Chapter 50
“Sir are you Aberforth Dumbledore, kaks brother?”
“Who’s asking, and who’s kak?”
“I am sorry, Albus Dumbledore was my kak, my uncle at heart. I loved him very much. My name is Paula Vance.”
“Ah, so you’re the young Gypsy lass. He’s mentioned you a few times over the years, heard you was working up at the castle. You don’t dress like a Gypsy.”
“Sometimes I do, it depends on my mood.”
“Quite friendly with that murdering bastard Snape by all accounts.”
“It is no longer safe for me to stay at Hogwarts. As for my relationship with Headmaster Snape, sadly there is much that you Sir, and everyone else does not know and for now it must stay that way. I came only to give you this.” Paula passed Aberforth a rune.
“A rune stone? What’s it for?”
Harry will come here eventually, look for him. When you find him, give him this and tell him it is from me.”
“And why would I want to do that young Miss?”
“Because you want this war to end well, the same as all who fight for the right to freedom and light. It is Dagaz, make certain that he or you holds it to his skin. Do this and you will help him through one of his more difficult tribulations in the final confrontation, do this and he will have more than one chance at life. Please, it was kaks … it was your brothers wish that I do a;; that I can to help Harry. He trusted me Sir, I ask that you do the same.”
“For the life of me I can’t see why I should, but for some strange reason I do. But I tell you now Gypsy, should any harm come to that boy because of you and this piece of … whatever, I will personally hunt you down and make you sorry you were even born.”
Paula nodded. “Te shordjol muri godji sar shordjol kadi bera dou dosh.”
“And that means what exactly?”
Paula reached over the bar and pulled one of the pump handles. “Sir, may my brains flow out the way this beer flows out before I cause harm.”
Aberforth ignored the wasted beer flowing into the slop bucket, nodded, and watched as she exited the Hogs Head Inn.
The following evening Riley came back to Paula’s camp with an image that Professor MacGonagall wished to meet with her as soon as possible. “Is it safe for me to enter the grounds tonight Riley, or are the Carrows still there?”
Riley showed her an image of the two Carrow siblings spending most of their evening getting drunk on firewhiskey and blasting the hell out of each and every creature that dared show itself at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. They would then weave their way back to the castle. Paula could only hope the pair passed out in their rooms shortly after that. “Come Riley.” She leapt onto his back and they took off through the night sky in the direction of Hogwarts.
Once Riley was settled in the stables, Paula quietly made her way into the castle and made directly for Gryffindor tower. It did not take her long to locate MacGonagall’s rooms, she could feel the anxiety that radiated from the woman.
Paula did not knock, instead she opened the door and slipped inside.
“Professor MacGonagall, you wished to speak with me.” She said softly to the woman seated in a wing backed chair beside the fireplace.
“Oh my goodness. You scared me half to death.” Minerva exclaimed, one hand on her chest as she stood shakily.
“I am sorry, I thought it wise to sneak in rather than knock and risk being heard.”
“Yes, yes. Please Miss… Paula, sit down.”
Paula took a seat while the Professor locked and warded the door then placed an imperturbable charm on it.
“One cannot be too careful.” She said and made her way to her seat, facing Paula.
“May I be frank with you?”
“It would be preferable, yes.”
“Paula, you are a soul searcher yes?”
At Paula’s nod she continued.
“In the Headmasters office it has always been the practice to hang the portraits of past Headmasters, who would then offer advice to the current Headmaster when required. Or not, depending on who’s portrait is…”
“You wish to know why Kak’s does not waken.”
“Well yes, how did you know?”
“It is not yet time for him to waken Professor, his remains may lie in the tomb out there, but as yet his del is earthbound.”
“I’m sorry I don’t understand. His del?”
“His soul Professor. When it has done what is necessary, then he will rest peacefully and his picture will come alive.”
“But, how do you know all of this? Why is his soul earthbound? I still do not understand.”
“What I tell you must remain between us Professor MacGonagall, you must accept what I tell you and not try to change my mind. It was Kaks will that I did what I did. What I must do.”
MacGonagall nodded, wringing her hands as she waited to hear what the young Gypsy had to tell her.
