AN-a large thank you goes to a writer, Voice of the Nephilim. He is a much better writer than I, he is my inspiration for Harry and Millicent becoming friends. He made me love Millicent Bulstode.

The first day of classes came extra early for Harry, he was awake and out of the dormitory before the other boys stirred. Harry was privately glad, he knew he'd have to deal with Draco at some point but he didn't want to start his very first day getting into trouble. Not over a little slime like the Malfoy boy. He got a closer look at the common room while he waited for Millicent to come out of the girls dormitory. It was actually nice, everything was dark tones except the stone walls which were dark grey. In the center was a huge fireplace, bigger then Harry had ever seen. There was a large painting over the fireplace of a robed man with long black hair, a snake entwined one of the mans arms and he held a twisted staff in the other with a large green stone set into it.
As Harry stood on his tiptoes to read the small plate hammered into the bottom left of the he could've sworn the paintings eyes moved. Ignoring the picture he read the inscription; Salazar Sytherin, Lord of Snakes. Harry stood back examining the painting once more. The mans face had changed, he had a new more... Confused expression, or maybe it was just Harry's imagination. He didn't have time to consider it any further as Millicent was the first girl to awaken and exit the girls dormitories.
"Harry, somehow I knew you'd be up. You wanna walk to breakfast together?" Millicent asked.
"Yeah Millie... Is it okay if I call you Millie?" Asked Harry.
"Oh sure," she replied as they walked out of the common room and into the hallway outside, "Mum calls me Millie, or Mills sometimes. I don't really like being called Millicent, it sounds so stuffy and proper." Millie grinned at Harry.
"I suppose it does, it's a nice enough name though, just a little long. We're some of the first up." Harry said as they entered the great hall.
"There's professor Snape, I suppose we should go get out schedules before we eat." Millie pointed towards the end of the Slytherin table where the potions master sat.
Their head house of did not look up.
"Names?" He asked.
"Potter and Bullstrode" Harry answered.
"I won't be seeing you in my class until Friday. tomorrow however, will be the first Slytherin family meeting in the common room. Six 'o clock. Tardiness is not advisable." The potions master didn't look at either of them through his speech and ignored their presence as soon as he was finished.
Feeling somewhat uncomfortable by the teachers attitude towards him Harry led Millicent to the farther end of the table away from their teacher. They sat together inspecting their schedules.
"Looks like we have Charms with Ravenclaw first, then Defense against Dark Arts with Hufflepuff then lunch and we finish the day with double Transfiguration with the Ravenclaws again." Said Millie.
" Yeah, no classes with Gryffindor until Wednesday we have Herbology with them. Want to come with me to find Ron after we eat?" Harry asked his new friend as he attacked a large bowl of porridge.
" Sure, I haven't talked to him since we were kids. His mum used to be friends with my mum." She answered.
The Great hall was beginning to fill up with people as the morning was progressing. There was only 45 minutes before class started so Harry and Millicent set off to find Ron before trying to search for their classroom. The Weasley was easy enough to find. All the brothers were sitting together. Ron grinned as they approached and started to talk but his older brother stood up and shook Harry's hand, effectively interrupting him.
"Harry Potter! I'm Percy, didn't get a chance to introduce myself yesterday. I've heard you met my younger brothers though." Percy said in a very pompous voice.
"Ah, made friends with Millie! She's always been a nice girl, did she tell you our mothers were friends?" Percy asked,
"Yes she was actually just telling me that, it's nice to meet you Percy." Harry smiled politely.
"Well, you may have noticed," Percy started sticking out his chest so the small silver 'P' was perfectly visible, "I'm a prefect, so if you have any questions or need any help around feel free to ask."
"Harry doesn't need your help Perce, as a matter of a fact I think he's trying to talk to our younger brother Ronald behind you" one of the twins said imitating their brothers pompous tone.
Percy scowled at his brother before picking up his bag and walking away.
"Sorry about Percy mate, he'll just keep talking if we don't say anything." Said George.
"Can't believe you're in Slytherin, how're the snakes treating you?" Fred asked,
"Not too bad, I mean I have to share a room with Malfoy. It could be worse. Hey Ron, we don't have a class together till Wednesday I have a free period tomorrow meet me in the library if you can. " Harry stated.
"I'll be there! I've got to get to Transfiguration now, McGonagall is strict. What's your guys first class?" Ron asked Millie and Harry,
"Charms" they replied in unison.
"Professor Flitwick is great, ask him to show his bouncing charm." Fred told Harry
"Better be off then, I'm not sure where my class is and my brothers don't care to advise me. See you later." Ron said walking away.
"Professor Flitwicks classroom is the third floor" chortled George,
"Prat" said Ron from several feet away.
"Thanks George, right?" Said Harry
"Yup I'm George, you can tell because I'm just a little better looking."
"More like a little worse looking" retorted Fred standing up.
"We're off to Potions first. We don't need Snape mad at at us already, you guys are lucky he's always nice to his own house." George said with a small wave before him and Fred walked away.
"Well, I suppose we should get to class" Harry said nervously.
He felt like he was so inexperienced compared to all the children that came from wizard families. Silently they made their way to the second floor, the steps moved as soon as they were firmly upon them leaving the pair on the fourth floor. Practically running they went down two more floors(using a different staircase) and found the classroom they were looking for. They weren't the last students to arrive so Harry and Millicent got to choose their seats, they sat at a table with Blaise and quietly waited for class to begin.
