September first:
Hermione and Severus woke early as usual, made sure all their school necessities were packed, and made their way to King's Cross to board the train. They crossed the barrier onto platform 9¾ at exactly ten-forty a.m., and Hermione's heart skipped a strange beat as she looked around, noticing none others than James Potter, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin standing around a girl with firey red hair.
At first, Hermione's mind screamed "Ginny" at her, but she knew better. It was Lily Evans, being swooned over by her fellow Gryffindors. She seemed to have caught James' eye, as he looked up and nodded at her, but quickly averted his eyes, seeing who she was with.
"Looks like Snivellus has got himself a girlfriend." James nudged at Sirius, making no effort to be the slighest bit quiet as she pulled Severus past the group. Hermione saw out of the corner of her eye, as Lily turned her attention on the couple, gaining a most peculiar look in her eyes. "Just... leave him be, James." she said, still following the two of them with her gaze.
"Man, she is hot! What's a girl like that doing with Snivelly, anyway?" they heard Sirius pipe up.
"Let's just ignore them, Severus. For now." Hermione grinned mischievously as she pulled him into a private compartment, and drew the blinds. "Ah, drawing the blinds, I see. Do you plan to Christian this compartment with me?" Severus teased her as he took a seat. Hermione chuckled as she took a seat right beside him. "Severus, you have only kissed me one time. What makes you think I'd believe you would do such a thing?" she smirked at him.
Severus sighed, rolling his eyes. "I just... don't feel like I would be any good at it. Isn't the whole act of intimacy supposed to be about reaching a significantly heightened point of pleasure?" Hermione groaned, as just his words were capable of putting her in a state that would do her no good to be in at the given time. Severus turned to stare at her; a look of amusement written on his face as he surveyed her with her eyes, suddenly slammed and seemingly glued shut.
"Or is it about... uttering the naughtiest words that come to mind whilst... engaged... with your partner?" he was smirking at her when she slowly opened her eyes, trying his best not to crack under the amusement he was getting at her expense. "I'm glad you find this funny, Severus. At least you're getting a good laugh." Hermione smiled, laying her head on his shoulder.
"Okay,-" Hermione suddenly snapped her attention to her beaded bag, hastily zipping it open to withdraw a piece of parchment, a quill and some ink. Severus stared at her, watching her closely as she also withdrew a large book, for a sturdy writing surface. "I've calculated it in my mind. At this time, in 1977, Voldemort has only five Horcruxes.-" she began to write them down.
"Tom Riddle's Diary - 1943,
The Peverell's Ring - Also 1943,
Helga Hufflepuff's Cup - 1945, or 1946,
Slytherin's Locket - Also 1945, or 1946,
Finally, Ravenclaw's Diadem. - 1956..." Hermione said aloud as she wrote.
"And... You know where all of these are?" Severus asked slowly, scanning over her list with curious eyes.
"Yes. Well, no... They could be in entirely different places at this time. Voldemort does not make another Horcrux until he accidentally creates Harry on the night of October thirty-first, 1981. Which means... We'll have until October thirtieth, 1981 to locate and destroy him." Hermione sighed. "But, the hard part of it is going to be -"
She was cut short as a knock came down upon the compartment door. Severus and Hermione looked at one another for a moment before she stood to open the door, only after concealing the parchment inside of the book. Severus looked up, and found himself quite shocked and surprised to see Lily standing there, but he didn't say a word. Merely turned his attention to the passing scenery outside of the window.
"Hello there. I'm Hermione Gaines." she said, opting to get used to the name she had Albus write on the roster as she extended her hand to Lily, who took it to graciously give it a shake. Severus looked back at the mention of Hermione's 'last name.'
"Gaines?" he thought to himself.
"I'm Lily. Lily Evans." the red-head smiled at Hermione. "I just figured I would introduce myself just in case you wound up in Gryffindor. I'm a Prefect, so it's my duty to inform you of House rules and such."
Hermione nodded. "Ah yes... Well, much appreciated, Lily. But, Severus and I have some studying to do so... If I do by some chance end up in Gryffindor, I do hope you and I will get another chance to chat."
"Okay then." Lily nodded, a bit oddly as she looked past Hermione to Severus who was now, again, staring out of the window. "Have a good year, Severus..." she bade, almost sadly as she turned to exit the compartment.
"So you were saying?" Severus asked, not missing a beat as soon as the door was closed and locked. Hermione pointed lazily over her shoulder. "You don't want to talk about that?" she asked.
Severus sighed, "What is there to talk about, Hermione? She's only doing this because she's suddenly jealous of 'Snivellus, the 'grease-ball-wonder' and his highly attractive girlfriend.'"
"Well, if that is the case... How does it make you feel?" Hermione asked, re-taking her seat beside him.
"Hmm... Something actually tells me I'm quite over it. Now, you were saying?" Severus pressed again. Hermione's heart flipped with joy, but she stuffed it down. "I was saying... The hard part is going to be locating him, along with, ( quite possibly,) the cup, the ring, and the diary. Something tells me Lucius Malfoy already has it."
"I knew Lucius. He was in year six when I was a first year." Severus mused, thoughtfully.
