Chapter Five
Eliot made a phone call. He so rarely did that, as more times than not he knew the players in the game. He’d been dealing with terrorists and all around bad guys since, well, since he was seventeen and he had never heard of Hermione Jean Granger. He knew that there were those out there so deep that no one knew their occupation within any of the governments of the world. But there was always speculation, rumor, and, sometimes if you were very lucky, someone actually knew the truth.
So he called the one man he thought would have facts. Eliot just hoped the Colonel wouldn’t be an asshole about it.
“What?” came the terse reply when the man answered his phone.
“Vance.”
There was a pause followed quickly by, “Do you have any fucking clue what time it is here, Spencer?”
“None, seeing as I don’t know where you are,” he replied just as sourly.
“Well, it’s fucking late. So let’s make this quick. What do you want?”
“I need to know if you heard of someone,” he said.
“Name?”
“Hermione Jean Granger.”
There was some noise on the other end and he heard a door shutting hard. “How did you get that name?”
“I’ve run across her lately and I need to know what’s her deal.”
“Shit,” he muttered, followed by the scraping of a chair and him sitting down hard. “Why don’t you ask something easy, like anything involving science or shit like that?” He took a deep breath and said, “I know about as much about that woman as most others, meaning next to fucking nothing. What is known is a lot of speculation.”
“If that’s all you know…”
“Just stop it! I didn’t say I knew nothing!” He took a deep breath. “Just what I know sounds crazy and straight out of a comic book is all.”
“Oh, is that all,” he mocked. “What do you have? I don’t care what it is. Tell me.”
“You remember all those unexplained terrorist attacks in the U.K. back in the 1990’s?”
“Yeah, there weren’t many of us who weren’t asking about them. We were wondering if we were going to be called in.”
“Yeah, turns out that there was this secret war going on,” he told him. “And you’ll never believe in a million years between who.” He got up and grabbed a bottle of booze and a glass. “I’m way too sober to be telling you this shit,” he grumbled as he poured himself three fingers of the rot gut. “Witches and wizards.”
“What? You’re shitting me!”
“I wish I were.”
He sat back. “They’re real?”
“Yeah, they’re real. So was their war,” Vance told him. “And your Miss Hermione Jean Granger was into it up past her eyebrows.” He took a sip of his drink. “Now get this, according to everyone’s calculations at the time all this shit started going down, she was a kid.”
“We all started young…”
“No, you don’t get it. I mean she was really just a kid! She had to have been like fourteen or fifteen when all this shit started up.” He took another sip. “Or younger.”
“Fuck,” he muttered, running his hand through his hair.
“She was the brain of her group. They were called the ‘Golden Trio’. Have you heard of Harry Potter yet?”
“No.”
“If she’s there, he’s there. It’s a given.”
Then Eliot remembered the man in the booth, she had called him Harry. So yeah, he was there all right. “Are they involved with each other?”
“What the fuck do you think I am? Their priest?”
He snorted. “Right. Rumors?”
“That they’re a lot of things, but one of them isn’t involved. He’s got a sweetheart back home is the word.”
“And the word about her?”
“Now that I know more about. She went through a rather public breakup and, if you’re lucky, you’ll still be able to find it on YouTube.”
“Under?”
“Man gets his ass handed to him at pub by girlfriend in front of his mistress.”
“Ouch.”
“You don’t know the half of it. Watch the video.” He paused and said, “The woman has some excellent skills.”
“Don’t I know it. She made a diving tackle off the hood of my moving car to take down a guy.”
Vance whistled. “Damn, I wish I could have seen it.”
“Sweet move.”
“I bet.”
“Who was the third party in this ‘Golden Trio’ you mentioned?”
“Ron Weasley. He got out of it soon after she handed him his walking papers.”
“So he was the one she was dating?”
“Yeah, and I have to say I don’t see what she saw in him in the first place.” He took another sip and hissed out, “Women.”
“So do you know why she’d be in Boston?”
“Not really,” he sighed. “Heard that they’re on the hunt for the last of the terrorist group and that it was only a matter of time before they had him either in a box or a shallow unmarked grave.”
“They’re not going for a straight capture?”
“They’re going after a man by the name of Antonin Dolohov. And from all the reports I’ve seen on the man, he’s evil. I do not say that lightly.” He took another drink. “You have skills, Eliot. I know, as I trained you up right. You’ve learned more since then. Even so, I’m telling you to stay clear of this shit she’s involved in. It’s the kind of crap demons and devils have nightmares about.”
“That bad?”
“Really?” He finished his drink. “He’s worse.” And he hung up on him.

Hermione woke so abruptly that she didn’t know if it had been a nightmare or something else that had awoken her. It wasn’t until she was going into her living room that she knew what it had been. Eliot was reclining in her overstuffed chair of her sitting room waiting for her.
“Do you break into many women’s flats or am I just lucky?” she inquired. This had the man smiling.
“I heard some things,” he told her.
She blinked at him owlishly. “All good, I hope.”
“I even saw a video of you beating the shit out of a tall redhead in front of a screaming blond.” He stood up. “I was a bit surprised you didn’t go after her too just for her using baby talk even in hysterics.”
“Who says I didn’t?” When he arched his eyebrows, she went on with, “There’s only so many times a person can take hearing Lavender, yes that’s her name, call Ronald ‘Won-Won’.” He snorted with derisive humor. “Coffee? Water? Tea?”
“No thanks.” He followed her to the kitchen and watched as she pulled a bottle of water out and poured it into a glass. “I heard that you were a witch. Even heard magic was real.”
She put the water bottle back away, as she asked him, “And what do you want me to say in regards to that?”
“Is it?”
“Is it what?” She sipped on her water as she leaned against her kitchen island. “By telling you such, I’d be in violation of several secrecy mandates I know of, not to mention just being an all around bad idea.” She looked over to him watching her. “But at the same time aren’t I confirming what you just asked me by saying such? Hmm, it makes one think.”
“You are a tricky woman, darlin’,” he said with a slow warm grin.
This had her giving him a small smile. “So I’ve been told.”
