Secrets Unfolding
“Severus!”The wizard flicked his wand at the door, dropping the wards around it, without even looking up. A moment later the door opened and Draco came into the potions lab. Severus was glancing between a parchment on the desk and a bubbling cauldron of swamp green goop. Draco made a face when he peered over at the cauldron.“What is that?” Draco asked, bringing a hand up in front of his nose.Severus glared down at the cauldron before vanishing it.“A failed attempt at making the potion Harry brewed. Naturally, he wouldn’t have used the ingredients he’s allergic to. It’s making the experiments difficult,” Severus said.He lifted his head to regard his lover.“Did you need something?” Severus asked.Draco shook his head.“No. I came down to tell you Kingsley called me in. He wants to talk to me about something. After I’m done there, I’ll be back. Should only be gone a few hours,” Draco explained.Severus nodded as he started moving about the room to gather more ingredients. He was already running formulas and potions through his head on what may work.“Have you eaten breakfast?” the Potions Master asked.“Yes,” Draco answered.“Has Harry eaten?”“Yes and he took his potions, too. He’s outside somewhere on the grounds with Tippy.”The raven-haired wizard chuckled. The small house elf was taken with the quiet wizard. Even though he didn’t speak, Tippy enjoyed his company and it seemed Potter felt the same. Plus Tippy talked enough for the two of them.“Tell Shacklebolt I said hello,” Severus said.“Will do.”Draco started for the door when Severus shouted after him.“Where’s the fur ball?” he called.“Outside with Potter.”Draco made sure to lock the door behind him so Potter wouldn’t go snooping; even if his lover had told him not to go in. He checked to make sure he had everything before using the floo. He came out the other end through the entrance hall at the Ministry. He brushed off a little soot before making his way down to the Auror Department. He was thankful that none of the Aurors paid him any mind. They were used to him coming and going anyway. He reached the Head Auror’s office and walked right in. The Head Auror’s secretary was standing behind her desk, filing away some papers. She turned when she heard Draco come in.“Unspeakable Malfoy? He mentioned you would be coming in,” she smiled.“Can you please let him know I’m here?” Draco asked. The secretary put away her last file and closed the cabinet door. She swayed her hips as she walked around the desk and poked her head in the door. Draco shook his head. She may be hot, but the blonde had been gay for years; he preferred a nice hard cock and a muscled body. The secretary pulled her head back out of the office and told Draco he could go in. Draco nodded his head to her before disappearing inside. Kingsley was sitting at his desk signing some papers. He asked Draco to take a seat.“I’d rather stand, thanks,” Draco replied.Kingsley finished his last contract and stood up. He walked around his desk to lean back against it.“Is everything okay, Draco?” Kingsley asked.Draco found this an odd question but nodded.“Yes, of course. Why do you ask?” Draco asked.Kingsley sighed.“The Sloan case has gone south and we need your expertise as an Unspeakable,” Kingsley answered.Draco frowned.“Murphy worked that case, too. Why not call him in?” Draco demanded.“Because you were leading Unspeakable on that case. That’s why I called you in. I needed to ask about the personal time you’re taking these few days,” Kingsley explained.“Make a vow.”Kingsley shot him an offended look.“I beg your pardon?”Draco took a step closer with a very serious look on his face.“I’m not saying a word about anything unless you make a magical vow right now about what I tell you,” Draco declared. The Head Auror couldn’t imagine what was so serious that would make Draco force him to swear a magical vow. Yet he drew out his wand and spoke the words.“I, Kingsley Shacklebolt, swear on my magic to not disclose any information shared by Draco Malfoy at this time. So mote it be.”Both wizards felt the tingle of magic as Shacklebolt’s magic bound him to his promise. Draco aimed his wand over his shoulder, casting privacy and silencing wards over the door. He slid his wand back up into his holster before speaking.“I’m taking a few days to help Potter settle in. He tried to umm…kill himself. So he’s staying with me and Severus,” Draco told him.Somehow the news of the Savior’s suicide attempt didn’t seem to shock the Head Auror. If anything, the man looked relieved.