Chapter 5: Hogwarts Fun
“Something went wrong that night.” Dumbledore said, gently stroking Fawkes’ head, much to the bird’s happiness. “The Potter child was supposed to survive… But then he vanished. No body, no Voldemort. I need Harry Potter here to deal with Voldemort. Showing his protections will push Voldemort to find a way to get a new body… “Dumbledore moved over to the window and looked out over the grounds, considering the situation. Voldemort was in the castle already, he didn’t think he was already attached to Quirrell, but he couldn’t be one hundred percent certain on that front. Eventually they would figure out where the Sorcerer’s Stone was hidden. It had been his goal, when he had talked Nicholas to give the Stone to him, to set it up as a test for Harry, and a way to delay Voldemort returning to power. Not to mention his mother’s protection would have helped with dealing with Voldemort. He may have to handle this himself.
“I will not!” Cygnus said angrily, storming out of his dorm. “If you ask me again I’ll hex you.” The eleven-year-old Malfoy was so adorable that the seventh year girls had to bite their tongues from cooing over him.
“Come on Cygnus! I wanna see if the teachers will notice!” Draco followed his brother out of the room, looking more like their father in his arrogant demeanor.
The sixth and seventh year girls discreetly looked over the first year boys. They decided that you could never mix up the two as Cygnus had Narcissa’s delicate feature and quick brain, while Draco had his father’s slightly arrogant features and cunning intellect.
“NO!” Cygnus stormed out of the dorm all together and Draco followed him almost sheepishly. The other first year boys followed as well, yawning and scratching their heads as they headed through the entrance. Only after they had gone did the older girls make cooing sounds.
Cygnus huffed as he sat down at the Slytherin table and refused to look at Draco. Draco groaned, Cygnus was as touchy as a girl! Seriously, so he wanted to play a prank on the teachers, it wasn’t unusual for them to do odd things.
Like the time they had made Mom a birthday cake and Draco had tampered with it just a bit and it ended up exploding everywhere. Cygnus and Mom had been so angry, while he and Dad couldn’t stop laughing.
It was near Halloween now, the boys had settled into Hogwarts life without a fuss, already picking fights with Ronald Weasley. Although, Cygnus wouldn’t allow his brother to pick on Neville. Cygnus knew about Neville’s parents from one of Dad’s diaries he had found in the library last year. He had been shocked to learn that he had an Aunt Bellatrix, and that she was mad. So he was firm with the Slytherins about leaving Neville Longbottom alone or Cygnus Malfoy would be after them with a vengeance.
Their teachers were pleasantly surprised. The boys were like dry sponges that soaked up everything they had teach and wanted more. They were quiet and well-mannered in class, and seemed to compete against each other for higher grades, not that it caused animosity among the brothers. They loved each other dearly.
Cygnus stood up from the Slytherin table early and left without comment to his brother who was still eating. He was meandering his way up to his Defense Against the Dark Arts class (what a joke that was) when the staircase he was on moved and he forgot about the vanishing step. His foot was stuck and he didn’t know how to get it out. No Malfoy should ever be caught in any such situation.
Cygnus looked around him half-frantically. His face burned in shame when he saw the Weasley twins, their heads bowed together, alone in the hallway with him.
“Ex-excuse me,” Cygnus said, using manners his mother taught him from the cradle.
The Twins looked up. “What’s this then?”
“Looks to be a Malfoy stuck-“
“In the trick step.”
“Yes,” Cygnus, looking down in his shame, “could you… please… help me?” He asked quietly.
The twins looked at each other. Well, this wasn’t anything like what Da had told them Malfoys were like. The boy was embarrassed to be caught stuck in the trick step even though it was only his first month in the school.
“We’ll help you, mate. I’m Fred –“
“And I’m George.” The two boys smiled at him and then helped him out of the trick step.
“Listen, young Malfoy –“
“Cygnus,” the first year cut off Fred, he believed.
“Cygnus, if you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask, alright?” George said, smiling at the first year.
Cygnus ran off down the hall before he was late for first period.
The Weasley boys exchanged glances, yes; young Cygnus Malfoy was an odd creature all right.
