Sirius’ POV again – Still at the party

I almost had a heart attack when Lex arrived. The dress she was wearing was very revealing. I was sure her mother had bought it, and told her to never wear it in her father’s presence. There was no way that Lord Zabini would ever approve of this kind of attire for his daughter. When she started dancing with Lily every bloke on the dance floor seemed to look at her. Not that I could blame them, she was gorgeous. When Davy asked her to dance, I felt like a giant monster had awoken inside me, trying to claw its way out. I suppressed the need to punch Davy in the face and showing everyone that I had a claim on Lex. Thinking about it, did one really hold his dancing partner that close? Was Davy trying to get his way with Lex?
I also felt frustrated, why couldn't I dance with her? Why shouldn't my friends accept whomever I decided to hang out with? Was I really being ridiculous about this? Lex had told me a hundred times over the summer holidays, that I was. If my friends would be true friends, they would be fine with it. There was of course, this whole house rivalry thing. Luckily Lex wasn't a Slytherin. With the whole wizarding world at war, Slytherins were greatly distrusted. I was sure it didn’t help her case that Lex was dubbed the Ravenclaw –Slytherin, or Slytherin princess.
I was so busy watching Lex that I didn’t notice James joining me. He probably stood there long enough to find out what was bugging me. He noticed whom I was looking at, because he couldn’t hide his tone of surprise ‘So, Zabini, really I thought you hated her?’ It still took all I had to prey my eyes away from Lex and Davy. ‘What?’ I asked, taken aback by the question. ‘Come on Padfoot, it’s painfully obvious.’
I snorted ‘Obvious to whom? And no I don’t hate her, I just don’t like seeing her hanging out with Snape’ It wasn’t as if Lex had noticed, normally she was so busy with Snivellus, and now Davy had all of her attention. I scowled at them when Lex laughed at something Davy had said. ‘If you’re that jealous, maybe you should ask her to dance, at least then she’d be in your arms.’ I was surprised by the lack of snide comments about Lex. ‘You wouldn’t mind if I went out with her?’ I asked. It took James some time to answer, as if he was contemplating his answer before speaking. ‘I’ve noticed you staring at her in That way since the beginning of the schoolyear, if she’s what you want, then by all means, go for it.’ I raised me eebrows at him, I never expected him to be so observing. ‘Okay, it was Moony who brought your behaviour to my attention, the only oblivious one is Wormtail.’ He admitted.
Hoping for a change of subject I turned my attention to Moony and Lily. ‘at least she’d be in my arms, like Evans is in yours at the moment?’ Contrary to what I had expected, James smiled ‘I asked Moony to test the waters for me, and requested another slow, 2 songs from this one.’ Sirius it seemed like a good plan, Evans liked Moony, it was good that he could test the waters for James. ‘It might give you enough time to gather up the courage to ask Zabini to dance.’ The song was over and Moony joined them ‘Has Sirius finally admitted he likes her?’ he asked. Neither James nor I answered him, Lily and Lex just passed us. I couldn’t help myself, I smiled at Lex, to my great surprise she smiled back at me. Remus and James exchanged a surprised look. To break the uncomfortable silence Remus confirmed that Lily would dance with James later on.
‘So James, did you dance with Evans yet?’ Peter asked as he joined us. ‘I will, soon’ James answered. ‘Where were you for the past hour Peter?’ Remus asked. Peter shrugged but didn’t answer him. ‘Zabini looks great in that dress’ he said, looking Alexandra over with the same predatory glance I’d seen on the train. I fought the urge to knock Peter’s teeth out. Why was it that Peter always got under my skin? Why on earth was he even looking at a girl that was obviously way out of his league?
As James had arranged, the slow song started, and I made my way to Lex. ‘Will you dance with me?’
I asked holding out my hand. She looked really surprised, but took it nonetheless. ‘aren’t you afraid about what your friends will have to say about this?’ she asked.
I placed my hands on her waist, and drew her close. ‘I couldn’t care less at the moment.’ I replied. Being shorter than me, she had to look up to meet my eyes. ‘I’m sorry I’ve been such a prat to you Lex.’ She looked away again ‘I got used to it, what changed that you don’t care anymore what they think?’ she asked, nodding her head at James, who was dancing with Lily. It was a fair question, I wasn’t sure if it was the punch talking of if this was Gryffindor courage, or maybe sheer stupidity. ‘Davy Gudeon.’ I said.
She looked up at me again. 'I don't understand.' she said frowning. For someone so intelligent, she was really stupid at times. 'I didn't like that he held you.' I answered her honestly. James was right about one thing, when she was in my arms, the monster that had been trying to claw its’ way our was at peace, it seemed as if there wasn’t a worry in the world.
