Author’s Note: Severus is a survivor of the War, living in peace at home. He occasionally brews potions and provides consultation with Healers at St. Mungo’s.
E is for Emergency
“Potions Master Snape! We have an emergency!”Severus sighed. He set down his glass of Scotch and the newest potions journal. He waved his hand, opening the floo to St. Mungo’s. Healer Leon Mullipew flew out of the fireplace like a Snitch out of its box. He didn’t even pause to dust his robes off. Severus glanced at the clock sitting on the mantle.“It’s a tad early for medical emergencies, isn’t it, Leon?” Severus asked, standing.“An Auror team just came in from a failed mission. They’re all cursed up, but one is worse off than the whole lot. Whatever curse he’s under…it’s not from anything we’ve ever seen before. Nothing I have ever seen before.”This shocked Severus to the core. Mullipew was easily over a hundred, despite looking half that age. The man had been working as a Healer for eighty years, encountering a wide variety of sicknesses, curses, and muggle diseases affecting wizarding kind. Severus summoned his medical potions kit and followed Mullipew back through the floo.St. Mungo’s was in chaos when they arrived. There was at least five Aurors being tended to by a variety of Healers. Severus followed along beside Leon as he described the symptoms.“He’s bleeding heavily from the head and abdomen. We’ve been able to slow the bleeding, but not stop it. The Auror has suffered two seizures since coming here. He’s unconscious, but aware of his surroundings. But what concerns me is his back,” Leon said. When asked for further details, Leon described a purple rash slowly working its way up the Auror’s back from the base of his spine.“I’m afraid that if it reaches all the way to the base of his skull…it could kill him.”They turned into a room where a team of Healers were bustling about a hospital bed. The Auror was bare from the waist up and lay on his side with his back facing the door. Severus gritted his teeth when his gaze fell on the rash. It was an angry, deep purple and it was creeping up the Auror’s spine even as Severus looked over it. He noticed a healer trying to stem the bleeding from the Auror’s head wound. The Healers hovering near the wizard’s back backed away to allow Severus to step up to the bedside. Drawing his wand out, he cast a few personal diagnostic spells. The spells told him the rash was as deadly as Mullipew made it out to be. The rash was connected to his inner organs and top of his spine. It went and the wizard went undoubtedly die.He drew open his back and carefully took a sample of the rash. He placed a preservation spell on it so it would keep until he returned to his lab at home. He walked around to cast more diagnostics and nearly dropped his wand in surprise. He had thought the dark hair had been a coincidence, but now that he saw the young wizard he realized it was his worst nightmare. He hadn’t even known Potter had joined the Aurors. He waved the Auror aside and cast a spell that luckily stopped the bleeding altogether from his head. Another wave and the wound on his abdomen stopped as well.I suppose it was too much to ask that Potter stay out of my life after the war, Severus thought. The Healers stood back while he checked Potter over. The twenty-year-old was paler than his godson and he looked as though a Hippogriff had gotten a hold of him. His body was ladled with deep scratches and bruises. Personally, Severus was surprised his back didn’t look as bad as his front.“Has he experienced any more seizures?” Severus questioned.A female Healer piped up from the background that he had not.“Any other symptoms appear?” Severus continued.“He’s spiked a fever in the last few minutes. He suffered a shattered knee on the second seizure but we were able to relieve that pain and bandage it.”Severus’ hand fell to Potter’s knee. The first one was okay, but the second one he did feel a bandage. Lifting the sheet away, he peeled back the bandages to check the knee over. The knee was a dark purple and Severus could already tell Potter would be out on desk duty for a month for therapy. He didn’t have time to think about that, however.Time was of the essence. He didn’t know how quickly the rash would spread and he had a Potter to save.Again.After gathering everything he needed, Severus returned home and went straight to his Potions lab. The rash was like nothing he had ever seen. He had tried several things which didn’t seem to garner a reaction from it. However, he discovered a short time later that cooling charms made the rash grow. He made an emergency floo call just in time; one of the Healers had been about to cast a cooling charm to reduce his fever. After only two hours of research, the rash had reached the middle of the young wizard’s back. Time was running short. He was beyond shocked when Mullipew returned in the wee early hours of the morning with another familiar face. His godson Draco worked special mission as an Unspeakable with the Ministry.“Draco, I am afraid I am short on time at the moment,” Severus told him.“Severus, I’m hoping Draco can shed some light on the failed Auror mission. There was a second team he was a part of that was with the team you saw at St. Mungo’s,” Mullipew explained.Severus waved him away and pulled his godson into the Potions lab.“Explain, Draco,” Severus demanded.“I was on leave on the mission with another Unspeakable. The first team lost their wits on a mission to secure an illegal Hippogriff breeder. Potter was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Draco explained.Severus rolled his eyes.“That is not news to me, Draco. As you well know, Potter is attracted to trouble like no one’s business,” Severus replied.Draco shook his head.“You misunderstand me, Godfather. Potter wasn’t on the mission. One of the Hippogriffs the criminal was experimenting on cut loose during the raid. It landed in the local town where Potter was visiting. He was literally in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was coming out of a shop when the Hippogriff landed and attacked. It was attracted to his magic as it was a Muggle town.”Severus didn’t want to think of how much work the Obliviators had to do after that kind of incident.