Chapter 5
“Right, this is what we're going to do,” Sirius sighed, looking around as he stood in the kitchen at Grimmauld Place. “This is the worst of the lot, so we're shifting as many elves here as we can and gutting everything out of this place then we'll shift some of the good furniture in from other houses.”
Running a finger over the inch thick dust on the table, Harry wrinkled his nose at it then cleaned his hand off. “Why can't we just have them clean and sell it off that way? We're doing that with a few of the others.”“I have a feeling, of all the houses we're putting up for sale, this one will be the most desirable,” Sirius told him with a sigh. “It's the location and the protections on it. My father fortified it the best he could. Most don't know about it either. The Unplottable alone will have plenty clamoring over it. That's the reason I want it up as good as we can get it, so we can get the best price. I know we have plenty of money and want out, but the more we get out of this, the better off we're going to be. I'm sure you know that.”“True,” Harry nodded. “I didn't think about that. My focus has been more on getting this done as fast as we can and doing a runner again.”Putting a hand on Harry's back, he patted it then said, “I think that's where both our focuses are, honestly. We just need to keep a leash on it and do what's best. Nothing more. We've got plenty to attend to, so this isn't a hardship. The other houses are all in decent shape and won't take much, thankfully. This one is just disgusting.” Sighing and looking around, hating the sight of the house he grew up in, Sirius told him, “We have one thing to take care of before I set the elves to going hard at it. There is a bedroom on the second floor we need to seal completely and sound proof. I don't want them touching it.”“Why's that?” Harry asked, curious. Though he wanted to look around as he hadn't been in this place other than the time just before they left the country together the first time, he wouldn't. He was well aware that houses that sat empty this long could be dangerous. That he wasn't going to chance. They needed to stick together on this.“There is a painting in there of one of my relatives. Most are just annoying. This one, though, has another painting and it's in the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts. We do not want him blabbing to Albus about activity in this house.” Sirius told him with a sigh. “We're tending to that bit personally.”Understanding that completely, Harry nodded. “Gotcha. That is something we need to handle, that's for damned sure. No chance we want that old man knowing we're back. I'd prefer if we could manage this without anyone being the wiser, but we know that's probably not going to happen.”“No, it won't. Something will end up giving it away,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “Let's just see how long we can hold it off. The more we can get done, the faster we can get out of here. If it happens, I'm hoping like hell that it holds off until we're close to getting out of this nightmare.”Scratching his goatee and looking around, Sirius shook his head. “Let's take a walk around after we tend to that room. The elves can handle almost all of it, but there'll be some bits we have to do ourselves.” Beckoning Harry to follow, wanting to check a few places to make sure he got everything he wanted out of the place, though he was sure he had, he told him, “I'm having the elves collect anything in this shitehole they can't destroy as it's too dangerous or their magic won't be able to. Those we'll have to take on ourselves. Not a hardship as we can easily tend to almost everything. So, that's something we're going to have to keep an eye on.”Nodding as he trailed along, Harry asked, keeping a wary eye out and his hand on his wand, “What about pests? I know they can handle most anything, but there are a few their magic won't manage with.”“Another thing we have to take on,” Sirius admitted. “I imagine that's coming from all of the properties, honestly, though this one will be the worst when it comes to that. They'll keep a running list and deliver it when they get something they can't tackle. Again, nothing we won't be able to manage to get rid of. It'll just be a bit bothersome to have to hop around and take care of it. We can handle that easily.”Stopping at the room he wanted to seal, Sirius then cast a temporary silencing charm on it. Motioning Harry forward, he said, “Silence it the best you can. That's always been something you've been better at. Once you do, I'll take on the sealing. If we can manage to get out of here with no one the wiser, I'll make sure that it's listed that this home has the one room not done. If we're found out, we'll get rid of the painting and let the elves have at it.”“Good way to handle it,” Harry nodded, glancing down the hallway after he finished putting up the best silencing charm he knew and waited for Sirius to tend to his bit.