Chapter 49
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Stepping into the room he shared with Harry, after checking what he normally did first thing in the morning and working out, Tom saw Black sitting by the bed, eating his breakfast. The first thing out of his mouth was, “Any signs of him coming around aside from what we've already seen?”
Nodding, holding up his hand while he finished chewing then swallowing, Sirius said, “Actually, yeah. He opened his eyes about fifteen minutes ago. It was only for a few moments and it didn't look like he was real focused on anything, but it happened.”Taking that as a good sign, Tom sighed. “Today, stay up here with him. I have things to attend to. I'll check in when I can, of course, but if something happens, or he comes around, send an elf for me. Also, send an elf for the medi-witch when he needs the cream applied. If anything at all odd happens, let me know.”“Will do,” Sirius told him with a firm expression. He had fully planned to stay with Harry all day anyway, so that wasn't a big deal.Sighing, sitting on the edge of the bed and rubbing Harry's leg, Tom wasn't sure what to do here. He was a patient person, no doubt there. That was self proving with what was going on. This kind of patience though was a whole other matter. In fact, it wasn't something he had dealt with before and wasn't sure what to do or how to handle it. Not to mention the fact he wanted to exact retribution on Wormtail now for what he had done, not wait for Harry to come around. He would wait though. Harry would want it for not only this mess but so much in the past. Shaking his head, he didn't know how to handle some of this, though it increased that want there to push forward with what had to be done so that this mess ended and there would be less danger for his lover. There would always be danger, of that there was no doubt, even when he was in power. The degree of it would lessen though and he could openly have Harry guarded by others. That would set his mind more at ease over it.Thinking over what all had to be done that day and how some of it was tasks Harry took on for him, Tom tried to come up with a way that he didn't have to shoulder all of it. Looking at Black after a minute of sorting through it and focusing on what he was having Narcissa do, he said, “Harry told me you know some about the Hallows Prophecy.”“I do,” Sirius confirmed, sending his now empty dishes to the kitchen. Leaning back, he asked, “Why?”“As you probably know, I have Narcissa looking into it. If I send her up here with the information she has, can you see if you can put it together for me? That burn—it does look like the symbol. That is odd and I'm wondering if it's not related to that Prophecy. Harry usually attends to these things for me and I would like the information. All I need is for you to gather what she has and get her to explain it to you. Then you can pass it on to me. Plus, it'll give her a chance to look at the burn and work out what she needs to do there. I don't think it's sufficiently scabbed over to do anything. Maybe, if you're willing, she can practice on you to get it down correctly.”Giving a snort and small grin at being a test dummy to apply makeup on, Sirius shook his head but said, “Sure. I'll let Cissy do that. I'm not sure about anything when it comes to that crap and how to work with it or what she might need to do. The other—that's fine too.” Stopping, he looked at the man and wanted to ask about the Prophecy shite, but didn't. It was his thought he would figure it out when he heard it.“When I come up here to check on him, I'll get the information from you. She's good about having it in a concise order that I can work with even if I don't hear what she has to say on the topic.” Stopping, he looked at his sleeping lover then sighed. “Alright, I have work to do. Anything happens, let me know.” Standing, seeing Black nod, he then swept out to start the day, feeling like he was missing his right arm as he did.
Sitting in Professor McGonagall's office, Hermione and Ginny were exchanging astonished looks. Ron looked pale and was shaking slightly. Even the twins seemed slightly off-kilter over what they had just heard.