"Well... First thing's first. You're very skilled in Potions, yes? Who am I kidding, of course you are. You have a little assignment, if you don't mind." Hermione paused, waiting for his reply. When he nodded, urging her on, she continued. "I ask you, Severus, to research a concoction that can counterract "Drink of Despair." Only with a proper antidote, will we be able to get to Slytherin's Locket. We don't want any of us weakened. Ravenclaw's diadem is in the Room of Requirement,-"
"The, - what?" Severus inquired sharply, raising a single brow.
"I'll explain in a moment,-" Hermione closed her eyes as she thought, "Diary, Lucius Malfoy... Cup should stil be in LeStrange's Vault, locket is still real... 1979 is when Regulus Black steals the real horcrux."
Severus stared blankly at her, watching and listening to her mutter all this, mostly to herself. "Shouldn't we wait to tell Dumbledore all of this?" he asked.
"He already knows... I owled him a few weeks back, and had a face to face meeting with him." Hermione said. "I had to explain to him who I was, you see."
Severus nodded. "So why the lie to Lily? Gaines?"
"Oh, I had Headmaster Dumbledore write down a fake name on the roster. I can't very well go by the name of Granger. Her son, Harry, will have a young friend named Hermione Granger in the future. I'm just doing it for safe measure, is all. So,-" Hermione shrugged, "I suppose my name this year will be Hermione Gaines."
"You would make a fine Slytherin." Severus smirked at her. "So very sneaky, you are."
"Yes, well... I'm not sure if I'll succeed in Gryffindor without hexing Sirius Black, first. That, or James... Or, Peter." Hermione shuddered.
"In that case..." Severus laughed. "Perhaps you should allow yourself to be sorted into Gryffindor."
"I suppose we'll just see what the hat says." Hermione smiled.
The rest of the ride was spent in a comfortable silence as the two of them indulged in their books. Severus laid across the seat with his legs over Hermione's lap. A comfortable position for them both. He stole glances at her over the top of his book. She was beautiful. It still seemed unreal to him that she desired his company, but he absolutely loved the way she cared so passionately for him. It was an amazing feeling. To make the feeling even more immense, he took comfort in knowing, she wasn't going anywhere.
"We'll be arriving soon." he told her, closing his book as he removed his lower half from her lap. The two of them changed into their robes in silence as the momentum of the train began to slow to a stop. Hermione flashed Severus an excited smile as she grabbed her beaded bag. She made to exit the compartment, but she paused, feeling a warm hand wrap gently around her wrist. Turning back, she came face to face with Severus. He was staring at her in a way she wasn't sure what to think of. It was a look of adoration; his dark eyes glinting in the dim lights.
Hermione's breath caught as he gently placed his hands on either side of her face. She closed her eyes as he softly pressed his lips against hers. The kiss was brief, but so passionate it took her breath away. Slowly, he drew away from her, replacing the hand on her cheek in her hand. With their fingers laced together, they left the compartment to join the crowd of students making their way off the train, and onto the platform.
------
As they entered the Great Hall, Severus grudgingly let go of her hand and went to join his house mates at the Slytherin table. He watched closely as Hermione went to go stand awkwardly with the group of first years who were surveying her as if she was some sort of alien life-form.
A younger Professor McGonagall strode into the Great Hall, holding what Hermione knew to be the sorting hat. This was it. Moment of truth. Though, she was fairly certain she was going to end up in Gryffindor either way. Even though, she knew she wouldn't mind being in Slytherin with Severus, either.
'Or, perhaps something more neutral,' Hermione thought to herself as McGonagall proceeded to call upon the first students. 'Something like Ravenclaw, maybe?'
Before she knew it, her 'name' was being called: "Hermione Gaines."
Hermione remained collected as she stepped up, taking a seat on the freakishly small stool. The hat sprang to attention as soon as it was placed atop her curls.
"Hermione Gaines, eh?" the hat whispered to her, so only she could hear. "That isn't your real name. Is it, Miss Granger?" the hat chuckled. "I could only imagine why one would need to use an alias name. Though, being me... You don't have to imagine much. I can see into your mind. It is apparent, you have your own agenda; a reason for being here. So far away from your time..."
Hermione clenched her eyes shut, hoping the hat didn't begin shouting obscenities about her. Yet, it went on, slowly and quietly. "Something in your heart has changed. Something of an immense hurt, laced with good intentions. It is going to take a lot of sneaking around, and manipulating situations to your advantage, Miss Granger."
"Anything but Gryffindor. Anything but Gryffindor." Hermione chanted in her mind.
"Anything but Gryffindor, eh? You've become privy to my weakness for choice, have you?" The hat chuckled again. "Well, then... Though your wits are very Ravenclaw-like... It is clear, where your loyalties are. Who am I to deny a keen sense of love? Have a great year, Miss Granger. Slytherin!" the hat hollared out, causing an uproar of approval from the afformentioned house's table.
Hermione never thought she would be so glad to be in Slytherin, but the hat had a point. She was prepared to sneak around, doing what she must to succeed in her endeavor. And she would do anything. It had even taken her powerful love for another into consideration.
"Clever." Severus commented with a small smile upturning his lips as she sat beside him. "How ever did you manage that?"
"I didn't. All I said was "Anything but Gryffindor."" she grinned happily as Severus grasped her hand once more, beneath the table.
