"What's wrong 'Mione?" He asked, looking up at her from his paperwork. He saw that she had tears forming in her eyes and set the quill in the ink pot to give her his undivided attention. "What happened? Are you alright?"
She shook her head, her frizz of hair swaying around her face, unable to look him in the eyes. As she started to silently sob, her shoulders heaved and her whole body shook. Ron stood up and walked over to her and went to put his arm around her. When she saw the show of affection, she flinched and pushed his arm away.
"I can't do this anymore. Not now. I need space." Her voice was barely audible, but Ron had heard her every word.
"Okay. So go home and we'll talk about it later, yeah?" Ron felt in his heart what was coming but was trying to avoid it. His heart fell heavy in his chest and his stomach began to churn.
"No, Ronald. I mean this. You and me. I can't be with you anymore." She found her courage and looked him straight in the eyes. "You are amazing, and sweet, and caring. You deserve someone so much better than me. I'm broken and crumbling fast. I'm scarred..." She cried, running her index and middle fingers along where Bellatrix had carved 'mudblood' into her forearm.
"I don't care about that Hermione! I love you!" His voice cracked and he fell into a crumpled heap on the floor, his head in his hands. He looked back up at her. "It'll be ok. You'll be ok. We'll be ok. You don't need to do this Hermione!" His eyes, pleading with hers, and searching hers for a hint of hope, were filled with tears. He made a motion to hold on to her hands, but Hermione Granger shook her head and turned away, walking towards the door. She heard him calling her name as she opened the door and walked out, but never looked back.
She sat in front of a mirror in her room trying to decide if she should wear her ballet flats or sneakers as she gingerly applied muggle makeup to her freshly washed face. Suddenly the memory of the last time she had seen and spoken to Ron came crashing over her, washing through her extremities and leaving her numb. She burst into tears and put her face in her hands, sobbing.
She stumbled to her feet and went over to her corner, picking up the bottle of wine and looked at the clock. She still had a couple of hours to burn before Malfoy was due to show up. She downed the bottle of wine within 20 minutes, sitting perched in her chair. Hermione then moved on to finish the bottle of vodka she had opened the other night, after her encounter with Draco.
She staggered into the bedroom, and looked at her makeup streaked face and started crying again. The tears cascaded down her face, and wracked her body with heavy shakes. Crumbling to the floor amoungst the clothing that lay about, she pulled her knees into her chest and continued to let the grief control her. She sat like that for a while before she heard the familiar pop of someone apparating.
"Granger?" He called, wondering if she was even there. She couldn't manage to find the words to speak out loud. Why was he so damn early?
He walked quietly into her room, saw her in her current condition and frowned. He could tell that she had been crying hard by the way her body still quivered, and he wondered what had her so upset.
"What's wrong with you this time?" Draco asked, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the door frame. He was wearing faded blue jeans, a pale green t-shirt and a pair of converse sneakers. Hermione looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with hurt and frusration.
"How dare you ask me that!" Her body started to shake harder in anger. "You know perfectly well what's wrong!" She pulled herself upright and shuffled over to her closet. She pulled out a fitted t-shirt and a zip up sweatshirt.
"Merlin's hat, you smell like a brewery... How much have you had to drink?" Malfoy eyed her, a look of sincere worry creeping across his face.
"Why would it matter to you?" Her words slurred. "Can you let me finish getting ready, since you decided to show up 45 minutes early?"
"I'm always early, in case you hadn't remembered." Draco stated as he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. He figured she wouldn't be ready yet, so he had brought some groceries with him to surprise her. Walking to her cupboards, he started to manually organized the non-perishables into the shelving and store all fresh foods into the small fridge that was at the end of the counter. By the time he was done, she was still in her room.
He took in the state of the front room and waved his wand, watching as the books stacked themselves into the built-in bookshelf in alphabetical order. Draco investigated the corner with the small plastic chair, seeing the bottles of alcohol he'd seen her buy the other day, some with a mouthful in the bottom, most of them empty and upturned. He frowned again.
"Granger! Can you come out here?" Complete and utter silence. He knocked on the doorto receive no response. He turned the door handle. Locked. He let out a sigh, unsure if he could magically unlock it or not and took a step back, kicked the door and watched it fall in.
She was gone. "Dammit!" He yelled and punched a hole in the wall beside the door before Apparating to the Burrow.
He landed outside of the tall house and looked around from where he was standing. He knew she would be on the property, but was unsure of whether she was inside or not.
He withdrew his wand from his pocket and pointed it ahead of him. "Lumos!" he said quietly and the end of his wand lit up. It wasn't completely dark, but it was dark enough now to need more light than the sky was providing. Draco heard a noise off to the right and in front of him, not too terribly far away from what he could tell.