Looking at the students sitting there then glancing at Albus, Minerva asked, softly, trying to keep a gentle tone, “Have any of you seen anyone slip anything to Mr. Potter? Or anyone taking an overt interest in him that seems odd?”“No, nothing, Professor,” Hermione said, shaking her head. Looking around, the others were doing the same.“Harry's gotten stuff before like that and just stuffs it in his trunk or tosses it out,” Ron added. “I haven't seen anything lately, though.”“We didn't think so,” Albus said with a sigh, shifting in his chair, shaking his head. “If you do hear anything odd, let us know, please.”“We will,” Ginny told him with a firm nod.“Harry's going to be fine, isn't he?” Hermione asked, concerned, brow creased.“He'll be just fine,” Albus soothed, smiling at the young witch. “He just has to be isolated for a week is all. It's for his own protection. Mostly, he'll just sleep. We have someone checking on him to make sure that he's fine and nothing goes wrong.”“Is there any way to find out who did this?” Hermione asked, looking between the headmaster and her head of house.Sighing softly, Minerva shook her head, “No. We've tried to trace who might have sent them, but couldn't. Potions like this don't come through straight channels so going about it that way won't work either. Once Harry is better, we'll ask him, of course, but we don't think he'll know. The card on it said Nick so we assume, since he ate them, that he didn't realize it wasn't from his boyfriend. We'll keep trying, of course, but we don't hold out much hope of tracing who sent them.”Sighing, looking at her hands that were folded in her lap, Hermione shook her head. “Why would someone do this?”“That's something we can never understand when a situation like this arises,” Albus told her gently. “When we do get a reason, it usually doesn’t make much sense. When the potion wears off, the feelings that it produces won't stay. I don't think some realize that.”“We'll keep looking into this and see what we can find, “ Minerva assured them. “Don't worry about Harry. He's been given the antidote and will be fine. It'll just take a week.”“Can we see him? I don't mean stay, but just pop in and say hi?” Ginny asked.Face taking on a firm look, Minerva shook her head, “No. No one will be allowed to go in. Unlike some love potions that are triggered by the name on the card sent, this is done with a phrase of some kind. As we have no way of figuring out what it is, we can't chance someone accidentally saying it. He has to be left alone. It's nothing to worry about. He's going to sleep through most of it. With all he's doing, I imagine the rest will do him good anyway.”“Alright,” Hermione sighed. “If something goes wrong, you'll tell us, right?”“We will,” Albus told her gently, smiling. “If you hear anything odd at all, let us know, please.”“We will,” Ginny assured him with a nod. After ushering the students out, Minerva removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes in a tired way. “Filius and I had no luck tracing anything. I take it the feelers to the shops that actually dare carry this potion got not results?”“No,” Albus sighed, shaking his head in a dejected way. “I didn't expect it to, honestly. All I got were denials that they would carry such a thing though I know they do.”“I thought as much,” Minerva told him with a sigh. “He'll be fine, that's all that matters. The antidote has already been given, so he just needs for the effects to wear off. When he's back to normal, I'll talk with him about double checking what he receives in this area and teach him the spells needed. That way it doesn't happen again. It's a case of closing the barn door after the unicorns are out, but it might prevent it from happening again.”“That's wise, yes. I imagine he'll be more on his toes after this,” Albus sighed, shaking his head. He didn't like this turn of events and wondered if might be related to some other things going on. After all, he knew that potion could be used to do more than make someone infatuated with you. It could work for other things as well. Settling back, stroking his beard, he said, “Maybe a short course for all our students in detecting such things is in order. If it happened to Harry, it could take place with others. We know he is more cautious than most of our students about such areas.”“Good idea,” Minerva told him, nodding. Putting her glasses on, she said, straightening up, “I'll get with Filius and Thorfinn to see what we can do here to teach them. Even our younger ones can learn the most simple of them. It can only help in the future and may prevent someone else from ending up in this situation.”“Do that, Minerva,” Albus said, standing. “I'll let you handle it.” Seeing her nod, he then made his way to the door. He had much to do, but needed a nap. He was so tired anymore. With all that needed to be done before the end came, he had to conserve his energy the best he could.
Huffing at her cousin, Narcissa fought the urge to roll her eyes at him then gave him a rap on his head with her wand. “Hold still, Sirius! This is hard enough. You fidgeting all over is not helping anything!”
