly through Remus’ hair, he sighed and closed his eyes. “I’m sorry…I…I don’t want to hurt you.”
“I know…” Remus lifted his head and kissed Sirius on the lips. They lay like that for a while, gently exploring each other’s mouths with their tongues. “If this is the most powerful magic in existence then I would rather never know it.” He whispered as Sirius tangled his fingers in his hair and pulled his lips to his again.
“Mm…Better to never know…I never thought of loving anyone…never wanted to…” Sirius murmured between kisses which were rapidly becoming more heated. “But then James crept up on me…he was…like the sun…and he pulled me towards him…the more I struggled the closer I came to the edge and then I fell…”
“And did it hurt?” Remus pulled away a moment to look curiously into Sirius’ face.
“Yes…” Sirius muttered and smiled grimly. “It was like having my teeth extracted…but it was also nice. Like floating on a warm breeze…”
“How very eloquent Mr. Padfoot.” Remus said with a small giggle.
“Piss off, Moony.” Sirius’ grin suddenly brightened it was like a flash of bright light illuminated the bed before it went out again. “You know I reckon it would have been nice…” He said as he stroked hair from Remus’ face with a gentle finger.
“What would have?”
“You and me…” Sirius gazed into Remus’ eyes. “If things had been different…if James and I weren’t…maybe we could have had fun.”
Remus smiled slightly. “Maybe.” It fell again when he realised that things weren’t different, Sirius was in love with James and he would be for a very long time, if not forever. He leaned down and continued their kissing to prevent the jealousy and pain from choking him.
“Mmm yeah…” Sirius hissed, he pushed his hips up against Remus’ and felt him shiver as he pushed hands up under his shirt. “Moony…” He breathed and felt teeth on his throat. “Moony…more…”
“Sirius…” Remus whispered against his skin.
James lay on his back with one arm behind his head as he listened to his best friends fuck. He gazed up at the canopy of his bed and tried to control the anger and pain rising up in his chest, he took a shuddery breath as he heard Sirius cry out in a familiar way. James’ head was full of mental images of Sirius’ body slicked with sweat, his hair plastered to his forehead as it was during a particularly long session in bed. He could see that playful smirk on his lips, that glitter in his eyes as he came with James’ name on his lips. He closed his eyes and put his hand over them, he wasn’t sure how much more of it he could take before he went insane.
“Remus…” Sirius gasped as he wrapped his legs around Remus’ waist and drew him closer. They were kissing again, hands gripping hair so tightly it was painful as they moved in tandem. Their gasps of pleasure being swallowed by the other, their lips and tongues moving sloppily. “Oh…Oh fuck…” Sirius moaned as he pushed himself back against Remus’ invading cock.
Remus was swamped in pleasure, his eyes glued to the face of his partner his mind turned to so much useless jelly as his instinct drove him forward. He recorded every groan, every whisper of his name from Sirius’ delicious lips, every flutter of his eyelashes and he lost himself in those twin pools of moonlight.
James heard Sirius’ last muffled cry of passion and Remus’ gasp and knew they had cum. He rolled away from the noises, trying to block them out as he squeezed his eyes shut tightly. “Sirius…” He whispered into the dark and heard Sirius’ rough chuckle from the bed over. Somehow it was that sound over everything else he had heard that made him realise he was going to lose Sirius…and that thought made him want to scream.