“I was wondering who had taken him in when Albus told me he had been checked out of St. Mungo’s. Draco, I’m the Order member that found Harry,” Kingsley explained.Draco’s eyebrows shot up. Dumbledore hadn’t told him or Severus who had found Potter.“It was…it was a sight I don’t wish to see again. Harry was curled up on the floor with an empty potions vial near his hand. He looked like he was in so much pain. I couldn’t even fathom what he had done to himself.”Now, Draco was shocked. In pain? That didn’t sound like something Potter would have made to end his life. He conjured up a notebook and asked Kingsley to tell him every detail of what he had seen, heard, and smelled when he found Potter.“I thought I heard Harry grinding his teeth. I smelled…rotten eggs and pumpkin juice,” Kingsley explained.Draco wrote everything down. The notes might help Severus with learning what all was in Harry’s potion. Every clue would help them to find out everything they needed to know.“Maybe you can help us, Kingsley,” Draco suggested.“How so?”Draco explained that their running theory was something had happened in the five years after the war. Either starting with or ending with Potter’s year and a half marriage.“But I was talking to Severus last night. We didn’t even know they were married. I would have thought the papers would have been all over that,” Draco hinted.Kingsley surprised him by cracking a big smile.“After the end of the war, Harry used his power over the Houses of Potter and Black to cast down the Mouth-Binding Laws over the press.”Draco let out a long, low whistle. It wasn’t often that wizarding families used that particular type of old magic. Mouth-Binding Laws was old Pureblood magic that allowed for the Head of the Family to approve any and all newspaper articles before they were published.“Harry hates the attention from the press so he rarely allowed them to publish anything about him and his new wife. I have a file of all the articles they sent him over the years, the ones he approved and didn’t approve. I’ll get it for you.”Draco nodded. More pieces to the puzzle, as his lover would say. And with more pieces, hopefully more clarity. Kingsley left to go retrieve said file from wherever it was. Draco leaned himself back against the Head Auror’s desk and tilted his head back with his eyes closed. Still so many questions and so very little answers. Why marry before the end of the war? Duh. Because Potter didn’t think he’d survive. Why divorce after only being married for a year and a half?
What did Potter do in those years following his divorce?
Why did it lead him to suicide?
What was the potion he brewed supposed to do?
Groaning, Draco rubbed at his forehead as he brought his head down. A moment later, Kingsley walked in with a folder. He handed it over to Draco who shrunk it and tucked it away carefully into his jeans pocket.“I was looking through the papers. It includes documents from Harry and Ginny’s divorce.” Kingsley shuddered. “I’d forgotten how messy that was.”Draco frowned while glancing down at his pocket. He snapped his gaze back up to the taller wizard.“Didn’t Potter have Weasley sign a pre-nup?” It was common practice in all Pureblood families.Kingsley shook his head.“Evidently, she convinced him not to. They were both so sure Harry wouldn’t survive the war. Harry didn’t want her to be left with so little after he died.”Draco silently cursed Potter and his self-sacrificing nature. Draco crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back against his boss’ desk.“Speaking of Weasley, do you know why your Auror is no longer buddy-buddy with his best friend?” Draco asked, tilting his head slightly to the side. For that, Kingsley had no answer.“All I know is that about a year after Harry divorced from Ginny, Ron called out on a few sick days. When he came back, he removed all evidence of Harry from his office and he refused to talk about it.”Sigh. More questions left unanswered. Kingsley told Draco he would try to find out what he could.“Take the rest of the week off. Give Harry the time and attention he needs. We’ll do fine without you.”Draco smiled.“Thanks, King.”Kingsley stepped closer to place a hand on Draco’s shoulder. He squeezed it firmly with a small smile.“You just take care, Draco. Do what you have to do.”/……/
After leaving the Ministry, Draco stopped by Malfoy Manor to have lunch with his father. The older wizard was happy to have him stop by. His father asked him about his work and in return Draco asked him about his. For now, Draco chose not to tell his father about his newest house guest. He hadn’t discussed it with Severus or even Potter.
