Meanwhile, back at the ranch…
Severus appeared in the Dark Lord’s throne room, in the midst of what was an in-progress Meeting, and his blood ran cold as he remembered the few other times this had happened.
None of them had ended well for the person Called in late.
“My Lord?” He questioned.
“Am I, Severus? Are you truly loyal to me? Or is it all a game to you, playing Dumbledore and I for fools while you live your half-truths and outright lies!” Voldemort hissed at him, clearly angry.
“I’m afraid I don’t understand, My Lord; I am your man, I have always been loyal!” This was bad.
Voldemort laughed, and there was a dark, malicious sort of humour in the sound. “Severus, I am not a complete lackwit! Young Pansy has sent some interesting correspondence to her father of late. Something about you being stolen from Draco, by none other than Harry Potter! I have heard you are the boy’s mate?”
Severus swallowed. “Dumbledore watches us closely; nothing has come of it yet, and I have only limited time with the boy—”
“Time enough to bring him to me if you had planned to. But no matter, you will still do so. We will keep you. Bait a trap, as it were. After a few weeks of you missing, I will send him a vision. The boy will come to rescue you, but by then, I will have my men guarding all the entrances to the manor. He will be caught and brought to me, and you will both die at my hand. The traitor and his creature.” Voldemort sneered. “It will be a fitting end.” He waved a hand. “Take him to the dungeons, Rudolphus, but leave him intact. He will be kept fed and watered enough to live, but we want him weakened. You may give him a few lashes if you wish.” He permitted.
Rudolphus smiled. “Thank you, My Lord.” He said with relish, grabbing Severus’ arm and yanking the man up roughly. He took his wand and pocketed it.
Severus let himself be pulled into the dungeons and hung his head as Rudolphus stripped him and chained him to the wall in manacles.
“Brace yourself. This will not be pleasant.” He said.
Severus gritted his teeth in preparation, and the lashing began.
*****
“He’s not back.” Harry said at breakfast the next morning, chin propped in one hand.
“Indeed not.” Lucius said heavily. “We may need to launch a rescue effort.” He said. “At least we know where the Dark Lord is.”
Harry frowned. “Where? I didn’t know we knew.”
Lucius sighed. “He is using my home as his base of operations. At least that is where he was last time I knew for sure. I believe he is still there.”
Harry snorted. “Probably is.” He yawned, and Draco made a sound of disgust.
“Could you keep your mouth closed, Potter? Or at least cover it, for Merlin’s sake!” Draco sniped.
Harry glared at him venomously. “Little, you little snotrag, I’m already in a bad mood because I’m tired, I don’t like you, and you are in my house! You’ll keep a civil tongue in your head when speaking to me or you can go back to Hogwarts. Alone.” He added.
Draco’s mouth snapped shut and he glared mulishly as breakfast was served.
“Mrs. Weasley, I’m afraid I’m going to need meals in my room at night again until Severus comes back and can make my potion. I may need to rescue him myself, but him not coming back is simply not an option.” Harry said.
“Unless he’s dead already.” Lucius said softly, and Harry’s world tilted on its axis alarmingly as he considered the possibility.
“He’s not.” Harry said. “I would know.” He added.
Seeing the fire in his eyes, Lucius simply nodded. “As you say.” He agreed. And what did he know? Perhaps the vampire would indeed have felt the death of its mate, there were few enough that had lost their mates through murder while separated.
They ate and all went their separate ways, Lucius following Harry after the questioning, almost pleading look the young man had shot him as breakfast ended.
“So,” Harry said, sitting on his bed wearily, “Severus is still gone.”
“It is alarming. And not a good sign.” He agreed.
“I need to learn to Apparate so I can go save him. But how will I get past the Wards?” Harry asked.
Lucius sighed. “I cannot key you into them, but perhaps there is another way. You are taking blood only from me, correct?” He checked.
“For now, yes. Everybody else tastes like ash, or there’s Blaise, who tastes even worse, so I have you right now. I could probably Feed from someone else, but it would not be pleasant in the least. I’d rather it be you.” Harry said with a small smile.
Lucius chuckled. “If you Feed exclusively from me for a few days, you will only have my blood in your system. You will probably be able to wear and use the Head of Household ring I have if my blood is all you have. And then you can bypass the Wards and make it into the manor.”
Harry nodded. “Then let’s keep it this way. Until or unless he comes back.” He said.
“Yes, a good plan.”
Harry sat on his bed. “I need to sleep now.” He mumbled.
Lucius sat beside him. “Feed first. Then you may sleep, and I will draw you a diagram of the parts of the manor you will need to know; My rooms and the route from there to the dungeons, where he will likely be kept. We will go over layout and the fastest way through the manor when you wake, and then we will need to start you on learning to Apparate.” He said.
Harry sighed and nuzzled at Lucius’ neck. “I miss Severus.” He said longingly before he bit and drank.
“We all do.” Lucius agreed. “Which is why we are going to do what we can to bring him back. We will spend every waking moment working toward that end. We will both have him back soon.”
Harry licked the wounds closed and lay back. “I’ll see you in the evening.” He slurred, weariness taking him over as the sun rose higher in the sky, forcing his body into slumber bit by bit.
“I will see you when you wake. Sleep now, you have much work to do come nightfall.” Lucius said, getting up and beginning to draw the layout of the manor’s pertinent areas.
Harry would need to know exactly where he was going.
This was a dangerous rescue, but Severus needed them, and neither one of them was willing to let him go just yet.
*****
“What if I can’t?!” Harry snapped, pride wounded at the fact that not only had he splinched himself, but he’d done it with witnesses!
