“This is already a bust.” Susan Bones angrily kicked at an empty box. They'd been searching for hours and still no herbs. They were running dangerously low on potions and their meager hospital area was constantly full of wounded or magically ailing people.
Hermione swallowed the lump in her throat. “There has to be something.” She said as firmly as she could. “There has to.”
“It's hopeless, Hermione.” Susan said in a huff. “We should go with Seamus’ plan to-”
“It's too dangerous!” The shorter witch hissed. “We all agreed going to Diagon Alley was too dangerous. Not to mention expensive.”
“Then we break in.” Susan crossed her arms, igniting a look of shock on her partner’s face. “I didn't say it at the meeting but we're desperate at this point. Harry has that cloak-”
“I'm not listening to this.” Hermione turned towards the door of the broken down house. The little French wizarding town had been sacked by Death Eaters months before, but some of the Order’s French allies had been certain there were hidden supplies still there.
Warning bells niggled at the back of Hermione’s brain and she abruptly turned on her partner.
“Why is there nothing here?” She asked suddenly, and Susan threw up her hands.
“Scavengers before us?” She said flippantly, but then froze, realization dawning on her face. “Unless-” There was a crack outside and both of them turned, wands in hand.
It was a setup.
Hermione deliberated over sending a Patronus but didn't want the silvery otter to give away their location. They weren't at the agreed house, as having found nothing there they'd decided to search the rest of the town. So they were hidden for now.
“Anti-apparition ward.” Susan hissed as she silently cast diagnostic charms. Hermione peered carefully out the window into the dim moonlit main street.
“Six that I can see.” Her heart raced at the dark cloaks of the people outside, clearly dark wizards.
“Nine total.” Susan completed her charms, and cast a disillusionment over them both. “Three Death Eaters, the rest lackeys.”
“Is there a back door?” The shorter witch breathed the words.
“Caved in.” Her partner shook her head. “Only way out is the front.”
“They're staking out the street while searching buildings.” Hermione pulled away from the window. “We need to split up. You go east, I'll go west, apparate as soon as you get past the ward. Don't go to the France safe house, it might be compromised.”
“Hermione…” Susan’s eyes were worried.
“There's a better chance of one of us making it if we split.” Hermione whispered firmly. “We have to alert the Order that we've been set up. If it looks like you won't make it, send a Patronus. Our priority is getting the information to Harry.”
“Okay.” Susan let out a deep breath. They crept to the door and silently opened it, crouching on the porch. Hermione took her hand and squeezed it, not wanting to take the chance of speaking. Her partner squeezed back and they ducked their separate ways.
Hermione made it around the back of the next building and down an alleyway when she heard a screech and saw a silvery animal flit across the sky.
She gripped her wand tightly. At least Harry would know.
She didn't even have time to react before a flash of red hit her square in the chest.

Hermione shivered, not knowing how long she’d been asleep. Her hands were bound behind her, and she couldn't see a thing.
“Hello?” She whispered, feeling stupid. But if she was a prisoner then maybe she was with other prisoners.
No answer. And her voice didn't echo. So it was a small room. She shakily got to her knees and started to shuffle along the wall, until she hit a corner.
After doing this three more times, she had mapped out that she was in a square room about seven by seven feet. With no doors or windows. Which meant it was either a hole or the door had been magicked away from the outside.
She tried to remember being brought there but all she could recall was splitting up with Susan and then some hazy dreams that she couldn't quite grasp at.
There was a metallic creak and a sliver of light appeared above her. She squinted as it grew bigger until her eyes adjusted to a square opening in the ceiling.
Her blood ran cold at the sight of a Death Eater mask in the bright light. She heard a guttural chuckle and fought the urge to scream.
The Death Eater raised their wand and pointed it at her.
“Stupefy.”
