Chapter 4
“Fuck,” Hank muttered as he read through the letter he received from a friend in the Bronx about the mess with that damned crime spree there. Yeah, his associates had stepped in shit all the way up to their hair with this bit. If they had just stuck to robbery, they could have managed to do something to help themselves. They hadn't.
Two were dead, illegal potions were involved, as in dealing them as well as use of others, three sexual assaults and various other not good bits. Yeah, they were the walking dead. If the DMLE and Aurors didn't kill them on sight, they were facing the death penalty. While people thought the Dementors were bad when it came to the UK, the US had the death penalty, something equally frowned on by so many. These boneheads were now facing it. As this was the Magical court, there was little to help them. Since he knew all involved, he was sure the DMLE was looking to talk with him. Yeah, his arse was staying out of the States until this bit settled itself one way or another. Any mail the fools sent him would just be returned without him opening it. Let them think they couldn't get in touch. No matter how you looked at it, he was staying as far out of the nightmare as he could. After tossing it onto the pile with other ones he had read, Hank leaned back with a heavy sigh. He would have to curtail some bits when it came to shipments to the States for a while. It wasn't a hardship as he had other means, but he wasn't going to chance someone tracing him and wanting to talk. No way. He'd manage, just like he had so many times in the past.Head going back with a loud groan, he rubbed both hands over his face and tried to think what he had to do to shift some bits. It wasn't hard, but he needed to send off letters fast to make sure the supply chain wasn't interrupted. And, well, he was going to ensure he was more circumspect than normal. Not a problem. He also wanted to go through his client list again. Anyone he knew who was the loud mouth sort was being shut out of dealings. He sure as hell didn't want to deal with worse or end up looked at in this mess. And he was going to press for the basics of what was going on and who to watch out for tonight when he met with this Sirius Black. He wanted to make sure he knew what was going on as it appeared he'd be here longer than he thought. While he could go elsewhere, he wouldn't make the money he did here in the UK. Yeah, he was staying until this damned war looked like it was growing to apocalyptic proportions. He'd manage. With a shake of his head, he pressed on. The next letter intrigued him more. It wasn't about the mess in the States or his business, but personal. Over the years since leaving school he had put out feelers to a few around the world to pick their brains about the spell on him. Oh, he never told them why he wanted to know, just asked questions. It had proven fruitful in several ways. Since then he had narrowed it down to a few out of the continent and in the Far East. They were proving most helpful when it came to some areas. He was finally able to give up everything he knew on it, though not telling them how, and getting answers. Some bits about it always puzzled him, so he thought if he knew the why behind it being such a way, he might be able to figure it out more. The biggies, like not being able to remember some bits was obvious. They were part of the spell. Other bits were odd, such as the Fat Man and Horse Face could remember it all, though couldn't say a word. The same with he could remember his name was changed and basic info about his life, such as his parents dying, but not much else. Even the paperwork on his vaults was odd in it showed they were from an inheritance, but not who he inherited them from. It just said mother and father, not names. He couldn't impart much either. He could say bits like he was an orphan raised by relatives, though not tell the relationship to them, and that his folks died in a car crash, but that was all. He was learning it was all from the spell. As he read the letter, he nodded. This shored up what he thought. The spell had been activated when the Dursleys signed the name changing paperwork and sent him off. It was applied to him directly because he was a minor at the time. They and that fuckhead Tyler had the spell put on them, but it affected them differently because of the intent. They had to remember some, but couldn't impart it because of the spell. After he finished reading, pleased it gave a few hints on how a spell like this might be weakened, he tossed the letter aside. His thought of trying to trigger whatever was spot on from what it said. It would be a natural way to disintegrate the spell slowly. From what it said, spells like this weren't ever intended to last forever, just long enough for the child, as they were generally used for adoptions, to assimilate to the new family. And, from what it said and he knew, they were almost never done anymore, just in extreme circumstances. Yeah, well, his was done for another reason and he was sure it was the Dursleys trying to end up shut of him forever.Hank planned to read the letter again later, so he sent it to the pile which contained personal correspondence then straightened up. There was plenty to do today, so he needed to tend to the mail before he could really start. Best to jump right in then head to Hogsmeade. He'd settle down before bed tonight and work with the letter more, then plan how he might manage to trigger some memories which might start knocking chunks out of the spell.
