Chapter 5
Snickering as he dug though the mass of products from Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes that were spread out on the table, Sirius nudged Harry, who was leaning against him, “Oh, you and I are going to have so much fun with these things! People need to watch out!”
Grinning at that, Harry said, reaching up to rub his eyes then shook his head, “I think you're going to have more fun with them than I am.”Hearing Lucius give an amused snort at that and Narcissa agreeing, Sirius laughed, “Maybe. It'll be plenty of fun for you too! You'll get to watch. I can't believe they gave you at least one of everything they have, except the girly stuff. Oh, this is great!”“It might be great for you, Sirius. However, the rest of us need to worry,” Remus told him with a bemused smile on his face, shaking his head. Looking down at the golden pygmy puff on the table in front of him, Remus stroked the creature's fur and said, “This is cute, though. What are you going to name him, Harry?”Shaking his head, Harry told him, “I don't know yet. I'm too tired to think of one now. I'll come up with something here.” Grinning a little, he added, “I'm just going to have to make sure that Hedwig doesn't eat him, thinking he's a snack of some kind.”“There is that,” Sirius chuckled, ruffling Harry's hair. Looking at the box for the portable swamp, he chuckled and suggested, “This would be great in the front hall. Oh, the panic that would ensue.”“Sirius,” Narcissa said with a firm tone and a glare, “these products are dangerous weapons in your hands! Behave with them!”Snickering, Harry leaned more heavily against his godfather and shut his eyes. Quietly, he said, “She has a point there, you know.”“I know. Which makes it all the more fun,” Sirius laughed, slipping an arm around his godson and giving him a pat on the back. Looking at him, he said, softening his voice, “Poppy should be here shortly. Rest if you want to, Harry.”“I'm dead on my feet,” Harry admitted with a sigh. It had been a very long morning for him. First, there was the big production to even get him to Diagon Alley. That took time as there were plenty that had to go along and the disguise for him. Then it took forever for Ollivander to get what he needed to make the wand. After that, they had sat most of the morning at the WWW shop, waiting for Ollivander to finish building the wand. That wasn't bad as he could relax. However, just as he would start to doze off, the bell over the front door would ring, waking him. Once the wand was ready, he had to spend quite a lot of time testing it to make sure it was channeling his magic right. After that, it was home, another big production. So, he not only ached, but was exhausted.Looking at the obviously mostly spent young man, Lucius gave a small smile then went back to looking at the specs for the wand. Keeping his voice down, he said, “I have a couple canes that will work for this. English oak is common enough and sturdy. I'll have the elves bring them over and let Harry chose. Once he's picked one, I'll send it off with Moody to the person that did mine. They can fit the cane with the wand in a way that's easy for him to draw it, not the way mine works as he has to have it for balance, and layer it with protections. As he's using the cane to compensate for the weakness in his left side and is right handed, they're going to have to work with it differently.”“Good plan,” Sirius said with a nod, putting the portable swamp aside. “Whatever it takes, let us know and we'll cover it.”Glancing at the dozing Harry, Lucius shook his head then added, softly, “We need height measurements and such before I do. Narcissa can easily handle that. This way, he can fit the cane to the perfect dimensions. Moody can fill the man in on what Harry needs it for so they can retool it correctly. If we go about it this way, Harry doesn't have to worry about so much.”“As we don't know how long he's going to need it and it might be something he has to have permanently, as we can't tell what damage might not be repairable, this is a good plan,” Remus said, looking at Harry.“It is,” Lucius admitted with a nod. Sighing, he said, “He may not like it as time goes on and he still has to use it, but it's for the best.”Looking up as he heard the front door open then footsteps coming their way, Sirius set aside the box he was looking at and waited. Seeing the door open then Moody usher Draco and Poppy in, he nodded. “No problems getting here?” He asked, keeping his voice down.“It went fine,” Moody told him with a firm nod. “Nothing to worry about and no hint of trouble. Albus made sure the two got out of the school with no one the wiser and no clue about where they were going. No one will know Draco's gone until supper.”