Chapter 50

With help from Lynn who works with me when it comes to flow, continuity and other issues.
Just a reminder of what's on my profile: reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Tossing the Prophet down on the table with a satisfied smirk, Lucius gave a firm nod. “He's gone. It's too little, too late. The reaming Fudge got from both Amelia Bones and Rufus, in the Prophet no less, is enough to send it there, most likely. The debacle last night after Fudge has spent all summer swearing it's nothing but a lie is just going to help it. Parents have to be sending Howlers this morning as there wasn't enough protection for their children at that station. It turned out fine and they were tended to perfectly, but they will want to know why reports weren't taken seriously. Those are questions Fudge can't answer for anyone without revealing he wanted it covered up.” Tossing the paper down, he leaned back, looking smug.
“It can only help everyone,” Severus told him with a pleased nod. Picking up the paper, though he had read it once already, he skimmed the article again. Sure he had all the relevant information, he sighed then added, “Both of those two are in line for the top job, from what you said. Let's hope one of them gets it as they aren't likely to buy into Albus' spin and will ignore him unless he has relevant information that can help.”“We need that,” Lucius nodded. “Desperately. Someone with no agenda other than doing what is right is required here. Either one of those two is perfect for the job.”Taking the paper as he ate, Harry skimmed the article, brow furrowed. “This is fairly accurate from what Sirius told us about the attack. The rest—who knows. I think that's a first.”“It is,” Lucius admitted with an amused snort. Sobering up, he explained, “I think it's because other papers are reporting accurately. Since they are, they are going to make the Prophet look bad. As huge as this story is, it won't pay to venture into the realm of yellow journalism.”“Someone, somewhere, needs to take the Prophet to task for all their spin over the summer,” Severus snorted, shaking his head. “That was out there for all to read. If they've done it once, they will again or won't take issue kowtowing to someone else.”“This is true,” Lucius admitted with a nod. Groaning, he thought it over then said, “Maybe it's time for another paper to take them to task and give them the kick they need to do this right. Perhaps, if your godfather and Remus are up to it, they can make another visit to their reporter friend and put a bug in her ear. That might get it out there.”“I'll say something to him when we talk next,” Harry assured him with a nod. Sighing, he asked, “What are we doing today? Back to classes?”“Yes,” Severus nodded. “A few anyway. I've got a good schedule set up for you and we'll tackle some of it. I do want to spend time, with Lucius' help, going over some other classes you might be interested in and the first steps when it comes to what you may want to pursue as a career. We've got some information on that, but want an idea of what interests you best so we can start gearing your classes towards that direction. As far ahead as you are, we can start doing that now.”“Sounds great to me,” Harry grinned, liking the idea. “I'm going to keep the mirror on me just in case. With what happened last night, that's probably needed.”“A very wise suggestion,” Lucius nodded. “We'll finish up with breakfast, settle down and work on scheduling then press on.” Then he changed to more neutral topics while they finished eating.
Flopped on his bed during his afternoon break from classes, Harry was going through some books and pamphlets that the other two had given him about careers. So far nothing was jumping out at him. Auror—though he liked that because his dad and Sirius were ones, he wouldn't do it. No, he didn't think he'd be a good one. There were other bits that he discounted as they sounded plenty boring. Some sounded interesting, but he wasn't sure. As they had plenty of time, he wasn't worried about picking something today, he was just curious what else might be out there.
Petting Kaliya's head when he slithered onto his back, Harry smiled at the contented hissing. “Nothing to worry about?” He asked, knowing the two snakes had gone out patrolling along the property boundaries.“Nothing that we could detect, Harry,” the snake told him with a contented hiss, curling up and relishing Harry's body heat. “However, the issue of Nagini and me staying warm has come up. It's a rather chilly day and that's not something we'll handle well when it continues. I'll say something to Severus and Lucius to see if there are charms to help keep us warm or we won't be able to go out.”“Not something we thought of, honestly,” Harry admitted, making a note of that on the parchment he had there. Chuckling then grinning, he said, “Or we can conjure you fur coats to wear when it gets too cold! That would keep you warm and look hilarious at the same time.”“You are ever so funny, Harry,” the snake chuckled, finding that vision hilarious. “I don't see how we could move well wearing one as we need the scales on our bellies to do so. It's an ingenious idea, however. That I'll give you.”“Yeah, one of those bits that would take work. Warming charms would probably be easier,” Harry admitted.Watching over Harry's shoulder, the snake asked, “Anything you think you would like to follow for a career yet?”“Some interesting bits I'll look at more closely, but not the one where you just know,” Harry told him tossing aside literature on Curse Breaking.“I'm sure you'll find something. After all, you're quite talented in many areas, Harry,” the snake said, peering at the mass of books and pamphlets scattered all over.“I will, eventually. It'll just take time,” Harry told him, not at all stressed over it.Focusing on Harry, making small talk, Kaliya paid attention to the bond that was there. Like the others, it was strong in the draw to Severus and Lucius. Then he remembered some of the other bits when it came to Harry, such as the hormone overload, as he called it. He assumed now, with what he knew, that the focus for some of it was the two in the house. That was good. While Harry might be the easiest to get information out of, he wanted to try a few other things first. Oh, he wasn't going to force them into anything that was against their will, but nudge them the right direction. He was going to try the same thing later today with the other two.