Chuckling, Sirius shook his head. “I can't help it, Cissy! Whatever it is you’re doing there tickles.” Sitting there, bare chested, he was letting her work with that complicated mass of goop she was learning to apply. However, whatever she was doing with that whatever that would be put over the burn to protect it tickled like hell every time she used the spell on it to make it mold to his chest.Glowering at her cousin, she sighed. Honestly? It was a little funny to see him squirming around, chuckling. Tapping her foot, she said, “Just hold still while I try to get this right.”“I'm trying, I really am!” Sirius snorted, eyes twinkling. “Just—make it tickle less!”Letting out an exasperated sigh, Narcissa went back to trying to apply what was needed, shaking her head at him snorting as she cast the spell. Giving him a poke in the ribs with her finger as she finally got laid right, she said, “It's on. Now hold still so I can work on layering this.”“I'm trying! I promise!” He chuckled, grinning.“You are still impossible,” she told him, a small smile turning up the corners of her mouth.“That will never, ever change,” he told her with a winning grin.“I didn't think it would,” she said, starting to layer the makeup on in the order she was told.“That was one of the things you always loved about me, even if you wouldn't admit it,” he told her with a roguish grin.Unable to help herself, Narcissa smiled softly then conceded, “Maybe.” Straightening up, she looked at what she already accomplished, nodding. So far, so good. Glancing at the young man on the bed, he still appeared to be asleep. Shaking her head and sighing, she went back to work on the next layer. “You would do anything for him, wouldn't you?”“Just like you would for Draco,” Sirius told her softly.Nodding, understanding that, she said, “Good.”“I'm his godfather for a reason, you know,” he told her, looking over at Harry.“You were always so protective of those you cared about,” she observed, brow furrowing as she tried to get the makeup on right.Looking down, watching what she was doing, Sirius shook his head, “You sure you're actually going to be able to teach him how to apply this goop? It looks like unlearnable magic to me!”Chuckling a little herself, she said, “I will. It would be easier if he knew the basics beforehand, of course, but he should be able to pick it up quickly.”“How you lot can do this crap to your face every day is beyond me,” Sirius told her with a sigh. “Looks like way too much work and far too complicated to me.”“It's something you learn when you're young and go from there,” she explained, taking a step back and looking.“I tend to agree with Black on this topic,” Tom said from the doorway where he was leaning against the jamb, arms folded over his chest, shaking his head at what he was seeing.Giving a respectful nod to her Lord, Narcissa gave a soft snort, “It would probably be easier to work with this part on someone that wasn't ticklish! You men appreciate the effect it gives and just don't understand that it takes work to make it look like that.”“Hey, I didn't realize I was this ticklish until you started,” Sirius laughed. “I'm not used to someone doing this to me.”Stepping closer, giving a snort at what was said, Tom looked over what she was doing critically. Liking what he was seeing though it appeared she wasn't done, he said, “It may take some time for Harry to learn to do this and you'll have to work with him on it. Hopefully, he won't have to do it for long and can get it somewhat close.”“If he has the week and comes out of this in the next day or so, he should be able to.” Sirius said, looking down to watch what Cissy was doing. It was fascinating since he hadn't ever really paid much attention to women and how they did makeup.“I think, once I know what I'm doing with it and get some more practice, I can easily teach him. They showed me how to do this, of course, but being shown and actually doing it are two different things,” Narcissa told him distractedly.“Well, your cousin has volunteered to be your guinea pig until you get it right,” Tom told her, smirking slightly. This was rather amusing to watch actually, especially after the stresses of the last twenty-four hours.“I did not!” Sirius laughed, shaking his head. “I will, though. This is actually rather fascinating to watch, when she isn't tickling me that is.”Getting the next layer on right, Narcissa stepped back and looked at it critically then nodded slowly. She thought she knew what she was doing now.Looking at his sleeping lover, Tom asked, “Any more signs of waking?”Glancing at Harry, Sirius said, “He seems to be stirring a little more than he was. At least I think he is. It might be wishful thinking on my end there. He has mumbled a couple things, though. That I'm sure of.”Liking that, Tom gave a sigh. “He's probably starting to come around slightly. Good. Has the medi-witch been in to apply the cream?”“She did and that did cause another reaction. It was even a bit more than last time,” Sirius said, looking at his godson. “I don't like the fact it hurts, but the reaction is good. Any idea with that how long it'll be before he does come around?”“I really don't know. I would say he'll be awake within the next forty-eight hours, probably. There may be some disorientation after that. It's more of a wait and see thing with it,” Tom explained, eyes locked on Harry. Not saying anything, Sirius nodded, looking at his godson. Letting out a startled yelp as the spell tickled once more, he chuckled, “Make it tickle less!”Huffing again, rolling her eyes, Narcissa shook her head and continued on with what she was doing.Shaking his head, amused, Tom said, “I was just coming up to check on him. If you need me, send an elf.” Snorting as Black got a rap on the head with Narcissa's wand for wiggling too much, he walked out, fighting not to grin slightly.
Lost in a shifting array of very strange dreams that seemed to have an overlying layer of pain in them, Harry struggled to understand what they meant. Like most dreams, the stranger ones anyway, these seemed to make no sense. Some of them were fairly coherent in that he could at least place elements of them to something he knew about, like his relationship with Tom, others made no sense to him at all.