“You can, boy, and you’ll need to do it fast, ‘less you want our spy dead!” Moody snarled. Dumbledore had let him know about the situation when it became apparent that Harry needed a proper Apparition tutor known for motivating people effectively. He knew about the vampire and the incubus, but not about the Ethologus.
Dumbledore had only trusted him so far.
“He’s not spying after this! His cover is obviously blown, he’s not going back! I won’t have other people dying in my name anymore!” Harry shouted, tears in his eyes.
Remus knelt beside him, watching Lucius carefully applying dittany to Harry’s pinkie finger. “Harry, we all know how much you care for others, especially Severus, but until you can Apparate, we have no idea if he even can be saved. Lucius can’t go, he’d be killed, but you have a trump card we can use, it needs to be you. You can do this. You have to.” He coaxed.
Harry nodded and flexed his finger, then stood. “Alright, so one more time!” He raised his wand, and everyone stepped back, watching to see if he could make it across the room, this time without missing any bits.
*****
“Alright, you’re ready.” Lucius said. “Just remember to stay in the shadows and be quiet. You’ll need to find his wand. Usually the person tasked with guarding him will have it.”
Harry nodded. “Alright. Have my room ready, I’ll bring him directly here.” He said. “Have Pomfrey on standby.”
Lucius chuckled. “She is already here, waiting. I will bring her up here to wait as soon as you leave.”
“Don’t let anyone into the room until I am back. It needs to be clear so I can land wherever I need to. I’m not sure where I will end up, and I don’t want to land on anyone.” Harry said wryly.
“Everything will be fine, love. Go now.” Lucius said, dropping one more kiss onto Harry’s lips. “We will be ready and waiting.”
Harry nodded and shifted, glad that he had quickly grasped wandless Apparition.
He disappeared and reappeared in Lucius’ bedroom. He flattened himself, slid under the door, and followed his nose.
*****
Severus was tired, but he knew sleeping right now would be a bad idea. He was chained to the wall, arms manacled above his head, being force-fed only what he needed to survive this torment every few days by a house-elf.
He saw a dark shape approaching him, formless and billowing, and his heart rate spiked alarmingly.
As it drew nearer, he saw it pause and study him.
“Harry?” He whispered through a throat gone bone-dry some time ago from lack of water.
He heard his name as a whisper on the breeze, Harry’s voice carried to him. My love, it added, and Severus nearly wept.
“No, Harry, leave! You can’t be here; this will all be for nothing! We can’t lose you, and you’re not ready!” He whispered brokenly.
Harry shifted form and held up his hand. “I’ll be fine.” He said, showing Severus a ring.
Lucius’ ring. The Head of Household ring that would allow him to bypass the wards, but…
“How?” He whispered.
Harry flushed. “You weren’t there, so I’ve been feeding exclusively from Lucius. With only his blood in me, I’m able to wear the ring. And he taught me to Apparate.” He demonstrated his ability by Disapparating and appearing inside Severus’ cell. “Don’t worry; this was a search-and-rescue only. I’m not here to kill him yet.” He opened the manacles and gently freed Severus, holding tightly to him. “Don’t fight me, and don’t let go.” He said, then they disappeared.
They reappeared in Grimmauld Place, Harry calling for Poppy before leading Severus to his bed.
“You’re not going to be able to leave for a while;” He explained. “My instincts are going a little haywire right now.”
Severus sighed, but nodded. He could stay with the vampire for a few days.
Poppy came in and started casting every scan she could think of. “Malnourished, dehydrated, he's taken at least one cruciatus, and he has a broken wrist… The rest are superficial, and none of the lash marks he has are infected. Those will simply need a salve—”
“That I will apply.” Harry said firmly.
Poppy snorted. “Yes, dear, you can do anything physical needed, under my instruction.” She agreed, knowing his instincts would make anything else impossible right now. “You are to let him heal!” She added.
Harry glared at her. “I will!” He snapped.
“No feeding from him until he is no longer dehydrated!”
Harry slumped. “Okay.” He muttered sullenly.
Poppy smiled and parted his arm. “It is for the best.” She said then got to work fixing Severus' broken wrist and handing over a nutrient potion and a nerve restorative to Harry, who helped Severus take them. “He needs water next. Make sure he drinks slowly, and don’t let it be too cold. He doesn’t need a shock to his system right now.” She said. “Room temperature water.”
Harry nodded and filled the glass next to the bed, which he had put there in preparation for his mate's return.
Poppy touched it to feel the temperature and nodded. “Slowly.” She repeated. “And make sure he gets a glass whenever he wants one. Once he has recovered from his fast he can drink at his own pace, but don’t let him rush it.” She said as Harry cradled Severus' head and helped him drink the water.
“This needs to be applied to his wounds.” She handed over a salve. “It will heal, and if it scars, we will deal with that later. It would only be cosmetic.” She said.
Harry nodded.
“For now, clean and salve his lashes, and get him comfortable. I will be back in later to check on his vital signs. If he is stable at that point, he will just need rest. But until those lashes are dealt with, I cannot check for further damage.”
“Alright. I’ll deal with this. Can we be alone?” Harry asked.
Poppy nodded. “Yes, let us know when he is resting.” She said.
“Thank you, I will.” Harry brushed a lock of hair back from Severus’ eyes. “Don’t worry, everything will be fine. I need you to turn over for me.” He said gently.
Severus obeyed, wincing.
“He will be a right terror when he is feeling better.” Lucius told Harry as he left the room.
“Good.” Harry muttered, partially to himself. “Then I’ll know he’s getting healthy again.”
He set to work cleaning the lash marks.
Severus was not going back there again.
He’d make sure of it.
