Minerva smiled as she stepped out of the room and closed the door, letting the two men talk. She walked slowly down the hall, looking around the rebuilt school, old memories lingered and she smiled, knowing that since they were opening their doors that new memories could begin. A soft song filled the corridor and she looked up to see Fawkes flying down, she smiled as she held out her arm and the graceful bird landed and chirped at her happily. She ran her fingers down his neck, “welcome back Fawkes, we have missed you dearly.” She smiled as he sang at her softly nudging her hand. “We have risen from the ashes…just as this school has always done, come, new minds are waiting to be filled with magical knowledge.” She smiled as she continued to walk to her office, her heart light as she took Fawkes’ return to Hogwarts as a sign that the school would rise and flourish like a Phoenix.
Chapter 4: Welcome to your new life
Severus sighed as he walked slowly down the stairs, taking in the newly rebuilt Hogwarts, while it still looked the same the whole place felt different. The magic in the building held that air of newness that made him glad for this second chance at life, even with the knot in the pit of his stomach that filled him with dread as he thought about how he couldn’t even enjoy this second chance. “Out of the cauldron and into the fire.” He muttered as he rounded the corner and saw Analessia pacing by the wall just before the doors to the great hall. Severus slowed as he took in the sight, it was filled with plaques and portraits who’s occupants moved and talked with each other. He recognized a few people in the portraits, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Tonks, and there was a large portrait in the middle of all of them that held the smiling face of Albus Dumbledore. He looked up at the wall, his eyes glancing over the portraits, bouncing from face to face, remembering times he spent with people both from school and in the Order. He stepped past Analessia and laid his fingers on the ornate golden frame around Albus Dumbledore. “I should have died with them…some of them died because of me.” He whispered.
Analessia stepped over to him and laid her hand on his arm, “from everything that I have been told about you and about the war, you did what you had to. Under the orders of Dumbledore, it was very brave of you.”
He laughed bitterly, “brave? Is that what they are calling me now? That is a long way from being a dirty Death Eater or a slimy git.”
Analessia sighed, “come, we have things we need to discuss…I also have someone you have to meet.” She tugged at his hand as she pulled him down the hallway and through a portrait. “These is my classroom, my rooms are just beyond here,” she muttered.
Severus found himself looking around at the genie bottle style room and when he looked up he saw that the ceiling was enchanted much like the ceiling in the Great Hall. It was a circular room done in blacks, highlighted with purples and blues, there were no chairs or furniture of any kind, pillows were littered around the room placed in small groups, surrounded by a single blinding white pillow that had crystal balls hovering over them, about six groups in all. The room was warm, soothing and inviting and smelled faintly of Jasmine and his mind instantly knew the reason why. “Jasmine, it’s used to induce trance like states and often used by Seer’s during a prophecy. You are more than a Divination teacher, you are a Seer is well.”
She nodded as she led him past the piles of pillows to a door that must have led to her privet rooms. “Come, he is waiting for us.”
His brow furrowed as he followed her, his question dying on his lips when he stepped into her rooms, that were decorated much in the same style as her classroom, enchanted ceiling and all, behind her to see a man standing by the fireplace. He felt himself caught off guard by the beauty of the man. He was around Severus’s height, his long black hair was swept back from his face in a high ponytail and fell to his waist, his eyes were the same color as Analessia’s leading him to believe that this man was related to her somehow. His eyes drifted over the wings that were protruding from his back and Severus was enthralled by the color. They were a deep sea foam green with highlights of blue and silver, the feathers seemed to shift like running water.
“You are correct in assuming I am related to Analessia.” The man suddenly spoke, his eyes pinning Severus.
Severus stiffened, “Occlumency?”
The man laughed, “no, something else. I am Elder Andrzej, Analessia’s grandfather.”
Severus blinked, “there is no way, you only look to be 27 at most, Analessia is a full grown woman, well over 21.”
His eyes flashed silver as he looked at Analessia, “you have not told him?” He sneered, “you have let him go this long without telling him anything? Prostesc copil.” He snapped making Analessia flinch.
“Forgive me, bunic, I had no idea that this would happen. I was only trying to settle my debt! You always told my brothers and I that we honor our debts and we settle them as well.”
“I also taught you to never get into a debt that you can’t get yourself out of reasonably. Stealing a scroll that was not meant for you put you in this situation, and you run back to the Clan when you are over your head.”
