Author's Note: Although not stated before during the attack on the Department of Mysteries some of the Death Eaters caught were Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy along with Peter Pettigrew which of course cleared Sirius Black of all charges posthumously.
Eventually the crying slowed down; the tears stopping along with the gasping for air and the heartbreaking sobs. Draco continued to soothe Harry as best he could wishing there was more he could do for the other boy. He had the feeling Harry had been holding all this in for a long time and now that the dam had broken it had all come flowing out.
Harry slowly pulled away from Draco and then reached up to wipe the tears from his face. "I'm so sorry. I don't normally fall apart like that, especially not..."
"In public," Draco said at the same time Harry did. Draco nodded, "Father never wanted any form of emotional outbursts in public. In public we were to be stoical and appear aristocratic."
"I was not to be seen or heard," Harry said finding comfort in the camaraderie of knowing he wasn't the only one that had been forced to not make a sound or complaint.
"You want to know the first thing I did when I came home this year?" Draco asked. Seeing not only Harry nod, but the curiosity in those emerald eyes Draco told him. "I walked into the main area, picked up a vase that I knew father had paid a fortune for, threw it at a portrait of my father and screamed that I hated him. The portrait of him ran to another frame of course, but I do not know which one. He hasn't been back since, the bloody coward."
Harry laughed as he heard that. "I bet it felt good to do that, though, didn't it?"
"Yes it did. It felt like this great weight had been lifted from my shoulders," Draco told him with a big grin on his face. "Now we had an early breakfast so we might as well have our lunch a bit early as well. What would you like Harry?"
"Oh," Harry said and then had to think for a moment. "How about a sandwich with crisps?"
Draco nodded and stood up. "Binky," He called and a moment later the little elf arrived. "For lunch could you bring a selection of sandwiches and crisps; also some butterbeers, please. We would like it in about an hour?"
"Of course Master Draco sir. Binky bring all for you and Dobby's great Harry Potter sir," Binky said bouncing on the balls of his feet as he talked. He then vanished as quickly as he arrived.
Harry just shook his head. "I can't believe he called me that." He leaned back against the pillows finding he was a bit tired.
"Just shows the impression you made on him," Draco told him with a smile. Looking at Harry he could see that the other boy was tired even if Harry hadn't said anything on it. "Why don't you take a short kip while I write to my lawyer? I then have to get something from one of the other rooms; by the time I come back lunch should be here and you can be more refreshed."
"Sounds good. I am a bit knackered," Harry said even as his eyes started to droop shut. Crying the way he had not only tired him out physically, but emotionally as well. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he got more comfortable on the pillows. Closing his eyes he was soon sound asleep against the pillows.
Draco reached down to pull the blanket back over Harry; it had fallen when he'd been crying. He walked over to the desk and took a seat. He quickly wrote a letter to his attorney requesting a meeting as soon as possible; however, when he went to the part of the manor where the family owls were kept he noticed that there was another owl there with mail. Giving his owl the letter for his attorney he then took the letter from the new owl. "There are treats and water if you want. Are you to wait for a reply?" The owl bobbed his head and Draco nodded. "Very well." He turned the letter over and saw the official seal of Gringotts. He broke the seal and opened the letter. It was a notice about the reading of Sirius Black's will. It also asked for information about Harry Potter. The Goblins had sent several notices already to Harry Potter only to have them returned to them. He went over to the small table available there to quickly pen a reply; stating that he would be able to get word to Harry and that they both would be there for the reading. Sealing the letter up he gave it back to the owl. "Here you go," He said gently even as the owl took the letter and then flew off.
Draco went back to the study to look in on Harry, but saw that he was sleeping soundly. He shut the door quietly and went down to the family safe. He opened it up and took out two boxes in there, both of which contained wands that had belonged to different Malfoy family members. He hoped one of them would work for Harry at least until they could get to Olivanders. Draco was sure it would help Harry to feel less vulnerable. Carrying the boxes back he set them down on the coffee table next to the platter of sandwiches and crisps that awaited them. He turned around to check on Harry only to see him stretching on the couch and moving to sit up.