Five minutes after class was supposed to start a very short wizard walked out of a door labeled Charms Office, he stood on a stool he had at the front of the room and waited for everyone to quiet down before speaking.
"My name is Professor Flitwick, I will be teaching all of you charms until your fifth year when you'll be free to choose other elective classes. Let's start by getting acquainted. When I call out your name please say present."
When the teacher came to Harry's name he got quite excited, Harry could see the tiny man eyeballing his scar. After a seconds thought the professor continued with his roll call. Busy wondering if all the teachers would react the way Professor Flitwick Harry missed the first few words of Flitwick's lesson.
"... an easy but very important charm. Please split into pairs and practice. Remember no fancy wand work is needed simply say the charm and focus on what you're trying to create. I'll dim the lights momentarily."
"Partners?" Asked Millicent.
"Only if you heard the charm we're supposed to be doing, I was distracted and missed the first half of what the professor said." Harry admitted sheepishly.
With a derisive laugh Millie said " We're supposed to be practicing the wand lighting charm. You simply say 'lumos' with your wand in hand. Try to focus on creating a light just bright enough to see by. You go first..."
Harry pulled his wand out from inside his robe and said
"Lumos"
To his delight a light appeared at the tip of his wand. He had successfully performed his first charm! It hadn't even been complicated, maybe it wouldn't be smoking hard to fit in here. Most everyone mastered the spell on their first few tries. Only Goyle, much to Harry's amusement, couldn't get it to work.
" Okay class, very well done. If you've managed to light your wands please say 'nox' to end the charm. Impressive stuff you guys, on Thursday we'll start with summoning charms, please read the first two chapters of your book before then and write me a foot long essay about chapter in your textbooks. Goyle, please remain after class, everyone else is dismissed."
Harry and Millicent were some of the last to leave. Hoping to avoid a confrontation with Malfoy they had waited until everyone but Goyle had left. As soon as Harry opened the door he knew it would be impossible to avoid the pale haired twit. Malfoy and Crabbe were right outside waiting for the third member of their trio.
"Was that the first charm you've ever cast Potter? Pathetic how excited you were, I've known how to perform that charm since I was four. I'll bet you've never performed accidental magic either, your magic is so weak, you're practically a squib!" Draco sneered
Harry completely ignored his jabs,
"Nice of you to wait for your friend Malfoy, wouldn't want him to get lost and lock himself a cabinet." Harry sneered back.
Without waiting for a response Harry and Millicent hurried to the fourth floor just in time for Professor Quirrel's class. The only interesting part of his class was him chastising Malfoy and his two body guards for being late. Harry was disappointed, he had expected more out of a class with such an interesting name. By the time class was over Harry was starving.
" Race you to the great hall Harry" Millicent winked at him pushing ahead of everyone to be the first to leave.
Harry sled up and was the third to leave but Millicent was so much bigger then him that he didn't have a chance. When he finally reached the Slytherin table he was out of breath. Millicent had saved him a seat. She laughed at his face,
"I didn't even break a sweat, you need to get some exercise!"
"Right now, all I care about is food! " Harry said taking the seat next to her.
There were all types of sandwiches to choose from, Harry took half of a roast need sandwich and half of a turkey sandwich and began to dig in.
"The food is so good, it where does it come it?" Harry asked,
"There's about a thousand house-elves at Hogwarts, they cook and help Filch keep the castle clean. My brother Brock told me Filch barely cleans anything." Answered Millicent.
"What's a house elf?"
Millicent looked at him incredulously,
"I'm sorry I just don't know a lot about the wizarding world." Harry said looking somewhat embarrassed.
"I keep forgetting, sorry Harry, I don't mean to make you feel bad. House elves are extremely magical creatures that cater to wizards. They love cleaning and cooking, I believe their magic is tied to their servitude but I'm not sure. I had a house elf nanny growing up, her name is Froo. She's been taking care of me as long as I can remember. " Millie said fondly.

Transfiguration had been fun, definitely the most challenging class they had that day. Professor McGonagall was a very strict teacher. It she was also very intelligent and Harry couldn't help but feel fond of her. She had been quite impressed with Harry as well, he was the only one who had managed to change his match completely into a needle. She gave him fifteen points and told him that he would move onto something just a little more complex at his next class.
McGonagall had also assigned a fifteen inch paper on the seven basic principles of transfiguration which Millie and Harry were now working on in the Slytherin common room.
"It's almost like muggle school with all the memorisation and essay writing." Remarked Harry,
"What do you learn at muggle school?" Asked Millie sincerely curious.
"Well, first you learn how to count and read and then you learn arithmetic and science and history. I always liked history." Harry told her.
"My brother said that History of Magic is actually really interesting but the teacher here is a ghost that manages to make everything he says horribly boring and monotonous." Millie told Harry.
"I wonder how the history magic correlates with muggle history. Do we fight wars together without even realising it? Are muggles just completely indifferent to the going ons of the magical world, and how could they be if there's a magical war going on?"
"I suppose we'll find out," said Millie unsure of what to say, she had never thought of that.
"I'm completely exhausted Harry, let's finish these essays tomorrow during our free period." Millie requested.
"I'm tired too. Thanks Millie... Goodnight." Harry said turning away,
"Wait... Thanks for what?" Asked Millie.
"Today would've been really crummy without a friend by my side." Harry smiled at her
" I'll see you in the morning" said Harry
"Goodnight Harry!" Millie smiled back awkwardly.