Analessia’s eyes flared, “stealing the scroll? That scroll is mine by birthright bunic and I am no longer a child! I am almost 300 years old! I wouldn’t have had to take the scroll if you had just given it to me like I asked.”
Andrzej snarled at her, his fangs bared at her. “Back down Analessia, I am still Elder of this family and will be spoken to as such. You will not whine to me like a child, yes you are nearly 300 years old but you are still a child to the Clan, you ran from your duties and you ran from your family.” His eyes snapped to Severus and he grabbed Analessia’s arm and pulled her away speaking in low angry Romanian to her.
Severus leaned against the wall and rubbed his temples as a headache began forming behind his eyes. He heard a resounding slap and looked up to see Analessia holding her cheek and Andrzej looking outraged. Severus stalked forward as the other man lifted his hand again and grabbed his wrist his other hand holding his wand, his onyx eyes steady and his mouth turned in a snarl. “Touch her again and I will lay a curse on you so bad that it will become Unforgivable number four.” He growled out, “she is family, you do not treat family like this.”
“You are outsider, you know nothing of our family or our ways. This is not your concern.”
“I am making it my concern, you…will…not…touch…her.” His grip tightened around the elder’s wrist with each word before he dropped his hand but not his wand and moving to pull Analessia slightly behind him. “If all you are going to do is try to abuse this woman then you can leave.”
Andrzej snarled, “fine, I will leave, enjoy your pain.” He snarled as he stormed out of the room.
Severus snorted as he turned and put a hand on Analessia’s shoulder, “are you alright?”
She nodded and sighed, “come, we have about two hours before the sun sets.” She waved her hand and a fire in the fireplace started up, warming the room and tea began making itself. “I had some supplies brought in…I was lucky I still have some friends and family who don’t hate me.” She motioned for him to sit as she moved to sit herself in front of the fire relaxing against the pillows, he arched an eyebrow at her causing her to roll her eyes and chuckle. “Oh don’t be such a spoilsport, I don’t like chairs. They are uncomfortable when all I want to do is stretch out and relax. And trust me we are going to need to relax when the sun finally sets.”
"Are all Strigoi this obscure or is it just you?" He asked as he shrugged off his robes.
She laughed outright as she relaxed into her pile of pillows and her cat, Nanshe, meowed loudly and walked over and rubbed against Severus's leg. Severus sighed as he dropped down onto the pile of pillows across from Analessia and stroked the cat absentmindedly. Nanshe curled herself up at his side and purred loudly as he petted her as he regarded the woman across from him. She smiled at him as she lounged, "I can see the question burning in your eyes Severus. You are, for lack of better terms, my Child, my Charge. There will never be any secrets between us Severus, we are linked by blood. The potion I made to wake you from your coma called for the blood of the elder line…meaning it needed blood from the original creature. Since I couldn’t very well as my grandfather I had to use my own, my blood is not so diluted that it wouldn’t have worked, which is also why I was able to make the potion successfully. The potion was also mixed with some unicorn blood which I know people say is cursed, but my blood counteracted the unicorn blood, giving you your youth back."
"Did you know, when you were making that potion, that it would change me?" He asked softly stroking Nanshe, and watching Analessia very carefully.
She shook her head. "No, I had no idea. If I had known…I would have found another way. Originally I had no idea; I never thought that just the little amount of my blood I used would change you."
"And how do you know that it changed me?" He challenged her lightly.
"Because I felt it Severus, also because you could see my wings, we have a very powerful concealment spell on us that only other Strigoi can see our wings. It is the only thing we can hide normally. Our claws and our fangs slide back into us when we are not using them, makes us easier to blend in, also easier to hunt once you learn to call them forward. When I saw you when I went back into that room for my bag I also felt it. We call it the Call.” She said with a shrug.
"The call?"
"You called out to me Severus, but it wasn't you, it was what I created inside of you. I could hear the blood bond. It reached out to me and begged me to teach and to guide. Tonight will be the beginning of your eternal life, and you aren't alone. We aren't like vampires who scare the new turns into hiding themselves away from the world. You can go on just as you are now, yes you have to hide as a Strigoi, but you can still teach, you can still register as a magical creature with the ministry should you wish, but there are no records of Strigoi seeing as most people believe we are just a myth or extinct. I will take you to go do that, if that is what you wish, and make the person doing the registry swear to a vow of silence. Remember, we are not vampires, we are not those…those monsters. They are disgusting warped twisted versions of Strigoi and they hate us for it. Vampires will try to kill you, if you are ever exposed to them and you are alone do not try to attack them, you must run."