Stepping towards the noise as silently as he could, he heard her crying faintly. He ran in the direction of the sound, and saw her sitting in one of the water pools that surrounded the house.
"Have you lost all your sense, Granger?" He stormed at her as soon as he reached her. "Don't you ever do that to me again!" She looked up at him.
"And just why do you care so much, Malfoy? I'm just a dirty mudblood to you, aren't I?" The platinum haired man plopped down to his knees in front of her, not caring if he was sopping wet, and grabbed her wrist to pull her into him.
"Hermione, you think that I'm as heartless as my father and that I share the same ideals. I can promise you that I am NOT him, nor anything like him."
"Is that why you never looked for me when I left?" She pulled herself out of his arms and landed flat on her back. Her balance was still off and she didn't even care how cold it was, or that she was currently completely wet. Part of her heart constantly wished for death, but the other part of her wanted to live just to see how this could work out.
"I did. I swear I did, and I didn't even know where to start. All three of us have been looking for you for months on end. Looking for leads, asking around if anyone had seen you..." He leaned over her in the shallow pool of murky water. "Potter and Weasel, they love you with all they are. It's been a constant search for you." Draco leaned closer to her, speaking softly into her ear. "And I care more than you'll ever know or understand."
Hermione started to quake. Not from anger, but from anticipation. The next thing she knew his lips were on hers. His warm soft lips on her cold, trembling ones.
"What the fuck, ferret?" A voice boomed from above them. He pulled off of her in one fluid movement.
Ron stood there with his wand pointed at Draco, his hand shivering in rage. Draco held his hands up and dropped his wand.
"Who do you think you are?" The ginger asked the blonde man, keeping his wand pointed at him as he moved over to stand beside Hermione. "Are you ok?" He said leaning down to help her up.
"Get off of me! I'm fine!" She said, pushing him away. Hermione rolled to her knees and hands, and pushed herself into the air, swaying slightly abd shivering from the cold even though she didn't really feel it.
"If you'll kindly lower your wand we could talk-" Draco started to speak, but was cut off by the infuriated man.
"Ronald!" Hermione shrieked at him, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "He didn't do anything wrong!"
"What's going on?" Harry inquired as soon as he was beside Ron. Ginny made her way over to Hermione and grabbed her hand, guiding her inside so that she could warm up.
"I came out here because I thought I heard something and I found that rat on top of Hermione, snogging her!" Ron spat, never breaking eye contact with Draco.
"Could you please lower your-"
"No! I should hex the hell out of you!" Ron shouted.
"Ron, you're being unreasonable." Harry said, pushing Ron's wand arm down.
"He was kissing her, Harry! He was kissing my Hermione!"
"You don't get to decide who she kisses, anymore. Last time I checked she broke up with you." Draco spoke calmly, reaching down to retrieve his wand.
"That doesn't give you the right to do what you did!" The angry red headed man growled, raising his wand again.
The next thing Ron Weasley knew he was on his back, feeling as though he was bound by ropes. Draco had casted 'incarcerous' using wordless magic. He placed his foot on his chest and also cast a langlock jinx on the young man. "Listen here. There is a lot you don't know about Granger, or about myself. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go check on her instead of carrying on a childish fight with someone who doesn't understand that Granger can snog whoever she pleases, since she's not YOURS anymore." He stepped off of Ron and looked at a shocked Harry Potter. "And here I thought me and him could be friends. How wrong was I?" He walked away, towards the house, and cancelled both spells before he took off at a sprint.
Ron laid there for a moment, before following Draco towards the house also at a sprint.
"You alright, Granger?" He asked kneeling in front of her, but not touching her.
Hermione was still shaking. She had a blanket around her shoulders and was sitting on the couch with Ginny sitting next to her with her arms around her attempting to warm the distressed girl up.
"I want to go home. But Ginny," she looked at the red haired girl with a playful scowl but her eyes said she was serious, "won't let me leave. Insists we stay for dinner."
"We?" Ron asked. "I don't want that ferret anywhere near here!" He started shouting again.
"Then I'm leaving too." Hermione stood up and handed the blanket to Ginny. "If he's not welcome, then apparently I'm not either. I let him kiss me Ron. And you don't get to decide who I can and cannot kiss."
She put her hand on Draco's arm and looked up at him. "Let's go home." She didn't have to say anything twice. He smiled at her and disapparated.
A/N
I hope you’re enjoying it thus far. Things are going to start getting good from this point on. I’d like to point out that I don’t have ANY intentions on doing Ron bashing, and this is the only time we’re going to see him like this. So, if that’s your thing, then by all means find another fic.