“Good,” Narcissa said with a relieved tone in her voice as she patted her son's hand when he sat down by her.Bustling over and taking a seat by the dozing young man, Poppy pulled her wand and began to cast some diagnostic spells. While she did that, she asked, tone her normal no-nonsense one, “Fill me in on some of what you're seeing from him. I have the readings from Severus and his observations, but you're around him more.”Quickly, with the help of everyone around the table, Sirius filled her in on everything he could think of. When he finished, he said, “Aside from the obvious, we're most worried about how tired he is and the weakness in his left side.”Taking that in, nodding as she did, Poppy said, “Let me finish the readings, but I can give him something to help with the tired part. His body is still trying to heal itself and it's wearing him out because it's pulling at his magic to do it.” Looking around, she asked, “Are you looking into the spell that caused this? Albus told me Mr. Potter was able to describe the effects.”“We are,” Lucius told her with a firm nod. “Several of us are working on tracking it down. It will just take some time.”“Until we get that, we're going to press on how we are,” Poppy said firmly as she finished taking the readings she needed. Glancing at them, she asked, “His appetite and such are fine, aren't they? There are no signs of side effects from what he's taking or any indication the seizures are coming back?”“We're good on that front,” Sirius told her as Harry started to wake from his doze. Patting his godson on the back as he came around, he told him, “Nothing to worry about, Harry. Poppy is just taking some readings.”Sitting up straight, rubbing his eyes, Harry blinked then looked at the medi-witch and said hi. Glancing across the table, seeing Draco there, he nodded to him.“Nothing to worry about, Mr. Potter,” Poppy told the young man as she read through what was there. Looking up, she asked, “You have a way to get to St. Mungos and pick up potions with no one the wiser as to who you're getting them for?”“We do,” Moody told her firmly with a nod. “Give me the script for them and I'll handle it.”“I'll do that,” Poppy told him. “I'll give Severus the list as well so he can start brewing them for you. Several of them are going to take time, though, so I'll give you a script for a two-week supply. You'll keep him on the regimen he's taking, but I'm going to add a few more here. I'm not sure I can stop the trembling until the nerves heal more, but I can reduce them so it's not so extreme. It's going to take a combination of potions to do that. Some of this though--” she trailed off, shaking her head. “I'm not sure I can reverse or even help. I think it may heal itself over time, but there may always be some residual damage. Such as the weakness on the left side.” Looking at the young man seated there, she added, tone firm again, “I can give you some physical exercises to help strengthen areas. Those will improve it. I'll leave you instructions on them. Make sure you do that, Mr. Potter. Also, keep moving as you have been. That will only help. Just keep an eye out for any odd signs. I'm also going to caution that there may be some instances of extremely painful headaches coming as well. That is, sometimes, a side-effect of such injuries. If those start, I have a couple potions you can take for them. I'll send that along as well. Make sure you keep some on hand. If they do start, get in contact with me and I'll add a potion to prevent them.”Nodding, Harry said nothing, taking in what she was telling him and thinking it over.“Have you noticed anything else odd, Mr. Potter?” She asked, looking at him.“No, nothing. I told Professor Snape everything and Sirius wrote it down for those test things.” Harry told her.“Good. Anything at all odd comes up, contact me. With the new wand, some of the lethargy should end as your magic is channeling right once more. Work with it as well to get it functioning correctly. Just don't overdo it and rest when you need to. Don't push yourself too much.” Looking at Sirius, she asked, “Is he still staying in with you?” Seeing the man nod, she said, “Good. I don't want him alone for the foreseeable future.”“We were wondering if it's safe to side-along him with the seizures. That would be easier to get him somewhere if we have to go out,” Remus inquired, looking at her.Sighing, Poppy lowered the parchment she was looking at and gazed at the young man. Thinking it over, she said, “Let's wait another two months before we try that. I want to be sure that the potions are working. If there isn't another seizure in two months, it'll be fine. For now, use the Floo or a Portkey. I'll send you a medical release form for a Ministry-issued permanent Portkey that you can use. We have the documentation for it to go through.”Pleased with that, Sirius nodded. “Good. Lucius is handling all the forms for us as he knows what to do with them.”“I'm going to add you and Remus to the document as those caring for him. That way you can be included in the documents as he's still underage,” Poppy told him, pulling out official parchment for St. Mungos and writing out the potions they needed. “I'm going to leave a list of side effects to watch for. If you see any of them, contact me immediately and discontinue the potion. We have plenty we can use here and don't want to chance problems.” Stopping, she looked around then said, firmly, “No brewing potions for him. None at all. I know he wants to go into Auror training, but he can't do this, not with what he's taking. The fumes from some of them can counteract the potions he's taking.” Looking at the young man, she said, “I mean it, Mr. Potter. It's not something you can do anymore. I'm sorry that it derails what career plans you had, but we can't chance this.”