Family Matters
Natalie kept Severus at bay with stiff arms, hissing at him. “Better to keep a friendly distance.” She warned, a polite smile plastered on her face. “Protect yourself from Nicholas at all costs, Severus.” She stared straight into his eyes attempting to convey all she felt with one meaningful look.
Severus grimaced, a curt nod signaled his agreement as they gracefully swirled around the small dance floor. Nicholas’ eyes never left his sister and her partner. They glittered in great interest, moving along with her graceful motions across the hard wood floor of the Inn. The song ended. Snape captured Natalie’s hand in his before bowing politely. They returned to the table where the party was breaking up. They were joined by Albus and Minerva for the walk back to Hogwarts.
Once out of sight of Hogsmeade, Natalie pulled Severus close to her by his arm. She caught the Headmaster’s eye before smiling wickedly then side-along apparated a stunned Professor in the blink of his obsidian eye. Their apparition reverberated throughout the valley with a horrendously loud crack. Albus glanced knowingly at Minerva. “I think I shall have to have someone cover their classes tomorrow.” He chuckled. Minerva clucked disapprovingly.
The seemingly interminable sensation of being turned completely inside over and over again finally relented. Snape found himself unsteadily standing on a shore, waves crashing very close to his boot-clad feet. Natalie did not loosen her grip on his arms, merely rested her forehead against his chest.
With a deep breath, she looked up into his questioning eyes.
“Welcome to Caledonia.”
Snape was stunned. She had managed a transatlantic side along apparition.
“Unbelievable.”
“Believe it.” She snorted contemptuously. Then, her entire countenance softened. “For this night, be my husband in spirit. Let me know a true union, Severus?” She peered hopefully up into his dark face. “Spend the night here in my home, what would be our home, if possible.” Her tears rolled down her cheeks wetting his shirt. The heavy breeze blew off the ocean, whipping her skirts around them.
Walking away from the stunned wizard, Natalie lifted her skirts to keep the sand out of their hems. She made a beeline for a weather-beaten house with a widow’s walk spanning the entire roof. When she stepped on to the planked walk leading to the door, two lamps lit on either side of her. The entire house itself lit up brightly, cheerfully, welcoming home its mistress. Snape hurried after her. She stopped at the door, waiting for him to catch up. She motioned him into the house, pulling the graying door closed with a snap.
She led him up the staircases to a bedroom at the very top of the house. A dark wood canopy bed dominated the small room. A calico patchwork of yellow, blues and greens graced the mattress, and mounds of pillows rested at the head, facing the windows.
Severus stood just inside her doorway taking in the room that revealed his witch’s true nature. Floor to ceiling book shelves stood as sentinels on either side of the bed. A small table and a very comfortable looking chair were positioned near the window. A panel of French doors led outside onto a large platform deck. Natalie watched him memorizing the details of her room. Surreptitiously, she slid her wand from her sleeve, a small sly smile sneaking on to her face.
“Kiangley.” Bind.
Outraged, Severus bellowed as the invisible magic hoisted him in the air and bound him to the bedposts.
“Release me!”
“Definitely not. I have a few questions of my own, my dear deatheater.”
Severus pursed his lips, his nostrils flaring in anger, his eyes flashing dangerously. Natalie wouldn’t have dared to release him, even if she wanted.
“Accio Severus’ wand.”
Natalie flicked her wand at him again. His wand slipped from his sleeve and zoomed through the air, smacking into the palm of Natalie’s hand. She turned and laid it gently on the table. He hissed in rage. The muscles in his arms and legs bulged as he fought the magic binding him with all his strength.
“You tricked me.” He snorted.
“No, I merely want answers, the answers I would expect to already have from my husband.” She whispered.
His face grew red as he strained harder. Natalie gracefully settled into the chair, kicking off her shoes. Waiting for him to calm down, she twirled her wand between her fingers. After letting Severus fight against the spell for a few long minutes, she pointed her wand at him again, thinking with all her consciousness, “Roostey.”
Snape sputtered indignantly at the non-verbal spell that left him spread-eagled and naked as the day he was born, completely at the woman’s mercy.
“Do you concede?” She asked simply, staring deep into his eyes.
“What is your question?” He tried to remain in control, gathering his wits aobut himself.
