It appeared that the woods were set up intermittently across the landscape. They had to hide in the trees and look around until they were sure that there was no one keeping watch over the area and then would make a run for the next set of woods. Hours after they started away from the lake, they were hungry, and Donovan showed them a skill he’d picked up in boy scouts, which was fishing. Draco turned up his nose to the fish at lunch but at dinner he ate three, which they cooked over an open flame. They agreed that a fire during the day would be fine, but one at night was entirely too risky, Hermione was almost positive that whoever tried to kill them would probably keep checking out the area. Draco surmised that they would do this at night because it would look suspicious if someone saw them during the day and they would likely have to keep up appearances by going to work.
“I don’t really understand why they’d continue to look for you after already assuming you were dead” Donovan said, on day two of their adventure to the school “Why give themselves the extra work?”
“Because they know Hermione Granger” Draco answered “They’ll know that she is smart and resourceful and that It'll take a lot to kill her” He looked at her for a moment “They would also know that she wouldn’t leave someone behind, even if that someone was me or someone she didn’t know, like you”
“He’s right” Hermione sighed, Donovan lifted her over a rock and smiled at her. She was confused as to how someone could look at her with any amount of flirtation at a time like this.
“What about Potter and Weasley?” Draco asked, he looked at Hermione in surprise “Why haven’t they been out here yet?”
“I don’t know” Hermione sighed “Unless, someone is keeping this from the Prophet”
“Or worked for the Prophet” Draco muttered, they shared a look that screamed ‘Rita Skeeter’ and both smirked at one another.
Donovan didn’t even bother to ask what they were talking about. They finished their lunch and started on the newest batch of woods, Hermione looked at the sky and mentally calculated how much longer they had before it got too dark to see. They ran through a clearing and stood in the base of the trees looking around for some indication as to where they were. They were sticking relatively close to the tracks, follow them and they were sure they’d find a magical town, then the dead zone and the restrictions on their magic would be lifted. The plan was to get to a magical town, send a patronis to McGonagall explaining what happened and if she could open the Floo network or send someone to meet them at the gate. It wouldn’t be wise to just apparate to Hogsmead, especially if someone was looking for them. After making sure that the tracks were still nearby, the three went back into the trees and continued their journey.
“You know” Draco said, as he helped Hermione down over a fallen log “It could be Rita Skeeter, I mean she hates you for whatever you did to her during fourth year, and she spent a rather disturbing amount of time and probably money trying to get me thrown into Azkaban just to have it blow up in her face” He looked over at her as they walked “And if Potter and Weasley aren’t out here looking for you, then that means they think you’re buried under a stack of books and are too busy to write to them...that means there’s been no mention of it in the paper, she could have that information held back”
“Or maybe” Donovan said as they found a spot near a freshwater river and looked around for the best place to set up their camp “Your friends are mourning you”
“You don’t know Potter and Weasley” Draco said with a grim look on his face.
“I hate to say it” Hermione sighed, as she dragged some undergrowth away from where they were going to be sleeping “But Malfoy’s right, Harry and Ron would never just accept that I’m dead and couldn’t be found, they would search until they either found my body or found me alive”
“They also would never accept she died without proof” Draco started.
“Which is literally just what I said” Hermione said with an eyeroll.
“They know” He continued, glaring over at her “That Granger is highly intelligent with an amazing ability to save herself and anyone else who may be around”
“So, it’s either a very good thing that we’re with her” Donovan said, as he scanned the water for fish “Or really bad” When he noted Draco’s look of confusion he added “Either people are looking to save us or kill us”
“That’s the high side and the low side of being my friend” Hermione grinned.
It was hours after the sun went down, all three of them were full and attempting to sleep, but from the breathing patterns around her, Hermione could tell that the boys were still awake as well. Hermione watched the sky, it was a clear night, and it made her sigh, if she’d been at the school, she’d likely be on the astronomy tower mapping the stars. Harry and Ron thought that she disliked astronomy and divination, but that wasn’t true. Hermione hated divination that was true, but the astronomy class had been one of her favorites and whenever she had down time, she always found herself looking to the stars. Wondering if her soulmate, the person she’d thought Ronald had been, was out there looking at the same stars thinking about her. It was stupid and sentimental to think this way, but at University, they had a divination-witch that came to one of her classes and did readings for them all. Ginny Weasley had pushed until Hermione gave in and got a reading with her. The woman had better credentials than professor Trelawny and a better following, Hermione was still skeptical, even as she laid there on the forest floor, but the woman was good.
Madame Lai told Ginny that the love she’d always felt for one man was not true. That there was a man she’d overlooked in the past that was her true soulmate, that he would make one more attempt but no more than that and if she rejected him, she would live without love for the rest of her life. Not two days later, Blaise Zabini, a Slytherin who used to flirt with her non-stop before Voldemort came back, asked her to dinner and she said yes. Now, two years later, they were getting married in just three months, Ginny was blissfully happy, and Harry was blissfully making his way through the cute, overly happy witches that thought he was the bees-knees. They had been good together once upon a time, but that time was gone, and Hermione was happy for them both. Madame Lai told Hermione that she needed to lift her eyes from the books and look around, that while her soul mate wasn’t around at that particular moment, he would be, but if she continued to study too much she’d miss him. The witch told her that her soul mate would often stare at the night skies and wonder if the woman that was meant for him, was looking at them too. Hermione sighed and looked over at the boys, Donovan was making little swirls with his wand in the air and Draco was staring at the sky in boredom.
“Let’s just pack it up and start walking” Hermione said, she sat up and grabbed her beaded bag.
“No” Donovan said, he sat up and looked at her “We’re supposed to be resting” He looked over at Draco who seemed to be thinking about what she’d said.
“We stopped to sleep” Hermione said “But none of us are sleeping, so let’s walk. We can travel as far as we can tonight and rest when we need to, but in all honesty, I want to get to the school before the Halloween feast”
“She’s right” Draco said “I’m not tired, you don’t appear to be either, so let’s cover some more ground”
Donovan appeared to be annoyed, but he followed them quietly. Draco was walking behind him, his mind was going over the facts that were laying out in front of him. Someone tried to kill him or Hermione, that person knew they were going to be on the train going back to Hogwarts. This person knew that they’d be at the front, and they thought to make sure that children weren’t hurt. That also brought up the thought of why none of the kids had said anything about the train accident, why hadn’t they? Why hadn’t the ministry shown up to look for Hermione Granger, one of the people responsible for saving the wizarding world? If she was missing or presumed dead, they would look for a body, she would be priority number one.
Draco looked over at Donovan again, he understood why the American had wanted to get a fire going the first night, he didn’t fully understand the amount of enemies the two Brits had. But he’d wanted to walk in the open more than in the woods, claiming he had allergies, something easily fixed with magic. The blonde narrowed his eyes at the man he barely knew, he walked over to Hermione and clasped his hand around her upper arm. She looked over at him, getting ready to say something to him about the manhandling, but his eyes locked with hers.
“We need to talk about Donovan” Draco breathed “I don’t trust him, do you?”
“Yes” Hermione said.
“Of course you do” He muttered “Why haven’t the kids said anything about the accident, surely McGonagall would have come to find us by now”
“They didn’t see...” Hermione trailed off, she thought back to when Donovan joined her in the compartment and looked at the blonde “He said that at least twenty other compartments saw him...they’d have known there was at least one adult on the train, they would all know where he sat” Both Draco and Hermione looked at Donovan, both with curious and mistrusting expressions.