There was a plan for this. While Sirius was going through with the meeting, he was wary enough he wanted help close by. Taking what Dung told them about this Hank, he and Remus decided Remus, Bill and Charlie would be in the Leaky during the meeting. It wouldn’t be obtrusive or too close as he would be in one of the private parlors, but they'd be close if there was a problem. Bill would arrive first, then Remus and finally Charlie, then be sitting there when he came in for the meeting. If something happened, he would use the Patronus for a message and they would come help. After this meeting, he would judge from there to see what they would do and how to go about whatever.
“Still nervous about this, Sirius,” Remus admitted to his friend, shaking his head, as they were preparing the best they could a couple hours before the meeting.“Uptight myself,” Sirius admitted softly. “We'll manage, don't worry. After all, we've dealt with worse over the years and been in tighter spots. I doubt anyone is going to try something at the Leaky. Tom might be neutral because of so much, but he's not going to let anything serious happen. His business is suffering anyway over this nightmare. He'd lose even more if he let stuff get out of hand or the wrong sort use the place.”“True,” Remus admitted. “Still—we have to stay cautious because of so much anymore.”“And if Dung is right about this bloke, he has information we desperately need,” Sirius told him. “Let's see how this goes. I can try to make damned sure the meetings stay at the Leaky. You lot might not be able to join me, but you can stay close.”“Might be the best way to go, yes,” Remus agreed. “Let's see what comes of this and go from there.”“All we can do,” Sirius told him, both to assure Remus and himself on the matter. Yeah, he was plenty apprehensive and wanted to stay safe. “We'll deal and move on. Let's see what it brings.” Then he began walking through the plan they came up with to cement it in his mind. The more he had it down, the better he'd feel.
Hank took a seat in the small parlor he rented for this meeting, making sure his chair was facing the door, back to the wall. Yama was on a perch by the fire, eating from a bowl Tom provided. Like most, the wizened man was highly wary of the bird, shooting Yama almost fearful looks though he had seen him before when he rented rooms like this. It was fine with him. When people were wary of his companion, he was left alone. Perfect as far as he was concerned.
It was about ten minutes before Dung and Black were supposed to show. With Dung, he expected him to run late, but wasn't sure because he had someone with him. Before coming in, he scoped out the main dining room. What he observed were three he knew were in the Order at a table close to the bar, talking. His assumption was they were there for Black as a backup. Again, not unexpected. He would do, and had done, the same before when it came to first meetings with ones he didn't know. As long as they didn't interfere, he took no issue with it.As he sipped his beer, nibbling on the burger he ordered, he ordered his thoughts and made sure his normal mask was on. If the meeting went well, he'd get the intel he needed for so much, what he wanted. It was just a matter of getting through the meeting. Well, and making sure Dung didn't stay. He dealt with the man plenty, but didn't want him around for these kinds of bits. With what he knew of Dung, what he might come across with would end up used in a way he didn't want. Dung had his uses for other areas and he planned to keep his dealings with him there, not in these kinds of matters. If Black was someone he could deal with, he'd use him for this bit and whatever else he could get. With a glance at the loudly ticking clock to keep track of time, he made himself as comfortable as he could get, ensuring his wand was right by him and gave a discreet feel to make certain the Magical knife he carried was right where he wanted it in his pocket. Nothing against Black, but he wasn't taking any chances. And now he just had to wait.
Eyes all over as he walked into the Leaky with Dung, Sirius was pleased to see the three they arranged to be there at the table they talked about. Even better was there wasn't anyone in the pub he didn't know. And the ones there were all the harmless sort just having a drink or a meal. Good. It made him feel a tad better there were no obvious people out of place. That didn't mean there weren't others around, but he was safe so far.
