Chapter 4: Prefects Are Not Perfect
Nobody worked as hard as Lucius Malfoy. He cultivated an image of elegance, principles, and loyalty that others sought to emulate and garnered the respect of several faculty members. In offering an alternative to the atypical Slytherin image--that of dark wizards interested in blood purity, he helped to challenge existing views and as a result developed a reputation was so solid that in spite of his own father's implication in the scandal leading up to the muggle born Prime Minister resigning others still considered him to be a paragon of virtue.
This skill of his was something that endeared him to faculty and student alike. Hence he never saw a shortage of friends and had received several confessions from not only the girls within his own house but others. 'Those Knights are always wanting to meet you Lucius,' Evan Rossier rotated his wrist in an effort to relax, 'I hope you could come with me to attend one of their meetings.'
Lucius did not look up from the newspaper he was reading, and ignored the invitation, Why don't you tell me something useful, such as apologizing for your embarassing behavior aboard the train this morning.'
Rossier perked up and gave his friend a sunny smile, 'I only wanted to teach the second year a lesson in respecting ones seniors. You don't lecture that Black girl for torturing that mudblood so badly she took her own life.'
Lucius felt his friend sounded like a petulant child 'I don't care what you choose to do but 'that Black girl' was smart enough to not get caught. Tell me who knows besides her own sisters and a handful of Griffindors, none of who have a reputation for anything but rule breaking. But what about you Rossier? When you disregard the rules in front of faculty there is very little I can do.'
Rossier threw a book at him but the other dodged it, a small smile on his face, 'How exhausting it must be to always be right,' He sneered, 'And I suppose next you're going to lecture me on the principles of peace love and happiness.'
This caused Lucius to laugh quietly, his long hair tumbling backwards as he turned his face sideways to meet the mocking gaze of his best friend, 'I don't suppose you want me to do a song and dance too?'
Rossier kicked the other's chair, 'Outside of being an expert coward, what would you have done Lucius?'
Laughter dying, a heavy silence fell and Lucius began folding the newspaper and stared at his hands as he did this, and for the fist time that evening Rossier felt uneasy, as if he had crossed some sort of invisible line.
'.....I wouldn't have let myself get caught. Tell me, have you ever felt that the majority leans in your favor?' Rossier was silent, 'If McGonagall had not intervened I think you may have actually harmed that brat, and perhaps that may have led to expulsion. The current headmaster is extremely warped, constantly extolling the equality of all and other nonsense. He would have made an example of you and expelled you, and what then? How can you be of service to anyone or anything if you have that on your record?'
Rossier glarred sullenly at the floor, 'So you want me to play nice?'
'Not at all. I just think that you should be more mindful of the consequences, and perhaps make sure that there are no witnesses. There are so many hidden alcoves, so many unused classrooms. If someone meets with an accident, well....' He trailed off, and felt a nasty smile split his face.
'I don't want to sneak around like some sort of criminal,' Rossier muttered.
Malfoy agreed with him but he also thought he wasn't seeing the full picture. 'I think that we are on the edge of a great reformation, and it won't always be this way. But then what do I know. I'm just a coward.'
Rossier knew when he had erred, and he also knew when Lucius was furious. He thought of the Ravenclaw during their third year, and shivered. Lucius could be patient, and although he wasn't easy to anger, he was a vindictive fuck, 'Fine, fine I'm sorry. I was taking my anger out on you. Forgive me?'
A look of exagerated contrition appeared on his face, and just like that Lucius let it go, ideciding it wasn't worth his time. Instead changing the subject, 'What time is it?'
'A little before ten. Going to go patrol the halls? Take away some points?' He leaned in, 'Let me know how those boots taste,'
One of these days Rossier's mouth was going to lead him into trouble; but he didn't think it was his job to impart unwanted advice.
Lucius made a rude gesture towards him, 'At least I don't have detention for the next three days.'
'Oh fuck you.'
Lucius quietly left the Slytherin common room and began his patrol. They rotated their routes and tonight he was watching the entryway and inspecting the outside of the castle. It was one of the more dull routes that saw him walking up and down the hall, through the cafeteria and around the perimeter of the building. Fortunately the weather was not bad, and so he did not mind it so much.
He heard the distinctive sound of feminine laughter as he walked around the North side of the castle. From a distance he spied the distinct figure of a woman. It took a few minutes for his eyes to adjust before he could recognize the unmistakable form of Andromeda Black.
The Slytherin was--for lack of a better word--fucking Malcolm McGonagall, the Griffindor Quidditch player as if he were about to die. Lucius was not exactly shocked to see the two together but he felt a certain level of disgust at the sight. Didn't she have any pride as a woman?
Disgusted, he immediately turned to go but was stopped suddenly by an arm on his sleeve. Turning suddenly he saw, with some surprise, Narcissa Black. Distracted by the couple, she must have snuck up from behind one of the trees lining the side of the castle.
The normally reserved young woman looked terribly embarassed.
'I came to be the lookout, she doesn't know that--
He raised a hand, silencing her, and tried to think of how to remove himself from a situation that was now an inconvenient problem.
Hoping to disarm her with sarcarsm while he thought of a solution, he asked 'You're a voyeur?'
It was intended to be a joke but his tone suggested otherwise, and he immediately regretted his poor choice of words. It wasn't that he cared about how she felt, it was simply tactless.
She immediately became flushed and turned away. She was fidgeting and after a few moments finally explained 'My sister has been in a lot of trouble with my mother, and you know what my family is like. They don't like people in relationships with outsiders, and my sister is the kind of person who would do anything to make them angry. Please don't tell.'
Lucius crossed his arms as mild irritation washed over him. She wasn't exaggerating. But he didn't really want to involve himself in her family matters so he decided to leave this mess. It wasn't like he stood to gain anything from interfering, and he certainly didn't want to see what Malcolm McGonagall looked like without any clothes on. Initially he had not planned on doing anything but now that he had been seen by another party he felt obligated to report them.
'Rules are the rules. They will each be written up for breaking curfew.' He pulled out a whistle, a tool to signalling others, but was unable to do anything with it as Narcissa snatched it out of his hand and threw it somewhere far away.
For a moment he stared at his empty hand in mild shock then at her for her bold, and quite frankly, incredibly annoying action. Now he would have to locate his whistle.
'That was extraordinarily unnecessary,' He said, wanting to know if she had temporarily lost her mind.
'Unnecessary my ass! How can you be so cruel?' She hissed.
The noises stopped--it seemed that while they argued the subjects of their conversation had managed to make their escape leaving Lucius alone with Narcissa. Undoubtedly it was the sound of their voices that had alterted the other two, giving them plenty of time to run off.
'Well it seems that they have absconded. Which means that all I can do is punish you for breaking curfew. Five points from Slytherin and a warning. He paused, 'And five points for throwing my whistle,' He muttered.
Narcissa felt her my mouth open and close. She wasn't sure if he had helped her or not, but she knew she had not been completely truthful with Lucius. It wasn't her mother who she feared....it was her other sister.
So we see diffrent facets of Lucius Malfoy as he interacts with friends and other students. Did he do her a favor or was he simply choosing the path of least resistance?