“Let's finish up and let me check on a few things then we're going back to Pooh Manor.” Sirius told him, motioning Harry to follow when he finished.Trailing along, taking in everything and wrinkling his nose at not only what was there but how disgusting it was, Harry sighed. Even with every elf they could manage to get here, this place looked like it would take forever. Shaking his head, he asked, “Before we head back, can we stop somewhere and get a snack to take home? Fancying some Muggle fast food, honestly. We couldn’t get most of what they have here where we were.”“We can do that,” Sirius nodded with a bit of a grin. “I think we'll both enjoy it. We need to pick up some brochures or something about places where we can go have fun, too. If we do the Muggle bits like we have been, we should be fine as we'll blend into the crowd just fine. Because staying locked up in that house all the time will make both of us completely mental.” Snorting, he then gave Harry a playful punch on the arm and said, “Just remember; no highest, fastest, biggest whatever when it comes to that shite. I had my fill of that with that water slide in Brazil. You are not talking me into that again because I about shite myself doing that bit.”Grinning, shoulders shaking, Harry told him, “It was a riot, Sirius. The look on your face was worth the whole thing. For all you like to do, that bit was something I wouldn't have thought would faze you. It did and it was a right riot.”“For you!” Sirius laughed. “It wasn't for me! I had nightmares about that damned thing for about a week afterwards. No chance, Harry. We're not doing that bit again. I can handle the normal things like that and coasters, but not the ones like that. No chance.”Checking in rooms for whatever with Sirius, Harry chuckled evilly then asked, “So, bungee jumping again is out of the question?”“Fuck yes it is!” Sirius told him, snorting. “No way in hell. We did that one time. And one time was more than enough, thank you very much. We are never, ever, doing that again. I don't give a shite. The basilisk ride in India—that wasn't bad. Stuff like that I can handle again.”“It was ancient and blind, Sirius! That wasn't even slightly exciting as it just kinda' slithered along slowly. You could almost hear it groan in a tired way. Driving on those twisting winding roads in South America was more thrilling,” Harry told him with a roll of his eyes.“Be that as it may, we are not doing shite to scare me half to death again,” Sirius snorted, still grinning. “We'll find some fun, though, no worries. We can even hop to the continent and take in some of what's there as it's not a bad Apparation or whatever. That we can handle.” Sirius told him, planning to have plenty of fun to offset the nightmare that was going on around them. The more they got out and had fun, the less likely they were to focus on just how bad this was and what would happen if they were found out. That would make both of them mental if they couldn't distract themselves.
Tossing the last of the paperwork he filled out aside, Sirius leaned back into the squishy settee he and Harry were seated on. More crap to fill out, of course. Not unexpected, but still mind numbing. Glancing at Harry, who had finished as well and was slouched by him, legs stretched out, he moaned. “Are you done as well? Or do you have more to go?” He asked, not moving.
“I'm done,” Harry moaned, shaking his head. “Even if it wasn't done, I'm done. I can take no more. My brain is melting and starting to ooze out my ears from that boring shite.”Laughing at that, as it was true, Sirius admitted, “I feel about the same way.” Looking at Harry, he reached over and rubbed his chin. There was a bit of a five o'clock shadow there. Not unexpected considering how dark his hair was. Smiling at that, remembering the fun they had when he taught his godson how to shave, he said, “You look good with the scruff, honestly.” Seeing Harry look at him and smile, he added, “You might want to consider letting it grow out a tad. Not much, but a bit of a close cut beard. That will help disguise your looks. Either that or a bit more of the shadow than you have now.” Reaching up, he smoothed down his own whiskers and admitted, I might want to go with a bit more of that myself rather than the styled bit I do. It can only help. Snorting, he grinned, “It isn't like we can't get rid of whatever quickly.”Reaching up and rubbing his hand over his lower face, hearing the rasp of his beard against his hand, Harry thought it over then gave a slow nod. “I'll do that. At least one day's growth. It should be enough to help. I don't think I could handle the whole beard. That was something I tried before and it just itched too much for me.” Shaking his head, he added, “I don't know how you do it.”“Used to it,” Sirius grinned. “I've had this thing since I could grow it out and it looked good. I honestly don't remember what it's like not to have one.” Sighing, he said, “I don't know about you, but doing that paperwork shite is enough to exhaust me.”