Chapter 4
Walking along between Sirius and Severus after grabbing some munchies from the small corner shopette, Harry looked down at the rabbit he was holding and said, snickering as he watched Bugs happily munching on a raisin, “I think you're becoming a raisin addicted rabbit, Bugs. You almost mugged Miss Cissy for the box she had in her pocket yesterday.”
Snorting at that, smirking, Severus patted Harry's back, then said, “He did, didn't he? However, as you're not giving him too many, he's fine. They aren't something horribly bad for him and are natural, so having them as a treat is alright.”“That was funny though, you gotta admit it,” Harry chuckled. “He almost climbed her to get to the box.”“He did,” Sirius laughed, slipping an arm around Harry's waist.Still chuckling, Harry held Bugs close and petted him while he ate, glancing down at the rabbit while making sure he didn't trip over something on the sidewalk.Hand on the young man's shoulder, Severus said, quietly, “You like Bugs.”“Yeah, I'll admit to that,” Harry nodded, looking at his dad. “He's good with me. I mean—he's not at all aggressive and just likes to be held. That and eat. Nothing more than that. He even climbs up in bed and sleeps with us. He chews on his toys and stuff we put in his cage meant for him to chew on, but he doesn't bother other things. All he seems to want to do is be around me. Even when he does the whole jail break thing. He just seems to do that to find me.”“Which is fine,” Severus told him with a nod. “He's good with all of us, actually. So far, there haven't been any problems with him at all. He doesn't chew, as you said, uses the litter box in your room, all of it.” Reaching out, he petted the rabbit then added, quietly, “He's quite soothing to be around as well. All of us have noticed that I think.”“He was a good choice,” Sirius told him, patting his lower back. Snickering, he grinned then added, “I think even Snape will agree that we were relieved you didn't get the bloody ferret.”“I will,” Severus confirmed with a firm nod of his head. “Bugs is a good choice for you.”Nodding, Harry changed topics, asking, “So, what are we going to do tonight?” Normally, he and Sirius went out most nights to do something or other, even if it was just to go get a bite to eat. Since this whole mess started with his parents having reappeared, they'd been staying in. Even Sirius said, unless they all went out together, it was better this way. The following night they would be going to the Freddie for a Day contest, of course, but they were finding things to do while staying in instead. He didn't mind that, really, as they were having fun with it. It was just strange was all since his dads and Sirius, all three, encouraged him to get out and be around people to help with some of his problems.“Remus and I thought we'd order pizza for supper then play some games, like cards or whatnot. That and just talk as we do. That's always most enjoyable and all of us seem to have fun,” Severus said, looking at him.“I like that idea,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “And we do! It's fun just to play a game and shoot the shite.”“Yeah, it is,” Sirius agreed, leaning against his godson.Tuning out what was said as Severus was discussing where to get the pizza, Harry stopped and looked around, brow furrowed. Something was setting off some kind of signal for him, one he didn't like. Clutching Bugs tighter, he shook his head, trying to pinpoint where the feeling was coming from. As he knew to trust this instinct, because it was something that had saved him before, he didn't like this. Not at all. After a few steps, Sirius realized Harry had lagged behind. Stopping and looking at the young man, seeing the expression on his face, he grabbed Snape's sleeve and tugged, stopping the man. “Harry? What's wrong?” He asked, looking around to see if there was a problem.“I don't know,” Harry said, shaking his head, still scanning around. “Something's setting off warnings of some kind here. I don't know what though. Just—let's get inside. I don't want to be out here anymore.” Quickly, he caught up to the two, still looking around.“It's not far off,” Severus assured him, putting a hand on his shoulder. Scanning around himself, hand on his wand, he hurried them along, wondering what was going on.“Yeah, we'll be there in a minute,” Sirius said, not liking this. Making sure he had his hand on his wand, he kept an eye out. Changing topics, hoping to keep Harry at ease, he said, “Cissy said our costumes are done. She's going to have to make sure they fit right tomorrow night, of course, and do the things like makeup for you, but we're good to go.”“Brilliant,” Harry said with a wide grin, though he was uneasy about what he was feeling and still glancing around. “I think we have a shot at winning something here.”