As Dung talked to Tom, he did another quick check then followed the two to one of the small parlors. Thankfully, it was one closest to the bar so everyone could be there in seconds if this bit headed south. When Tom knocked and they were told to enter, he stiffened up, clutching his wand, then stepped in when the door opened. The first thing his eyes lit on was the massive evil looking bird perched by the fireplace. He even flinched when the creature looked at them and hissed, something which not only raised goose bumps, but sent a shiver down his spine. It was the ugliest animal he had ever seen and looked out and out frightening. He now understood what Dung said about the bird. And Dung was making sure to stay far away from the creature. Taking the hint, he did the same.As Dung introduced him to the man who stood when they came in, Sirius took in everything about him. The first thing his eyes were drawn to was his eyes. They—well, at first, he thought of Lily and Harry when he saw them. They were the same color of green and seemed like the same shape. These were different, though. They were cold and hard, something he couldn't ever envision seeing in either Lily or Harry's eyes. Then came the looks. While there was something which seemed familiar, he discounted it because of the cold looks, expressionless facade and hard planes of the face. Yeah, Dung was right; this dude must have had a hard life. He was wary of the bloke because of the expression and the way he carried himself, but the danger signals weren't going off. He thought if he played it straight, he should be fine.As Dung made the introductions and went through the normal, Sirius took in everything about Hank. He was average looking and thin, nothing special about him other than the way he carried himself. Oh, this was someone you could easily tell you didn't want to mess with. It came from not only his body language, but the way he carried himself. On edge, though not overly so, he waited to see what was coming. He'd go through with this, but he would stay alert through the whole thing.
As Hank dealt with Dung, his eyes kept drifting to Black. Oh, he made sure it didn't look like they were, but they were. Unlike most times he did this, it wasn’t that he was on edge or scoping out the situation. It was something entirely different and new for him; he had fallen instantly in lust with the man Dung brought in. He wasn't sure why either.
While doing research on Black so he knew what he was dealing with, he had seen pictures of the man from old articles. All of them had been from when he was younger, like the mugshot when he was booked. In those he had been quite handsome, no doubt, but nothing to write home about. The man standing here was good looking, no doubt, but he was older, more careworn than in the pictures. And Hank wasn't sure why, but he found him dead sexy. Maybe it was his eyes and the way he carried himself coupled with the crude prison tattoos he could see. He didn't know why, but he was drawn to the man. As would be expected, he would keep himself under control and not let it show, but he vowed to have a few more meetings with the man to see his leanings and what he could manage. A good roll in the hay with someone who produced this effect in him would be quite fun!Hank waited for Dung to do the introductions then shooed him out. Once more taking a seat, making sure his wand was right by him, he then waited for Black to order a butterbeer before launching in. Though he liked the way the man looked and was intrigued, this was a business meeting. Business came before personal whatever. “Dung tells me you lot want some information I have on the other side of this pissing contest,” he said as an opening line, figuring it was the best way to start.Sirius thought Hank's accent was probably about the strangest he had ever heard. You could hear the British in it, but it was mixed with a New York accent. The combination of the two was quite odd. Add in the cold tone, something almost emotionless and it was unlike anything he had heard before. However, he focused, making sure to stay alert. With a nod, he said, “We do. Any little bit can help with what's going on. He said he thought you'd do better dealing with me than having him pass what you know.”“I know Dung too well to give him information to pass,” Hank snorted, sipping his beer. “My dealings with him are in other areas.” Putting the bottle on the small table by the chair, he asked, “What do you lot want to know? We'll kick off there. He has bought you some for free with some help he gave me. The rest—it doesn't come without a price tag.”And there it was, Sirius thought with a sigh. He'd work with what was presented, “Anything you have that can help us or take out some bigger named Death Eaters.” Then he asked, “What's the price for more of what you know?”“For now, information,” Hank told him bluntly, eyes locked on the man. You could easily tell Black was uptight, but he was dealing. “Not been in the country for a while, so I want to know what's going on to protect myself and who to avoid.”“Easily done,” Sirius admitted, leaning back, feeling better since he had a foundation to work from.“Let's call this a tit for tat situation,” Hank said, planning to lay the ground rules for the meeting. “I'll give up something then you do. We have an hour. At the end we can see about another meeting.”