“It is,” Harry nodded then gave a blurry sigh. “It's so bloody boring is what it is.” Leaning his head back, he all but melted into the cushions and asked, “How much more do we have to do, do you know?”Looking at the mass on the coffee table in front of him, Sirius thought over what he knew then said, “I think, maybe, we're through the worst of it. We have more coming, but that shouldn't be as bad. At least it won't be the sheer volume we've been dealing with.”“Good, because that—no. I can handle a lot, no doubt there, as I faced that damned terror bird in Peru on my own, but I can't this. I'd rather face that big ugly muther again than do more paperwork like this,” Harry moaned, letting himself fall sideways to where he was resting against Sirius.Snickering at that, remembering the aftermath of that bird attacking the house they were in while he was gone, Sirius told him, “My nerves couldn't handle another bit like that. You were not even fifteen yet. Coming back to that—blimey! No, Harry! I get the sentiment, though, that's for damned sure. I'm resisting the impulse to scream and set things on fire when this shite comes in.”“They would just send double the amount if you set it on fire. I'm sure of that. Just for revenge or something,” Harry groused, shutting his eyes. “It would trigger something and whatever automated bull that sends this would pitch a fit, get mad then send more.”“Probably,” Sirius agreed, slipping an arm around Harry and holding him close. “Don't want to chance that, so I'll deal accordingly.” Leaning his head against Harry's he told his godson, though it was to reassure himself as well, “We'll get through this, press on then get the hell out as fast as we can. Then we'll go back to having fun. Maybe an extended stay in the States before we head to Greece. That or going to Italy. That's been fun the few times we went. That and the food is damned good. We can't stay long for that reason, though. Both of us felt like we were going to end up weighing a ton if we stayed.”“True,” Harry grinned. “I'd like to go to Venice for a while,” he admitted. “We only stayed a couple days last time. I'd like to go for about a week as we didn't get to see nearly everything.”“We can do that,” Sirius nodded. “And I agree there. Yes, we need to do that I think. Maybe some day trips while we're here if we don't have anything pressing. Amsterdam was fun and I want to go back. The same with Berlin. Those aren't far. We'll just avoid the countries we know are having issues with that evil arse. If we do that we'll be fine.” Looking down at Harry, he added, “And I want to go see Buckbeak a couple times.”Smiling at that, Harry nodded, “So do I.” Every time they were in Europe, they stopped to see the hippogriff. Though he seemed very happy where he was, he always came to greet them, making noises that told you he not only remembered them, but was glad to see them. That made both of them feel good and shored up the hard choice to leave him behind.“We'll manage, Harry,” Sirius told him softly, giving him a squeeze. “We've been through a lot worse than this. That first year after we left was about as bad as it could get with so much. We had to not only watch over our shoulder, but were tossed into a place where we didn't speak the language, knew no one, had to do plenty, dealing with culture shock, all of it. This we know and understand, which means we won't have as hard of a time as we did then. We're free and no one can do shite about that.”“True,” Harry admitted with a sigh. “We'll get through it.” He added, both for himself and Sirius.Giving Harry a squeeze, Sirius said, “What do you say we take a nap. That time difference is still wearing on both of us and that can't be helping with this shite. After that we'll find something to do. The car we got is in the garage here. We can take that out for a spin or just drive into town to see what's around. That should prove interesting, don't you think?”“With us in a car? Of course,” Harry snickered, shaking his head. Both of them knew how to drive because of they places they had lived. Plus, it was something they had fun with as other countries didn't have the same restrictions on modifying Muggle vehicles for Magical purposes. It was something they both liked doing, though they tended to do strange things and liked to speed. That always caused some kind of issues with them. It was fun, though, and they adored doing it. All it meant was they had to keep impulses under control, nothing more, or they would end up drawing attention to themselves in ways they didn't want.“We'll have to remind ourselves to control ourselves,” Sirius grinned, shaking his head. Kissing Harry on the side of the head, he nudged his godson to get him to move. Once Harry shifted around and stood, Sirius made it to his feet with a groan. Hand on Harry's back, he guided them towards the bedroom, yawning as he did.
