The Proposition
It was almost Christmas and at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry preparations for the festive season were in full swing. The Great Hall had been decorated with a dozen fir trees which reaching right up to the ceiling, or at any rate to where the ceiling would have been if it weren't for the illusion of a deep blue sky filled with stars. The trees, which had been brought from the edge of the Forbidden Forest by Hagrid, were now covered in decorations of all kinds. Professor Filius Flitwick was bouncing around the room in delight, streams of pink stars and golden bubbles shooting from the end of his wand as he arranged everything just so. This year he was being helped by a striking woman in midnight blue robes, which seemed to reflect the light, her height emphasised by the diminutive size of Professor Flitwick. When the trees were finally arranged to his satisfaction the tiny Charms professor took a step back to admire his handiwork.
"There Arabella, what do you think? Just the fairies to add now hey?" he remarked.
=It's wonderful. What about decorating some of the common rooms, Filius? After all we seem to have a record number of students staying this year, = she suggested.
"Ah yes," he sighed. "Some of the parents feel that their children are simply safer with us than at home. A sign of the times I'm afraid. It happened last time too, do you remember?"
=I only stayed here once, two years before I graduated. I didn't really understand at the time. Remus often stayed anyway, especially if there was a full moon over Christmas, and James was staying because he had nowhere else to go. His parents were away somewhere working for Dumbledore, and mum and dad said they thought we should stay to keep him company. Of course if we were all staying then Sirius and Lily both would. Siri organized kitchen raids amongst the students who were left and James and Lily started an impromptu Quidditch match come snowball fight on Christmas morning. All in all it was a lot of fun, = she recalled. =We need to make sure the kids who are staying this year remember it as well as I do, especially the younger ones. =
"You're right. We'll decorate all the common rooms and the staff room too. All the staff are staying for at least part of the holidays," Filius agreed. "A Christmas to remember!"
Arabella shivered.
"Bella, my dear, are you all right?" asked Flitwick.
=Yeah, I guess. Sorry, it's just -= she shook her head. ="Sorry, for a minute there I couldn't help thinking -=
"What?"
=Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die! = She gave an uneasy smile. =Sorry, I'm being silly. There goes the mood! =
The Charms professor looked uncharacteristically solemn for a moment, "You're not the only one to whom that thought has occurred." He looked around to make sure there were no students within earshot and then continued, "Molly Weasley is having Ron come home this Christmas - she's managed to get Bill, Charlie and Percy to go home too. She says with seven children, all wanting to get involved in the fight against You-Know-Who, it may be the last chance she ever gets."
Arabella shook her head miserably. =What's happening to Harry? I assume Albus refused to let him leave the school. =
"He's not happy but I think he understands Molly's reasons better than Ron does. I know Ron wanted to argue but Harry talked him out of it."
=Damn Voldemort anyway. It's Christmas, people should be having fun, not looking at their friends and wondering which ones aren't going to be around in a year's time. I understand why Albus has decided to continue the tradition of the Yule Ball he started last year. Come on; we'll do the common rooms tomorrow. I need a drink to cheer me up. Let's go up to the staff room and see who's off-duty and head to the Three Broomsticks. If we start now I might just have time to drink enough that I won't even remember this conversation tomorrow! =
By half past ten that evening the group had dwindled from almost every off-duty member of the faculty to Arabella, Filius, Severus, Remus and Megan Sinistra. They had managed to find a table located right at the back of the Three Broomsticks, well away from prying eyes. Madam Rosmerta kept them supplied with drinks and food all evening. The mood had gone from sombre (when Bella and Filius had explained why they needed a drink) through silly (as the alcohol had started to take effect) to mellow (due to good food, good drink, and good company). Now as the evening drew to a close the five were content to quietly sit and enjoy each other's company without the need to hide behind the masks they wore in public, either because of the necessity to be seen as role models for the students or for other darker reasons.
As Rosmerta rang the bell for last orders Megan rose, a trifle unsteadily, "I have to be getting back. I'm supposed to be on duty tomorrow morning. Urgh, last day of term and the day of the Yule Ball. Just what I need to deal with while hung over - three hundred excited, shrieking children!"