"I have never run from anything in my life, why is getting away from Vampires so important?" He asked.
"Because Strigoi hold the secret to true Immortality, what the Vampires have is nothing compared to us. The powers they have is only a fraction of what we have." She smiled, "We can do things that Vampires can't even dream of doing. Tell me what do you know of Vampires themselves?"
Severus shrugged a shoulder. "That's easy; they can be shown by sight of what they are. Usually gaunt and pale, known to bite the neck of their victims to draw out the blood needed to survive, with an unusual aversion to garlic. Some people say that they can change into bats or wolves and can hypnotize their victims. But those have never been given any factual basis."
She smiled, "You are correct on all accounts, I don't know what happened or how it did but somehow the blood changed or mutated to create Vampires. Maybe a vampire is an offspring of a Strigoi and something else-"
Severus snorted a laugh, "A ghoul maybe."
She laughed as she poured some tea and handed him a cup. "Honestly that's the closest we have ever come to getting when trying to figure out the vampire origins. Anyway, no more about Vampires, let's talk about us and our people. They are your people now too Severus and you should be proud. We are part of a strong race of creatures, mortals feared us and our abilities, some worshiped us, our name became a phantom like creature that could possess and control mortals, leaving them to fear our name, barely speaking it above a whisper for fear of bringing us down on them." She set her cup down and lay back on the pillows looking up at the ceiling that mimicked the sky outside. One part of the sky was getting dark as the sun set and she closed her eyes against it. "Before we begin Severus, I am sorry. I never wanted to change anyone, and I regret that this is how we came to know each other."
Severus sighed. "Stop the ominous speech and just talk to me, trust me twenty some odd years of listening to Dumbledore, god rest his soul, has given me a life time and a half of ominous words and foreboding feelings. Anything you offer me can't possibly hurt more than getting the Dark Mark."
"I'm afraid it is…the turning…if you aren't born into it will be the most painful of your whole life. It will make anything Voldimort did to you feel like a pat on the head." She looked at him. "But I will be right here with you, through all of it. I won't leave this room until you are done with the turning and I will hold your hand if you want, it's not like you will crush it." She offered him a small smile.
He just shook his head. "If I hold your hand no one would let me live it down. Can we get into what I need to know? You keep looking at the ceiling as if waiting for the world to end."
She sighed as she sat up. "Alright, there's a lot of perks that you get from being a Strigoi. We are faster, stronger, and smarter than a human. From what people have told me you already have the smarter part down, Potions Master at 21? Impressive, even by Strigoi standards." She praised.
He flushed and coughed into his hand. "Well yes, potions was something I took to like a fish to water so to speak."
She nodded. "That's good, a sharp mind will keep you alive. You'll also be able to read other peoples thoughts, and you can pick out memories, whip them completely and turn people, mortals into your willing puppets to get into places that you normally couldn't. Hence why mortals were scared of us and why the legends of the Strigoi make us out to be nothing more than a phantom."
"Sounds like a mix between the Imperius Curse and Occlumency."
She blinked at him a few times before laughing. "Forgive me, I keep forgetting that you are already a wizard, it does make this easier. Many who have changed their Mates have had trouble getting them to accept who they are and even what they are turning into."
“Mates?" He asked raising an eyebrow at her.
"A lesion for another time Severus, it's not important right now." She said with a shake of her head. "Anyway, I will teach you how to do all of that in time. It takes a few years of practice to be able to accomplish it. It will be rare that another Strigoi and even vampires can take control of you, but from what I hear about you with your training in Occlumency makes you a near impossible person to control, I could only think of maybe my grandfather being able to control you but only because he is an Elder, one of three, but it is rare that he would agree to something like that unless you put all of us in danger.” Her eyes flicked up to the ceiling before looking back at him. "We don't have much more time, you are about to get into a lot of pain."
"What is this pain that you are talking about?" He snapped his patience at an end. "You keep speaking about pain but until you have been under the Cruciatus Curse then you have no idea what pain is."
She sighed. "Your mortality is going to burn away, your body is going to change, you will be put at the top peak condition your body is supposed to be in. Your bones will harden, your muscle mass will increase, and you will heal quickly, or as quickly as possible when it comes to how much your blood intake is." She held up her hand as his moth opened. "Seriously Sev, just shut up for a minute and stop side tracking me. I am trying to do as you ask and get this out quickly. I have blood stocked up, a couple House Elves stole it from a muggle blood bank, I needed a supply quickly and I erased their memories so that they won't get into trouble. But it was either get the blood and quickly or watch you starve to death before the turning is complete. I didn't have any other time to prepare so at first I will have to hold you down and pour blood down your throat until your teeth come in. Depending on how often you are in sunlight, you get hurt, or some such thing along those lines will decide just how much blood you need. You will probably be unconscious most of the turning but again I will be right here with you, taking care of you."