Testing the new spell for the Horcruxes yet again, he looked over at Remus who was as bewildered as he was. By now, the two of them had run the damned thing several times and were sure that they had it right with the wand movement just perfect, yet it kept showing a spell trail leading to the cupboard that Kreacher stayed in. That shouldn't be happening. Which meant either there was one of the nasty things in the house or they were doing it wrong.
At this time, they were just tending to busy work, waiting for instructions on whatever they needed to do and a time for the meeting they were having tonight. That would be at Hogwarts, of course, but Albus assured them they could get in. So, to keep busy, they were working with some bits, like this spell and others they found.Watching Remus cast the spell, being methodical about the wand movement and how he said the incantation, then seeing the same damned spell trail once more, Sirius looked at him. Sighing, he looked at the bright green trail and said, “First, let's check where it's leading and see what's setting it off. If we know, we might be able to figure out what in the hell we're doing wrong.”“Good plan, because I'm sure that we both have it down, Sirius. Everything is perfect with it and we're doing it right.” Remus sighed, wondering if this wasn't a false positive of some kind because of the nature of some objects in the house with as dark as they were. They had thrown out all they could find, but knew Kreacher had squirreled a few away. Maybe it was one of those. He didn't know. If they could find the object, they could tell if the spell just didn't work right, was being set off by something it shouldn't or if they were doing it wrong. Then they could send the results to Albus so he could figure it out.“Keep an eye out for Kreacher,” Sirius told Remus after they got to cupboard. Opening it, he cast the spell again and it pointed to a locket in there. Shaking his head, he reached out to pick it up then drew his hand back quickly. Whatever that—thing was it was giving him the willies. Shaking his head, eyes wide, he lifted his wand and cast the spell Snape and Lucius had given them. That one showed a positive for a Horcrux as well. Eyes wide, he looked at Remus then breathed, “It's the real deal.”Stepping closer, Remus levitated the object out, shuddering at the feelings from the dark aura rolling off it. “That is—oh, it's bad.” Suspending it away from them, he looked at Sirius, eyes wide, trembling, then shook his head. Trying to think, he said, “I think you need to get Kreacher and see what he knows about this object. It might be a battle to get it out of him, but any little bit is going to help us figure out what's going on. Once we do, we'll send it on to Lucius and Severus to destroy.”“Will do,” Sirius nodded then yelled for Kreacher. It was going to be a fight to get what the elf knew, but they had to find out. Because he was damned sure that this was the real thing now and how a piece of Voldemort ended up in this house was something he wanted to know!
Parked on his normal place on the floor by the table with Kaliya, Harry was working on the dog. It was actually going quite well and he was getting down what he needed to on it. There had been a few glitches, of course, one that was hilarious as it turned the dog's fur neon blue and made it fart bubbles. All three of them had a good laugh over that bit. After a bit of going back and looking over what he had done, Harry figured out what he'd applied wrong and it was fixed. Now he was working with the charms that allowed Kaliya to steer it properly. So far, it was going just fine with the spells going on as they should. This he was pleased with as it was far easier working with his magic than it had been. Making his work not as complicated was fine by him! You weren't going to hear him complain.
Severus and Lucius were working on the mirrors they wanted around the place. That still wasn't going well from what he could tell. They found some of the spells they needed, but not all. From what he was hearing, it wasn't bothering them too much.As he pressed on with the dog, he mentioned to them the problem Kaliya had brought up earlier about the cold. When he finished, he added, “Warming charms shouldn't be hard to find for that I wouldn't think.”“Absolutely not,” Lucius said with a dismissive wave. “There are actually an entire class of spells for serpents that deal with such issues. Some the cold will drive into hibernation. Most don't want that but also want to take their familiar out with them, so such bits were invented. I can find those easily enough and we'll start applying them as the weather grows cooler.”“I mentioned conjuring them fur coats, but that wouldn't work,” Harry snickered as he applied the next spell.Snorting at the image that brought to mind, Severus told him, sounding completely amused, “No, there are too many problems with such things. Though it would be most interesting to see snakes with fur.”Chuckling, Harry was about to say something else when the signal from the mirror went off. On edge as that couldn't mean anything good with all that was going on, he enlarged it and saw a pale Sirius and Remus sitting there. Stiffening up, he asked, “What's wrong?”“We just sent a package off to you lot,” Sirius told them, looking between the three. “Be damned careful when you handle it because it's dangerous.”Not liking the sound of that, Lucius asked, tone wary, “What is it?”“Another Horcrux. We found one. It's a locket.” Remus shuddered, shaking his head.“Where did you find it?” Severus asked, eyes wide.“In the house, believe it or not,” Sirius told him with a groan. Leaning back, he began to explain how they managed, what they got from Kreacher, the whole nine yards. When he finished, he shook his head and shrugged, “We thought it best to let you tend to it as you did the last two. Plus you can take a gander at it to see if it gives any hints on what the others might be. We're not going to say anything to Albus about finding it either.”“We'll do what we can, never fear,” Lucius told him, looking determined. His mind was already working on what information they could gain from this new discovery and how it could be related to what else was out there.“We put every protection we could on that package to make sure you aren't directly exposed, but stay cautious,” Remus sighed, shuddering at what he felt from it while they were around the damnable object.“Never fear, we know how to handle them and what to watch out for,” Severus assured both of them. Setting the books aside he had been going through, he sighed. While it was good one of the disgusting objects had been found, it also meant that they had plenty of work to do when it came to readings, what the object was, tracing it, all of that.Settling back with his tea, Severus then began having the two walk them through all they found out from Kreacher, making sure to take in every detail they could remember. One never knew when the smallest of things mentioned could be the biggest help.
