Falling into Destiny
Chapter Five
There had been little time between your conversation with Draco and when you went to your dormitory. Every single second you were trying to think of clever ways to keep Blaise Zabini out of your bed. Being a Cambion, a half-human child of a succubus or incubus, wasn't like being a vampire. Unlike vampires who feed on blood, the older you got the harder it was to resist feeding. It had been a constant struggle not to feed on someone since puberty hit you and it had only been getting worse as the years went on. You knew from reports and from your father that you had passed the age where most cambion take someone to their bed. And by all that was good you wanted to keep adding time to your record.
But you had to be realistic. You knew that if Blaise did get into your bed that you wouldn't have the strength of will to turn him away. When that happened breaking school rules was going to be the least of your problems. Yet no matter how much you wanted to think of something clever you were too drained mentally and physically to be any sort of productive. Which meant that as you prepared for bed, thoughts of what was going to happen filled your mind. Some strange part of you was thankful that you felt sick to your stomach about that because you also recognized that another part of you was thrilled. What was funny was the fact that you weren't sure if that was the teenage human hormones or the hungry sex demon side of you.
Either way your body was covered by thick layers of blankets, more than pretty much any other person in the castle, in preparation for the cold night ahead. As you lay on your side with the blanket up to your nose, you heard the sound of feet on the stone just outside the door. They didn't shuffle about which meant that it was a purposeful walk of someone who wasn't tired. That made your stomach tighten up, the knot twisting and turning on itself like a snake with its head cut off.
As the door started to open, you heard a whiplash of a voice call out. "What are you doing here?"
The voice belonged to the Head Girl of Slytherin. For once you were quite glad that she was patrolling the hallways. It wasn't that she was a bad person, completely, it was just that she was very good at her 'job'. Which meant that it was hard to get away with anything. You supposed it kept the Slytherin girls in line for the most part but her being so dedicated to that got annoying. Especially when she let the bed jumping happen just like everyone else...but only so long as the boys stayed out of the girls' side.
"I wanted to talk with Dorian," Blaise Zabini's voice was clear, perfectly controlled.
You didn't hear any noise come from the Head Girl, not through the wall and thick wooden door. That didn't mean that she didn't make one though. You could practically imagine the eyeroll. As the door opened up and you saw her half step in, you shook your head slowly. She stepped back out and closed the door behind her.
"Dorian is not here, go look in the library or something," the Head Girl said.
You let out a long, deep breath. This year she was going to get the best present you could think of for Christmas. Really; you had never known her to be so randomly helpful.
"You're lying."
"I am not," she rebuked. "Go on. Get. Or I'll tell Professor Snape that you're sneaking around the girls' rooms. Then once you find Dorian the both of you can get a few detentions for causing trouble."
The air was still right then and very tense. You clung to what your father had said - that he might not do what you wanted him to do but he would do what would be good for you. The idea that you'd get in trouble because of him, you hoped, would not count in the benefit category. But you also knew that he probably thought you wanted to continue what had been started in the hallway. Zabini might not know what you were (which you were very thankful for) but he wasn't stupid. Sooner or later if the two of you kept meeting like that he was going to figure it out. If he was still enthralled at that point then you doubt he'd turn you in...but if he had returned to normal…
Well, you didn't want to think about that. Those kind of thoughts might lead you into believing that everyone was truly better if he stayed enthralled. Which were already floating around in your head as it was; you didn't need any more of a reason to think that bit through.
Thankfully, Blaise seemed to lean in favor of keeping the both of you out of trouble. You didn't hear any peep out of him or from the Head Girl for at least ten minutes. After a few more you finally allowed yourself to relax. The weight of the covers was a bit oppressive but it would beat waking up cold again. You turned over onto your side and curled up, hoping that people left you alone long enough to do some proper dream hopping tonight.
And for once, you got your wish.
In the morning, however, you were woken up by a rather annoying squeal. When you slowly rose from the near coma-like state your body went into you saw that another girl had a green envelope in hand. She was going through a card and a letter filled with black scratches that were probably words. As soon as she noticed that there was someone else to share her wondrous news, she latched onto it. Despite the fact that you had never been close to your yearmates, she seemed to act like you just had to know her good news. You supposed it could be a way of boasting but it really did look like it came from a happy place to you indulged her.
"They agreed," she said happily.
"Who agreed to what?" You asked for her benefit.
"Pucey's parents agreed to our engagement," the seventh year girl said with a happy expression.
You tried to look glad for her, you did. Despite not really knowing her as an individual you could still appreciate that she was happy over such news. You also knew that she and Adrian Pucey, who was a chaser on the slytherin quidditch team for the last few years, had been dating for the last year. So it was no wonder that she was happy that his parents agreed to the engagement; the whole blood status thing would continue another generation now. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing to know where everyone's family came from. You were more concerned with the fact that was was probably going to get married directly after graduation. But, again, it was just pleasant that she was happy about it and you were going to leave it at that. It wasn't like you were close with her anyways...though you probably should have been.
"I'm glad for you. I hope that you enjoy married life after you graduate."
Her smile seemed to get wider at that as she waved the paper in front of your face. "We're getting married over the Holidays."
Your eyes widened at that. That was a very rushed engagement, even for two wizarding families. Based on the fact that she had been complaining about pads last week, you were pretty sure it wasn't because of any children on the way. It was just going to be extremely rushed. An engagement party and then a Wedding all in under a month...that was insane.
"You should decorate your hair with some holly then, tie in the season," you tossed out offhandedly.
She smiled and for a moment you could almost pretend like the two of you were friends. You didn't though, despite her words to follow. "We'll see. You'll be attending right? Oh what am I saying, everyone is going to attend."
Most likely when she said everyone she met all the pureblood families. It would be a full on wizarding event; you'd been to plenty before. It was an excuse to gather together the so called elites of society and bask in the whole magical blood. Weddings also happened to be when most business and social connections were strengthened. There were more marriage agreements at a wedding than any other event. You knew that from experience after watching so many of them go on. Yet despite how many you have been to you had never been to one which would have to be put together so quickly. This was practically unheard of…
"Who will your date be?"
At that question you put on a polite smile and shrugged. It was hard to say, really. Not for the fact that you didn't know who it would be but for the fact that you didn't know if he'd want to go together. After all the agreement was to stay as divided as possible until graduation - a stipulation you had made that was in his best interest given what you were. Plus there was the whole attitude to get over.
"Well, as long as you don't bring someone disgraceful like a mudblood or something."
You let the comment slide. Weddings were not the time to try and push social norms; especially not if she was going to be under the stress of having to do it all in under a month. Most people tended to guard their values more viciously when put under pressure.
"I'm glad that you and your boyfriend are going to work out, but I need to get dressed and to the library," you said to excuse yourself.
She might be happy and you might be happy that she was happy but you'd rather not be in the same room. Your mood was blown when she brought up dates and it was further injured when her distaste for muggleborn reared its head. There was also a budding awkwardness when you realized that you'd just dreamslept with an engaged man. Oops.