Severus sighed. "Anything else?"
Her gaze flicked up to the ceiling and back to him, her eyes flashing silver. "Yeah, get ready to hurt." She turned her face away as his screams began to echo in the room and she moved around getting her things ready to help him.
Hours passed and night bleed into day and then back into night again. Analessia sat next to a sleeping Severus, her own head throbbing as she downed another anti-headache potion. She glanced up to see the moon high in the night sky and breathed a sigh of relief. "56 hours in and the turning is almost done." She looked around the chaos of the room and sighed. Empty blood bags were strewn around the room, most from Severus a few from herself, blankets and pillows were torn up and tossed around from his thrashing and there were towels that held both blood and other things on them. She heard a grunt and looked down to see Severus stirring and his eyes opening. She smiled at him. "Welcome to your new life."
Severus groaned as he lifted a hand to his head. "Bloody fucking hell, that was defiantly painful."
"I told you so." She grinned holding out a potion to him. "Don't worry; it was brought from Madam Pomfrey. I don't think I will be brewing anything any time soon."
Severus downed the potion gratefully and sighed as he felt the throbbing in his head fade slightly. "So it's done? It’s over?"
She nodded. "The worst is over, now comes the day to day things such as feeding and the rules. Generally you would be told all of this but seeing as you didn't have a choice in the matter…well now let's get down to the basics." She sighed. "We still have reflections and can still die, but it is a lot harder to kill us. We can die by our hearts stopping or getting our heads chopped off. Oh and fire…fire is something that we can be susceptible to, it's not like we can spontaneously combust or anything or get lit on fire by sunlight. You're Strigoi now, your blood has something in it, we don't know what, but it keeps you in peak condition. It fights off age, disease, and any sort of damage, but in return you must keep yourself on blood. You can still eat normal food, we actually encourage it because it helps keep the blood flowing and gives you energy, but after a couple hundred years of that you might get bored with it."
"How much blood do you take in a day?" He croaked his throat raw from the screaming.
She handed him a cup of tea. "Drink this, you should be alright on blood for now, while you were out the last couple of hours I slapped a few bags on your teeth to keep you fed for a little while, you will still need to probably double up on your blood intake, so instead of say the normal, which is five or six bags, you will need anywhere between nine or ten. My average is about four, but that's because I don't do a lot of activity involving me being outdoors, so I'm not really out in sunlight." She looked into her own tea. "I think that covers everything, anything else can just be taken day by day. We have a lot of time, and taking things day by day will make everything easier. You've had enough life changing experiences for one day."
Severus leaned back on the pillows again and watched as her room slowly began to right itself, he felt drained and tired, but more alive than he had ever felt in his whole life. He looked over at her and offered another smile. "I never got the chance to say thank you Analessia, you saved my life, even if you accidentally gave me a new one. I can never repay you for giving me a new life. Being under Voldemort was the hardest and most painful thing in my life, now I feel like…I don't know, I feel free? I also feel a little like a new born colt, shaky on my own legs." He confessed.
She nodded, "it makes sense, I mean you lived for so long being all cloak and dagger serving the most evil man of our time and also trying to save a young man who was meant to bring him down. Now it's all over, the evil is gone, a thing of the past and the young man who brought him down has moved on. And Harry's sons are the cutest damned brats I have ever seen." She laughed.
Severus gazed at her as something in his head roared in raged possessiveness at Harry being with someone other than him. "Potter has children?"
"Yes, from what I know he and Ginny had two children, two boys, one right after the war? No a little while after then, but not long after. Then right after that boy and before he came here Ginny said she was pregnant again, the eldest is three and the second boy is two. I’ve seen pictures as well as held the boys when Ginny brought them here to dump them on him for his weekend with them so she could go run off with her new husband, she is a nasty piece of work by the way, really bitter and angry that Harry left."
“He left Miss Weasley?”
Analessia nodded, “yes, said he kept dreaming of another, one he lost in the war. He tried with Ginny and he enjoyed her company but couldn’t see her as more than a friend and he felt he was denying who he was. He told me he only stayed with her because he had agreed to try to make something work with her, for the sake of what they had before. But it never felt right to him. His children are beautiful though, both look like him but only little Albus has his beautiful green eyes.” She tilted her head to the side and looked at him curiously, “you care for him.”
