Chapter 5
The rest of the summer went by in the same cruel manner, except they started giving Harry leftover soup when they’re feeling generous since the constant choking had ruined his throat to the point where he couldn’t swallow solid food. When August 31st rolled around, Uncle Vernon reluctantly let him out of the cupboard and back into his room upstairs so he could pack what little he had. The thought of finally leaving the Dursleys made Harry unable to stop grinning, which earned him another punch from Dudley.
The next morning, at around 9 AM, Harry was happily pushing his luggage in King’s cross station, leisurely walking towards the barrier. The relief he felt when he was roughly pushed out of Uncle Vernon’s car still hadn't left him.
“Harry!”
Harry turned to look at the Weasleys, all of whom were running towards him, trying to be the first to hug him, ignoring the strange looks they were getting from the Muggles around them. Mrs Weasley hugged him especially tight, her own eyes watering as she ruffled Harry’s hair, making them impossibly messier.
Harry was as horrified as Ron when they tried to run through the barrier and couldn’t, crashing violently into the hard brick wall. Harry felt his heart sink as he rubbed the wall, trying to find out why the barrier had suddenly closed. If he missed the train would he have to go back to the Dursleys? He was pulled out of his thoughts when Ron shook his shoulders, beaming.
“The car! We can fly the car to Hogwarts!”
In an instant, Harry’s feeling of panic turned into excitement. They quickly gathered their things - and calmed the screeching Hedwig - and went out to the parked car, stuffing their luggage into the cavernous trunk. After checking to make sure the coast was clear, Ron pressed a small button on the dashboard, and Harry watched in amazement as the car - and themselves - slowly vanished. In seconds, they were up in the air, the buildings around them getting smaller and smaller.
Harry hadn’t felt this excited in months.
Harry felt his fear resurfacing as they sat in Snape’s cold, gloomy office. They had made a rather… rough landing and had missed the Great Feast, getting caught by Snape instead.
Snape’s eyes were dark and unforgiving as he read to them the newspaper article about some Muggles spotting their flying car. Harry didn’t even notice how his own hands were trembling when Snape mentioned expulsion and left to fetch McGonagall. Ten minutes later, he returned with McGonagall and Dumbledore in tow, both looking extremely grave.
Ron explained how the barrier was closed - Harry tried but found that his voice wouldn’t cooperate - and why they had to take the car. Dumbledore turned to him, but Harry couldn’t look him in the eyes and instead stared at his knees in silence. He released a breath he didn’t know he was holding when Dumbledore informed them that they weren’t going to be expelled. Snape frowned and left together with Dumbledore, leaving McGonagall alone with them, who - after giving them a piercing look - had summoned a plate of sandwiches and a jug of cold pumpkin juice, instructing them to eat their dinner here before going up to the tower.
The whole thing went better than Harry had expected; he was so happy he didn’t have to go back to the Dursleys. He took a sandwich and nibbled at it, but found it painful to swallow, so he contented himself with drinking as much pumpkin juice as he could, relishing the feeling of the cold liquid going down his throat, and watched Ron eat animatedly.
“Harry, you have to go see Madam Pomfrey or Dumbledore about it!” Hermione said, exasperated, pacing around them in Gryffindor’s common room.
Harry set aside the new books Ron and Hermione had gotten him - he promised he would pay them back later - and sighed, “Mione, really, it’s okay. I don’t want people to know about this. I don’t want Malfoy to know about this.”
“But-”
“Please?”
Hermione stared at those adamant green eyes and gave in with a sigh, running a hand through her hair. Harry was a stubborn boy, and once he had decided on something, there was nothing she could do to persuade him otherwise.
Harry had managed to hide all his bruises and wounds with a simple glamour, but he still couldn’t fix his throat and he knew, from previous experience, that if he went to Madam Pomfrey, soon everyone will know what had happened to him, and he doesn’t like people giving him pity. Plus, Malfoy - or Snape - would take advantage of it to make fun of him every chance he gets. He would rather just deal with the sore throat and raspy voice and be thought of as weird rather than having everybody know about his abuse.
“Fine,” Hermione plopped down next to them. Harry and Ron exchanged grins with each other before they started talking about other, more pleasant things.
Harry didn’t know what was wrong with Snape. He had tried to avoid him like last year, but he seemed to be encountering Snape more often than usual. He was sure Snape was somehow following him, but whenever they met, he didn’t even spare Harry a glance, making him second-guess himself.
One day when the weather was wet and dark, Harry had forgotten his wand back in the dorms and after telling Ron and Hermione to go ahead to their Transfiguration class, he ran back to Gryffindor tower, panicking. Even if Professor McGonagall was the head of Gryffindor House, she was still incredibly strict and would take points off Harry for being late. After ransacking his bed, Harry tucked his wand into his robes and ran to the class, bumping into someone in his hurry.
It was Snape.
His breath hitched when Harry realized whom he had just run into. He instinctively slinked away and flattened himself against the wall, looking up to the dark eyes in alarm. There was a flicker of emotion in those eyes before Snape regained his composure and straightened himself.
“5 points from Gryffindor for running in the hallway, Potter,” he said. “And it’s rude to not apologize after bumping into someone.”
“I-I’m sorry-” Harry said, not meeting Snape’s eyes, which narrowed when he heard Harry’s hoarse voice.
“Potter, what’s wrong with your voice?” Snape asked, putting a hand on Harry’s shoulder.
Harry tensed up and his hands went up to shield his face immediately, his trembling body curling into itself, his eyes staring at Snape in horror. Snape stepped back in surprise. He hadn’t expected that reaction at all.
“Potter, what-”
“I-I’m sorry for bumping into you,” Harry whispered, still looking at Snape with terror in his eyes.
Snape frowned. Something was wrong with the boy. “Never mind that, Potter-”
Harry suddenly realized what he was doing and quickly stood straight, trying hard to stop his hands from trembling. “I-I’ve got to go to class-”
“No, you’re not,” Snape caught Harry’s arm. “Not until you explain yourself.”
Harry winced in pain and tried to glare at Snape unsuccessfully, “I’m fine sir. I’m late for Transfigurations!”
Snape didn’t let go of his arm. Instead, he went with Harry to class, knocking rapidly three times on the door before going in. McGonagall stopped whatever she was saying and looked at Snape and Harry, puzzled.
“What’s wrong, Professor Snape?”
“I’m sorry, Professor McGonagall, but I’m going to have to borrow Potter here for a while,”
Harry’s eyebrow shot up and he saw Hermione and Ron watching him with worried eyes.
“Very well, Professor, you may take him,” McGonagall said after a while. Snape nodded curtly at her and turned to leave, gesturing for Harry to follow him. Harry gave one last desperate look at his friends and went to follow Snape.
What’s going on? What’s Snape going to do to him?