“Yeah, so do I,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “Especially Lucius in that strange outfit. I don't see too many trying something like that.”“Remus and I are actually pondering joining the three of you. Not in costume of course, but just to watch,” Severus said. What he was leaving out, though he was dead sure that the young man knew, it was more to help keep an eye on them in the busy club than to have fun.“That should be a riot,” Sirius laughed, shaking his head.Feeling the hair go up on the back of his neck, Harry hugged Bugs tighter and turned around. Eyes widening when he saw a redheaded woman with green eyes standing there, smiling at him, he shook his head then began to back towards the house. There was something familiar about her, but he wasn't sure what it was. Either way, he didn't want to be around her. Redheaded women—yeah, they weren't his favorites to start with. He knew that most didn't act like that cunt and her sister, the ones from his past, but he was always wary of them and didn't want anything to do with any of them. That was a big strike there in his books.“You look just like your dad, Harry,” Lily said softly, smiling at her son, stepping closer. “And you are so handsome. I bet the girls adore you.”“Who the hell are you?” Harry asked, backing up further.“Your mom,” Lily told him gently.“Oh, screw that,” Harry snarled, shaking his head. Now he didn't know what to do, but kept backing up.Hearing Lily's voice, Severus whipped around and sneered at her, looking thunderous. Leveling his wand at his old friend, he snarled, “Get out of here, Lily. You're not welcome around us!” Glancing at Black, who had Harry shoved behind him and was holding him there with one arm, his own wand leveled on his old friend, he snapped, “Black, get him inside and send Remus out. Then start what we had planned.”Nodding, keeping an eye on Lily, eyes flitting to James as he seemed to slide up by her from out of nowhere, he said, quietly, “We're getting to the house, Harry. Nothing to worry about.” Nudging the young man to get him to move faster, he kept an eye out as he backed them towards the entrance of Grimmauld Place.Watching Sirius usher Harry through the wards, making it to where she couldn't see them anymore, she looked at Severus sadly and said, quietly, “We won't hurt him, Severus, you know that. We just wanted to see him.”Wand trained on her and James, both, Severus sneered, “I would call dumping him on a doorstep where anyone could pick him up so the two of you could run off hurting him, Lily.” Snapping, he said, “Stay away from him and us, both. You're not welcome around here.”“Look, it's not that easy, Snape,” James sighed, trying to be polite to his old nemesis. “We get there are problems here. All we want is to try to get to know Harry.”“He wants nothing to do with you, either of you,” Severus shouted at them, looking irate. “Other than to beat the hell out of both of you for the nightmare he had to live through. I would strongly suggest that both of you leave, now!”“Sev, you know me. You know I wouldn't intentionally hurt my son,” Lily told him softly, wringing her hands.“Intentional or not, you did,” Severus told her, looking murderous. “And he's not your son anymore. Get used to that fact. You have your children, three of them, when you couldn't be bothered to check on your first or protect him. That's the only children you have. Harry isn't your son anymore and wants nothing to do with you.”Sighing, Lily looked at James then began to try to deal with the obviously upset Severus.
Getting Harry into the house and slamming the door, Sirius began to bellow for Remus, holding the trembling Harry close. Wand trained on the door, though he knew no one aside from those he let through the wards could get in, he was breathing heavily.
Hearing Sirius yell, Remus rushed out, still holding the paper he was reading. Seeing the look on both Sirius and Harry's face, he asked, eyes widening, “What's going on?”“James and Lily just showed up,” Sirius snarled, panting. Jerking his head to the door, he said, “You need to get out there to make damned sure Snape doesn't hex them within an inch of their lives. I'll start the ball rolling in here.”Dropping the paper he was holding, Remus pulled his wand out and headed for the door at top speed, slamming it behind him as he dashed out.Holding Harry close, feeling him tremble, Sirius began to guide him to the Floo room. “Nothing to worry about, Harry. We'll handle it,” he soothed as he got them in there. Seeing Harry nod, though looking wide-eyed and clutching Bugs tightly, Sirius grabbed a handful of Floo powder then tossed it in and called for Malfoy Manor. Within a minute, Lucius head was in the fire. Before the man could say anything, Sirius said, “James and Lily just showed up. Start things on your end and I will on mine. Then get your arses over here.”“Will do,” Lucius said, nodding, a thunderous expression on his face. Quickly, he cut the connection.Looking at Harry, he summoned a chair then had the young man sit down. “Just stay right there. I have a couple calls to make and we'll be good. Lucius and Cissy will be here quickly. Nothing at all to worry about. You know no one can get in here if we don't let them.”Plopping in the chair, petting Bugs, Harry just nodded, not sure what to say. He was uptight, angry and all kinds of other things he couldn't define. Right now, he was going to stay put and say nothing. Watching as Sirius got in contact with Rufus, who promised to be over in minutes, Harry looked at the window in the room as he heard Severus yelling. Even the normally calm Remus had his voice raised. Oh yeah, this was bad! Shaking his head, listening to Sirius confer with Madam Bones, Harry stood and walked to the window. Standing there, leaning against the wall, he watched the heated discussion between the four, listening to what was said. Sighing, he didn't know what to do. Looking back at Sirius when he felt the man’s hand on his shoulder, he asked, quietly, “Is it them?”“It is,” Sirius said, watching the confrontation, hoping like hell someone showed soon because even Remus looked like he was about to hex the two within an inch of their lives.“Why do they think just popping up will mean I want anything to do with them?” Harry asked, voice taking on an icy bite, eyes narrowing.“Got me, Harry,” Sirius said honestly, looking over his shoulder as the Floo activated. He gave a sigh of relief when Rufus stepped through followed by Kingsley and Tonks.“Where are they?” Rufus asked, looking thunderous.Pointing to the window, Sirius said, “Out there, having a not so friendly discussion with Remus and Snape.”“You two stay put,” Rufus told him firmly. Nodding to his two Aurors, he then took off towards the front door.Giving Harry's shoulder a squeeze, Sirius said, “Let him handle it. You know him, he'll deal with it. Madam Bones will be here in a few minutes to help. They'll take care of the whole thing.”Looking down, shaking his head, Harry said, quietly, voice shaking from rage, “I want to go sit in the kitchen. I can't deal with this.”“Yeah, good idea there,” Sirius said, kissing him on the top of the head. After one last glance at the window, dark eyes flashing dangerously, he led Harry away.