As he seemed to drift through them endlessly, he was becoming more aware of some things around him, something that almost felt like he was waking up, though what he was picking up made no sense. Like Sirius protesting against having makeup of some kind put on him and saying it tickled. That was strange to even contemplate. As he seemed to swim closer to the surface of something, there was a voice talking to him. It seemed to speak in a way that indicted they were from the past, with a different syntax than what was used now. There was much said to him about some things, but the only thing that stood out was that he had two of the Hallows now and that the third would come to him when the time was right and he called to it. Then he would take his rightful place as the Lord of Death. He and Tom would then accomplish the Dark Lord’s task. He would ensure Tom succeeded. Though wanting to ask questions and having them on the tip of his tongue, the dream shifted again to something else completely different, making him sigh. It was so confusing.
Coming back in after washing the goop of his chest so Cissy could give it another go when she got back from checking on Bella, the first thing Sirius did was glance at the bed. Eyes wide, he grinned to see Harry propped up slightly on one elbow, rubbing his eyes a little. Though he looked to be very out of it, eyes having that look that told you someone wasn't really with it, Sirius was overjoyed. Calling an elf, he sent them to find Voldemort then walked over and sat down, reaching out to rub Harry's head. “You alright, Harry?”
“Chest burns,” Harry managed to slur out, shaking his head, trying to get rid of some of the almost overwhelming feeling of disorientation.“I bet it does,” Sirius told him, running his fingers through his hair, unable to stop grinning.Unable to shake that feeling, Harry gave a huff and said, “Loo.”Not having expected that, Sirius gave an uncomfortable chuckle, “Yeah, I think someone is going to have to help you there, Harry. And it's not going to be me. I don't think you can make it on your own, so wait for Tom. He will. I think he'd hex me if I did it.”
“I would,” Tom said, stepping into the room, looking relieved to see Harry sitting up and awake. “Let me take him.”“I'll let you do that,” Sirius snorted, feeling much better than he had in the last twenty-four hours. “He says his chest burns.”
“I bet it does,” Tom sighed, walking over to the bed, not sure what to do here. Shaking his head at to how out of it his lover was, he said, “Go to the medical wing and have the medi-witch give you something for pain. I'll get one of the elves to bring him up some food to take with it. From the look of this, he's probably going to go back to sleep soon.”Nodding vigorously, Sirius grabbed his shirt then said, “I'll be right back.” Slipping it on as he dashed out the door, making sure his glamour ring was on, he headed for the medical wing, still grinning as he went.Crouching down, Tom gently helped Harry to the edge of the bed and into a sitting position, shaking his head as he did. As disoriented and out of it as his lover was, there was no way he was going to even attempt a trip to the bathroom. Conjuring a bedpan, he held it up and said, “We're going to do it this way.”Nodding, Harry shifted around the best he could, relieved to feel Tom's hand on his back as he was having problems staying upright then managed to do what was needed with a soft sigh.
Once Harry was done, Tom vanished it then helped him sit up at the head of the bed, back propped against the headboard. Reaching out, he ran his fingers through Harry's hair and gave it a gentle tug before saying, voice kept low, “You are never to scare me that way again, do you understand?”Giving an uneven chuckle, Harry replied, “Will try.” Rubbing his eyes, he shook his head and groaned when the fuzzies just weren't going to go away. Shutting his eyes again, he leaned his head back, wincing as he felt his chest burn more as it seemed to pull slightly. “Hurts,” he sighed.“I know,” Tom said softly. “We'll give you something for it shortly. You should eat a little though.”Nodding, not sure if he could manage that, Harry sighed, feeling sleep tugging at him once more. He remembered the green spell coming at him, knowing what it was and some things before that, but it seemed jumbled and confusing. Shaking his head, he muttered, voice uneven, “Sirius?”“He's fine,” Tom told him. “You saw that. Everyone but you is fine.”“Good,” Harry mumbled. There was much that he needed to think about, he knew that, but couldn't get his thoughts organized in a way that he could manage. Huffing, he didn't know what to say to get across his frustration over this.Rubbing his head, Tom soothed, “You just rest. Let me handle everything. It's being taken care of.”“So confusing,” was all Harry said, shaking his head slightly.“I imagine it is,” Tom chuckled softly. “It'll get better.” Leaning forward, he placed a soft kiss on the lightning bolt scar he had left so long ago. “I'll protect you until you feel better.”Leaning into the kiss, Harry nodded, smiling a little, eyes shut.
