Chapter 5
Looking over Harry’s shoulder at the parchments he was holding, Eddie asked, “So, Harry, what exactly are we tackling? Severus and Sirius made it quite clear they wish me to stick close to you as you attend to this as they are taking care of matters elsewhere.” He didn’t expect anything overly stressful, of course, as none of them knew each other well yet, but was most curious.
“I'm supposed to start down here and go from room to room so I can document what pests are where. And I’m supposed to keep a running list of what repairs need taken care of, if they are really bad,” Harry explained, glancing at Eddie. “They taught me a spell that will give a running list of what pests are in the room and their ‘level’ of nastiness. Anything listed at seven or over and I’m supposed to go get them to take care of it right away.”Peering at the map of the house Harry had out, Eddie nodded. “That sounds like a methodical way to go about this, yes.” Curious as he looked at about four rooms with bright red X’s through them, he asked about that.Sighing, Harry told him, “I’m not supposed to go into those or the basement. We found something they’re going to handle once they get a couple of other things done in those. As whatever pest there is in them are things I’ve not encountered before, I need to stay away.”“Yes, that’s wise,” Eddie agreed with a nod. “Right. Let’s get on this, shall we? We have many rooms to cover.” Beckoning Harry to follow, he led the way to the back of the house on the same floor and explained, “Let’s do this the right way and work our way towards the stairs. I assume we don’t have to tend to the three rooms that the elves are taking care of?”“We’re good there,” Harry told him, trailing along, still consulting the sheets. “Severus has most of those taken care of. The elves are handling what might be in the sewage system since I encountered one of those critters this morning. Not something I want to do again!” He chuckled, grinning a tad. While they moved, he was keeping a wary eye on anything that might pop out at him. From what they saw before lunch, there were plenty of nasty things in this house that he had to stay alert for. Not to mention what he had learned about from helping to clean Grimmauld Place.Leading Harry to the most logical place to start, Eddie waited for him to begin with the spells he was running and the notes, then began the most basic of prodding when it came to questions. “I take it the three of you are here to get away from the strife going on? We don’t hear much, of course, but know it’ll soon be all out war with that maniac being back.”“That’s part of it,” Harry told him distractedly, making sure the quill was working as it should while he took note of something under the windows that probably needed repaired quickly. “Well, it’s a big part of it, but not all.” As he was used to keeping his trap shut about so much because of what all he had to keep hidden over the last few years, he didn’t go any further than that.“Our kind has yet to learn, like the Muggles, to help avoid such nightmares,” Eddie told him with a sad shake of his head as Harry finished the room and they moved on to the next one. “One day, perhaps.”“No one seems to learn from anything if you ask me,” Harry admitted, thinking about Fudge and all the hell so many went through when it came to him then what Sirius had suffered. Shrugging, he said, “Not from being around for the first war with this particular evil git, but from what I’ve seen since we knew he was back.”“'Tis the way it’s always been with so many,” Eddie sighed, making sure to stay alert for anything that might be harmful. “At least you're safe here and with your guardians.” That was a fishing expedition, honestly, as he didn’t think the two other men in the house were Harry’s guardians from what he observed.“They aren’t my guardians,” Harry snickered as he moved to the next room. “Though they are good at acting like it, especially Severus.”“Please tell me you’re not a runaway, Harry! Your parents—I can’t imagine how frantic they would be to find you gone!” Eddie said, eyes overly wide. If Harry was, the wards wouldn’t like that and then wouldn’t be as effective as they should be when it came to protecting the three. Especially if there was evil intent behind him being with the other two.“Not from my family, no,” Harry grinned. “From the war, a barmy, meddlesome Headmaster, an inept Ministry, an evil git and plenty of other bits, yes.” Looking at Eddie, he told him, “My parents are dead. They were killed in the last war. I spent most of my life with my aunt and uncle, Sirius is my godfather, though plenty made sure he couldn’t fulfill that role in my life.” Sighing, he shook his head, not wanting to get into that bit as it rankled plenty.Relieved at that, Eddie told him, sadly, “The cost of war is never pretty, especially for the youngest and most innocent.” However, he thought about Harry’s tone as he spoke of his relatives then asked, cautiously, “Your aunt and uncle—they won’t be looking for you, will they?”