Sitting on the windowsill in their bedroom about midnight, Harry looked off at the forest that surrounded them. Though it was dark, only the moonlight illuminating what he could see as they were far away from the Muggle lights, he liked the view. It was like other places they had lived in that it was peaceful, quiet and you could hear all the night creatures as they went about their normal business. Smiling slightly, he sipped his butterbeer. This was one thing he missed. As far as he was concerned, this was home. Up until Sirius took him away, he didn't feel like he had a home. Hogwarts was the closest, but he learned differently after he left with Sirius.
Home was wherever he was with Sirius, no matter what part of the globe that was. Though this place held a special place in his heart. It was here that he found out what love was the first time and actually felt it. It was here they always came back to, even if only for a few days. It was here that held some wonderful memories he would always cherish, like those days after he left with Sirius. And it was here that they were safest. They were keeping it for those reasons, and probably more, as he was sure Sirius felt the same way about it.Downing more of the butterbeer, smiling at the taste as this was something they could only get here in the UK, he gave a contented sigh. His body clock was still adjusting to the new time and he was having problems sleeping, despite the fact that he was exhausted. Sirius, probably because he was older, was doing a tad better with that and was out cold, beyond tired. Well—maybe how tired he was helped Sirius more than it did him. Maybe other bits as well.Looking down, listening to the music of the forest at night, he sighed. Sirius was concerned about all this, of course, something he could tell, but he was more so. He knew just what was going on here. Both of them made sure to keep up on that, so he knew the danger, for both of them. Sirius—he was worried about him more than himself. Honestly? He knew the danger he was in and what people might do to get him into the position they wanted. That wasn't something he was worried about because that little boy was long gone and he sure as hell wasn't going to play that game with any of them. What he was worried about was Sirius and what they might try with him to force him into that issue. Not to mention the other side targeting his husband to force him into a confrontation. That he didn't like, not the least little bit. And he was damned sure that he wasn't that far off the mark, with either side of this mess and what they would pull.Sirius could easily defend himself. That was self proving with so much, from his time in Azkaban to them and all they dealt with for so long. He was sure what might come would end up worse than anything either of them had ever faced. Over the years, though they had been around places that were in a state of conflict to varying degrees, this was more personal and they were right smack in the middle of it, like it or not. Unlike times past, they weren't bystanders that could walk away, either. They were the ones that both sides wanted pulled right into it, for different reasons. And both sides would probably not stop at much to get what they wanted. That both of them had to stay wary of. He was also damned sure that they would pull out everything they could think of, including using Sirius to force him into the role they wanted. He was worried about that when it came to the Dumbledore side of this mess. The man wasn't above emotional blackmail and coercion to get what he wanted. Sirius was the one thing in this world that someone could use to get what they wanted. While no one would know that right now, it would probably come to light very soon then he was sure Sirius would be a bigger target than he already was. He hated that but saw no way around it other than what they were doing.Shaking his head, he realized that they were probably going to have to face more than that. The fact that he was married to his godfather would leave plenty aghast and cause problems of varying kinds. Then there was the general prejudice against gays or bisexuals. As backwards as the UK was on plenty of things, that would factor in once the relationship became known. They'd dealt with it in various places, of course, but he still hated it.Finishing his butterbeer and vanishing the bottle, he then stood with a groan. Stretching, he dropped his robe, leaving himself completely naked and crawled back in bed with his husband. Curling up to Sirius, feeling his husband drape an arm around him and pull him close, though not waking, he smiled and snuggled into that familiar warmth. Shutting his eyes, he tried not to focus on this mess and just sleep, but couldn't manage. Even after he fell asleep it haunted his dreams with the green light of the Killing Curse seeming to shade them even more. The dreams and memories melding into one nightmarish theater, he pressed tightly to the one constant in his life and dealt with it through the restless night.