“What kinds of experiments were being done on the Hippogriff?” Severus asked.Draco shrugged as he reached a hand into his robe pocket.“Not sure. He’s being interrogated at the Ministry right now. But here’s a vial of the Hippogriff’s blood,” Draco said, producing a vial from his robes.Severus accepted it in a pinch and dismissed his godson with the wave of his hand. The news was alarming, but relevant. He had Potter’s medical file from Hogwarts on his table. It told him what potions and potions ingredients he couldn’t ingest. Over the next hour, he was able to concoct a possible serum to counteract the rash.He returned to St. Mungo’s to find yet another familiar student sitting with Potter. Hermione stood up when he entered the room.“Professor Snape,” she greeted. He nodded his head. “Miss Granger.”He raised an eyebrow when she raised her hand so the back was facing him. She wiggled her fingers, showing off the beautiful diamond ring on her ring finger. He placed his bag down beside Harry’s back.“Mrs. Weasley, then, I presume,” Severus said, extracting his wand from his pocket to cast diagnostics along Potter’s body.Hermione grinned. “It’s…uh…Mrs. Malfoy, actually.”Severus’ gaze snapped up and his grip on his wand loosened, but he kept it from falling. After staring for a second or two, Severus lowered his gaze back to his scans.“I should like to hear that rather interesting tale later. Preferably with a conscious Potter to ensure my own sanity,” Severus said, murmuring the last bit.Hermione hid a rather large grin behind her hand as she sat back down. Then she dropped her hand to take Harry’s hand in hers and squeezed. She nearly released it when Harry’s face scrunched up in pain and he let out a whimper.“Professor?”“I saw.”Severus quickly filled the serum into a needle. He numbed the area where the rash had begun. He glanced up at Granger…Hermione…Malfoy.“You may want to avert your gaze,” he cautioned.Hermione wisely took his advice and kept her gaze on Harry’s face rather than what her former professor was doing. That was good since Severus didn’t reckon she wanted to see him stab her best friend in the spine with a needle. Potter sucked in a tiny breath, but showed no other reaction to the serum being administered. He watched the rash carefully as it was now nearly three-quarters of the way up Potter’s spine. He almost sagged in relief when the rash started receding. He glanced over his shoulder and softly called Leon’s name. The Healer stepped inside and swept over to the bed. He smiled when he saw the rash beginning to disappear.“Wonderful. A wonderful job, Severus. Thank you. Bless you. Return home and rest, my old friend. We can care for him now,” Mullipew told him.He nodded. It had been a long night and he did deserve some rest. Before he left, he left a message with Hermione to tell her husband they would be talking very soon about certain things. Given the laughing smile across Hermione’s face, she knew exactly what he was talking about. As soon as he returned home, he collapsed onto his bed and fell into a deep sleep.A few days later, he found himself visiting Potter. The younger wizard had yet to awaken, but the Healers were not concerned. He was out of the worst of it now and his body just needed time to catch up. Potter now lay on his back with his head and abdomen heavily bandaged.“The Healers are not concerned with your injuries, nor are your friends. Me? I know better. You do this for the attention. I am curious as to why you did not become an Auror. Your friend wasn’t enlightening on the matter.”Severus shook his head.“Hermione Granger Malfoy. I imagine Lucius is screaming in his cell at Azkaban that his only son and sole heir has married a muggle-born witch. She could be the smartest, richest witch in all the world…and he still would never approve of their union,” Severus said.“You should have been there when ‘Mione told Ron.”Severus’ gaze snapped up to the injured wizard’s face where small flecks of emerald green were staring back.“How long have you been awake?” Severus demanded.Harry chuckled, but it cut short when he reached a hand up grasp his chest.“Long enough…to know you’re curious as to why I’m not out there ridding the world of more dark wizards,” Harry murmured.Severus gave him a sharp look. He snatched up the glass of water sitting on the side table and shoved it into Potter’s hand. He hadn’t missed the miserable look the young Savior had been shooting at it. Noticing the boy’s hand begin to shake, Severus stood up and clamped his hand over Potter’s. He helped him to raise it to his lips where he took small sips to quench his dry mouth and throat. When it was clear he was done, his hand fell away and Severus placed the glass back down.“I feel I have earned my reward for saving your life once more. Tell me your story, Potter,” Severus commanded.Harry stared down at his lap.“I’m afraid it’s not a very interesting story, Sir,” Harry said softly.“I will be the judge of that. Speak, Potter.”It turned out that Potter’s story was a tad bit interesting. He had returned with his friends to Hogwarts to finish his teaching. His N.E.W.T.’s were okay; they offered him many opportunities for work. The boy chose to travel instead of working; chose to live freely instead of marrying the youngest Weasley. He had been visiting different countries, learning about different wizarding cultures. He had actually been on his way home to visit when the Hippogriff had.Severus noticed Potter’s eyes and head drooping. The boy was obviously still greatly exhausted. They knew only part of what the attack had done to Harry Potter. Time would only tell how affected he would be. Severus drew his wand from a hidden pocket and flicked it at the bed. The sheets rolled back up to cover the brunette and the pillow fluffed itself, despite Potter’s murmuring protests.Severus stood and planted a hand on his shoulder, firmly yet carefully pushing him down.“Close your eyes and rest, Potter.”The emeralds disappeared as Potter, for once in his life, listened to the other wizard. He returned to his seat and watching over his former student. If one were to look close enough, they would see a faint smile gracing his face. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