"Did you get your letter sent?" Harry asked. He reached up to rub his eyes and remove the rest of the sleep from them.
"Yes I did. I also received a letter from Gringotts. It seems Sirius Black left a will and it is to be read on Friday," Draco told him as gently as he could. He took Harry's hand in his and gave it a light squeeze. "The Goblins attempted to send you a notice, but the owls returned to them. They asked for any assistance in contacting you. I let them I would give you the message and that both of us would be there."
Harry refused to cry again even as the sense of loss that washed over him at the mention of Sirius and the remembrance of his death. "Thank you Draco. I do want to go." He gave the hand holding his a light squeeze back. Looking over he saw the food and was going to suggest they eat when he noticed the boxes. "What are those?" They reminded him of the box that his wand had come in but couldn't figure out why they were here.
"Those, my inquisitive friend, are two wands. One belonged to my great great great grandmother Corlinda and the other to her husband Lucian. I thought one of them might work for you," Draco said as he picked up the boxes and set them down on Harry's lap.
Harry was surprised by this. He looked at Draco, "Are you sure you want me to use one of these? I mean they have to mean something to you right?" He couldn't believe Draco would allow him to use these. That the other boy wasn't worried he'd damage them or anything. These were heirlooms and he was just handing them over to him.
"I am sure Harry. As long as one of them will work with you," Draco clarified. There were others in the safe, but he doubted they would work well with Harry since they'd belonged to those who were very dark in the family. These two were from those who were more light gray than dark and the one he suspected would be perfect for Harry.
Harry opened the one box and took out the wand. Nothing happened as he held it. He was afraid of giving it a swish in case something destructive happened. He set it back down for now and picked up the other box. He took off the lid, but before he could pick up the wand it snapped up into his hand. He lifted an eyebrow at that then turned to look at Draco. "I think this wand likes me."
"Grandpa Lucien said that someone would eventually use his wand again. You have to understand that he was a bit of a seer. From what I was told he told the family that one day someone would use it and that the person would be the changer of the future," Draco told him with a shrug. "Its birch wood, twelve inches and the core is a bit of thestral hoof wrapped in three strands of unicorn hair. From what I understand he was a hard one to fit for a wand."
"Death and rebirth," Harry said softly. They'd had to do a bit of research last year on woods and core materials used in wands. It had been fascinating to read. Harry remembered that birch wood was used for renewal, new beginnings and protection against evil. Then there was the core, the thestral symbolized death while the unicorn symbolized hope and birth, tied together like this Harry thought it meant anything was possible. "Thank you Draco. This feels wonderful in my hand. I'd test it out but I think Severus would have both our hides."
"That he would," Draco said with a chuckle. "Well now that you have a wand, once he gives you clearance, you can work magic. In the mean time let's eat shall we?" He handed Harry a plate and then the platter of sandwiches so he could pick one. "I thought perhaps after lunch you might want to owl your friends, at least let them know how you are doing if not where you are. I'm sure they would like to know."
Harry took a ham sandwich and set it onto a plate along with some crisps. He set the plate down on his lap and shook his head. "I don't have any friends."
"Yes you do. The other two parts of the golden trio," Draco told him. He may not like Weasley but he knew the red head was Harry's best friend and of course Granger he could learn to like given a chance. She at least was intelligent even if she had no understanding of true wizarding ways.
"No I don't, Draco," Harry said softly. "Not anymore."
"What are you talking about? You three have been thicker than a group of pixies and about as destructive," Draco told him with a grin still on his face. As he looked at Harry though he realized the other boy wasn't smiling. Something had to have happened. He just didn't know what, but he planned to find out. His smile faded and he grew serious. "What happened Harry?"
Harry had managed to take a bite of his sandwich, but now he wasn't really hungry as he thought about Ron and Hermione. "It seems they were never really my friends."
"What are you talking about?" Draco asked again not really eating at this point. He was too curious to but he was watching to see if Harry did.
"I overheard them last year; a couple of days before school let out," Harry said. He looked at his sandwich, but instead took a crisp to nibble on. He told Draco all about it as he remembered listening to his two best friends talk.
