Zelda Prince looked at herself in the mirror that was in her bedroom. Her long shiny black hair was being pulled back by her personal house-elf and piled on top of her head in the latest fashion. She looked at her light purple eyes with a cold smile and pinched her cheeks, she was going in to town with her sister today. She looked down at her beautiful cream-colored dress and then back at her reflection in the mirror and then stood. She pushed the house-elf away from her claiming that she was good enough to be seen in public and then made her way down the stairs to her sister who was waiting by the front door.
“Finally” Zoey snapped as she looked at her sister with a roll of her eyes “All this for that goody-goody Marek Kinnocks?”
“He is the perfect man” Zelda answered as the carriage driver helped her up in to the carriage “He will be my husband and your brother-in-law so you better be nice”
“The only reason you consider him to be the “perfect man” is because he is the richest man in town” Zoey said “Nothing more”
“Who cares” Zelda said with a wave of her hand “Who should I marry, a poor soul that has “good intentions in life”?” She snorted meanly “I have worked too hard to look good to him to not be Mrs. Kinnocks”
“I am to chaperone your walk in the park” Zoey looked off already bored with her chore “Can we do anything interesting at least?”
“Of course not” Zelda answered with a snort “Mr. Kinnocks must think that I am the picture of perfect breeding”
“We are” Zoey snapped.
“He said he had to ask me something important” Zelda told her importantly “I think he’s going to ask me to marry him”
“Good” Zoey pouted as the carriage took off and brought them towards the park and Zelda’s future “Once you’re married and out of the house mother will look for a suitable match for me”
“Don’t put faith in her” Zelda sneered, their mother was a half-blood that seemed content with the girls finding their ‘true loves’ “She’ll just tell you to have faith in love or something stupid like that. I’ll find you someone suitable, I’ve already begun looking in fact”
“Found anyone yet?” Zoey asked eagerly.
“Not yet” Zelda answered “But if Zeke can find a match while at University then I’m sure that I can find someone for you while on my honeymoon, don’t worry too much”
They came to the park where numerous witches and wizards their age were walking with their fiancée’s, husbands or boyfriends. At eighteen, Zelda had been taught (by the tutors that her father had hired) that getting married was the most important thing that she could do for her family. She’d been paraded through many a party or ball before single men of all ages who all, thank merlin, were disgustingly wealthy. But when she met Marek Kinnocks she knew that marrying him would look good in the family line, in the family business and in the daily prophet as well. She, however, had done what most girls her age had already done and had sex so she’d know what to do on her wedding night. Marek, however, was a rich muggleborn man who preferred the old-fashioned type of women, which is to say a virginal bride that had never known a mans touch. Needless, to say, she had to completely lie about herself but that was fine with her.
Marek was a man of forty-three years and was not exactly the best to look at. He was at least thirty pounds overweight, thinning dark brown hair, boring brown eyes, a thick mustache and a tan that lasted all year. His money was what made him interesting to anyone in this world, his blood status was less than stellar, his looks were mediocre, his social skills were severely lacking and his personality varied from quiet and reserved to obsessive and creepy. He knew that if he married a pureblooded woman of her beauty and age he would be even more respected. But over the last seven months he’d learned to love the perfect young woman that Zelda Prince was. He saw her walking towards him with an innocent smile on her face and her hands folded in front of her. He walked over to her and took her hands as he walked her towards a beautiful little bridge that went over a little stream.
“I am sorry” He said looking at her hand clutched in his own “I didn’t mean to take your hand like that, without permission”
“Oh” Zelda faked a little, nervous girlish laugh “You startled me, that’s all. Are you well, Mr. Kinnocks you look...flushed”
“I fear that I am nervous, Miss Prince” He answered and Zelda heard her sister give a small snort from where she was standing a few feet away.
“You need not be nervous around me, Mr. Kinnocks” Zelda said, breathlessly.
“I” He looked at her again “You are very beautiful, Miss Prince”
“I thank you, sir” She said, looking coyly at her hands “But I am merely average looking”
“What I’m trying to say and I am not doing a very good job of it” He said nervously “Is...” He held out a box that held a gaudy and huge diamond ring in it “Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
“Oh Mr. Kinnocks!” Zelda exclaimed putting her hand over her heart as she examined the huge diamond greedily “I would be honored to be your wife!”