"I've got some Clear-Head Potion in my classroom, Megan," said Snape. "2nd shelf, on the left. It's clearly labelled. Grab a bottle tonight when you get back, and follow the instructions carefully, you remember what happened to Minerva last week!"
"You are a lifesaver my friend," Megan replied, laughing at the memory of the normally staid Transfiguration professor bouncing off the walls like a five year old on a sugar high.
Professor Flitwick looked at the three teachers left at the table and then after the departing figure of Professor Sinistra, "You know, it's probably not safe for you to walk back on your own, my dear. I'd be delighted to escort you home," he said jumping to his feet, and swaying a little. "See you tomorrow."
As he hurried after the Astronomy professor Bella looked after him and then shook hr head. =Was he flirting with her? Or am I drunker than I thought? = she asked.
"No, I think he was flirting," Remus said still staring in the direction that they had gone.
"Definitely. And he wasn't the only one," smirked Snape. He looked at the confused faces of his companions. "Oh come on, you're not telling me that you missed the looks she was giving him all evening?" When they continued to stare blankly he shook his head and stood up. "Clearly I am the only one here with any knowledge of the fine art of seduction!"
Remus and Bella looked at each other speechlessly for a moment before chasing after him as he strode past the landlady, who was by now clearing the empty tables and none too subtly hinting that it was time to leave.
They caught up with him as he exited the pub."Fine art of seduction? You? Oh this I'd love to see!" Remus scoffed as Arabella signed =Well I know a certain seductive Slytherin who's going to be sleeping alone tonight unless I get an apology! =
Severus laughed and slipped his arm around her waist. "Come on let's continue this conversation back in my rooms, I think I've got a bottle of whiskey somewhere."
Ten minutes later Remus was sprawled cat-like across the couch in Severus' quarters and Bella was curled up in an armchair, while Snape himself was pouring them all drinks.
"So tell me more about your famed seductive powers then?" Remus said, and then jumped as Severus leant over the back of the couch and put his hand on Lupin's shoulder. He relaxed as he realised that Snape was just passing him his drink and then froze again as Severus purred into his ear, "You really shouldn't ask questions that you don't want answered."
Remus shivered, *that voice should be registered as a dangerous weapon. * He quickly glanced across at Arabella to see what her reaction was. Seeing that she didn't seem bothered by her lover's actions Remus decided to up the stakes in this game a little. He turned his head and leant back a little so that he could now speak into Severus' ear. "You should know better than to tease a wolf," he growled. He was pleased to see Snape shiver as he had done only moments ago, but he wasn't given a chance to dwell on that thought as Severus turned his head and captured Remus' lips with his own. This was no gentle, seductive kiss, this was a challenge. His tongue invaded Remus' mouth, tangling with his own and tasting every part of his mouth in a gesture of domination that awoke the predator inside of Remus. He kissed Severus back with an equal amount of passion, tasting victory when Severus moaned into the kiss before abruptly pulling away and leaning Remus stunned. Severus smirked and slid one hand gently down the front of Remus' shirt and across the bulge in his jeans.
"I wasn't teasing!" he said. Before Lupin could gather his wits around him to reply Bella came across and knelt in front of him, taking his glass from him before he could spill it.
=We've been watching you Remy, you're lonely. You have few close friends, and those you do have can't always be there for you - Harry's a child, Sirius is away so much. But we can help, we care for you and it hurts to see you so alone. =
"We both care," Snape, continued. "We can be there for you when you need us. We'll never turn you away."
=Let us love you, Remy. You won't regret it, I promise. =
Remus looked from one to the other, unable to believe what he was hearing.
"Don't say anything right now, Remus. Go back to your room and think it over, we'll be right here when you're ready." Severus said, helping him to his feet and offering him the jar of Floo Powder. He stroked the fingers of one hand gently down the centre of the werewolf's back as Bella leaned in and kissed him.
=Good Night, Remus. =
"Sweet dreams."