~~Flashback~~
Harry had headed up to his room tired and ready to just crawl into bed even though he knew he had packing that needed to be done. In two days they would be leaving Hogwarts, something he was not looking forward to, but at the same time he didn't want to stay here after Dumbledore's revelations. Hearing voices he stopped just outside of the room and listened for a moment not wanting to interrupt anyone. What he heard was more than he expected.
"Ron, I'm really tired of this. I never knew that being his friend meant I would be putting my life on the line every year. It's not worth it. I like Harry and all but the risks...Dumbledore never said things like this would happen," Hermione stated as she sat down on Ron's bed. She watched Ron pack up his bag and she shook her head. "Ron are you listening to me?"
"Of course I am Hermione," Ron stated. "But do you really think we can get any more money than we are? I know I'd like to have some more, it would come in handy especially over the summer, but somehow I doubt he'll see it that way. You know he'll state that we should have realized that we might be at risk."
"At risk? Isn't that putting it a bit mildly? Besides did you know back in first year what to expect? No of course not, neither of us did," Hermione said not giving him time to answer. "And every year it's gotten worse. First year was bad enough, but second year I was petrified! Third year we had to deal with those dementors all over and almost being eaten by a werewolf, fourth year, we were at the bottom of the blooming lake and what about this year? That blood quill and then flying to London on something we can't even see? Only to then fight death eaters? No it's getting too risky. I'm not sure it's worth it anymore."
"I don't want to keep risking my life either and for what? The money isn't bad, not that I can really spend it yet, but I'm known as his sidekick. No one notices what I do and I'm really tired of getting worse grades then him," Ron stated. "I'm ordered to do lousy in classes and even the OWLs. This could affect me getting work in the future. No matter what recommendations he promises who will hire me if I get lousy OWLs and NEWTs? I don't want to be like my father and stuck in some dead end job."
Harry stood there stunned, not really hearing the rest of the conversation. He felt sucker punched. It was bad enough that Dumbledore had lied to him throughout the years but this betrayal was worse. He slipped away making sure they didn't realize he'd been there.
~~END FLASHBACK~~
"Those bloody arseholes," Draco yelled. He couldn't believe that they thought and did that. He couldn't believe Dumbledore was paying them to spy on Harry that way and who knew what else he'd have them do or why, but that wasn't important right then, Harry was. He'd been hurt and those buggers would pay for this. He looked at Harry and could see the pain in his eyes no matter how much Harry tried to hide it.
"Yeah so now you know why I don't have any friends," Harry told him. He sighed and tried to eat his sandwich again. He knew he had to eat in order to get better and he refused to allow Hermione and Ron to ruin his life anymore. He could see how angry Draco was and he tried to give him a smile. "Draco, they aren't worth it. I've realized I don't need them in my life. They don't really care about me and never did. I should have realized it before. Hermione never visited me during the summer, but she did visit with Ron and yet I live in the muggle world the same as her. It would have been easy for us to arrange to meet or visit. Ron showed up to rescue me second year but I have to wonder who's idea it was to do it. The only time Ron ever visited was when the Weasley's took me to the World Cup and then it was only for a few minutes. I've had four weeks to really think about this and to realize how much they manipulated me. They would have me over to the Burrow, but they never seemed to care what was happening in my life."
"You deserve better than them Harry. You know my opinion on the Weasel and as for Granger, she may be book smart and get great grades, but in other ways she is very ignorant," Draco stated. "That whole thing she has...SPEW, stupid name for a very foolish idea. Freeing house-elves is not the answer. I agree they shouldn't be abused, but you can't just free them; they would die."
"What do you mean they would die?" Harry asked. He'd never heard that one. He had helped Hermione do some of the research on house-elves, although at the time it was to get her to stop nagging him, and he had never seen anything about them dying if freed.
