Chapter 5
The night after Harry was let out of school for the summer, Sirius was lying in bed with his sleeping godson. Since it was fairly warm, Harry was sprawled out on his stomach in nothing but his boxers. Curled up to his side, Sirius was running a hand up and down his bare back as he watched Harry sleep. Even in his sleep, Harry would feel this and it would give him comfort, though there really wasn't much bothering his godson. They both liked it, so it was something he would continue to do.
Thankfully, he now felt more 'real' to Harry. It wasn't perfect and it would still progress, but it was better. He was now warm to the touch, though muted, not like a human, and he had a more distinct form when he wanted. Of course, it had a darkish, almost black tinge to it, but he was more defined. He could also do plenty more than he used to. While Harry grew and his magic developed, it would get better then he could act almost like a human. As it was, he could now pick up and move objects like a human would, though it took some effort. That was perfect. He could also become a very light shadow, something almost not there and most wouldn't see, to tend to tasks. Even better. This would progress until he had an almost human body. That darkness in Harry helped feed it and make it easier. That darkness—he still didn't know what it was, but was grateful it was there. From what he could tell, it had stopped shrinking and was holding steady at the size it was, about half of what it started out as, though he could still 'feed' off of it as he needed to. It was powerful as well, probably on equal levels with Harry's own magic, which helped even more. Between the two, he was progressing at a rate faster than he had planned. Because that was something that helped the both of them, he wasn't going to grouse. At some point, he was going to have to figure out what it was and how it might affect the two of them, but not now. From all he could see, it didn't affect Harry at all and the only area it did for him was feeding what he needed. So, it was something he wasn't going to worry about too much. After pulling his gaze from the soundly sleeping Harry, Sirius stared out the window. There was a lot to do this year. It was Harry's term in the Muggle school system. He would be off to Hogwarts next year, finally. Petunia was already fussing about it, worrying about him, though planning for what needed done. If he read the signs right, she was mildly panicked at being alone for so long while Harry was at Hogwarts. Honestly? Harry needed to get away from that damned woman until she went into therapy and started working on her 'issues', as the Muggles on the telly called them. She was—the obsession with Harry, fixing her past choices, what she had done, all of it, were areas that were growing worse. He had the same suspicion that Harry voiced a few times; that she was trying to turn him into Dudley. That wasn't at all healthy. The same with so much else she did. Even Harry had noticed and didn't like being around her. From what he saw, his godson avoided her most of the time. He could sure as hell understand that! As it was growing worse, getting Harry away for long stretches of time was for the best. Maybe she would pull herself together and focus elsewhere, on something healthy. At least he hoped so. If not, he'd find a way to protect Harry until he could get out legally, because that would just get worse if she didn't get some kind of damned help!Harry didn't like her, that he had said plainly, so what she was trying was failing. She didn't see it and just kept pressing on, getting more overt about plenty, bragging about Harry's accomplishments, trying to hover, cling, being overly worried about what he was doing, pushing him into activities he didn't want and plenty of other bits. He didn't like it, at all. Thankfully, Harry had enough backbone to tell her no and make it clear in other ways that he wasn't interested. Sirius was pleased with him for doing so, that's for damned sure. Harry also avoided her as much as he could, especially when she was in an overly clingy mood. Yes, away was needed, though he feared it might grow worse when he was gone and she would be harder to take when Harry came home for the hols or vacation. That he would wait and see on then deal with accordingly. This year was critical for so much. It was time that he had to start really explaining plenty. And to warn Harry what to keep watch for, who to stay away from and plenty of other bits. It was going to take time. Since Harry trusted him and knew he wouldn't lie, he could manage. He just didn't want to drop it on him all at once. No, he had to feed it to him over the next year so that Harry could process it then prepare. He had parts, but it was now time to get into the whole mess. Over the last couple of years he had vanished a few times while Harry was sleeping to go catch up on what was happening in the Wizarding World, information he knew both of them needed. As expected, some, such as Albus, didn't think Voldemort was gone. Oh, he didn't go near the old man because he didn't want to chance him becoming suspicious about anything, but he had others close to him. That's where he picked up on some of it. What he found out told him it was time for Harry to learn everything, not just the bits Petunia knew or what he had talked about so far. None of it would be easy to explain either, but he