Last time:
“Would diagon be too much for them right now?” Narcissa asked, unsure after what happened when they flooed in.
“It will be a test but I am sure he can manage.” Marco said, “Though it might be a good idea for him to go see a mind healer. Just to help him work through what happened to him.” He said watching Harry now also petting a large rabbit that had hopped over to him and sought cuddles. Though Harry was still uncertain about the animal he was making contact with Jacob guarding his back.
Chapter 5 Diagon ally
“Harry, do you want to go to the shops and gets some new clothes?” Narcissa asked cheerily, looking forward to an afternoon shopping and getting. Harry nodded but his shoulders slumped a little and the whole boy seemed to shrink.
“Jacob can go with you,” Marco said, watching the child before him, not understanding how anyone could have hurt him like this.
“We will travel by floo again, like we came here.” Narcissa said, gently taking Harry’s shoulder, remembering how he had responded earlier. “It’s a special way to move between places but it won’t hurt you.” Lucius said, picking up on his wife’s plan. “As long as you stay close to us, hold your arms in and keep a firm grip on Jacob collar you will be fine.” Lucius said softly.
The family thanked Marco and made their way to diagon using the entrance at a quiet upscale restaurant. Lucius stopped Narcissa before she cold rush out. Harry had not touched his chocolate earlier and wanted some more time to prepare the boy.
“Let’s have some lunch and refreshments here before we rush around,” the patriarch suggested, signaling the maître for a private room.
Harry was strangely fidgety, shifting around and turning his head restlessly. Even refusing to sit in a chair to wander the room with Jacob. When the food Lucius ordered around they tried to get the boy to sit down but the boy just kept jumping up and moving around again, mapping the room.
“Come eat something dear.” Narcissa said once again. Finally Harry perched down like a little bird and nibbled on the sandwiches on his plate.
Suddenly Narcissa realized something. When Draco had been this age he needed the bathroom always and she had no idea when Harry had gone last time.
“Love, I need to use the bathroom. Will you excuse me.” She said, “Harry, you should go too before we head about.” Lucius looked up startled when Harry rushed out after Narcissa at a small run.
He suddenly realized truly what they had taken upon themselves. Severus had begged out of the shopping trip, claiming to have to brew Harry’s potions. But in truth his lover had always been a misanthrope, hating any place with crowds. He had only survived all those years at Hogwarts out of fear that Dumbledore would drop his protections. Draco had always been an outspoken child, making sure his parents knew exactly what he wanted and needed, if needed though tantrums and screaming. Now they were dealing with a traumatized boy that did not appear to let them know what he thought or needed.
Narcissa came back followed closely by Harry who seemed a lot calmer and even nibbled away at his sandwich until half of the large serving was gone. Finally the adults ordered some coffee and Harry got another cup of chocolate.
“Harry, we will be shopping for some clothes, toys and books. We will also visit a special store where you will get something called a wand, a pet store for something for Jacob and a special store for blind people.” Narcissa said cheerily, Harry just sat still. “Is that alright?” she pressured a little. Harry just shrugged, sipping at his drink.
Narcissa shared a worried look but let it go.
“Clothes first,” she decided regally, the men trailing behind her out of the restaurant to the first store. Harry obediently modeled different styles, fabrics and colors for the women who cooed over him and told him how cute he was at different stores until Lucius put a halt to the clothes part, telling his wife firmly that they could come back later and needed to get the other things.
“To the toy store.” He decided hoping to give Harry a break and a reward for his good behavior. Harry finally ended up with several stuffed animals, a board game and some self-reading story books which he seemed really taken to and which brought tears to Narcissa’s eyes when she realized he never had been read too. At the pet stores they got treats and several beds for Jacob. Harry had been strangely drawn to the snake tanks but Narcissa deftly redirected him to less poisonous animals.
Next Lucius took Harry into nockturn ally to get a well-tuned wand without a trace so they could start teaching Harry magic while Narcissa traversed muggle London to a shop specially equipped to cater to visual impaired people.
When they met an hour later Harry had a basic training wand of holly and phoenix feather and a promise that once he had some training he could come back to have a wand crafted specially for him. As Narcissa was gushing about the store and all the possibilities neither adults noticed that Harry fell behind, fatigued by the day he just had and slowly being swallowed by the afternoon crowd.
A large heavy set man brushed by Harry roughly making him stumble and grab onto Jacob to stay up but the flashback to his uncle made him terrified. Jacob sensing his fear led him out of the crowd to a quiet corner between some displays where Harry hugged him shivering.
“Harry?” Charlie called out, surprised to find the boy again alone after only seeing him last taken by Professor Snape. Although he now is accompanied by a large dog that was studying his every move wearing a bright vest that read ‘service dog, do not pet’.
The boy’s shivers decreased slowly and he relaxed a little more.
“I am glad to see you again Harry.” Charlie said softly, smiling at the smaller boy. Aware that it would also carry in his voice. “You look a lot better. Has professor Snape been taking good care of you?”
Harry nodded a little.
