I can hear the ocean. No, that’s just the blood rushing. My vision tunnels and I sway on the bench. What just happened? Charlie was standing right in front of me and now he’s gone. Did I have a stroke? I can’t even stand up. I’m terrified and tears start slipping down my cheeks. I’m so confused. A hand gently touches my shoulder and I just sit there. I can’t react. I hear someone whisper “No, not yet. Give me a minute ok?” and someone moves around the bench and kneels in front of me.
“Gina?” I’m looking at Charlie. I sway again and he reaches out to steady me. “Gina? Oh, god. I’m so sorry.”
“Charlie?” I whisper. “I think I need to go to the hospital. Something is wrong with my vision or I’m having a stroke. I’m scared. Please, will you call an ambulance?” More tears running down my face.
“No, no you’re fine. There is nothing wrong with you. I…. it’s what I wanted to show you. Gina, please try to listen to me. This is going to sound mad to you but I need you to listen to me. “
I try to focus on his face. His kind brown eyes look very worried.
“I’m a wizard. I can do magic. Magic is real.”
I sway again and this time everything does go black.
“Gina, please wake up.”
“She’s in shock Charlie. How could you think that apparition was the way to introduce someone to magic? Move over so I can modify her memory.”
Who is talking? What are they saying? I try to open my eyes but I’m very disoriented.
“No not yet. Please, give it a little more time.” That’s Charlie, maybe he can help me. My eyes start to flutter open.
“Go Hermione, please. I’ll call you back if we need you.”
“Fine, I’ll be just over there.” Whoever Hermione is, she sounded huffy. I guess she won’t help me.
“Gina?”
“Charlie…” He lets out something that sounds like a cross between a sob and a laugh.
“Do you want to sit up? Here, let me help you.” He puts his hand under my neck and head and helps me lean forward.
“How did I end up on the ground?” I ask, looking around.
“You passed out. It’s my fault. I caught you before you hit your head. It’s my fault.”
“You’ve said that already. “
We sit there on the ground in the park. Darkness has completely settled around us. Neither of us talk for a very long time.
“Gina. Do you remember anything that happened before you passed out?”
“I think I’m going blind.”
“No, you aren’t. I told you that I’m a wizard, that I can do magic. I wanted to show you instead of telling you because I thought it would help you understand. I was very wrong and I am very sorry.”
“Wizard?”
“What’s your favorite flower?” he asked taking my right hand and laying it palm up.
“What?” I can’t follow a conversation. Magic and then flowers?
“What’s your favorite flower?” he asked again.
“Daisy. Why?”
Charlie taps a piece of wood against my palm and a daisy appears. We both look at it and then he looks at me. I slowly raise my eyes to his and meet his gaze.
“Magic.” he says simply. “I have so much to tell you, if you’ll let me.”
I look at him a while longer. My head is clearing but I still feel unsteady.
“Ok.”
“Everything I’ve told you about myself is completely true, but I left out a lot of details. I want to fill in the rest. I want to be honest with you. Wizards and witches exist in the world. We tend to live in secret communities or with charms and spells around out houses to keep people from noticing us. That’s why you don’t know about us. “
He stops talking and looks at me. I’m already staring at his face. There is no trace of laughter or mischievousness in his face. He is completely serious. I look at the daisy again, I’m completely silent. I feel something soft touch my shoulder. I looked and there was another daisy, just the blossom. Then another fell in front of me. I look up and it’s gently raining daisy blossoms all around me.
“Magic.” Charlie whispers.
I look at him again, “I can’t do this…” I try to stand up and sway, Daisy blossoms sliding off my shoulders. I stumble and catch myself on the bench. Charlie reaches for me and I put a hand up to stop him.
“I can fix this Gina. I had a plan. Just know that I’ve really enjoyed spending time with you. I’m so sorry.”
I look over at him and he looks off to his right and gestures like he’s trying to get someone to come over. “What? You’re going to tell me something like this, do something like this and then just walk away? I thought you were going to explain.” My voice starts getting higher, I’m becoming hysterical. He shoots a look to his right again and shakes his head.
“No, you aren’t going to explain?” I’m crying again. I feel like someone’s pulled the rug out from under me.
“No that’s not what I… no. I will, I want to. If you’ll let me, but you said you couldn’t do this so I thought that…”
“I can’t do this here. I… I need to move. I don’t think I can do this out in the open where people can walk by. Can we go to my room and talk?”
Charlie let out a huge sigh. “Yes, thank you.”
We walk side by side back to the hotel. We don’t talk. He holds the door open for me and follows me through. He follows me up the stairs to my room. I key open the door and this time I hold the door for him. He steps through and stops.

