In time, Evie confirms that she is pregnant; and she and Sirius are both over the moon. He strokes her belly gently, telling the child inside to grow strong, telling him or her over and over again how loved they are and will be.
Ron and Hermione stop in for a visit a week or so before the school term starts, grinning at each other seeing Evie and Sirius together and clearly so much in love.
Phineas returns to his portrait the following afternoon, and yells for one or both of them; saying that he has just had quite the shouting match with Dumbledore over their situation, and that while it did finally calm down somewhat, they can expect Albus on their doorstep at any moment. The front door flies open almost immediately, and Phineas smiles and tells them not to doubt themselves.
Once inside, Dumbledore grabs Evie by the arm and hustles her into the kitchen, ignoring Sirius completely. Sirius can hear their voices but not what they are saying; thankful at least that neither of them is shouting.
They come back out finally, and Dumbledore addresses both of them. He says, “Who knows about this, other than me?”
Evie replies, “Only Ron, Hermione, and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.”
Dumbledore looks at her for a long moment and then says, “Well, at least you’ve been smart about one thing.”
Sirius says nothing, but he is at least a little relieved by the direction of the conversation. He sees that Dumbledore isn’t really objecting to their relationship; it’s more the risk of bringing a child into a world where they will be guaranteed to be a target once discovered.
Dumbledore shakes his head at them, and says, “I agree with Phineas that you should not come to Hogwarts this term, Evie. Your pregnancy would be impossible to hide. I’ll go to the Burrow next and see Miss Granger and Mister Weasley, and we’ll manufacture a good enough excuse for you not to be joining them this term. But, as there are things you still need to learn, I’ll send trusted members of the Order as often as they can be spared, to tutor you.”
Evie nods, and Dumbledore turns to Sirius finally and puts a hand on his shoulder, and says, “Take good care of her, Sirius. I am counting on you to protect her.” Sirius nods and looks down, still as much in awe of Dumbledore as he was when he was a student himself.
*****************
Different members of the Order arrive in due course to give their lessons; and each is only told about the situation at the time they are first called to give one. Kingsley Shacklebolt is all business and makes no comment; Arthur Weasley gives her a hug; Mad-Eye Moody teases them both irreverently.
But when Remus arrives in his turn, he is furious and throws a punch at Sirius immediately, catching him completely off guard and laying him out in the floor. Evie is shocked and moves towards Sirius, but the look that Remus gives her warns her off, letting her know in no uncertain terms that this is between the two of them and he will stop her if she tries to interfere; and she withdraws into the study instead. When Sirius finally gets back up, Remus grabs him and hustles him into the kitchen much as Dumbledore had with Evie.
Once there, Remus begins shouting at him, starting with “Sirius, your own goddaughter …how could you!!! I’ve never said anything about your many conquests, but this is too much. You’re supposed to be protecting her, not taking her to bed!”
Sirius doesn’t know how to answer, he doesn’t have Evie’s sure confidence and Remus’s barrage of accusations brings all his old doubts to the surface again.
Remus stops shouting finally, but his voice is still tight as he goes on, “There’s no doubt that Evie is beautiful. Hell, even I had a few slightly impure thoughts about her, when I was teaching her how to produce a Patronus. But I didn’t think for a moment about acting on them. I can’t believe you’d do this.”
Sirius offers no defense, just sits down at the table and hangs his head, and finally Remus leaves him in the kitchen to find Evie for her lesson.
He finds her composed in the study, and thinks somewhat guiltily to himself how much more beautiful she is with her pregnancy just beginning to show. He can’t quite meet her eyes, being ashamed of his own thoughts and of Sirius; but she comes to him and lifts his chin, forcing him to look at her.
She says, “I know what you’re thinking, but it wasn’t like that. I know Sirius has a bit of a reputation, but he didn’t seduce me. Here, see for yourself…”
Going over to a small Pensieve in the corner of the room, Evie pulls out her wand and pulls a silvery thread of memory out, dropping it in. She leaves the room, telling Remus that she’ll go make some tea and leave him to judge for himself.
She finds Sirius still in the kitchen, and he looks up as she enters, eyes and face full of a mixture of despair and self-loathing. She goes to him and pulls him to his feet, into an embrace, and tells him what she’s done; that she is positive that Remus will see things much differently after seeing how it unfolded for himself. She kisses him softly, telling him that it will be all right, he’ll see. Sirius grasps at the hope she’s offered, once again amazed by her composure and maturity.
Sure enough, Remus finds them in the kitchen not long after, Sirius sitting at the table silently watching Evie making tea. Remus can’t really look either of them in the eye and doesn’t seem to know what to say, so Evie excuses herself for a moment so he can make his amends to Sirius without an audience.