“Uh—no,” Harry chuckled, grinning. “Probably plenty glad to be shut of me, actually. It’s very doubtful they’ll ever think of me again. Nothing to worry about there.”Though not liking the sound of that, as such things so rankled, Eddie shook his head. “Well, at least you’re with two that care.” He observed, filing all that was said away for later. Though the ladies in the house would love that. They doted on children that came in anyway. To have an orphan that didn’t have a good childhood would make them step that up. Not a bad thing. This was also at least a foundation for getting information, something that would help. Observing as Harry worked, he asked, “What are Severus and Sirius up to anyway? It sounded like they would be busy with something or other while you did this.”“They’re working on the master bedroom then making sure the path from it down to the areas we do have at least mostly done and safe is clear,” Harry explained and pressed on to the next room and what appeared to be the main hallway leading to the front of the house. “They’re getting rid of pests and repairing what they need to then going to ward up anything they don’t get to so we have more room. Being in the three rooms we have mostly done would drive us all mental after a couple of days.”“I can see where it would, yes,” Eddie chuckled, shaking his head. “Elves are good, of course, but this house is in a severe state of disrepair after being empty for so long, sadly. So, it may take them some time.”“That’s fine, we’ve got all of that in the world,” Harry told him with a grin. “And it's going to look magnificent when done!” Moving along, he asked, “About outside—how much room do we have and how bad is it? We saw it’s overgrown, of course, but not much else as it was so late when we came in. Severus has seen the garage, as he bought the place then got us a Muggle car and had the elves make a place for our hippogriff. It’s something we’re supposed to go out and check on in the next couple days when we’re sure we have the worst of the pest problem taken care of.”Pleased about Harry’s optimism over the house, something it would adore then aid in it moving things along, Eddie gave a smile. Chuckling, he asked, “You really brought a hippogriff along with you?”“We did,” Harry grinned, pressing on. “Sirius and I rode him here, in fact. He’s great! Severus flew alongside on my broom.”“Most interesting mode of transportation,” Eddie told him, chuckling. Sobering up, he sighed, “While there is plenty of room outside with some outbuildings, it’s in bad shape, probably worse than the house, but it’ll look wonderful when you’re done. There are statues, fountains, a croquet field and even a maze. You’ll love it and there’ll be plenty to keep all of you occupied. However, I wouldn’t venture out alone for now, Harry. There are bound to be plenty of nasty pests lurking here and there. No, this is a task all of you need to stay together to tend to.”“We will, no problem there,” Harry told him, making a note of that on the sheet. Grinning, he asked, “Is there a Quidditch pitch?”Chortling, Eddie told him, as he trailed along behind, “No, not a full one. But there is a start! One of the last families to live here took the first steps in creating one. I believe the hoops are still stored in one of the outbuildings. It shouldn’t take much to finish it, if you don’t want the full stadium of seats they were planning anyway.”“Don’t need those, obviously, but the rest should be great! Sirius and I will love that. Severus might as well, we’ll see,” Harry told him, happy with that. Which meant he would see about going outside tomorrow to see what was there. If it was how Eddie said, they would have plenty to do to keep themselves occupied.Moving along, Harry was happy with how this was going. It was working well, the spell was giving him everything they needed and he hadn’t encountered anything too nasty. Good. If it kept up, it would only take an hour or so to get through most of this then he could go help Sirius and Severus.
Jumping, startled when a voice called his name, Sirius’ head whipped in that direction as he was helping Severus tend to a couple nasty pests. Seeing Eddie hovering there and Severus turn as well, he asked, tone highly wary as Harry wasn’t with him, “Is there a problem?” Harry had checked in a couple of times, as they had asked him to, so they knew he was now working up on the third floor.
