A sound of footsteps broke her out of her reverie.
She looked over her shoulder to see Hermione approaching. Lilla folded her wings, funny tickling sensation between her shoulder blades.
Lilla offered Hermione a smile when the girl sat beside her.
‘Mind if I join you?’ she asked, wrapping her coat around her.
‘Not at all. If you prefer my company to two snoring boys, then be my guest.’
Hermione gave her a gentle smile.
‘I couldn’t sleep,’ she admitted.
‘No wonder. I can see there is something bothering all of you. I know you are looking for something,’ Lilla said casually, and she felt the girl next to her tensing all over.
‘Don’t worry, I don’t want to know what it is. But if there’s anything I can help you with – I’m right here.’
Hermione smiled gratefully.
‘Thanks. We appreciate that. You have already done a lot.’
‘Not enough,’ Lilla mumbled under her breath.
Hermione didn’t hear or simply was polite enough not to inquire.
‘I just wish I could put the worries aside and simply go to sleep,’ she said instead.
Her exhaustion was clearly visible. There were dark circles under her eyes, and she lost too much weight.
Lilla nodded mindlessly.
‘Don’t worry. You’ll figure it out,’ she added with a smile.
Right now, all she could do to help was to take Hermione’s thoughts off whatever was bothering her.
‘So,’ she started, crossing her legs at ankles, ‘what’s the situation like between you and Ron?’
Hermione was taken aback. Her cheeks reddened instantly. She shook her head and her auburn mane bounced wildly.
‘I don’t know what you’re talking about, Lilla,’ she said unconvincingly.
Lilla limited herself to a knowing look and a smirk.
‘Oh, fine,’ Hermione gave up. ‘I don’t know what it is. He is my best friend, so is Harry, but Ron is… I don’t know, different.’
Lilla shrugged.
‘I can only tell you what I can see. He admires you, Hermione, that’s for sure. But, well, who doesn’t? And one thing I’m sure of – if you told him to jump into the fire, he would. He would do anything to make you smile, to see you happy. He would do his best to save you.’
While speaking, Lilla caught herself thinking about Sirius, again. What she said about Ron, she also meant about Sirius. So maybe that was something common for all men in love?
‘I know,’ Lilla continued, ‘that Harry would do the same for you. But I’ve noticed that Ron is the one imperceptibly staring at you when you’re not looking.’
‘So imperceptibly that you’ve noticed?’ Hermione grinned at her.
‘Exactly,’ Lilla returned the smile. ‘By the way, I see your hair hasn’t seen much of a comb recently, has it?’
Hermione laughed quietly, automatically trying to smooth her wild hair.
‘You know, you look no better,’ she added, still laughing.
It was Lilla’s turn to grin.
‘You malicious creature!’ she spoke in a low voice, her eyes glowing with laughter.
It was so nice to be able to talk to someone about such… girly things, to finally be able to forget about the problems surrounding them, at least for a short while.
And then Lilla heard it. A twig being snapped.
She straightened up immediately, her senses acute. Hermione noticed the change.
‘What is it?’ she whispered when she saw Lilla raising slowly, scanning the landscape.
Lilla didn’t answer, taking a few silent steps forward.
The sound didn’t repeat itself.
Protection spells created a barrier behind which the four of them were invisible and unheard by those being on the other side, but, as they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Without any sound, Lilla moved further to the right, where she thought the noise had sounded.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her back. She turned around immediately, only to see Hermione approaching the enchantment border.
‘Hermione, no!’ she hissed through gritted teeth, but the girl couldn’t hear her. She stopped, staring into the darkness.
Lilla started towards her, but came to a stop mid-step.
There was somebody out there.
She heard someone ploughing through bushes, and after a moment, a bunch of people emerged from the forest.
There were five of them. All men.
She noticed that each of them had a red band tied around his left arm.
Snatchers.
Two of them were carrying something. Or someone, rather. One of the Snatchers carried a man, his knees buckling under the weight.
The other – shit – he was carrying a child.
Lilla clenched her teeth in frustration. Fucking bastards, she thought.
They were hunting Muggle-borns and blood-traitors in order to hand them to the Ministry and receive a reward for it. Apparently, the two people they were carrying belonged to one of these groups.
The one carrying a child she recognized instantly.
Fenrir Greyback.
His tall, sturdy figure emerged out of the darkness. Moonlight illuminated his wolfish features.
It reminded her of the first time they had encountered. It was during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. Greenish light from the Dark Mark lit the werewolf in a similar way. She remembered duelling him – a tiresome fight with a man twice her size who liked to use his strength to his advantage and who relished human blood.
The other four she had never seen.
They marched slowly in silence. Lilla saw Hermione watch them in silent horror, standing right next to the border of the enchantments. Snatchers were heading west and were about to walk right under Hermione’s nose.
Hermione froze. So did Lilla, watching the scene, her stomach clenched.
Snatchers passed the girl – the one carrying a man, then Greyback, and the remaining three.
Lilla fought the urge to sigh in relief. And then her heartbeat stopped.
‘Wait.’
Her head jerked up when the group stopped, a few steps from where Hermione stood.
Lilla felt shivers run down her spine when one of the man, wearing black leather coat and plaid trousers, turned around.
The night breeze brushed away loose strands of his long hair, as he walked back, carefully, deliberately placing one foot in front of the other without any rush. He stopped right in front of Hermione. Unable to see or hear her, his face contorted in concentration, he raised a finger.
‘What’s tha’ smell?’
Lilla saw Hermione holding her breath when the man leant in closer. He was trying to locate the source of the smell. Which, in this case, was probably Hermione’s perfume.
He took a step forward.
One more step and he would cross the enchantments’ border and see Hermione standing right in front of him.
There was no time. Lilla knew she had to act.
She took a deep breath and began to run. Few seconds passed and she felt adrenaline rushing through her veins. She run faster and faster, trying to make as much noise as she could, only to draw the Snatchers’ attention from Hermione. The man standing in front of her became alert, hearing some indistinct noises through the enchantments barrier. Lilla turned abruptly to her right, plunging deeper into the trees. One more step and she left the camp’s boundary behind her. She could be seen and heard clearly right now.
And she kept running.
Thickset bushes hid her momentarily from Snatchers’ view but they could hear someone ploughing through bushes and trees half a mile from where they were standing.
‘What was tha’?’ she heard the same man asking.
Lilla felt her heart pounding. She prayed for Hermione to be safe and all the attention of the men be turned towards Lilla, towards the noise.
They had surely pulled out their wands, ready to strike an intruder.
She headed towards a small clearing. And when she got there, she would give a show.
She closed the distance in less than five seconds.
Lilla heard them shouting behind her, but she didn’t turn around. They were too far to see her face anyway, but she didn’t want to take any additional risk.
She stopped and looked up.
Clear, cloudless night sky. Perfect. Lilla smiled.
She heard Snatchers approaching. She didn’t have to turn around to know there were wands aiming at her.
Good luck, bastards, she thought.
She moved her arms – up and down, left and right.
Her wings unfurled and she bounced off the ground, soaring into the night sky, leaving Snatchers completely dumbfounded.