“I understand,” Harry said softly, nodding. Right now, he wasn't too worried about that part as he had so much else to consider. Besides, it was one less thing to worry about.“Let me talk with Albus about getting Minerva over to work on another career plan,” Poppy said, going back to writing out what was needed. “Auror training isn't in the offing for the foreseeable future.”Patting Harry, Sirius said, “We'll work with it, Harry. There are plenty of other things you can do.” The physical problems Harry had right now would take him out of consideration for the Auror program. If some of it wasn't going to improve or go away, there was no chance he would get accepted, no matter how spectacular his grades.“I know. I'm not worried about it,” Harry admitted with a shrug.“Let's work on getting you better before we even ponder what you might do in that area,” Poppy said, finishing up what she was working on. Passing it to Moody and keeping a copy for her own records, she said, “That's what he needs. They'll give you the instructions for how he should take it. I'll make sure Severus gets to work on them.” Looking around, she said, “I'm going to head back to the school. If you need anything, don't hesitate to get in contact.” Seeing them all nod and hearing the thanks, she stood and swept out.Waiting until he heard the front door shut, Moody said, “Let me get this to the one who offered to handle it. I'll be back as quickly as I can with them.” Nodding, he then walked out, looking at the list.Feeling Harry lean back against him, Sirius said, “Lucius has a couple of canes for you to look at this afternoon sometime. Pick one and we'll send it off to get it fitted for you.”Nodding, Harry rubbed his eyes then sighed, “I think I need to take a nap. I'm falling asleep here.”“I figured,” Sirius grinned. “I'll help you upstairs.”
Looking at the list of potions he now had to take and reading the side effects while he ate his dinner, Harry was shaking his head. There were a lot of them, that's for sure. Quietly, he asked Sirius, “Any idea how long I'm going to have to take this mess?”
Sighing, looking at the list, Sirius said, “Honestly? I don't think any of us have a clue there. Some will be discontinued as you no longer need them. I think that's going to be about half of them. Others we don't know. And the chances are that you may be on some of them for the rest of your life. We have no way of knowing.”Nodding at that, he pushed the list aside with a sigh. He wasn't sure how he felt about some of it, though he was grateful that they were working. He just hoped that soon there wouldn’t be so many of them.Looking around as he ate, Remus said, changing topics, “How about we discuss how we're going to go about all this when it comes to schooling Harry and Draco?” Seeing nods, he said, “Sirius and I thought this; we're going to take this week off to get settled. The potions lab isn't ready yet, so we can't even start with that. Then there is the problem with Herbology and what to do there. Pomona is going to send us what we need, but we have to wait for that to get here and the elves to finish the small greenhouse in the back yard. We need to work with Harry and his magic still, at least a little so he can get used to his new wand. Next week we'll kick it all off with some of it. For Harry, that's mostly going to be theory only until we can get him to where he can work with some of the challenges he has. We're not sure how much we're going to have to deal with here, especially the trembling. We need those potions in his system to help that. Once we do start, we'll set up some time each day for certain classes, just like at school. Besides, we need time to prepare. Albus made sure we have the papers we need to follow with what needs taught.” Looking at Harry, he said, “We're also going to have to adjust for the change in classes he needs for a career. Anything with potions is out, so it might involve other areas we aren't prepared for yet.” Looking at Lucius, he said, smiling a little, “Arithmancy and Runes are all yours. Sirius and I are out of our depths there. Charms and Transfiguration we can easily handle. I believe we all agreed that all of us are going to take on DADA.” Quietly, he added, looking at Harry and shaking his head, “Anything to do with Care is out as we have no way to take that on here.”Snickering and grinning, Harry said, “Not interested in that, honestly. I don't want to get eaten by something.”Laughing at that, Sirius said, “Yeah, don't blame you there.” Sobering up, he asked, “Any idea at all what you might want to go into? The only thing we heard you mention was Auror training.”Thinking it over, Harry shrugged then sighed, “I don't know, honestly. That's the only thing that stood out for me. Nothing else seemed interesting.”“Let's see what Minerva brings over then go from there,” Lucius said to the young man. “We're hampered in this area because of the things already mentioned. We'll help you find something you like.”