Remus says, “I’m sorry, Sirius. Evie showed me, and I saw how reluctant you were. I guess I just hadn’t realized how much she’s grown up; that she’s old enough to make her own decisions now. I should have realized that you wouldn’t take advantage of her, and I am happy for you both.”
Sirius gets up and hugs him, saying “It’s all right, Moony. There have probably been plenty of other times that I deserved a good smack and you didn’t give me one, so I think we can call it even.”
They grin at each other and when Evie comes back, she’s happy to see they’ve made up again. Sirius is all smiles and gathers her up into a hug while Remus looks on indulgently; Evie is amused that now he’s acting almost as though getting them together had been his idea all along.
Tonks is Evie’s next instructor and she grins at both of them; Remus had of course admitted to her what had happened and she found it pretty amusing. After the lesson, she sits down with Evie and wants the scoop; she had a very hard time convincing Remus herself (and is quite a bit younger than he is as well, so they had something in common there also).
Evie has fun gossiping with Tonks and finally they’re laughing so much that Sirius pokes his head in and asks, “Is this is a magic lesson, or a hen party? And if the latter, why wasn’t I invited?”
He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively and they both giggle at him, and then Tonks winks at Evie and says, “I need to go anyway, I know when three is a crowd…”
The next visiting instructor is Snape; and upon seeing the two of them and Evie’s blossoming pregnancy, he is even more caustic than usual. Once alone with Evie in the study for her lesson, he glowers at her, saying, “I fail to see why I need to take time out of my day to come give private instruction to a hormone-laden teenager. Just because you were stupid enough to get pregnant, especially with an idiot like Sirius Black, doesn’t entitle you to being catered to. Unless you are ‘the Chosen One’, apparently.”
Evie doesn’t say anything, knowing that there’s little point. He continues to glare but when she doesn’t respond, he finally goes through a few dueling spells with her. But he is unrelenting with his intentionally hurtful comments, eventually completely reducing Evie to tears; at which he stalks out and says he has no time for teaching weak, emotional crybabies.
Phineas (who had come to watch the lesson, unnoticed by either Snape or Evie) clears his throat after Snape leaves, and Evie looks up. He is looking at her sympathetically, and says, “Don’t take it personally, there’s a bit more to it than you know. Snape and Sirius were in the same year at Hogwarts, and well… just suffice it to say they didn’t get along so well. Plus, there’s a lot more to Professor Snape than meets the eye.”
Sniffling, Evie says, “He’s an insufferable beast, Phineas. I don’t care what his ‘issues’ are, he doesn’t need to take them out on me like he does, and really always has.”
Phineas nods, saying, “True enough. But consider that Professor Snape has never married, and he’s the same age as your father and Sirius. Then consider how much Sirius wanted this child. Don’t you think it might be just a little galling, to see your rival have yet another thing that you don’t have?”
Evie stops to consider that as Phineas goes on, “And then on top of it, to have to come to his home and give instruction to a single student because of it, when likely no other Hogwarts student would be so accommodated? We know that it’s not because Dumbledore is playing favorites, and so does he; it’s important that your pregnancy not be discovered by the other side. But it’s still quite an inconvenience, and it means having to come to his rival’s home as well. Now, imagine you having to do something like that for your biggest rival; do you think you’d be gracious in that situation?”
Evie had never thought about Snape’s personal life (or lack of one) in any way, nor really about how he might feel about having to come to Grimmauld Place particularly. She knew he’d come here for Order meetings before, but knows he hadn’t actually been all that enthused about that either; and it would still be a bit different than this is. She mulls it over and realizes that Phineas does have a point, even if she doesn’t really want to have to admit that he does.
She says, “You’re probably right, I’d probably be a little grumpy about that as well. I still think he’s an insufferable beast, though.”
Phineas grins and she can’t help but smile back at him, and even laughs a little. She decides that she won’t tell Sirius about the lesson, knowing that he would most likely react violently and it wouldn’t do anyone any good.
Phineas of course knows much more than he’s telling. But he also knows that Snape’s deep and enduring love for Evie’s mother Lily is not his story to tell; even though Snape technically only swore Dumbledore to silence about it and not all the prior headmaster’s portraits as well.
He knows that not only is it galling to Severus for Sirius to have something Snape doesn’t; it’s also sort of a repetition of history for him, especially because Evie looks so much like her mother. Even if Snape never had any conscious or even unconscious designs on her himself, still for her to choose his greatest rival, exactly as her mother did, can’t help but reopen old wounds.