“You will have noticed that Fawkes is also missing, he is with me.”
“With you, but why?”
“Not with me exactly, he resides in my vur… wagon to be near his friend.”
When MacGonagall frowned Paula took the older woman’s hand gently.
“May I call you Minerva?” Minerva nodded, eager to learn more. “Kak… Albus Dumbledore’s soul is in my keeping.” She felt the woman tense but did not release the hold on her hand.
“I took it from him the moment he fell from the Astronomy tower, with his blessing. He has one more task he must do and then I will release him. That is when his picture will awaken, he can explain all to you then.”
She watched as the older witch’s eyes became teary and her skin paled.
Minerva did not know what to say, what to think or how to react.
Paula threw some powder into the floo and summoned tea for them both. A minute later a house elf appeared with a pot of tea, two cups and milk, sugar and lemon. “Thank you.” Paula told the elf before it bowed and disappeared.
Paula poured the tea and reached into her small pouch, she crumbled some herbs into Minerva’s cup and passed it to her.
“They are just herbs, to help calm you.”
Minerva sniffed at her cup and took a small sip. Already she felt a little less traumatised and took another sip. “Thank you, I think.”
After a few minutes of drinking tea and quiet contemplation, Minerva spoke again. “You know of course about Severus, what he did?”
“I do, and yes, I have seen him since that time.”
“You what? Sweet Circe! Paula he is a murderer, you must keep away from him please. It is not safe for you to see him again.”
“I am well hidden already. Only those I wish to find me, will, and Severus poses no threat to me.”
“You don’t know that. Look at what he did to poor Albus. The poor man trusted him with his life, and look where it got him.” Minerva broke down, her emotions getting the better of her.
Paula let her cry herself out, saying nothing. Once she was calm Paula asked. “There is more, more you wish to ask of me.”
“No… I mean yes. One of our students, Neville Longbottom, he and many others are missing at the moment, I have an idea they are safe, though where they are exactly I have no idea.”
“They are preparing themselves, do not worry about them.”
“But how do you know? Oh never mind. It is about Neville that I wanted to talk to you. Well about his parents actually.” Minerva told Paula about Frank and Alice Longbottom, their work as aurors for the Ministry and their positions in the Order of the Phoenix. She explained what happened to them when they fought in the first war against Voldemort and how they suffered at the hand, or rather the wand point, of Bellatrix Lestrange. How the witch held them under the cruciatus curse until their minds were completely gone. “The couple have been incarcerated in St. Mungo’s these pat sixteen years with no hope of recovery.”
Paula sat and studied the other witch, their eyes never left each others as one hoped and the other considered. “I have met this Bellatrix you speak of. She is a madwoman. You want me to read them, see if I can heal their souls?”
“Yes.” Minerva said, her voice nothing more than a whisper. “Please Paula, they were… are wonderful people, and it would mean so much to young Longbottom if you could do this. I have taken the liberty of sounding out Mrs Longbottom. She is Neville’s grandmother and Franks mother. She brought the boy up on her own and is extremely protective of him. But she has never lost hope that one day her son and his wife will one day recover. I know it is asking a lot of you, I don’t even know if what I am asking is possible. Is it possible Paula?”
“I would have to meet with them to tell you that. You say Mrs Longbottom the elder is aware of what I do, is she happy for me to proceed if it is possible?”
“She is.”
“She knows I am Romany?”
“She does and she doesn’t care. Augusta has never been one to harbour prejudice against another, no matter their breeding, creed or colour. She is a very down to earth woman and takes people as she finds them.”
“I will do this, but I do not know this St. Mungo’s you speak of.”
“If you are available tomorrow, Remus Lupin and Kingsley Shacklebolt have both agreed to escort you, they will ensure your safety while you… visit.”
“You mean Mr Moody did not volunteer?”
Minerva went a light shade of pink until she realised that Paula was smiling. “Oh you.” She told the younger witch. “Paula, thank you for doing this.”
“Thank me if I can heal their souls. Even then, it is my duty to do what I can. Good night Minerva, you can tell them I will be at Headquarters first thing tomorrow.”