"Their magic is symbiotic to ours," Draco explained. Seeing the confusion on Harry's face he continued to explain. "A house-elf's magic is dependent upon that of a wizard. When they join a family's household or a business their magic is supported by the family or owner; without it the house-elf cannot survive. Their bodies cannot contain their magic on their own. Without the bond in place their magic leaks out until there is none left, so you see they need us in order to live. From what I understand it wasn't always this way, but the house-elves were injured in a great war and afterwards if they were to survive they had to bind themselves to wizards; at least that is what the legends tell us. It all happened thousands of years ago; however it happened though, it's how things are between house-elves and wizards. So you see Harry if you free a house-elf, unless they find another family or business to bind with, their magic begins to fade and once the magic is gone their bodies just start to shut down."
"So if Hermione had been successful they'd all die. No wonder the house-elves are all scared of her and try to avoid her. Did you know that they stopped cleaning Gryffindor tower? The only one who would was Dobby," Harry stated with a shake of his head. "The thing is though Hermione isn't their master so she can't break the contract by giving them clothes. I tried to tell her that, but she still insisted on putting out little hats and socks for them."
"Stupid bint," Draco muttered. He'd once envied Granger's ability to know answers for class, but he'd soon realized that no matter how good she was at book work when it came to the practical end of things she struggled to put that knowledge to work. "I know no matter how I say this it is probably going to come out wrong, but that is the problem with the muggle born. They come into the wizarding world and they try to force their beliefs on us without knowing all the facts," he stated.
"Hermione did research the house-elves," Harry said in defense of her. "I helped, but I never found anything like that about them. How long will they live without binding themselves to another wizard?" he asked suddenly thinking of Dobby.
"Oh I am sure she found it, but she dismissed it since it did not go with her belief system," Draco stated with a roll of his eyes. "It would have been in the main book on house-elves in the library. As for how long about six months, perhaps a year depending on the house-elf, why?"
"I was thinking of Dobby," Harry stated. It had been several years since Dobby had been freed, but he was still alive so he must have bound with someone or something to have survived.
"All I know is you managed to get him free from Father which I was grateful for. Father treated him horribly," Draco told him. He'd missed Dobby around the house, but at least he'd been able to see him when he'd been at school until the curse had made him treat him horribly as well. He hoped when he went back this year he would be able to apologize to him.
"I'll ask him about it later," Harry said thinking he could talk with Dobby when he went back to school. He'd call him here now, but if Dobby was bound to Dumbledore he did not want to put Dobby into the position of having to punish himself.
"All right," Draco stated with a nod. He checked the time and then looked at Harry. "Well, finish your lunch Harry and then you can lay down for another kip. When you wake up Uncle Sev should be back and then you can test that wand out. You have to eat and rest though because you know he'll ask me if you rested."
"All right," Harry said with an exaggerated sigh. He managed to eat the whole sandwich and even a handful of crisps with it. "Happy?" He asked and saw Draco just shake his head and laugh.
"I will be when you lay down and sleep. Harry, do you need a pain potion?" Draco asked kicking himself for not asking earlier. He should have realized that Harry would be in pain still and shouldn't have to suffer through it.
Harry hadn't thought of having another potion. The pain was tolerable to his thinking, but he had to admit the potion did work wonders. "Actually one might be nice," Harry admitted.
"I'll be right back then. You try to get comfortable while I'm gone," Draco stated as he left the room and headed up to Severus' room where he knew there would be extra potion stored.
When Draco left the room Harry struggled to stand up. "Binky," He called and smiled as the house-elf appeared. "Will you show me where the loo is please?"
"Oh yes great Harry Potter sir. Binky would love to help the great Harry Potter," Binky told him as he began to lead the unsteady lad to where the loo was.
"Please just call me Harry," Harry said as he held onto the door of the loo. "Thank you Binky for all your help."
"The great Harry is thanking Binky. Oh," Binky said with tears of joy in his eyes. He then popped out to tell the other house-elves.
Draco came back to the study only to find it empty. He looked around trying to figure out where Harry went. Had Harry tried to leave because he didn't trust them? Or could one of his father's friends shown up to cause trouble? He walked back into the hall and spotted Harry coming out of the loo. "Oh good gracious," He said as he went to help him walk back to the room.
"Thanks. It didn't seem that far when I walked it the first time," Harry said as he leaned against Draco for support. He hadn't realized just how weak he was from all he'd been through.