would manage. Then came other areas, like Remus. Thinking about his old friend, he gave a feral grin. Oh, his plan was going perfectly. Remus was utterly terrified each time he showed up. While he made damned sure there was no set pattern to when he made an appearance, he did it enough that Remus knew his displeasure over the werewolf being a coward and a sheep. Every time he did, he growled plenty, leveled real accusations then refuted everything Remus had to stay, such as Albus swearing this was for the best. He pointed out, repeatedly, that Remus had no way of knowing because he hadn't made a move to find out for himself, just taking Albus' word for it. The same with not doing anything to find Peter and plenty of other bits.Really, he hadn't expected Remus to make any move to step up and do what James and Lily wanted. He was too much of a self-pitying sheep to think for himself on such matters. That was fine. He would keep right on doing what he was. The same with the other bits. He'd managed to spell some ghostly ravens and crows to show up around Remus' cottage at odd times to caw in their haunting way. All in the Wizarding World knew such animals were thought to be harbingers of doom or death. Let them haunt him when he couldn't. It would keep up the pattern, letting Remus know he was well and truly pissed over this. He had let Harry suffer for all those years because he hadn't done what was right, so it was time he paid.Eyes drifting back down to the sleeping Harry, Sirius smiled then reached out to stroke his godson's bare skin. While life was going to get more complicated and dangerous, he was up to the task. All he had to do was ensure that Harry stayed safe. His godson would grow and have fun, just like he should. He would worry about the other parts, not Harry. All he had to do was make damned sure Harry knew what to watch out for. Nothing more than that. Kissing Harry on his bare shoulder, he let his hand drift up and down his bare back. Yes, it was time to start laying the foundation for what they both needed so that Harry didn't get caught in the middle of the nightmare he knew was coming.
The year's time from the end of his first school year in London to the end of the next term was one of the least stressful stretches of time that Harry could ever remember. Before Sirius came, it was stressful for plenty of reasons. After—that was obvious. This year was calm, something he adored as it gave him time to settle down, get used to London, school and all the other areas that came from such upheavals.
At the start of his summer break there had been some stress with Aunt Petunia being all protective, not wanting him to leave the house unless it was to go to one of the programs he had signed up for and other such nonsense. It had taken a couple weeks and some negotiations with her for it to work out the way he desired. He did attend the library's summer programs, something he wanted, and with the local youth organization. Both were safe, obviously. Because Aunt Petunia worked, she couldn't take him. The youth organization picked him up in a van on the days they had activities. Aunt Petunia liked that, of course. As the library was only a couple blocks away, he walked there. The compromise came in the form of a program by the same youth organization that ran the summer program. For the whole month of June, he attended what they called a 'newcomers' group once a week. It not only showed them how to use the bus system, but had programs to assist in staying safe, what to watch out for and similar areas. By the time he finished it, he knew how to use the complex bus system, where to go, how to stay safe, all the areas Aunt Petunia was worried about. After he completed the program, he was allowed to roam how he wanted in the small area he lived in. It wasn’t more than about five blocks in each direction, but it was safe. As it had plenty to keep him occupied, he was fine. Plus, it stopped the over the top fussing and worrying from Aunt Petunia. The less of that he had to deal with, the better off he was going to be.As time went on, he sorely missed the days when she ignored him. Her habit of clinging, trying to make up for all she'd done and other bits he found highly annoying, not to mention disgusting. As he told Sirius, he didn't like her and this show wasn't helping. While Dudley hadn't minded, using what she pulled to his own advantage for so much, he wanted no part of it. Sirius understood what he meant and said it was fine. While the summer pressed on, Harry mingled a bit with some he met in school and others in the programs he belonged to. It was nice to talk to some his own age who didn't have the history he dealt with in Little Whinging. He wasn't getting close, though. The first reason was that he would rather just talk to Sirius than others. Most of them—well, he wasn't much interested in bits they liked, such as footy, computer games and similar areas most their age were into. He was mildly interested, but not enthused like they were. Then there was the fact that after the next year he wasn't going to school with them anymore. No point in getting tight if he was just going to vanish for most the year. While Sirius encouraged him to have fun and talk with people, he didn't push him into finding 'besties'. Sirius was pleased with him getting friendly with people his own age since he hadn't had much positive interaction over the