“Yes, sorry to disturb. Harry’s encountered something he said to tell you was a level nine pest. From what I’m to understand, that’s one you want tended to right away,” Eddie told him, looking between the two concerned faces.” Holding up a hand, he assured them, “Harry is quite fine, nothing to worry about. He got the reading, saw the level and I shooed him along to a safe place where no harm will come to him.”As there were only a small handful of pests that could be in this house of that level, and none of them nice, Severus was on edge. “Lead the way if you would, please. We’ll get Harry along the way so he can stick with us.” He didn’t want the youngest of them alone anywhere if they could at all help it until they were sure the whole place was decontaminated.Motioning the two to follow, Eddie floated ahead of them then reassured the two, “Harry is perfectly safe, you have my word. I shooed him up to the top floor. He’s in one of the small parlors across from the ballroom that is quite safe.” Before either of the two could say anything, he smiled then explained further, “One of the other ghosts in the house is sitting with him. Rest assured that he’s most safe with her. She’s quite fond of youngsters and is determined to help keep them protected to the best of her ability. There’s no need to fret, my good men. Tend to the pest and she’ll keep watch over your young man.”Motioning Eddie to lead the way, Sirius then trailed after him, wand out. Grinning, though concerned, he said, “We get to meet another ghost! This is good.”“She’s the one that doesn’t like to reveal herself most times, but she’s ever so fond of children, so she’s taken a shine to your Harry. Nothing at all to fear, Red is a formidable force to reckon with, even as a ghost. After all, she had to be in life, so it carried over into death as well,” Eddie chuckled, floating along.Smirking at that, Severus nodded. “As long as he’s safe, we’re fine. I’d rather not have him around if we have to take care of a pest this nasty, as he has no foundation for what to do with something this bad.”“He is,” Eddie assured them once more, floating up to the third floor. “The other ghosts are also keeping watch for problems. If something comes up, they’ll let me know so you can go get him out of there or take care of it.” Snorting, he added, a chuckle in his voice, “I should warn you that he’s pick up a pet along the way.”Grinning, though apprehensive about what they might be about to face, Sirius asked, “Should we be worried?” Harry had enough common sense that he wasn’t about to pick up anything that was dangerous, but he wanted to make sure.“Nothing at all to worry about,” Eddie chortled, still amused. “He found a lone Puffskein in one of the rooms. So, he decided to keep it. It is rather cute as it’s quite fat from food sources and is a rather odd color as well, a dark blue. Probably from what it’s been feeding off of; doxy eggs. They do seem to think of them as a delicacy.”“Nothing we take issue with,” Severus said, relieved. A Puffskein they could easily deal with. If Harry wanted one, they wouldn’t object to it. Hell, he was sure if there was one around, they would find others. Harry was more than welcome to keep them as well. “Now, do you know what we’re facing or just the level reading?”“Very sorry, but no. We saw the reading and I was more concerned with shooing Harry away before whatever it was took it in its head to attempt something. I thought that best,” Eddie told him, floating down the hall to the room the creature was in.“The right way to go about it, that’s for damned sure,” Sirius said, already conjuring a shield around him and Severus in preparation. Waiting for Severus to get the readings so they knew what they were tackling, he kept a wary eye out. They’d manage with whatever it was, but one needed to stay alert with anything that read as that dangerous.
Coming into the parlor Harry was ensconced in, Severus was relieved to see him there, drinking tea, petting a fur ball the size of a Bludger and talking to a ghost that was dressed in finery from many centuries past. Good. Harry was safe. That’s all that mattered. “All is well, Harry?” He asked after giving a respectful nod of the head to the ghost who was eying him and Sirius warily. She looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn’t place where he had seen her.
“We’re good,” Harry grinned, petting the Puffskein he had named Grover. He had a great time talking to Red, as she insisted she was to be called. Oh, he knew who this was, though her unbound hair had thrown him at first, and was just stunned as he had spent the time talking with one of the better known Queen’s of England. He liked it, though! She was quite nice, sending for tea for him and making sure the elf had brought along snacks so he could eat.“And that is the biggest Puffskein I have ever seen in my life!” Sirius laughed, walking over and petting the creature, liking the noise it made as it obviously adoring the feeling of being touched. Reaching up and ruffling Harry’s hair, he said, “He’ll be a good pet for you. We don’t mind you keeping him.”“I didn’t think so,” Harry told him with a chuckle. “He was just kinda’ sitting in the middle of the floor in one of the rooms I checked. I couldn’t resist.”Walking over and gazing at the oversized behemoth of a Puffskein, Severus snorted, “He’s not wanted for food, that’s for certain.” Looking back at the ghost who was still gauging them, if he read her look right, he then said, keeping a respectful tone as this was obviously a lady from the higher end of the social ladder, “Our thanks for keeping watch over Harry.”“My pleasure,” Red told him with a small smile and bow of her head. “If you would, Harry, introductions are in order.”Quickly, Harry introduced everyone, making sure to use the name Red for Queen Catherine, as she had insisted when she introduced herself. Looking between Severus and Sirius, he asked, “It went fine, didn’t it? No problems?”