Natalie stood, walking over to him, to lay her fingers on his dark mark, now even more black, the corded muscles of his forearm rippling beneath it as he continued to pull against his magical bindings.
“Why does this grow stronger?” She queried in a mesmerizing soft voice.
“How do you know it does?” Severus begged the question with equal parts venom and apprehension.
“I can feel it.”
With her answer, Severus deflated visibly, sagging within his restraints.
“Then it is true.” He whispered hoarsely, head hanging, chin to his chest, utterly dejected. “He lives.”
Natalie worked her way on to the bed behind him and started to trace the outline of his scars criss-crossing his back.
“In all the times I have worshipped this magnificent body of yours, I have never asked about your marks. I have left your past undisturbed.” She bent to kiss one of the deeper scars, licking along its length, eliciting a shiver from the trapped man. “But, then you felt I owed you answers. Now, I want mine. First of all, why?”
“Why what?” Snape stalled.
“Why did you submit yourself to another, take his brand, follow the way of dark magic? Why on earth bind yourself to another this way?” She asked as she traced the outline of the skull on his forearm with her fingertip, reaching around him as she pressed against his back.
“Release me, Natalie. I’ll try to explain.”
Natalie crawled around to peer doubtfully into his eyes.
“My word is my bond and my oath.” Snape used her own oath to assure the suspicious woman.
“Finite incantatum.” Natalie waved her wand at him before sending it to rest on the table next to his. Snape flexed his arms, trying to encourage the blood flow back to his hands. He sprawled onto her bed, pulling her in close to his body. “Talk to me, Severus.” She pleaded.
“Mine is a long story.” Snape started.
“We have all night.” Natalie stated simply.
“My fascination with the dark arts started in childhood …”
All through the night, with the sound of the surf crashing on the shoreline reassuring both Natalie and Severus, he spewed forth his story, holding back only the details he could not share even though he wanted to give them to the witch. They paused often to join bodies as they were joining minds.

“Are you sure we should help her do this?” Nolan asked his Aunt for the thousandth time.
“Yes, mac braarey (nephew), this is best for all involved.” Mairead nodded at his dismal face.
“So much work.” Nolan sighed tiredly.
“She has to do it. Nicholas is not here for a social call.”
“I really think he’s here because Noah lost the concession.” Nolan looked at his aunt hopefully.
“Oh, right and he’s here for that as well. Keep close tabs on Noah. Don’t forget what happened to Neil.”
Nolan nodded, a far-away sad look in his eyes. He missed his older brother. No one could ever explain why he had been in that neighborhood in the first place. Damn awful way to die. Nolan thought sadly.
“You really think Dad or Nicholas had something to do with that?” He asked his aunt point-blank.
“I have no doubts, millish.” (Darling)
Nolan stood to peer out the window into the inky blackness of the night. He looked west, wishing with all his heart, “Enjoy this night, Natalie, make enough memories for the both of you, enough to last your lifetime.”

Natalie cowered on the high widow’s walk, looking out to sea with her arms wrapped tightly around her legs, her chin resting on her knees. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks. She stood when she saw both Nolan and Mairead appear at the apparition point on the shore. Nolan immediately searched for his sister on the widow’s walk. Finding her, he raised his hand in silent greeting.
She stood slowly, unraveling her legs and began the treacherous descent down the old wooden stairs. She met her family in the kitchen. Together, they mapped out their course of action. The trio argued around the kitchen table until they finally resolved their issues.
“You’ll take care of Snape, of course, McGonagall, Dumbledore and the scrolls?” Nolan double-checked with his sister.
“Yes, you handle Alexei and Ana. Naunt Mairead?”
“I’ll handle Karkaroff and the Malfoy.”
“We’ll have more time to track down Remus and Tonks, but we’ll go together, right?” Natalie’s pen scratched feverishly at the scrap of paper.
“You’ll have to check the status of the other staff members, Natalie.” Nolan chided her. He really did doubt the efficacy of their plain.
“I will.” She grumbled at him.
“Check what status of the other staff members, Natalie?” Snape interrupted the family summit. Natalie’s head shot up, her eyes locking in place with her brother's, apprehension showing clearly. The pregnant pause upset Severus.
“Natalie?” He asked again, more demandingly.
“Stupefy!” Nolan hit him hard with the hex from under the table. Snape never even saw what hit him.