"You should have asked me sooner I would have helped you," Draco admonished. "When I came back to the empty study I thought maybe you'd left or worse something had happened to you. Don't do that to me again."
"I'll try not to," Harry said as he settled back on the couch again. He covered up with the blanket as Draco handed him the pain potion. "Thank you for getting this." He drank it down making a face again. "I think he makes them taste awful on purpose."
"Actually so do I," Draco said settling into the one chair thinking he'd stand guard and just watch Harry sleep, but before long both boys were sound asleep.
This was the sight that Severus came back to when he entered the study. He looked at Harry curled up on the couch sleeping soundly and Draco sprawled in the one chair snoring away. Although tempted to color their hair orange he restrained himself. There would be better times for such pranks, but he still owed Draco for his robes that constantly changed colors in the sun. He debated on waking the sleeping teens; after all he had no idea how long they'd been asleep. He'd been gone several hours and it was now early afternoon. He cleared his throat and noted that Harry woke up instantly; that didn't surprise him considering the boy's family and history. Draco on the other hand just attempted to get more comfortable in the chair.
"Sir," Harry said as he sat up on the couch. He looked over at Draco and couldn't help busting out laughing. Somehow in his sleep, Draco had caused his hair to stand up into messy spikes. It looked hilarious to Harry.
Draco woke to the sound of laugher. Through sleepy eyes he looked at Harry glad to see him laughing even if he didn't know what had caused him to laugh. He noticed his godfather was back making him hurry to sit up straight. "Did you find the wards?"
"Yes among other things," Severus stated. He looked at Harry still laughing on the couch. "Draco would you please do something to your hair so that Harry may control himself?"
"What's wrong with my hair?" Draco said even as he stood up and rushed over to a mirror on the one wall. He let out a screech that made Harry laugh even harder. Draco muttered something about silly Gryffindors as he smoothed his hair back in place. He then went back to sit down. "Now Uncle Sev tell us what you found?"
Harry managed to get his laughter under control. He did want to hear this part and find out what Severus had learned about the blood wards. "Please sir, tell us what you found?"
"Very well," Severus said as he sat down. "You were right Harry; there were no blood wards anywhere on the property. The only wards I found had Dumbledore's signature upon them. They were designed to keep anyone with magic who had malicious intent for you out. Thankfully it does not matter if the intent is on the Dursleys." A small smile crept over his face as he remembered his time with Petunia. He'd despised her when they were children; she had been a nasty brat who had turned into a nasty shrew of a woman. He'd not been impressed by her or her whale of a husband. The son was absent, but he'd done enough damage to the place that he doubted the boy would receive any heirlooms from his parents. Of course he also made sure Vernon would end up unemployed. That happens when one can only speak the truth. "The wards however are not the only things I found. Stored in the far recesses of the attic were several trunks; they contained items that were salvaged from your parents’ home in Godrics Hollow. I brought them back with me and had them placed in your room."
"There were items that survived and they never told me?" Harry asked bitterly. He leaned back against the couch not sure what to think at this point. He was thrilled at having things that had belonged to his parents and yet very sad that he hadn't had them earlier in life.
"What did you do to the Dursleys?" Draco asked. He was keeping an eye on Harry who looked shell shocked at the moment. He knew that Harry'd had a lot happen over the last month. He just hoped this wasn't too much for him.
"Nothing you need to worry about," Severus told him. He paused as he saw Draco’s owl come in through the window and land on Draco's shoulder. He decided to let the letter from the owl distract the boys from asking any more questions.
"It's from my lawyer. He'll be here after dinner tonight," Draco said. He got up and wrote a short note stating that the time was fine. He then handed it to his owl to take out.
"Well then, how about we take young Harry here up to his room to look through those trunks and see what all is in them?" Severus suggested.
"And I get to test out this wand," Harry said hopefully.
"Sounds like you boys had a busy morning. You can tell me all about it while we explore the trunks," Severus said as he moved to pick up Harry. "And if you don't overdo then you may test the wand," He added and liked how he saw the boy grin.