Cygnus made it to Defense Against the Dark Arts and was actually the first in the hallway outside the classroom. He stayed standing to ensure that his robe didn’t become wrinkled or dirty. After what felt like forever Draco joined him, along with the rest of the Slytherin first years. Cygnus narrowed his eyes at his brother, daring him to continue pestering him to do what he wanted. Draco decided he didn’t want to take on Cygnus’ infamous temper and instead drew Blaise into a conversation about flying lessons this afternoon. Cygnus chose to not be a part of the conversation. His whole group knew he was easily the best flier. He was born to be on a broom, but that didn’t really mean anything when compared to the fact that he was first year and wasn’t even allowed to have a broom at school until next year. Though he already knew that the Slytherin Seeker was going to be graduating this year with a spot opening up for next year. He only prayed that he made the team. Knowing already that he would be going against his own brother for the spot. Finally it was time to enter the classroom and for once Cygnus didn’t sit with his brother. Quirrell never seemed to care where anyone sat and today was no exception as Cygnus sat beside Blaise and Pansy was made to sit next to Draco. Draco sent his brother a look that said ‘how long are you going to punish me?’ and Cygnus felt a squirm of guilt, but turned his attention to Quirrell as the stammering idiot taught them some basic jinx or another. One that the twins had mastered about two days after bringing their books home from Diagon Alley.
After class Cygnus hurried out the door, but instead of rushing to charms he just waited for his brother to join him. Cygnus didn’t say anything, as the boys fell in step beside each other. Cygnus looked at his brother out of the corner of his eye. Draco didn’t bring up the prank idea again. The boys entered Charms and sat beside each other as usual. Preparing for today’s class on making objects float. The boys had most of the year 1 spells down, so this was just a chance to practice and make sure they had them absolutely right.
And right they did have them. After Professor Flitwick had explained the spell and movement to the rest of the class the boys said the spell in unison and their feathers floated above them. They grinned at each other.
“Good form boys!” Professor Flitwick said squeakily when he spotted them and then he moved to assist Theo, who was struggling with the spell. The rest of the Slytherins had it after a few tries. Theo finally got the spell before the end of class and Professor Flitwick decided not to give the Slytherins any homework since they all got the spell and could now do it easily.
The twins grinned at each other and headed to lunch with the rest of the Slytherin first-years. Today was Thursday, so at 3:30 they would have their third flying lesson since starting Hogwarts. The first two hadn’t been bad. Though, only Cygnus’ curt demand that no one in Slytherin pick on Neville kept anyone from sniggering when the boy fell off his broom and broke his wrist.
Cygnus thought back to that first lesson and the poor, terrified boy accidentally rising before Madame Hooch had blown her whistle. He remembered how Neville had dropped his Rememberall and Cygnus had picked it up when no one was looking. He went after dinner that day, without his brother, and visited the boy in the Hospital Wing to return it.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” Neville asked, looking at Cygnus warily.
“I just don’t think anyone really deserves to be picked on.” Cygnus shrugged, he hadn’t wanted to let on to the other boy that he knew his secret. “Oh, by the way, I would break your wand and get a new one if I were you.” Cygnus said softly.
“It was my father’s…” Neville said softly, looking at the wand on the bedside with a mix of sadness, longing, and loathing.
“Yeah, well, that’s probably why it doesn’t work for you… Say you lost it or something.” Cygnus suggested before leaving the other boy to get some rest.
Cygnus never mentioned his trip to the Infirmary to his brother. Cygnus had never kept a secret from Draco before, but he just knew Draco wouldn’t understand. Draco was their father, haughty and believing he was above most everyone else; while Cygnus was their mother, compassionate and caring.
Draco poked Cygnus in his side. “What are you thinking about?”
“How awesome it’s going to be to be on a broom again. Hopefully Madame Hooch will let us do something awesome today.”
“Yeah, well, the mu- Muggleborn girl still hasn’t gotten on her broom yet.” Malfoy sneered across the room at Hermione Granger.
Hermione Granger hadn’t gotten her broom to respond to her yet without a forceful command. Neville was no longer allowed on a broom, and Madame Hooch kept an eye on the Slytherins, but didn’t try to instruct them anymore as Cygnus had discreetly told her that they had had a tutor on Flying when they were about seven. Granted back then they were on, what, Comet two-sixties? It didn’t matter, the Slytherin first-years were good on brooms and Madame Hooch usually showed them some complicated thing or another and left them too it. Usually complimenting Cygnus by the end because he was a natural-born flier and usually ended up reshowing the Slytherin first-years how to do the maneuver halfway through their lesson time.
Today was no different, except she set up Ron Weasley to throw golf balls for the other first-years to catch. Except, he kept throwing them AT the Slytherins.
“Weasel, if you don’t knock it off, I’ll knock you off your broom.” Cygnus hissed as he went past Ron. Madame Hooch was on the ground with a few of the Gryffindors who were still uncomfortable with getting on a broom. Everyone needed to learn at least the basics.