years. After all, Sirius told him that he would find friends, good ones, once he was at Hogwarts. Though Harry smiled at that and would give it a chance, he didn't think so. Sirius was all he needed and wanted for a friend. He doubted there was anyone that could measure up to him.Once Aunt Petunia stopped acting like he needed to be on a short leash so nothing could happen to him, Harry started roaming around the neighborhood he lived in. Of course, to hold off problems with his aunt, he stayed safe and didn't go any further than they agreed on. He adored it here, more than he ever had in Little Whinging. There was so much more to do, not to mention the library was bigger. It left him with plenty to keep from getting bored. Since the movie theater was so close, he got to see one each week. Even after Sirius had come, he didn't get to go to movies. So, it was something he loved and enjoyed more than most people, probably. That summer was intense in some ways, slightly stressful because of it. No, it wasn't problems with other people, more like some of what Sirius began talking to him about. He knew the basics of how his parents had died from Sirius and his aunt. Sirius knew more, of course, and told him about it. Then he began discussing what happened afterwards. While he knew by now Sirius was his godfather, Harry had been blindsided that Sirius had been thrown into prison for his parents murder without a trial. Oh, there was no doubt that he believed Sirius when he was told he didn't do it. He was also quite upset that the person that did betray his parents got away, with people thinking he had died. Sirius made it clear that if he had any questions about his parents' deaths, he was to ask. And he had, plenty. As promised, Sirius explained it all. When Sirius was done, Harry was plenty upset with everything that had gone on. On the upside, though, he saw Padfoot for the first time! He adored seeing the big dog and hearing about being an Animagus. It wasn't something he knew was possible and becoming one was now a goal of his. After going through that mess, Sirius began talking about who to avoid, stay cautious of and other areas. Harry was irate about Remus. As expected, he hadn't heard of the man before Sirius mentioned him, but was furious that someone who had promised his parents he would take him would let someone dictate what he could do. As he told Sirius, he didn't have money growing up and wore Dudley's castoffs, so the fact that Remus had no money wouldn't have mattered to him. Sirius agreed, of course. He then warned that Remus may show up at some point and Harry was to stay away from him. Oh, Harry planned to do just that. Sooner or later, he wanted to give him a piece of his mind, too! Just not right off as it would look odd that he knew so much about what had gone on.Those parts were the worst of it, of course, and something that had made Harry quite mad. There wasn't anything he could about it, though. At least not yet. Sirius told him to give it time and it would all work itself out in the end, so that's what he would do. The rest was more Sirius giving him a crash course in plenty that had gone on, what still was, from what he managed to find out, and who to worry about. Since it was information Harry needed to keep himself safe, he made sure that he understood and asked questions when he didn't. Sirius gave him all he needed to know on it, at least with the current information he had. Once at Hogwarts, he would let Sirius guide him like he always had and handle what he could. It was for the best and he knew it.Over the school year, Sirius gave him a crash course about the Wizarding World, how it worked, the so-called 'classes' and all the other topics he needed to know to understand the world he would enter the following school year. Just to make it fun, he also talked about the food, joke charms, Quidditch, brooms, the houses and plenty of other areas. Some of it he couldn't wait to see or try, others sounded hilarious. While he loved hearing about all if it, even the bad, because it made him feel like he was part of something very special already, the downside to learning all about what would come the following year made the last year he would attend Muggle schools seem to drag on. He wanted to go to Hogwarts, not slug away with subjects that couldn't hold a candle to Transfiguration and Charms in his mind. He did, though, keeping his grades up. Each quarterly review had him in the top five of his class, something that not only pleased Sirius, but with him saying he was proud of him. Though his aunt told him the same thing, it didn't feel the same. Sirius being proud of him felt much better than hearing it from his aunt ever would. His birthday and Christmas that year had actually gone beyond what it had the one before. His aunt, because she was making very good money, had gone overboard. When she asked what he wanted, he had mentioned a couple new books and some movies he wanted for home, then had suggested going to another play. That was all. What he got was a mountain of presents for both, beyond what Dudley had ever received. His birthday brought a new laptop computer, something he knew cost a fortune, a TV and VCR for his room along with all kinds of other bits. Christmas had him getting so many presents that you actually couldn't see the tree when he came down in the morning. It seemed that if it was new and popular, his aunt