“Something I can do,” Sirius agreed with a nod. He still wasn't relaxed, but could work with it. And would. Now he had to figure out just what the bloke knew to see if it was worth his time. After deciding to launch in with something big, he said, smirking slightly, “I know of a couple big named Death Eaters who have a recreational potion problem. Probably something you lot can use.”“Oh, you bet your arse we can,” Sirius admitted, giving an internal grin. If he could get names and pass them to Kingsley, the DMLE could take it from there then see if they could arrest them. Any out of this pissing match was good! “Care to say who?”“I'll give hints, but won't say the names outright,” Hank told him, still smirking. “I'm sure you'll guess.” Shifting around, glancing at Yama, who was eating and relaxed, he was pleased. The bird had excellent instincts when it came to who to stay wary of. As Black wasn't setting him off, he was good.“Will need more than clues to do something about them,” Sirius told him honestly.“I can be persuaded to give up more,” Hank told him, trying not to chuckle. Then he switched and asked, “I want a brief rundown of what's happened over the last five years. The bits which didn't make it into the papers,” he then said.As Sirius had no problem giving that up, he launched into the summary of what happened. So far, so good. If it stayed this way, he wouldn't have a problem with this.As Hank listened to what Black had to say, there was something else there. He wasn't sure what it was, but there was something about the voice and other bits which were triggering something in his brain. While he couldn't be sure, he thought it had to do with what the spell took away from him. And that made exactly no sense to him. How did Black factor into this? He didn't know. As he was clueless about so much, he didn't have a way to figure it out either. He would just take everything in and sort it later. Maybe he could figure it out and have a start where to look.
“Oh, hell yes we can use this,” Kingsley said with a grin and vigorous nod. “I'll go back tonight and pass it along. Will just say a source passed it. With the mess going on, I won't have to give up more than that.”
“Crabbe and Goyle will probably end up caught within forty-eight hours if we can catch them at it,” Tonks agreed, looking excited. “We'll just have to tail them.”“I have a feeling, from the way some of this was put to me, Hank knows plenty more about others,” Sirius told them, looking around. “The bloke is cold and you get the feeling he's not one to piss with, but he gave up enough, some of which I could easily verify by just knowing what he was talking about, to tell me he'll be a huge help. The way he worded plenty seems like he holds no love for the other side of this mess. And I doubt we even scratched the surface of what he knows.”“This is good, what we need,” Albus sighed, looking happy. “You were able to set up another meeting with him to gather more I take it?”“We'll meet next week then go from there,” Sirius explained. “It's not anything I have a problem with. Only thing he wanted was information about what's going on. I'm sure it's to protect himself, but there's more. He'll probably use it in some way. Don't have a problem with it as he didn't ask anything I would think twice about telling him. And we'll be doing it at the Leaky. He agreed to do the meetings there, so I feel better about it.”“While this isn't everything we need, it can help,” Albus said with a happy expression on his face. Anything helped at this juncture. If Hank had information, they would take it, gladly. “If you need help or something else, let us know.”“Will do,” Sirius nodded. With a snort, he added, “And I wouldn't piss with that bird of his if you paid me!” He then relayed what Dung said and added his own observations about Yama. “Yeah, that's better than any of the 'pets' Hagrid has, trust me! I pity the idiot who tries to take on Hank if that bird is around.”“In this mess and considering what Dung said about him, I’m sure he needs something to protect himself,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. However, he was happy it didn't end badly and Sirius was safe. He had been very concerned about him during the hour he was meeting with the man.“For once, it sounds like Dung helped instead of using this to further whatever scheme he has going,” Bill tossed out there, chuckling.“From what was said, I think this Hank is one even Dung doesn't want to tangle with,” Sirius told them, looking around. Then he went on to talk about a few of his observations and what he thought. This was good and he felt better now that the initial meeting was over. While he was sure it was a case of putting his best foot forward when it came to Hank and there was plenty he didn't see, he would press on. What was given up tonight was more than enough to shore up that the man had what they needed. Now he just had to worry about what it would take to get it out of him. He'd manage in the end, all he had to do was wait and see what it took. If there was one thing Sirius was good at, patience was it. He managed in Azkaban and could for this, especially with what it would bring.
