Chapter Fifty: Significationem amicitiae (The meaning of Friendship)
Lily stood on the doorstep to HQ worrying at her finger nails, she was terrified that James and the others had got hurt, she tried to force the mental image of their battered bodies lying forgotten somewhere but the idea was impossible to get rid of.
“They will be fine, I’m almost certain.”
She turned her head to see Dumbledore standing in the doorway behind her with his enigmatic smile. “Yes…yes they’re probably fine and I’m fretting over nothing but I…” She trailed off and turned her gaze back out to the street. “I can’t help but feel like something is wrong.”
Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak but before he could there was a series of loud pop’s and several battered looking people appeared in the road. One of them was on his knees before what could only have been a body. Lily heard James’ cry; “No!” And before she could stop herself she was running towards them, her hair flying behind her as panic ignited her body.
“Lily! Lily go back insi-” Remus only had time to register surprise as there was a series of massive explosions, they rocketed up the street accompanied by screams of terror. “Lily!” He screamed as Lily turned to her right, her feet faltering as a line of black robed figures began marching towards them. Remus looked from them and back to Lily before gazing at James who was busy trying to keep Sirius’ pulse beating, Peter was whimpering in terror as his eyes darted around. He had no choice. He broke into a run, his feet carrying him towards the red haired woman who was now facing the enemy with her wand in hand and a determined, if terrified, look in her green eyes. He reached her just in time as several, powerful spells whizzed over their heads.
James looked up from the white face of his boyfriend, his eyes took a moment to focus on the fight ahead of him as other Order members rushed to their aid. He blinked and took a shuddery breath, he looked back down at Sirius and ran fingers through his bloody hair, slowly he leaned forward and pressed his lips to Sirius’. He was as cold as death. “Stay alive, Siri.” He breathed and leapt to his feet, he removed his wand from his pocket and glared at the encroaching Death Eaters. “Peter, look after Sirius. Do not leave his side, understand?!”
“JAMES!” Lily’s shout echoed across the street forcing James into a sprint, he reached her side and began firing curses into the crowd of Death Eaters. “How did they find us?!” Lily asked as she deflected a streak of crimson light.
“Followed us…” James gasped, he made a downward slash with his wand and his opponent collapsed. “…Grabbed hold of my robes before we could Dissapperate…fuck!” He pushed Lily down as several jets of light whizzed above their heads, the two looked at each other. Lily could see blood on James’ face and hands, blood that couldn’t have been his own.
“Sirius! Is he…?” She began but a crash and another explosion made the earth tremble.
“He’s…h-he’s…I don’t know…” James said.
“It’s Dumbledore and some bloody Aurors! Let’s retreat!”
The cry came from their enemies, Lily and James both looked up as the fight died down. They watched the black robed figures popping out of existence and Lily sighed heavily as James helped her to her feet. His eyes had yet to lose that manic, terrified look and before she could ask him what had happened he had dashed off to Sirius’ side. He saw Sirius’ body lying on the tarmac and fell to his knees beside it, immediately he began checking for signs of life. His hands shook violently as his wand fell from his numb fingers. “Sirius…Sirius please…” He whispered as his fingers found his friends throat, he held his breath and gazed into that far too pale face for what seemed like an eternity. The skin beneath his fingers was as cold and still as stone. James’ heart stuttered to a stop. He began trembling as his mouth opened and closed, he desperately sought the air his body needed to scream but it wasn’t coming. He shuddered violently and finally he took a deep breath and it stuck again, his throat felt as if it was closing over and he bent over the body of his lover. He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, resting his forehead against Sirius’ unmoving chest.
Remus and Lily ran over to the pair, Remus stumbled when he saw James bowing over the body. He fell to his knees, his wand falling from his fingers to clatter on the ground as he gazed at the scene before him. The dust from the explosions drifted aimlessly around the street, curling around Sirius and James like tentacles, the sunlight was cold upon his skin as he stared and let numbness creep through him. His skin tingled unpleasantly as he realised with a horrible, sickening jolt that he had lost one of his best friends…
And then James screamed. It was the sound of a man driven insane by grief, it was ragged, desperate noise that made Remus fall onto all fours and lower his head, he had blood on his hands but he couldn’t do anything accept stare at them. A soft hand rested on his head, he recognised it as Lily’s but it held no comfort for him. “S-Sirius…P-Padfoot…” He gasped and clenched his hands into fists with a moan.
James slowly lifted his head and sat up, he gazed at the sky as tears fell down his cheeks. “…we promised…” He whispered in a soft voice. “We were supposed to d-die together…”
People swirled around him, but Remus only had eyes for his two best friends. He had no energy but he managed to force himself to stumble forward to James’ side, only to collapse beside him once again. Sirius’ face was too white. His lips blue tinged as the sun cast a golden glow over the scene. He put a shaking hand on James’ shoulder, giving the only comfort he could as he felt his world crumbling around him.
“Make way! Make way!”
Neither boy turned around at the sound of that voice, even as Dumbledore reached them and knelt at Sirius’ side. He ignored both Remus and James as he inspected the wound on Sirius’ face, his blue eyes were narrowed behind his glasses and everything seemed to have fallen silent. Suddenly he looked up at Lily who was stood behind both friends. “Would you be so kind as to see these two boys into the house and give them something for shock?”
“O-of course, Albus…” Lily placed a hand on James’ shoulder but he shrugged her off. “James…”
“No. No I’m staying by him. He’d do the same for me! I will not ever leave his side again!”
Remus looked at him and wrapped him in a rough embrace. “James, you can’t do anything…not now…Not now he…” He choked a little but pushed it aside. “Please, just do as Albus says.”
Dumbledore sighed and stood up. “Alastor, please take Sirius into the house. He is in desperate need of Medical attention, call Poppy if you would, I need her expertise.”