“Is there any kind of topic you like to learn about? Not something you necessarily heard about last year when this came up.” Narcissa asked.Thinking that over, looking at the table, Harry said, “I liked History in Muggle school. And what Lucius talked about while I was asleep was fascinating as well. The troll and goblin wars sure weren't. That was enough to make you fall asleep. The rest I liked though.”“That might be a good idea, Harry,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. “If you like reading or hearing about that, it could be a good choice for you. And it's something we can easily work with. You already have all the classes you need to take that on. And even if you want to go into that, it won't be hard to do as it's only the one class. As we have to drop you from a couple because of the problems, it won't be an issue. The only thing I can see here that might be a bother is essays and getting the books for them.”“I can easily take that topic on,” Lucius said firmly with a nod. “I'm rather a history buff, as a hobby anyway. Hogwarts hasn't had anyone continue on in History beyond what's required in almost a decade because of Binns. In fact, I don't even think they have an assigned book for it anymore. Which means, if this is what you want to try, we can get the summary of the basics needed for the NEWTs and work from there. I do believe that we may have to pick up Runes for it, at least the OWL level. That won't be a problem though and we can get that down quickly as he'll be the only one working with them and we don't have to concern ourselves with the rest of the class.”Thinking it over, Harry nodded slowly, “I like this idea. It's fascinating. Because, honestly, we've not learned much of anything with Binns and there is so much else out there.”“I'll see when Minerva plans on coming over and send this along to her. She may know what's required for it,” Sirius said.Looking across the table at Draco, Harry asked, trying to be nice, “What are you going into?”“I'm working towards being a Potions Master,” Draco told him. “Which is going to cause problems, but we'll manage.”“We will,” Lucius told him with a pat on the back. “It'll just take some work.”Looking at Potter's hands, seeing how badly they were trembling, Draco asked, keeping his tone quiet, “How much is the trembling going to affect what you have to do? I mean, it looks to me like it's going to throw a lot of things off.”“We don't know,” Sirius said honestly. “Which is why we need to work with him alone before even attempting to press on to where you are. He seems to be doing fine with most of it and the spells were working, at least partially, with his old wand. Starting tomorrow, we'll work some more to see what we're dealing with here. Remus and I thought it best not to have you two practice on each other for a while as we can't judge the reaction from his end and wand yet.”“We also have to worry about other physical problems, such as the weakness. We're not worried about it, honestly, and can take all the time we need,” Remus said. “We're expecting him to fall behind anyway because we have so much we have to compensate for.”Nodding at that, Draco glanced at Potter and wondered what this was going to be like. He wasn't all that thrilled to be out of school, but knew it was for the best. Though the relationship with Potter wasn't the best, it was at least someone his own age around. It was sure better than what was going on in school right now when it came to him. He'd work with it.Snickering and nudging Harry, grinning from ear to ear, Sirius said, “You sure you don't want to continue with Divination?”Rolling his eyes and snorting, Harry grunted, “No way. That's a joke.”“We could dress Remus up the way Trelawney does and it would at least be good for a laugh!” Sirius said, chuckling.Shooting Sirius a look, Remus said, “Ah, no, Sirius. That's not happening.”“That would be funny to see,” Draco snickered, looking down at his plate. “You'd have to get cologne that smells like booze though. To make it authentic.”“We won't even ponder that,” Remus said firmly, though smiling a little.Laughing, Harry shook his head, “No Divination. I've had more than enough of that.”
Sitting up on the edge of his bed, Harry looked out the window, panting heavily. From the clock, he knew it was close to two in the morning, so Sirius was out cold, snoring softly. Wiping a trembling hand over his sweat beaded brow, he shook his head. He had another of those really strange, eerie dreams he'd been experiencing since he woke up. This one, like the other, made no sense to him. It just seemed to be a series of disjointed images that related to all kinds of things in his life. Then you tossed in some of the weird imagery and experiences he had while he had been in a coma, and it was bloody unnerving.
Shutting his eyes, head dropping forward, he tried to calm himself down and get his heart to quit racing. Hearing the springs on Sirius' bed creak slightly, he concentrated on taking deep breaths to calm himself. He was startled a couple of minutes later by Sirius' voice. Jumping, eyes widening, he looked in that direction.