“That is good to hear,’ Charlie continued. “Is he here with you?” the redhead asked, searching the crowd but Harry shook his head. Confused Charlie studied Harry again. He was dressed in a warm cloak of good quality and clothes that did not quite fit him but looked a lot better than the rags he had worn before. “Did you come here alone?” again Harry shook his head making Charlie even more confused and Harry started to fidget nervously.
“I am sure whoever is with you will come back for you soon. Why don’t we wait for them together?” Charlie said, hoping to calm Harry down as he continued to scan the crowd for anyone that could belong with Harry. Until he saw two frantic looking blonds rush towards him. He had heard that professor Snape and Lucius Malfoy were friends.
“Weasly.” The blond patriarch said coldly, being faced with the spring of a family he was feuding with together with his new charge.
“Lord Malfoy.” Charlie said, bowing formally to the patriarch. Lucius was surprised by the proper greeting.
“Do you know my ward?” Lucius asked weary.
“We met at kings cross a few days ago when had had gotten lots, Sir.” Charlie said, “When I saw him wander alone I feared he had once again gotten lost and thought it prudent to stay with him until his caretakers come for him.” Suddenly feeling very grateful for Bill’s advice to learn the pure blood etiquette.
“You are the second heir?” Lucius startled him.
“I am sir, I have one older brother currently in Egypt for Gringots.”
“You just finished Hogwarts, what are your aspirations?”
“I have been accepted as an apprentice at a dragon reserve in Romania. After I receive my mastery I hope to find employment here in Britain.” Charlie answered. Lucius nodded thoughtfully
“Those sound like solid plans. If you ever require someone to put in a good word for you let me now. Harry is a good judge of character and he seems to like you.” Lucius said, nodding at the young man and leading a calmer Harry off towards the floo.
Severus hearing the floo chime and quickly put a stasis charm over the nutrition potion he was finishing up and hurried upstairs to see how it went. He found them in the living. Harry looked pale faced and absolutely exhausted. Worried Severus send a light diagnostic charm at the boy but it reported back nothing new. Conjuring a thick warm blanket Severus gently covered Harry and made sure he was securely on the couch. As soon as the boy was horizontal he was off to sleep.
“I guess it was a bit too much.” Narcissa said softly, taking the harness of Jacob.
“We need to learn his limits and he needs to learn to tell us and trust us to listen.” Severus said sadly looking at the small form on the couch. “We will take a few days calm for him to relax and recover. Did you manage to get all the shopping done for now?” Snape asked.
“He is doing well with the dog and seemed more confident moving around. He was reluctant to accept gifts but we got him some toys and educational materials. The shop for visually impaired was amazing and there are some many ideas and aids.” Narcissa bubbled.
Severus smiled at her, glancing at the small form on the couch. Harry slept restlessly, turning and struggling against the blankets. He tried to calm the distressed boy but the more he tried the more distressed Harry became.
Frowning he stepped back. Harry had no good experiences with people and his presence seemed to do more bad than good. Jacob wandered over and before Severus realized what the dog intended to do the massive animal jumped up on the couch, firmly squashing Harry against the back of the couch. The boy calmed immediately and after a few moments even threw his arm around the big dog. Smiling Severus enlarged the couch a little so the large dog could also lay comfortable.
“Let him sleep a few hours before dinner. Tonight I want to start him on the scar reducers that hopefully will bring his voice back.” Severus said wishfully.
Two hours later they woke Harry for dinner, knowing the underweight boy could not skip any meals. Sleep drunk, the small boy aided by Jacob made his way to the dining room. The potions master frowned when Harry only picked at his food, not really eating when until now he had taken every advantage to eat and Harry and not eat that much at lunch either. Finally Severus send for one of the just finished nutrition potions and convinced Harry to take it before taking the boy up to his room tucking him in and setting a ward to alert him if his ward became distressed.
Seeing how a house elf had set up Jacob’s bed and a bowl of food and water gave him an idea. Sending a house elf for some juice and snacks for Harry to have in his room. Severus hoped that it would discourage Harry from hoarding food. From all the research he had done he knew that may children who were food deprived when younger would feel unsure and hoard food.
After Jacob lapped up some kibble and loudly slobbered some water the dog disdainfully regarded the dog bed and jumped up on the bed to snuggle up with Harry.
Tired he rejoined the Malfoy’s at dinner. “He is fast asleep again. Next time if we take him out, it should only be for half a day and nothing as strenuous as today.” Severus said, worried by how weakened Harry seemed after just a day of some shopping.
“If he has not recovered tomorrow we will summon the healer.” Lucius told him, hoping to appease his worried lover.
“I don’t dare to start him on the scar reducers now if he is already weakened. The healers need to see him again. It is not normal for him to be this tired.” Narcissa said, feeling guilty. “He was not showing how tired he was during the day.
“He will continue to hide his weaknesses form us. It is common for people who have been abused. I also ordered the house elves to keep a supply of food and drink ready at his room which hopefully will prevent him from hoarding but if we do see him let it be. He will be food insecure and keep his own little emergency store especially since he seems uncomfortable around us while eating.” Severus said sadly. Harry’s behavior was confusing him more than he liked.
All the adults felt unhappy, checking up on Harry before they went to bed.
