LEECH
Chapter 50
Kathy wondered where she was when she woke up on Monday evening. Twin orbs of dim light were hardly enough for her to make out her surroundings, but the faint glow on moonlight filtering through a crack in the curtains of one wall proved it was not the dungeons.
For a moment she panicked, not daring to move for fear of making a noise as her eyes darted amongst the shadows.
The sound of soft footsteps had her leaping from the bed and crouching on the floor.
“What on earth are you doing down there? You’ll catch your death on those cold flags. Come on, back into bed.” Poppy told her, shaking her head in puzzlement.
When Kathy realised it was not a Death Eater that was standing by her bed, but what she assumed to be a nurse in very old fashioned nursing robes, Kathy felt a mix of relief and embarrassment. “I… I thought I heard something drop, I was just looking to see what it was.” She said, now glad for the dim lighting, she could feel her cheeks burning.
"Yes, well whatever it is can wait. Professor Snape left this for you to take when you woke. It's just a Pepper-Up potion, but he and Albus seem to think that the potions supplied by the medical council will not have any effect on you. None of my wands seem to work on you, so they could be right. How are you feeling?"
"Fine. I feel fine, thank you. Where am I?"
"In the hospital wing of course. I'm Madam Pomfrey, I'm the medi-witch at Hogwarts."
"Pleased to meet you Madam Pomfrey. Why am I here, did something happen?"
"You drink this while I order tea, then I will tell you."
Kathy drank the potion and waited until the nurse came back with a tray of tea and a plate of sandwiches. "I'm starving, how did you know?"
"You've been asleep for the last forty-one and a half hours, I guessed you might be a bit peckish dear."
"Good grief, what... the unicorn. It must have been something to do with that."
"Yes, Hagrid did say you Leeched it."
"Is it alright do you know?"
"Apparently it ran off fit as a fiddle without so much as a bye-your-leave, so yes, I would say it was alright. You however, were in a state of complete exhaustion. So eat."
Kathy picked up a sandwich and smiled briefly before taking a bite.
Poppy smiled back. At least her patient did not appear to be suffering any ill effects. She vaguely remembered her tutor skimming over Leeches when she attended medical training, but they were such a rare phenomenon that it wasn't considered important to teach the students on the care and handling of such a person. Now she was hoping that Kathy would enlighten her some on the subject.
Kathy in turn was glad of a friendly face and another female to talk to. She told Poppy what she knew about her ability, and explained about what Professor Binns had said about Leech also being a very old word for a healer. That was the reason for the experiment on the dying unicorn.
"Well apparently Severus is doing some tests to try and discover exactly what was wrong with it. So far nothing has shown up, but he hopes to have the results in a few weeks."
"There’s no need, I think know what was wrong with it."
"Oh! And how would you know that?"
"Because the disease was inside of me for a short while, I know what it was Madam Pomfrey. If I'd waited much longer to get to that tree it would have taken hold of me and killed me."
At Poppy's narrow eyed look she told her.
"It believe it had cancer. It was eating away at it and had almost succeeded."
“Oh my. But how do you know what it was? I’m not trying to discredit your opinion, it’s the medi-witch in me I suppose, but I need to know how you know.”
“If I’m honest, I don’t know how I know, only that I do. And this all sounds really pompous and stupid. The tests will probably show something completely different to what I said anyway, and I’ll be proved wrong.”
Madam Pomfrey didn’t say anything. Leeching was a mostly undocumented power, so who was to say the young woman was wrong? Not her, that’s for sure.
“Whatever the results of those test, my concert right now is you. Now I’m willing to release you on condition you take it easy for a day or two. And you come straight back here if you start feeling over tired for no reason, or you get headaches.”
“I will, thanks Madam Pomfrey.”
“And call me Poppy in future when there are no students about.”
“I will, thanks Poppy.” Kathy felt as fit as a fiddle as she made her way down the steps. The only problem she had was that she wasn’t at all sure where she was going. As soon as she stepped onto the first staircase it began to move.
Kathy held on for dear life until it stopped, then cautiously made her way down to the next land, leaping onto it before the stairs had chance to move again.
And move they did. Now Kathy was on a landing with no stairs up and no stairs down, at least not that she could see, and she didn’t have a clue which direction to take to find any. The corridor was dark and seemingly endless whichever direction she looked and she wished she’d had the sense to ask Poppy for directions before she left.
“Bugger it all to hell.” Muttering to herself, she turned left and was relieved to find the odd torch flaring up at her approach. They were few and far between however and the occasional window showed nothing but more darkness. Kathy hated this. There were too many shadows cast by the weak torchlight and it felt like dozens of pairs of eyes were boring into the back of her head. It was cold as well and Kathy wasn’t sure if the shivers down her spine were from the chill air, or downright terror of what might jump out at her. “Stop it Kathy.” She admonished out loud. “There’s nothing in the dark that isn’t there in daylight.” There again this whole castle wasn’t like anywhere she’d ever experienced, so maybe there was something lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce on her. “”Stopitstopitstopitstopit.” Was the constant chant that left her lips as she made her way past dark alcoves and grotesque statues.
Her eyes were wide and she could make out the small puffs of warm air that left her mouth. Again she looked over her shoulder and saw nothing, then screamed when she faced forward again and a white translucent something passed right through her, chilling her through until it emerged being her.
She collapsed to the floor, scrambling away from the ghostly shape until her back was against the wall, then screamed again when a voice asked if she was alright.
“Whoa. Whoa.” The voice said, trying to avoid her hands as she flailed madly at whatever was about to attack her.
Kathy didn’t listen, she was too busy screaming at whatever it was to get away from her while beating and kicking at it furiously.
A light suddenly appeared and she was about to try and scramble away from it when she realised it was a wand light. ‘Wand. Wizard.’ Her mind said. ‘Wandwizardwandwizard.’ She stared, her nerves jangling so badly she thought they must be audible, to see two young men. One with red hair, the other with black hair and glasses. She suddenly realised they were students, and they looked almost as scared as she felt.
“Ghost.” She managed to splutter.
When the two boy grinned at her she wasn’t very amused.
“Yeah, they do that to you. It’s best to avoid them if you can.” “Harry. Harry Potter. This is my friend Ron Weasley.”
Kathy stared at them as though they were mad. “Avoid… that thing went through me.” She said as she tried to control her sobs. “The stairs, they moved and I don’t know where they went. Who did you say you are?” She got to her feet, legs shaking badly.
The boys introduced themselves again. “Err, you wont report us will you, strictly speaking were not supposed to be out at this time of night.”
Kathy looked at Ron. “I don’t care what you’re allowed to do, if you can get me back to the dungeons safely I won’t breath a word. Just don’t leave me on my own. Please.”
“Okay, but no more screaming. If we get caught we’ll be in a whole load of trouble.” Harry said. “And if someone comes, don’t be surprised if we disappear. You can ask them to take you the rest of the way. Is that okay with you?”
“Yeah, fine. Anything. What do you mean, disappear? How can you disappear? No, don’t tell me. Lets just get out of here.”
Harry and Ron led her to the staircase and down as far as the entrance to the dungeon steps. “You know you really should have your wand with you, you could have signalled for help if you did.”
“Thanks, Ron is it, I’ll try and remember that next time I’m lost in a stupidly big castle in the middle of the night getting attacked by ghosts.”
Ron gave her a sheepish look. “Sorry.”
“No, it’s me that should be sorry. Look, thanks for bringing me back, you two better get back to wherever you’re meant to be.”
“Well she didn’t seem that bad, if a little loopy.” Ron commented as her and Harry ducked under the invisibility cloak and made their way back to the Gryffindor common room.