~~~One Month Later~~~
Zelda was walking through Diagon Alley thinking about her upcoming nuptials (they (she) decided a quick wedding would be perfect) when she bumped in to a man. She raised her eyes to find the perfect specimen of a man standing before her, his white-blonde hair was pulled back to the nape of his neck, his cold grey eyes looked at her appreciatively and his pale, pointed face was so obviously aristocratic.
“And who may you be?” He asked with a haughty smirk “Other than the captor of my heart”
“Zelda Prince” She answered coldly “And you?”
“Lucian Malfoy” He answered (Here Hermione was highly amused that they really did reuse names, it had been a joke between her Ginny and Ronald) “You are...” He looked at her and licked his lips “Completely beautiful”
“I know” She said.
“How come I’ve never heard of you before?” He asked “I thought I knew everyone, especially beautiful women”
“I was homeschooled” She answered “I fear I’ve never heard of you, either” She carefully and without his notice, removed her engagement ring “It was nice meeting you” She held out her now ring-less left hand for him to take but he surprised her and kissed it boldly.
“I hope to see you again” He said, clearly smitten with the young woman before him “May I call on you?”
“Of course” She answered “I look forward to seeing you again”
As the next few weeks went by Zelda learned a lot about Lucian Malfoy. The most important things were that he was rich, from the second oldest pureblooded wizarding family next to the Weasleys and his personality was so very alike to her own. She would wear her engagement ring whenever she was near Marek but when he was gone the ring was thrown carelessly in her jewelry box and forgotten. Lucian didn’t mind that she’d already had sex with someone because that was a pureblooded thing. He also agreed with her sarcasm, her views on purity and most important (almost as important as being rich and good looking) he was single.
“I could have Lucian Malfoy” Zoey said, as she pinched some color in to her cheeks and played with her hair “You’re already engaged to Marek”
“I don’t want Marek anymore” Zelda hissed “Why would I want an ugly old man when I could have Lucian Malfoy?” She pushed her breasts up so there was more cleavage “He’s only twenty-four, already got one of his inheritances thanks to his mothers early death, in line to take over the family business and when his dad dies he’s going to come in to even more money” She sighed and smiled at herself in the mirror “He is everything that I deserve. Why would I want to marry an ugly, old man who doesn’t have even half the fortune that a Malfoy does?”
“Because he loves you” Zoey offered up and glared at her sister. She was not like Zelda in the least, she wanted to be loved like her mother talked about all the time and she was jealous of her sister. Not of her beauty because she felt that she was even more beautiful than Zelda but she wanted the kind of love that Marek had for her. She thought that maybe she could steal him from her and then she’d have that love.
“Love” She scoffed “Don’t make me sick”
~~~Two Weeks After That~~~
Marek Kinnocks stormed up to Prince Manor and slammed his fist against the door a few times. A timid little house-elf opened it and he handed his calling card over saying very sternly that he wished to speak with Zelda. He didn’t want to believe what he’d seen, he even wished that he was going blind or crazy when he thought about those moments where he’d been walking through a potions store in Diagon Alley a week before. He saw the blonde-headed son-of-a-bitch Lucian Malfoy, the little prick has been getting groomed to be the next big boss for Malfoy Enterprises and he’d had a meeting with him earlier that week. He was entitled, greedy and whiny but because he was pureblooded he’ll get whatever he wants. The one thing Marek held on to was the fact that he had a beautiful, young and perfectly lovely fiancee that loved him too. That was until last week when he saw that little prick walking around Diagon Alley like he owned it with Marek’s young fiancée hanging on to his arm and his every word.
‘Makes you sick, don’t it?’ The shop-keeper had said as he’d followed Marek’s eyes ‘Not only is he rich, pureblooded and good looking but he gets the best looking pureblooded witch around’
‘What do you mean?’ Marek asked, his eyes narrowing and taking in the sight of an engagement ring, a ring with a huge diamond on it. His ring. Or so he thought.
‘Zelda Prince’ The man said with a shake of his head ‘A beauty that one. Lucian Malfoy snatched her up real quick, he did and they’re to be married in two weeks time...how did you not know about that, I thought it was common knowledge?”
“Apparently not” Marek said, there was a sickness filling his stomach and he knew that it had to have been a mistake, his perfect, sweet and virtuous Zelda Prince would never do this to him.
