Even though classes had been in session for over a week, Hermione found herself in her first class of the semester. She'd taken up a first row desk and watched as all her new classmates filed in. One by one seats were taken; each one filled except the one right next to her. She heard the rumble of the chair moving next to her and looked up to see none other than Malfoy taking the vacant seat.
They carefully looked each other over and Hermione quickly looked away to hide the color rising in her cheeks. Draco chuckled slightly, "if you're going to turn red like that when after we sleep next to one another, what color do you turn when you sleep with somebody?" Malfoy had said it carelessly, not thinking about the consequences. For a moment, he'd forgotten about her situation. He quickly caught onto his lapse in judgment when he saw her face. Once again tears were on the brim of flowing and look of terror was visible for all to see.
"Bullocks," he muttered, "I'm sorry Granger, I didn't mean to upset you again. I wasn't thinking." As the blond struggled the right words to reassure his deskmate, she composed herself. Wiping away her tears and straightening her back she replied, "what is there to think about Malfoy? I'm not upset. Stop your blubbering."
"Actually, how about you both shut it before I deduct points from both houses," Snape's smooth tone cute in, "Mr. Malfoy, you know how I loathe to do so. But if you don't stop gossiping like two first years I will do it." Malfoy shook his head and cast his gaze down. He wasn't one to back off from a fight but getting into it with his Godfather was not something he needed to do right now.
There were no more distractions for the entire DADA class. Hermione was gathering her things when she heard Snape, "Granger, Malfoy, a word." It left no room for argument. They were to have a meeting with Snape. Right then and there.
Slowly, she got up - holding her books to her chest and her bag slung over her shoulder - and followed her Professor into his office. She realized she'd never been in there before. It was your typical Slytherin office, she presumed, complete with a gaudy desk and leather-covered chairs. Draco looked right at home as he slid into one of the two chairs in front of the Professor's regal desk chair.
Snape broke her reverie by saying, "Hermione, please take a seat." He was pointing at the one next to Malfoy. The bitterness and anger in his voice was gone. Somehow, he sounded like a uncle speaking to his niece and nephew. "Hermione, Draco seems to have figured out what's wrong with you. He hasn't told a soul, I can assure you, but seems to not have the tact or knowledge to deal with it." A small, outraged hump was heard from the blond while Hermione just sat by shocked. Snape continued, "dear girl, please tell me so we can help you. Are you still mourning the loss of your child? Has the tension in Gryffindor been worse than Minerva or I thought?" Each question was answered by a shake of the head. No. No. No. She was not going to talk about this, not with Snape and Malfoy!
"Granger, it's ok. You can trust uncle Severus," Draco whispered as he reached out for her hand. She snatched it away and stood up as quickly as she could. "I might be able to trust him, but this is not something I wish to talk about. Ever." Hermione was shacking as she said the words. She felt the crackle in the air and before she knew it, both Slytherins no longer had a mouth or ears. Snape looked rather amused from what she could tell while Draco looked infuriated. Steam would have come out of his ears, if he had any. Apparently, she didn't want them hearing or saying anything else.
Calming herself down, Hermione undid the spells. "I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me," she muttered as the tears she had contained earlier streaked her cheeks. Snape got up from his perch and engulfed the young woman in his arms, he was soothing her as well as explaining what had happened. "Both today and on the train you had a small magic explosion. Like when you were a child and didn't know how to control it. I know, you've spent years studying and learning how to keep it in check. But is seems that whatever is wrong has you slightly unbalanced, Hermione. It's been noted before that in highly traumatic circumstances this can occur. I'm sure the war had its toll on you...are you sure you are ready to be back here?"
Between Severus talking theory and his comforting arms around her, Hermione was able to collect herself and shake her head into his chest. "Severus, I...I'm ready to be back in school, to put everything behind me. And to put a lot of space between myself and Ronald." The last part was so faint the former spy barely heard it. He raised an eyebrow at his god son, but only got lips being pressed together as a response.