had bought it. His room was actually full of all kinds of bits now and he had to be creative in how to arrange everything so parts didn't topple over because of the amount in it. What all the show of materialism didn't do for him, though, was change how he felt about his aunt.To him, it seemed she realized that what she was doing wasn't working, so she was going all out to buy his affection and prove whatever to him. While she wasn't clinging as much, you could tell by the look in her eyes she wanted to. Then there was her going overboard in trying to get involved with activities at school. That left him cold and wasn't working. Even worse were some other bits she pulled made him slightly angry. Like bragging about him and all he had done, how good he was at school, his grades, all of it. Those—they made him mad, something he told Sirius, as she hadn't bothered until Dudley died. By the time spring rolled around and the end of term was looming, he couldn't wait to go to Hogwarts. While most of it was to finally see all those bits Sirius talked about, a growing part was getting away from his aunt. He had told Sirius that as well after another of her more spectacular showings of approval for a good grade card, one that not only involved tickets to a play he wanted to see, but a pair of those high-end trainers that were well over a hundred and fifty pounds a pair. Sirius had sighed about it, looking over the trainers and shaking his head. Then he agreed. Even Sirius said that he thought his aunt not only needed help, starting with grief counseling, but he needed away from her so she could get a handle on what she was dealing with. Harry wholeheartedly agreed and just couldn't wait to get away. The end of the school year had Harry's excitement growing. While his aunt did another of those expensive bits when he ended the year the third in his class, a mobile phone, he could feel the excitement mounting. It was almost time to go to Hogwarts! Most of those he went to school with he didn't know well, so he didn't bother saying goodbye to them. The majority would continue on at that school, while others would go on to other private ones. They were just going to let everyone assume that's what he was doing as well. A few wanted to keep in touch, so Harry agreed to write, but he wouldn’t be fussed if they didn't. Instead, all he could focus on was what was coming this summer and in the fall. Hogwarts awaited and he was looking forward to it!
After looking over the mobile phone Harry received from his aunt after the last grade card of the year, Sirius rolled his eyes at the expensive bit of bribery. Like some of the other electronics Harry had received, this piece of sensitive equipment was having issues with Harry's magic and not functioning as it should. On the upside, he was sure that Petunia bought it for him with a second purpose in mind; to keep track of Harry. It wasn't a bad way to assure the woman he was safe when roaming, so he wasn't going to say too much or do something to make it malfunction. If she stepped over a line, he would.
Once he came over and slipped back into bed, curling around Harry, Sirius held him close, one hand on Harry's side, stroking it softly. The time had finally come. It was the summer Harry would get his Hogwarts letter, wand and all the rest that would herald him a true Wizard then start him down the path like they all had when they turned eleven. The time for him to have to keep a closer watch on his godson was also here. He was damned sure Harry's arrival at Hogwarts would cause big issues. Fine, let it. He was more than up to the task of protecting Harry.Shutting his eyes as Harry's magic flowed into him, he thought about the upcoming summer. There was plenty they had to do, not just the parts that came with Harry taking the rites of passage the rest of them had over the years. Preparations for other areas needed to start as well. Harry would be getting the official papers that he inherited everything from him when he supposedly 'died'. It was his hope that Gringotts would be circumspect enough to have them delivered quietly. Once Harry was in possession of those, they would need to get into Grimmauld Place to start getting that damned elf working on making certain it was livable, if the creature was still alive, that was. If Petunia kept up how she was, Harry would need an escape at some point and this was perfect, especially since it wasn't that far away. Then came all kinds of other bits that would surely crop up. He needed to stay vigilant for anything that might cause issues.Without opening his eyes, he smiled. This whole scenario was going better than he planned, well, mostly. He hadn't thought it would be as easy as it had been when he conceived the idea all those years ago. The fact that it was pleased him. It meant that he hadn't had to work as hard to gain Harry's trust and convince him to let him help. While the circumstances behind Harry being so willing still made him grind his teeth, the outcome was good. It also meant that the Wizarding World might want to take heed because he was not allowing Harry to go this alone. No, he would be along with him and Merlin help anyone that messed with Harry. If they thought he was bad when he had a body, he was worse now. Because nothing, or no one, was going to hurt Harry, he didn't care their agenda. He would fulfill that promise he made so long ago and go beyond.