"What? No! He was my student and an annoyance like his father."
"You can't lie to me Sev, I can see it on your face. You have this little tell with your eyes and eyebrows when something annoys you. Your mouth relaxed ever so slightly when I mentioned his green eyes. There is something about Harry that you can't get over, and I think it is more than the fact that he is Lily's child."
"How do you know about Lily?" He asked sharply.
"Your mind Severus, I could read it off of you. I know about Lily and I know that you cared for her. You can't keep things from me, but I promise I won't every willingly read or invade your mind, your thoughts are your own. While you were changing images of Lily and what happened ran through your head. You projected them in your pain and I saw and heard everything. What James and the others did to you, the relationship between you and Lily, your friendship, the true reason why you were so hard on Harry. Not because you hated him, but because you wanted him to be tough and ready to make whatever decisions he had to when the time came."
Severus felt his heart clench and the tears gathered in his eyes as he lowered his head and nodded. "Yes…yes to everything."
Analessia moved closer and pulled him into her arms running her hand through his hair. "It's alright Severus, This is your new beginning, you can move on from here." She held him close as she let him get everything out of his system. After a while she lifted his head and stroked away the bloody tears on his face. "Feeling better?"
He chuckled as he nodded. "Surprisingly yes, I think twenty some odd years of holding all of that in finally broke the dam." He looked into her eyes and noticed that they looked more silver than blue this time. "Why do your eyes always look so silvery?"
"It's all Strigoi eyes, only when your eyes are light colors such as green or blue they have a silver hue to them, darker eyes have a more bronze look to them." She summoned up a mirror and turned him around to look at himself. "Take a look at the new you, Severus Tobias Snape."
Severus looked into the mirror and felt his jaw drop. He lifted a hand to his face, his eyes wide. His hair still hung to his shoulders but had a luster like freshly polished onyx and looked thicker and fuller; his dark eyes had a slight bronze hue to them giving them more depth and mystery. His pale skin no longer looked like limp parchment, but now looked like fine snow and his complexion was perfect. His eyes drifted to where his own wings now sat, they were a deep beautiful shining black that reminded him of fine polished marble. "I don't think my skin has ever looked this good."
Analessia rested her chin on his shoulder, their faces resting next to each other as she looked at him in the mirror. "Probably when you were an infant. Even now, working on potions your skin and hair will no longer suffer. You might have to consume more blood considering some potions do cause affects to the ones brewing them, but you will never suffer making them as you once did."
He chuckled. "Guess there will be no reason to call me the greasy bat of the dungeons anymore."
She laughed and pulled back. "Well I think we've had enough self-discovery for one night, how about we go and get something to eat and talk more later, I don't know about you but I am starving." She stood up and brushed her clothing out and held out her hand to him. "And before we retire for the night, we can go for a run in the Forbidden Forest so you can get used to your strength and speed."
Severus grinned and grabbed her hand letting her pull him to his feet. “I’m curious, out of the three Strigoi I have seen, all of our wings are a different color…why is that? I mean your wings are silver, with what looks like a kaleidoscope of other colors and your grandfather’s wings looked like water, but mine are solid black.”
“Our wings are a physical manifestation of our inner selves, or what you folks call your magical core. We call it our spirit, but it all means the same thing.”
His face darkened slightly, “guess mine just show that my soul is as black as my heart.”
She rolled her eyes, “actually by our standards having one solid color is an honor, it means you know your heart and are comfortable with your soul and your mind that you have a single color to represent you. The silver of my wings means I am balanced and sure of myself and my life’s path, my wings also have a reflection of other colors depending on my mood during that day. The black of your wings symbolizes that you are a man who is serious and committed to his cause also someone who is filled with potential and mysterious. Just because something looks darker does not mean that it is evil vile or disgusting. You should know that Mr. Hero.” She smiled and nudged his shoulder.
He shook his head but smiled, “you are crazy Analessia.”
She laughed, “you aren’t the first person to tell me that, now let’s go get some food, I am starving. After dinner we can put those wings to use.”
Severus laughed as he followed her out of her rooms, for the first time in his life he felt free and he knew that he was starting a life that finally belonged only to him. His heart tugged as his thoughts drifted back to Harry, and he began to wonder if, that with this new life, he could finally have what he always dreamed about.