“Oh, there were problems,” Sirius said, conjuring a chair and taking a seat with a groan. “Nothing to worry about, though. It wasn’t a match for me and Severus. Just took us time to get rid of the thing. We finally managed to exterminate it.” The Black Annis was a nasty type of doxy that was horrific to deal with as the normal extermination methods didn’t work. And there was only one antidote for its venom and it was seriously hard to come by. Normally, they had to be taken care of by the Ministry.“Good, I was a tad worried,” Harry said with a sigh of relief.Conjuring a chair for himself, Severus took a seat with a sigh of relief. “You did the right thing in how you went about this. We’re pleased with that. I think, if Red would agree,” he started, giving the lady a nod, “that we go about it this way until we’re sure we’ve got the worst out of the house.”“I’d be glad to sit with Harry until you’re sure it’s safe,” Red told him with a bigger smile, pleased that the men were concerned for young Harry’s safety. “Just have him call for me, or do it yourself, and we’ll find plenty to keep ourselves occupied while you tend to the matter. He’ll stay safe with me, you have my word.”After sending an elf for a refill and extra cups so they could take a break, Sirius gave her a nod. “Thanks, we’ll do that then. Good way to go about it.” Looking at Eddie, who was hovering there, he added, “And thanks to you as well, Eddie. That was the perfect way to deal with this.”“My pleasure as well, Sirius,” Eddie told him honestly.Taking a cup of tea and a biscuit when one the elves brought them, Severus asked Harry, “How much more did you have left?”“Only two rooms down on the third then up here. Nothing that will take me long,” Harry told him. “We’ve got like a massive list of pests, though, and plenty that looks like it needs taken care of.” Grinning, he said, “And we’ve got to go take a look outsize! Eddie was telling me they have the start of a Quidditch pitch out there. Not to mention a maze and croquet court. That should be great.”Snorting at that, trying not to roll his eyes, Severus told him, sounding completely amused, “We’ll see what we can do to get out there tomorrow and take a gander around. It comes last, though. We have too much in here to take care of to worry about a Quidditch pitch.” That he added for Black as well since he knew Sirius was as bad as Harry with that. Holding out his hand for the list Harry had so far, wanting to see what was there, he said, taking it then starting to look it over, “Once we get done with this break, you can go back to it and we’ll get back to work as well. We have the bedroom almost done then will start on the hallway. If you get done before us, come down and give us a hand as I don’t think there is anything there we need to worry too much about. The warding I do want you to give us a hand with.”Reading what was there over Severus’ shoulder, Sirius gave a sigh. There was plenty to take care of and it was going to take time. Grinning as he looked at it, he added, “And if we find anymore Puffskeins, you can keep them. That should be fun for you.”Petting Grover, Harry chuckled, “I’d like that. He’s pretty neat.”
Watching the trio leave after bidding her goodbye, Red stood and smoothed down her dress. Folding her hands in front of her, she told Eddie, who was about to follow, “I do like them. They seem very nice. Yes, the house, and all of us, will enjoy having them here.”
Smiling at that, Eddie told her, “If you please—let the others know. They are still wary. Your word will go a long ways. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go with Harry.”“Keep a close watch on him, Eddie,” Red told him then, with a nod of her head, she vanished through the wall, going to talk to the others.Floating off faster than normal, Eddie went to catch up, pleased with what had happened. A wonderful way to start the relationships in the house!
Stopping Severus and Sirius when they got to the landing on the third floor, Harry grinned then asked, looking between the two, “Do you know who Red is?” He thought Severus might, but wasn’t sure about Sirius.
“She looked quite familiar, but I couldn’t place her.” Severus admitted, now intrigued.“That’s because she’s not wearing one of those weird hat things they used to,” Harry chuckled. “That threw me, too.” Grinning bigger he said, “She’s Catherine of Aragon*!”Eyes going wide, Severus took that in. Seeing Black’s confusion, he quickly explained about her history then asked Harry, “Are you sure?”“Yes!” Harry grinned, nodding vigorously. “We were talking about Henry and what was true about so much. It was fascinating.”“All right, if this isn’t a good sign for us, I don’t know what is,” Sirius grinned. “We have a former Queen of England watching over us!”“It is,” Severus told him, looking smug. “And I’m sure we’ll have some fascinating conversations with her.” The nickname was already clicking as she was known to have beautiful red hair in life, so it might be the truth. If it was, he wanted to talk with her about history, that's for sure. Now he was curious about the other ghosts Eddie had mentioned. However, there was work to do. So, they waited until Eddie joined them then set to it once more. After all, there was a ton of work to tend to, so they needed to press on.
*Catherine of Aragon was, indeed, a real person. She was the first wife of King Henry VIII of England. In this fic, I’m using some historical figures in various places. As they are historical, with the ‘youngest’ of them having been dead over a hundred years, what’s factual, myth, legend and just flat out inaccurate (something that will be quite obvious when it comes to one yet to be introduced) is hard to sort through. So, I’m taking bits and pieces I like and running with it to create their personalities. That and to have a bit of fun with legends that still abound when it comes to certain bits. Take it as that and nothing more.