After visiting with his father and promising to visit again soon with Severus, Draco returned home. He arrived in the entrance hall about the same time the front door was creaking open. He turned to find a very dirty Harry and Tippy coming inside. It looked like there wasn’t even an inch of either one of them that wasn’t covered in dirt.Harry and Tippy both looked up at him as they came in. He brought his hands up in question with a shrug of his shoulders.“Did you roll in the garden or did you each just trip each other? Repeatedly?” Draco asked.Harry looked down at Tippy who looked back up at him. There was a twinkle in Tippy’s gaze as she nodded up at the wizard. Suddenly, Draco found himself in the middle of a dirty hug. Tippy hugged his legs while Harry hugged his upper body.“OoOoh! Potter, Tippy, off! Off, off, off!”They both gave him an extra squeeze before releasing him. Now Draco’s clothes were covered in dirt. Draco threw his arms up.“Really?!”He was annoyed, but the big smile on Harry’s face was worth the dirt. He shooed Tippy away before snagging a piece of Harry’s shirt sleeve with two fingers.“You need a washing,” Draco said, dragging the younger wizard up the stairs.Harry allowed himself to be dragged up to his room. With Draco closed in the bathroom, Harry stripped down and into a pair of bathing suit bottoms. Then he cracked the door open and popped into the bathroom. The bathtub was filled up and Draco was rolling up his sleeves.Confused, Harry raised his eyebrows up at the blonde wizard. Draco sighed.“You look like you’re ready to drop, but you need to get clean. I know Tippy probably made sure you had some lunch already. Soon as you get clean, you can rest, okay?”Suddenly feeling the exhaustion set in, Harry nodded his head. He reached up to rub at his eyes. Now that he thought about it, he had been at it for a while outside in the garden with Tippy. With another set of hands, he would be in and out of the tub before he knew it.With Draco carefully holding his arm, Harry sank down into the heated water. He shivered as a washcloth ran over his back. Reaching down through the bubbles, Harry snagged the other washcloth. Through some unspoken deal between the wizards, Harry washed certain areas without help. While he washed away the grime and dirt from the wizard’s back, Draco talked.“Did you know I’m a year older than you?”A perplexed Harry shook his head. He was scrubbing at a patch of dirt on his leg that didn’t want to go away.“Didn’t think you would. I was eleven when I caught Dragon Pox. Very serious case, too. I was deathly ill for most of the year. I couldn’t do much while I was sick so my parents couldn’t teach me much at the time. I was cursed just before summer set in.”So Malfoy had started First Year as a twelve-year-old. This meant that Malfoy was 24 right now while Harry was 23. That would explain why Harry got the sense of being younger when he was around the blonde wizard.Draco’s hand shook a little as he washed Harry’s back. The brunette had a nice body. Draco couldn’t deny that, no matter how hard he tried. He made sure he wasn’t shaking when he moved around to wash Potter’s face and neck. Harry had already washed his chest and was working on his lower body.It didn’t take them long to clean the dirt completely away. When they were done, Harry climbed out, but not without almost slipping. Thankfully, Draco caught him before he could hurt himself. Draco noticed the body in his arms felt warm. Much warmer than he should have. He brought the back of his hand up to Harry’s forehead and cheeks.“You’re a little warm, Potter. Probably just a cold,” Draco mumbled.Instead of using a towel, Draco cast a drying charm over Harry. He helped him climb into bed where Harry fell asleep soon as his head hit the pillow. Draco pulled the covers over his warm body and left to go tell Severus what he had learned at the Ministry. He would later regret not giving Harry something for the small fever. When Harry later woke up, he was sniffling with watery eyes and a low-grade fever.Unfortunately, the same ingredients that Harry was allergic to in the Dreamless Sleep, were all used in basic healing potions for colds. By the time Severus would finish brewing a fresh and safe potion for him to take, Harry would have healed on his own. Tippy brought him up a small meal which he ate very little of while miserably blowing his nose into some Kleenex.Draco had surprised him by bringing him downstairs to the living room. Severus was working over at his desk when Draco came in and dropped a large mound of blankets on the center of the couch. He was confused until a familiar bed of messy brown hair popped out of the blankets. Shaking his head, he turned away with a laughing smile on his face.Draco’s surprise was that the live aquarium in the frame above the fireplace was actually a television.“The perfect thing for a sick day is a movie. Here. Pick a movie, Potter.”Harry looked at the choices Malfoy had given him before poking his hand out and tapping one. Draco grinned as he put the others away and popped the DVD into a slot on the side of the TV. Draco returned to the couch and plopped down next to him. Severus turned on his desk lamp as Draco lowered the lighting in the living room. It made Harry feel like being in a real movie theater. Something he had only done once on a school trip in primary school.“You’re going to like this one. Severus got me hooked on watching movies a couple of years ago and this was the first one we watched. It’s about this crazy detective that goes around solving this big mystery. It starts after this creep-looking guy gets hung and then comes back to life.”Harry wondered briefly when Draco lost his mind and if Snape knew he had a crazy man for a lover. Judging by the chuckle from the corner, Snape already knew. Harry sniffled and curled his legs up onto the couch. At some point during the beginning of the movie, Harry started leaning. Before they were halfway through the movie, Harry was leaning against Draco. For the sake of comfort, Draco had pulled an arm around his shoulder to gently hold him as he leaned on him.Severus glanced over his shoulder and raised an eyebrow. Usually, his young lover wasn’t this close with anyone, but him. He noted that Harry was on the verge of falling asleep. His eyes were half-lidded and his head was bobbing down with a small jerk up as he tried to fall asleep. It brought a small smile to his face.End of Chapter FiveSecrets Unfolding