Weasley’s response was to throw one in Cygnus’ face. Fortunately Madame Hooch chose that moment to look up and check on the in-flight first years. She saw Weasley hit Cygnus square in the face with the golf ball, causing his lip to split open and gush blood down the front of his robes and blew her whistle before Cygnus or Draco could knock the red-headed arse off his broom.
“WEASLEY! REPORT TO MCGONAGALL RIGHT NOW! AND TWENTY POINTS FROM GRYFFINDOR!” Madame Hooch grabbed a broom and flew up to Cygnus’ level, who had the hem of his robe pressed to his split lip. “Malfoy, head over to the infirmary and get that looked at please. Yes, Draco, you can go too.” Madame Hooch made sure that Ronald Weasley was already inside the castle before allowing the brothers to head up.
Luckily it was an easy fix for Madame Pomphrey. Who promptly set them on their way after that. The twin blondes left the Infirmary only to literally run into the red-haired twins.
Draco’s immediate reaction, after how their brother had treated his brother, was to sneer. “What do you two weasels want? Here to bully Cygnus some more?”
The Weasley twins looked at each other and then at the Malfoys.
“Why would we-“ George started
“Bully Cygnus?” Fred finished for his brother.
Cygnus kept his face blank. “No one was bullying me, but your brother is going to regret he ever messed with the Malfoy brothers.”
Fred and George looked at each other and realized very quickly that Ron had done something to the smaller of the two blondes. “Oh, yes…” George said, a mischievous grin on his face.
“He will.” Fred wore an identical grin. The two didn’t stay, instead hurrying off down the corridor talking in hushed whispers to each other. They had been watching the smaller Malfoy closely since the incident with the step earlier that morning and had noticed during Lunch and from other stories they had drawn out of some of the other students that Cygnus was basically known to not bully anyone, he usually kept his year mates from bullying the other students as well. He kept Draco perfectly in line, even if the two did make the occasional rude comment, it was usually after the other student had demeaned one or both of them or picked on them in any way. They had also learned that while the blondes had no compunction about picking mercilessly on Ron and Hermione (both had been prats in their own, Ron was, well, Ron, and Hermione completely disregarded any Wizarding custom, even after Cygnus had surreptitiously pointed her in the direction of several books that would help her fit in better), they never picked on Seamus, Dean, or Neville. As a matter of fact they never even talked to Neville. Not to mention they had learned about the incident between Cygnus and Neville over the Rememberall. From all of that the twins had learned they had decided that Cygnus wasn’t that bad, and possibly Draco too. And their brother was going to pay for fucking with the small boy.
Draco gave Cygnus a confused look. “What was that all about?” He inquired of his brother.
Cygnus shrugged and blushed. “They helped me when I got stuck; I don’t know what the rest of that was about though.”
Draco narrowed his eyes thoughtfully as he looked at his brother and then just sighed. Draco took his brother’s hand and led him down to dinner. Hopefully everything would go smoother now.
While at dinner they learned that Professor McGonagall had yelled so loud that classrooms two floors below her could hear her and they could see from the House-Point Hourglasses that 100 points had been deducted from Gryffindor. An older Slytherin told them that McGonagall had yelled mostly about disgracing the names Gryffindor and Weasley. The boy had been given a weeks detention doing odd jobs for Filch. The blondes smirked at each other happily.
They enjoyed watching Weasley as he scrubbed floors, cleaned graffiti, and did other jobs for Filch, all without magic. Cygnus wouldn’t allow Draco to taunt him, saying that it was beneath them. But what they didn’t know was that the Weasley twins were pranking Ron non-stop since they had found out about what he had done to Cygnus. They did know that no one in Gryffindor was speaking to the redhead. During Potions he was forced to work alone, and during meals wherever he sat everyone moved away from him so that he sat like an eye in the calm.
The next month passed in this fashion, and the first-years settled into life in the castle even more. They knew when to hop over the trick steps, they learned to cope with the moving staircases, and they were no longer were late for classes because doors moved or corridors became hidden from view.
Before they knew it, it was Halloween. After their classes they went to the Great Hall for dinner and everyone was suitably impressed by the decorations. A thousand live bats swooped through the Great Hall, causing the candles in the Jack-o-Lanterns to gutter. Everyone was having a great time eating just enough of dinner to take the edge off and then moving straight to the sweets.
And suddenly Professor Quirrell came sprinting into the Great Hall with terror on his face. Everyone stared as he reached Professor Dumbledore’s chair and slumped over. “Troll – In the Dungeon – Thought you out know.” And he fainted away.