“Did you get it destroyed?” Harry asked, looking between the two men as they came in and sat at the table with him. The three of them had gotten every reading they could on the locket and pictures so they could look it up. Then they managed to get it open with the Parseltongue trait. That had been chilling, for all of them, and it prompted them to shut it quickly. While he could wield the Fiendfyre, it was better to let the other two tend to that as they could control it better.
“We managed, easily,” Lucius assured him, taking a seat with a loud groan. “And it was not nice.”“Unlike the others, this one screamed as it went up,” Severus told him, looking plenty dour over the noise it made, something that had made his blood run cold. “We're wondering, as the object seemed slightly sentient, if the Dark Lord knows it's been destroyed. When you talk to Black tonight, pass that along. We're not sure if he'll know it's gone or not. If he does, he may go into a mode where he plans to gather them so they're protected.”“I'll make sure to pass that along,” Harry assured them both with a nod. Sirius wanted to know if they managed to destroy the object, so he was going to 'call' him before he went to bed.“If he does know and finds out some have been lost, one never knows what it might set off,” Lucius groaned, shaking his head. “That we can't worry about, though. No, we need to press on. Let others do that. Just pass that tidbit along as well so the two know to start preparing.”“Another thing I'll make sure to mention,” Harry nodded.Sighing as he sipped his tea, Severus told the two, “I say we find a deck of cards and play a few hands. Outside on the patio is good. Though it's a tad windy, it's protected from that and won't cause issues. The snakes should be fine as well. With all that's gone on, a bit of time to relax is probably something we all need.”Summoning an elf and setting them to the task of organizing what was needed, Lucius nodded. “We'll have some laughs, yes. Good idea, Severus!”“Sounds fun. Just keep in mind that I don't know many card games,” Harry said, stretching with a groan. This would be fun even if he didn't. A great way to wind down.“We'll teach you, don't worry,” Lucius assured him, standing with a soft groan. “We just have to stay wary of Severus. He's a shark at such games.”Snorting and looking smug, Severus stood, but said nothing. Yes, this would be enjoyable.
Curled up on their rock about midnight after their first round of checking the house, the two snakes were talking softly.
“On Severus' end, there has been some mutterings in his sleep about Harry. It's usually accompanied by higher amounts of arousal,” Kaliya told Nagini.“I'm getting the same thing with Lucius,” Nagini told him with a contented sigh as she basked in the heat of the rock. “It's good they are and what we need. What about Harry?”“It's the same thing. Though he doesn't mutter much in his sleep, the bond is triggering slightly when arousal starts. That alone tells me it's the other two he's thinking about. Now, we just have to get them moving in the right direction.” Kaliya explained. “I've triggered some of the bond that will assist, though it won't make the choice for them. Give it a couple of days then we'll see what we can manage to push them together slightly. At least in a different way than what we have. As we do that, we also need to learn where the reluctance is coming from. If we know where it's from, we can counter it in some way.”“On Lucius' end, there's been some mumblings about Harry being the same age as his son,” Nagini offered. “I remember he has a son, Draco, the same age as Harry from my time with Tom.”“Yes, that probably does factor in,” Kaliya said distractedly. As he thought it over, he told her, “Severus was a good friend of Harry's mother while they were in school and his teacher. I'm certain that is part as well.”
“Severus may end up harder to work with because of that,” Nagini told him with a soft sigh.“Yes, perhaps,” Kaliya admitted, shifting around himself, enjoying how the heat from the rock felt. “Let me see what I can find out. With Lucius—I think we need to point out that though Harry is the same age as his son, he's no longer biologically that age. They themselves told Harry that he's now someone in his mid-twenties when it comes to that.”“How about you take on Severus and I'll work with Lucius. I think Harry is one you need to work with as well. He gets so confused about some parts, like mating, and embarrassed,” Nagini suggested, curling up next to Kaliya.“Harry will be mine to tend to, yes,” Kaliya assured her, head now resting atop hers. “His issues are he's still coming to grips with all he went through. I'll get him moving how we want. It's my thought that Severus is going to end up the trickiest of the lot. There is so much self-blame and hatred there that it'll be hard to overcome.”“Which means we both have so much to do to get them there,” Nagini sighed, her tail twitching in a contented way.“We have all the time we need to make this happen, my pretty lady,” Kaliya assured her with a contented hiss. While it wouldn't be easy, they would manage.