“What do you mean he's your son?” James asked, looking between the two men that had their wands trained on him and Lily, neither looking happy.
“Just what we said, James. Harry is our son. We adopted him a little over six months ago,” Remus told his old friend, yellow eyes flashing angrily. “And we say you aren't going to see him. That's all there is to it. He's finally getting better and is dealing with what happened, so what he doesn't need is both of you back in his life.”“Remus, we know we made a mistake, a big one. We want to try to make it up to him,” Lily said softly, looking between the two.“This was not a mistake, Lily,” Severus hissed, dark eyes flashing dangerously. “Dropping your son on the doorstep with only a note is not a mistake. You knew exactly what you were doing and how dangerous it was. The worst happened because of it. It was your choice. Now you can deal with the consequences. You are not seeing Harry, all there is to it.”Shaking his head, looking between the two, James didn't know what to do. They had plenty of information on what happened, at least from the papers, but didn't have much else as no one, anywhere, seemed to want to talk to them. Every old Order member they had contacted either slammed the door in their faces or refused to help. So, they were blindsided by some of this, like Remus and Snape being married then adopting Harry. “Look, just give us a chance. We'll make it up to him. We swear we will. Our kids want to get to know their brother,” he said, softly.“He's not their brother,” Severus snarled loudly, eyes narrowing. “Harry has no siblings. We're his parents. Not you. Get used to that idea, Potter!”“Look, let's get Sirius out here and talk about this. All of us. We can work something out here. Even if it's only an hour or so a week until Harry gets comfortable with it.” James said, looking between the two then glancing at his wife.“Oh, I would love to hear what Sirius has to say to you, James,” an icy voice coming up behind Severus and Remus said. Once outside the wards and visible, Rufus stood behind the two men, flanked by his two Aurors, arms folded over his chest. “I don't think spending twelve years in Azkaban without a trial for your murder puts you in his good graces.”Relieved that Rufus was there, Remus lowered his wand. “Thank Merlin,” he muttered.Looking at his old boss, eyes wider, James said, “Look, it was bad, I admit it. At least from what we heard. We didn't expect there to be a problem. Someone, somewhere should have said something and given him a chance to clear his name.”“They didn't,” Rufus told him, voice cold. Looking between Severus and Remus, he said, tone softening slightly, “I need you to let them through the outer wards this once. We don't want the Muggles hearing any of this. Amelia's on her way. As soon as she gets here, we're going to decide what we're doing.”“They are not getting in the house,” Severus told him firmly, lowering his wand stiffly.“No, not in the house. Just once through the outer wards so the Muggles don't see anything off,” Rufus assured him.Stepping back, Severus nodded and motioned them backwards, allowing the wards to admit James and Lily.Having his Aurors lead the two through the wards and keep a hand on them, Rufus glared at the two then asked, “Where is Albus?”“He's with the kids right now. We wanted to see Harry,” Lily explained, looking uncomfortable and glancing at Tonks.“You better give up where you're staying. We aren't going to play with you, either of you. Albus is in a world of trouble as well since he's the one that put Harry on that doorstep. If you don't give him up, it's more charges coming your way,” Rufus told the two plainly, looking between them. Voice going hard as granite, he said, “And you will not be seeing Harry unless he agrees to it. With as angry as he is about this, I don't see that forthcoming anytime soon.”“Rufus, if we could take this back, we would. This is never what we intended,” James said, looking uncomfortable. “We just want to get to know our son, apologize and make it up to him.”“Harry is not your son,” the sharp whipcrack of a voice said from behind Rufus. Stepping up, Amelia Bones looked at the two, eyes flinty, “Harry is the son of Severus and Remus. Nothing is going to change that. It's them that have the say in who sees him and who doesn't. If they say no, it's no.”