However, he put his ear to the ground as they say and learned that Zelda was indeed engaged to the young Malfoy and now all he had was the curiosity as to why she felt the need to break his heart. He loved her so much, he saw past the rumors of dark magic that hung around her family like a fog, he turned his head to the fact that her father was a monster that tortured muggles. He knew that she wasn’t her family...or at least he thought he knew that about her but she was proving him wrong. His only hope was that maybe her father was making her marry Malfoy, that she had no choice and then they could runaway together and get married anyway because he would take care of her and keep her safe.
“Marek” Zelda greeted from the top of the grand staircase, there was a cold indifference in her tone and his insides became chilled because she’d never used his first name before claiming that it was ‘improper’ as they weren’t married or family members.
“Miss Prince” He said in a pleading tone “Tell me that it’s not true”
“Tell you what isn’t true, Marek?” She asked, narrowing her eyes as she reached the bottom of the stairs.
“You and Lucian Malfoy” He whispered “Getting married”
“It is true” She smirked.
“Your father” He said “He’s making you, isn’t he?”
“My father?” She laughed and the coldness echoed back to them, he looked towards the sitting room and saw a wisp of blonde hair flit around the corner before big blue eyes peered around the corner “My father doesn’t care!”
“Then why?” He asked.
“Why would I want an unattractive, old man when I could have a man like Lucian Malfoy?” She asked “Oh it was easy enough to attract you, pretending to be something I am not, the virtuous and pious young woman that was positively head over heels for you” Her laughter once again echoed back to them.
“But I love you” He whispered more to himself than to her.
“But I never loved you” Zelda hissed “I loved your money and status and he has more. With him I don’t have to pretend, I can be myself and he likes it...to be perfectly honest, I was likely to do something to make sure that you were out of the way and I got your money... see, it’s best for both of us”
“Zelda...” He whispered, he wanted to wake up but knew that would never happen. He’d lost her, his magic boiled up inside of him like bile and it sizzled through his veins, he wanted to kill her, to hurt her...to make sure that she and anyone else in her low life, disgusting, pureblooded family felt as he felt at that moment. His wand, hidden away in his pocket, was held tightly in his hand as he spoke slowly to her.
“You are cruel and heartless” He said “To punish you would be far too easy. I will punish your family, from here on out any child born to the Prince line will be as ugly on the outside as you are on the inside” Zelda wanted to laugh but the terrifying chill that ran throughout her veins was just that, terrifying “And only when a direct descendant of yours is able to attract someone to love them, in their current hideous state, as I have loved you will the curse lift”
Zelda had been terrified but went on with her life as she’d planned. Marrying Lucian one week after Marek’s visit and then spending the next two years traveling the world and getting whatever her heart desired. All the while Marek’s curse weighed heavily on her mind, she didn’t think it was possible though, her entire family had always been very good looking so surely nothing could go wrong. Though Zoey went after Marek and tried to convince him that she really was what her sister pretended to be, he accused her of being just as underhanded, cruel and sneaky as Zelda was and pushed her away from him. Not only was there a curse put upon the family but that was the very day that Zoey’s heart became completely frozen. She learned that she would never, no matter how far away her sister went, get out from the shadow being a Prince cast her in. Zoey finally became what she had never wanted to be before, her sister.
Zelda had been terrified when her brother had his first child. Her nephew had been a homely looking thing, dark slightly vacant eyes, big crooked nose and his body was sickly thin. Her sister first child was a female and a more sickly looking thing couldn’t have been found, she worried about her child when she became pregnant. When she ended up with a (in her opinion) horribly disfigured son the Malfoy’s stopped their tradition of an ‘heir and a spare’ and decided that only one horribly hideous child was enough. The years went on, the generation got more and more hideous and with the ugliness on the outside there was an ugliness that grew on the inside. It appeared that each new generation got colder, meaner, more sarcastic and the thought of the curse becoming broken grew less and less likely.
“Severus” Hermione said causing him to look at her impatiently “What happened to Marek?”
“He was heartbroken and hurt” He answered “He never married, he lived in his manor alone and died there alone, it took three weeks for someone to notice that he’d been missing”
“And his line?” She asked “I mean if there is a Kinnocks still around you could always ask them to lift the curse, if there really is one”
“He was the last of his line” Severus answered with a shrug “If there is a curse than we’ll have to lift it ourselves...” His face turned slightly red “We as in the Prince line and not you and...me”
“I pieced that together myself” Hermione said with a small smile.
A/N: I hope that you like this. I was just going to talk about what the curse was and leave it at that however, I got the idea that maybe a look at Zelda’s life would be interesting. Tell me what you think. Please Review!!!!
