Chapter 50: So Many Questions
The day was dragging by slowly for Hermione. Tonight she would be attending a meeting for The Order along with the Potters, Sirius, and Remus. Lily had certainly gotten her way having an invitation be extended to Hermione. All of the males were skeptical to have her there, especially Sirius. He hadn't said much to her the past four days since the discussion at the breakfast table. Hermione had kept busy taking care of Thomas and formulating exactly what she wanted to say to Dumbledore. In her mind she knew two different men named Albus Dumbledore. One had been kind and supportive of her as Harry Potter's friend. The other one had been nothing but cruel and cantankerous to her as Tom Riddle's girlfriend. She knew that she needed to keep a clear head and perspective this evening, especially when she first saw him. Getting him alone would be a challenge, but she had a feeling that he would also be seeking her out.
Thomas and Harry were both lying on a quilt on the floor. The babies made cute little noises, as they were both fed and nappies changed. Lily was out with James doing something that could not be disclosed. All James had shared was they would be away on Order business for the afternoon. So Hermione volunteered for babysitting duty which was easier than dealing with the cantankerous James Potter.
Hermione heard the back door slam shut and whistling filled the air. She knew it was Sirius that was home. He came into the room and flopped down onto the floor next to Hermione and the babies. Hermione met his eyes wondering if he was finally going to talk to her. His eyes softened as he grinned. Leaning in he swiftly kissed Hermione wrapping his arms around her and not letting go. Sirius guided her gently to the floor as their kiss deepened. Gods this man was confusing her. Why did he have to be so kind and loving? Why couldn't he be the pompous ass he usually was around his male friends? To have two, handsome men that wanted her was something she hadn't dealt with previously. This unknown territory put her on unsure footing of how to deal with this situation.
The kiss ended leaving Hermione breathless. Sirius smiled down at her with his gray eyes twinkling. "I'm sorry for acting like a first class prat." She couldn't help but smile back at him. She reached up to trail her fingers across his bearded chin. His handsome face held too much allure for her these days.
"Don't do that again. I'm pretty independent and I don't like to be treated like I'm stupid." Sirius's eyes lit up with surprise.
"I know you're not stupid and I can feel your magical power. You don't realize, but I come from a family very strong in the Dark Arts. I can tell that you have dabbled in the Dark Arts."
Hermione had never seen this man so serious in what he was saying. She wasn't sure how to respond to his accusation. There wasn't any use in denying it to him.
"It's time for the truth." Hermione knew it was her turn to divulge a small part of herself that she hadn't before. "I was caught up with someone who introduced me to the Dark Arts. It feels so empowering to use that side of magic."
Sirius's eyes crinkled with worry, "But you should know how seductive the Dark Arts are. It's like a disease that will canker your soul." He sat up running his fingers through his hair in agitation. "That's why I flew the coop to live with James and his parents when I was sixteen. I had to get away from all of them, and they didn't particularly like me after I was sorted into Gryffindor house at Hogwarts."
"I know all of that Sirius…" Hermione tried to think of how to respond.
"Is Thomas's father a Death Eater?" Sirius had a wild look in his eyes familiar from his days after his twelve-year stint in Azkaban. "Is this why you've been hiding from him?"
Hermione hugged her knees to her chest and started to cried.
Tom stared into Flamina's eyes feeling a bit defiant. Yes, in the past years that Hermione had been out of his life, he had indulged in sex with many nameless and now faceless women. It had meant nothing to him, just a release from the stresses of his life. This seemed more personal in making this decision. Hermione was back and he had no desire to be with anyone else. But, if it meant finding Hermione and his son he would sleep with the devil. In fact, that is exactly what he would be doing.
"You have a deal." The words spit out of his mouth in disgust. Flamina smiled, as only a woman who had just gotten her way does.
James and Lily scouted out the old mansion from the distance. The rundown house had missing bricks and peeling paint. The overgrown ferns encircled the base and sides of the structure. From all appearances it looked absolutely deserted.
"Are you sure that you saw Peter go in there? It looks so old the wood and brick are starting to crumble into itself." James didn't mean to disregard what Lily had observed, but he wasn't quite sure that she was back to normal after giving birth to Harry.
"I know what I saw James. It was Peter. He's very easy to spot" Lily huffed at how James was questioning her judgment. She had never really liked the squirrely friend that was part of the Marauders. Lily had been happy that he hadn't been hanging around with them the past several months.
"Why would he be somewhere like this? Death Eaters have been sighted around here. That's why we were sent to investigate." James seemed insulted at the insinuation that Peter was associating with Death Eaters. He had been one of his friends since the beginning of his time at Hogwarts. They had been through many adventures the four of them. He didn't like that Hermione had accused him of maybe being a Death Eater. It was a crazy notion.
"I don't trust him anymore James. I feel he's being a bit dodgy. He had started acting strange around us even before Hermione showed up." Lily turned her head away to look back at the mansion. James came behind her putting his hands on her shoulders.
"Where is this coming from Lily? I know what Hermione said about Peter and him not being the secret keeper, but how does she know all of this? He's been my friend longer than we've known Hermione.
Lily bit her lip and sighed, "Hermione said that he is not being honest about who he really supports in the war."
"How in the Bloody Hell does she know anything about one of my mates?" James was quick to anger, "We've only known her for a few months and we've been friends with Peter since we were first years." James grabbed Lily pulling her even closer.
Lily stood straight knocking James's hands off of her. "There is something about her that makes me want to believe in what she says. Hermione would never do anything to hurt Harry or us." Lily's eyes filled with tears. "She practically begged me to believe her. She said that Peter would betray us in some way. You should have seen her face James, she knows more than what she's saying."
James reached out to cup Lily's cheek. She clutched his hand, "I'm scared my love. I don't think we'll survive this war." James crushed her to his chest and apparated them home. It was time for him to talk to Hermione.
Sorry for the short chapter but hey, it's here and posted quickly. Please review! I love hearing from you good or bad. Some reviews make me laugh, cry and cringe…JK ;)