Alastor said nothing as he picked up Sirius’ body as if it weighed nothing, then began taking him into the house. Dumbledore turned on the distraught friends. “Sirius is still alive, barely, but he is hanging on by a thread. Please, get inside and get your own wounds treated. We will do whatever we can.”
James felt as if something had hit him in the chest, he let out a gust of breath and bent forward, his head pressed into his hands. “H-He’s…?” He managed and felt Dumbledore’s hand on his head, he looked up and saw a tense smile on the man’s face.
“He is alive, for now.”
“Oh thank…Merlin…I…” Remus exclaimed and he let out a strained laugh, a short bark that sounded far too much like Sirius. It released some of his paralysis and he stood, dragging James to his feet and grabbing his head in both his hands. They pressed their foreheads together and took a few shallow breaths; James gripped both of Remus’ wrists.
“He’s alive. He’s…he’s alive…” James muttered, as if trying to convince himself. They smiled weakly at each other and opened their eyes at the same time.
“Then let’s make sure he stays that way.” Remus said and drew out of James’ embrace.

Everything was so bloody white.
That was Sirius’ first thought as he pulled himself upright, he had woken to find himself surrounded by fog and formless shapes. He blinked to clear his vision and slowly raised his hand, his fingers touched his face and he realised it was whole. With a sigh he stood up and realised he was naked, not that nudity bothered him but he wasn’t entirely sure where he was and being found naked and wandless by Death Eaters would be most inconvenient. He turned slowly on the spot and saw a pile of grey robes where before there had been none, with a shrug he put them on and began exploring his surroundings with his eyes. It was an odd place to find himself, not very definitive as far as landmarks went. He raised an eyebrow at a cloud of that strange glittery white fog, but it held no answers to his odd predicament. He wondered, a little belatedly, whether he shouldn’t be panicking as he was obviously thoroughly lost but he simply didn’t have the energy. It was then that he heard the footsteps…
Tap, tap, tap, tap…
Like someone wearing dance shoes on a wooden floor, he spun on the spot, robes flaring around his ankles as he turned to see a familiar face staring at him through the mist. The fog itself had begun to form into familiar shapes, dark walls, low ceilings and old fashioned gas lamps. He took a sharp breath as his brother smiled at him from the end of the entrance hall of Grimmauld Place.
“Sirius…” Regulus said, his voice far away and distorted, but it sent pangs of terrible pain into Sirius’ heart.
“Reg! Reg…I-I’m sorry…”
“Sirius…” Regulus lifted his arm and beckoned, his smile the one he used when they were younger. The smile he used when Sirius had made him laugh and distracted him from his fears. “Sirius…” He called again and Sirius couldn’t stop his feet from taking him closer.
“Reg…” He whispered, the sound harsh in his ears. He realised Regulus was getting further and further away so he broke into a run. His feet pounded the ancient carpet but he wasn’t making any progress and anyway, since when had the hallway to his hated home been so fucking long? He gritted his teeth and continued to run…He reached out, his fingers almost brushing those of his brothers…
Something grabbed him. Wrapped him so tightly he couldn’t move. A scream was ripped from his lips as he tried to fight the thing that was trying to tear him away from his brother, he kicked and struggled but to no avail. “REG! REGULUS! REG!” He screamed so loudly his voice broke. Before everything went black he heard a whisper…whether it was his imagination or not he wasn’t sure.
“It’s not time yet, brother. Go back to them…go back and be loved…I promise you, we’ll never be apart again.”

“…Reg…Regulus…nnno…Reg…come back…” Sirius woke to his own muttering, his eyes flickering open to reveal a familiar ceiling. He blinked sluggishly and groaned as he realised how thirsty he was. Slowly he turned his head to the left and saw a table with a glass of water on it, he forced himself to sit upright and grabbed the glass. He downed it in one and gasped as his tongue seemed become less dry, but it wasn’t enough. He gazed around the room, it was his own, in his own flat. He blinked as he realised someone was sleeping fitfully on his bed with him, he saw a head of messy black hair and his lips curled into a fond, loving smile. “Jamie…” He croaked and lay at his friends side, he wrapped him in his arms and buried his face in his neck. “James.”
“…mmm…Sirius…” James murmered softly, he turned within the confines of his lovers embrace and opened his eyes. His smile began to widen as he realised he wasn’t dreaming, he was positively beaming when he devoured Sirius’ face with his eyes. Before Sirius could speak he embraced him, his arms more of a choke hold around his recovering lover. “Fuck!” He gasped and buried his face in Sirius’ hair. “Fucking hell…fuck! Don’t…don’t ever fucking scare me like that again you bastard!”
Sirius choked and when James loosened his grip he tipped his head to the side. “What happened?” He asked, his voice rough from lack of use. “How long have I been out?”
James’ face fell and he pushed hair back from Sirius’ puffy eyes. “A week…Siri, you nearly died.”
Sirius looked supremely unconcerned by this. “How’s my face? Any scarring?”
“No. No scars…Sirius, did you hear what I said?”
“I did.” Sirius’ smile softened. “You’re still alive, I’m in your arms…why should I worry about something that might have happened? It didn’t James. I’m still here.”
“I nearly lost you.” James’ voice broke, the hands on the sides of Sirius’ face tightened.
Sirius sobered and pressed his hand against James’ heart. “No, you’ll never lose me, Jamie.”
“I-I…I can’t go on without you…Siri, when I saw you lying there, so close to death I considered just taking a knife from the kitchen and cutting my own throat. I don’t want to live without you, do you understand?”
Sirius nodded, he understood. He couldn’t imagine a life without James, he didn’t want to. “Either way, it doesn’t matter now. We’re alive, we’re together…I love you, James.”