“Amelia,” Lily said softly, shaking her head, looking at her, eyes pleading. “We just want to get to know him.”“He wants nothing to do with you,” Severus shouted, going red in the face. “Your actions caused that young man more problems than he knows what to do with. He was tortured for years and forced to do things most of us couldn't even imagine. Get used to that!”“Look,” James said, trying to hold his temper. “Just—we want to try to get to know him. Give it a chance. If we have to, we'll take it to the Wizengamot to get permission.”
Stepping in front of all of them, facing the two, Amelia told James, tone deadly, “Try it, James. Just try. You won't win. Harry is months away from his seventeenth birthday. Anyone can tie it up until then. Even if you can get them to hear the case, the only one going to get slapped is you. Severus and Remus have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are good parents. They have gone above and beyond for Harry and still are. Harry trusts them, something no one thought would ever happen with anyone. They are good with him and have dealt with issues that you can't even begin to imagine.”“Fight us, James, go on,” Remus said. Though his voice was quiet, his tone was lethal. “There is something Harry wants more than anything in this world right now. We've got him to agree to hold off until his eighteenth birthday on it. You make one hint that this is what you're going to try and we'll sign the paper for him to do it without a second thought. We won't even wait until he's seventeen to do it.”“What's that?” James asked, looking around, rubbing his forehead. This was not going as planned, that's for damned sure.“To bond with Black, formally,” Severus told him, arms folded over his chest, thunderous look firmly in place.“What the hell?” James asked, looking between all of them. “Harry and Sirius are—together?”“Yes,” Rufus said, lifting his chin. “They are quite good together and adore each other. Don't say it, James. You have no input at all in what Harry does. He's happy with Sirius. Remus and Severus have no problem with it. As far as the rest of us in positions of authority are concerned, that's all there is to it. Right now, you need to worry about what charges we're going to lay on you and getting yourself out of them, not what Harry and Sirius might be doing.”Sighing, James looked around then said, “Alright, Rufus, what do we need to do here?”“We need to arrest you, both,” Rufus said, smirking in a feral way. “We're just deciding on the charges we're leveling.”Looking around, Lily shot Remus and Severus a pleading look then asked, softly, “Please, just talk to Harry. Let him know we at least want to tell him we're sorry.”
“We'll tell him. Don't expect any answer,” Remus told her, glaring in her direction.“And we sure as hell aren't putting a good word in for either of you,” Severus sneered, looking irate.
Seated between Sirius' spread legs at the table, Harry had his head in his hands, tuning out everything being said around him. Lucius and Miss Cissy were there by now and trying to help, he just didn't want to deal with this. For a while they heard some of what was said, but Lucius finally put a ward up to block the sounds. That helped. Feeling Bugs, who was in his lap, nuzzle him, he reached down and petted the rabbit, but refused to open his eyes. Until he heard the door to the kitchen open. Looking up warily, he was relieved to see it was just Severus and Remus, though both looked quite angry. Straightening up, he leaned back against Sirius and waited to see what they had to say.
Sitting down at the table by Narcissa, Severus waited until Remus seated himself by him then said, “Rufus arrested both of them. Amelia is leading a team of Aurors to get Albus right now and take charge of their other three children for the time being. James and Lily will probably be released tonight because of their kids. What charges are being leveled—I don't know. I also don't know how severe the penalties will be. However, our solicitor is at the Ministry right now getting a restraining order against all of them. That should keep them away as it's magically enforced.” Looking around, he shook his head then added, “They know some of what went on, not all, but some, and want to make amends.”“Make amends?” Harry asked, tone incredulous. “There is no way in hell they can ever do that!”“We know, Harry,” Remus told him gently. “We've told them you don't want anything to do with them. Lily asked for a chance to talk to you so she could apologize. We made it clear that's entirely up to you.”“Screw her,” Harry snarled, holding Bugs close. “I don't want to hear that shite! Apologies fix nothing.”“We made it very clear to both of them how you feel,” Severus told the angry young man. “And no one, anywhere, is going to force you to talk to them if you don't want to.”“No,” Harry said, shaking his head. “I don't want them anywhere around me.” Stopping, he thought it over, then added, “Until Rufus lets me have at them like he promised.”Knowing what the young man was talking about, Severus nodded, “That's fine, Harry. No one is going to try to talk you into anything.”Putting a hand on Harry's shoulder and rubbing it, Lucius said, “Tell me what was said. When your solicitor gets here, we'll work from there on whatever we need to do. I have no idea what harebrained scheme they have going, but it won't work.”Pleased that Lucius was thinking clearly, Remus nodded then launched in, explaining everything that went on.