Charlie’s POV
I have no clue what to do when I get in her room. It’s very small, just a bed, chest of drawers and an armoir. I’m not comfortable sitting on her bed so I step to the side as she comes in and slides past me. She takes her shoes off and sits at the head of the bed with her back pressed against the headboard. She pulls her knees up to her chest, wraps her arms around her legs, and rests her chin on her knee. She looks at me and my heart sinks. She looks terrified. I’ve managed to scare her when all I wanted to do was share who I am. I should have just let Hermione modify Gina’s memory. I’m ready to turn to leave and get Hermione, I know she followed us and is probably in the hallway with a disillusionment charm on her, when I notice that Gina is still holding a daisy. She didn’t toss it away. For some reason I see that as a beacon of hope.
I don’t sit, I stand against the armoir. I don’t know what to do with my hands, I settle for putting them in my pockets and then pull them out and start pushing my palms together.
“Ok, tell me…” she whispers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I sit curled on my bed, watching this man standing across from me. He doesn’t look any different, but everything feels different. I’m scared of what he’s going to say and confused by what he’s already told me. He looks incredibly nervous.
“Ok, tell me…”
He takes a deep breath and repeats what he said outside. “Magic is real. It’s just hidden from muggles. Which by the way is what wizards call non magical people, it’s not a term for Americans. I’m sorry I told you that, but I had slipped up when I said that. And when I said I fly I mean I fly on a broomstick.” I let out a strangled kind of laugh when I say that.
“Witches on broomsticks.” I mutter.
“My arms” he holds his arms out and turns them so I can see the extent of the scaring. “You’ve never asked what happened.”
“Not my business.” I said “But I was curious.”
“I got these at work. I work with dragons. I don’t live in England anymore, I’ve taken holiday and have been staying with my parents for the past two weeks. I work in Romania at the dragon colonies” He’s speaking very fast and starts to pace while wringing his hands together.
“Dragons?” I say in disbelief. I can’t think about that right now. I’m getting dizzy again. I shake my head and look at him. “What did you do? In the park. You disappeared.”
“It’s called apparating. It’s a form of travel that wizards and witches use. You disappear from one place and moments later appear where you wanted to go. If done right, if you aren’t concentrating you can splinch yourself.” My eyebrows come down in confusion. “That means part of your body separates.” Now my eyebrows shoot up and my eyes go wide. “I was right behind you. I didn’t go far.”
I place the daisy that I carried back on the night stand and rub my hands over my face. My eyes sting from crying. My head hurts from crying, passing out, and all of this information I’m being given.
“Charlie” I whisper. He takes a step toward me and stops. “Why? Why are you telling me this?”
He takes another step toward me and then kneels beside the bed. He opens his mouth to say something and then quickly closes it. He looks so sad. I want to reach out and touch his face, hold his hand but I don’t. He takes a deep breath “I wanted, no. I want, this…” he gestures to the two of us “to become something. Or at least have the chance for it to become something. I have ways, as a wizard, that I can come see you in America but I couldn’t tell you that without telling you all of it. I have a backup plan if needed.”
“What type of plan?”
He looks down and bites his lower lip. “My sister-in-law, Hermione, was going to modify your memory.”
“WHAT?!” tears well in my eyes. “You’re going to erase my memory?”
“NO!” he leans on the bed and looks at me imploringly. “No, just the parts that that involved me. But I was going to have her modify my memory too, to erase memories of you.” He looks down at the bed. “I didn’t want to remember if I knew I had hurt you.” he whispers.
“Gina, I know this is a lot to take in. I don’t know if there is a time or a way that is good to share this kind of information. I made the best choice I had, but I want to share this with you. I want to introduce you to my world. I was hoping that if you didn’t have any pre arranged plans for tomorrow, you would be willing to come with me. I’m not asking you to answer now. I will wait downstairs in the lobby tomorrow morning. If you don’t come down by 9:00 I’ll know your answer. If you don’t come down, I promised I will stay away from you. If you think you would want to have this memory modified, leave a note with the concierge. Hermione will come by, she’ll take care of it.”
He stood and backed towards the door. “Thank you for listening to me. I’m sorry for… for a lot of things.” He got to the door and looked back at me. “Good night.” He opened the door and stepped out and I never said a word.

Charlie’s POV
She never said a word, just watched me walk out. I quietly closed the door, leaned against the wall in the hallway and closed my eyes. I felt a hand on my shoulder and opened my eyes again. Hermione gave me a sad smile and grabbed my hand.
“Come on Charlie. Let’s go.”
I’m glad she was leading me. I was having trouble seeing through the tears in my eyes.
