A short time later found them at Ardyn's house, located in the higher end of the Aquarian suburbs. "Nice place," Roark said, his eyes moving over the single-story home.
"I bought it last yahren {year}. Come in." He opened the door, motioning for him to enter first. "Drink?" he asked leading them into the main living area of the house. Going to the sideboard, he poured them both a measure of whiskey, handing one of the tumblers to Roark, sipping from his own, hazel eyes watching him.
Roark, not used to drinking anything but a very light, fruity red wine, which Ardyn was very well aware of, took a sip from the glass. 'Be careful with this,' came the thought into his mind. 'You aren't used to drinking something this strong. It'll go straight to your head much quicker.'
Which he was already very well aware of, not at all sure where that voice, let alone whose it was, came from. Especially as it did not feel like his. It wasn't Harry's, besides, Harry was rather...busy at the moment.
"He was the last of the team to die," he spoke quietly, looking up from the rich amber liquid. "I'm going to have to call his family in the morning."
"I can take care of that, if you would like," Ardyn told him, moving to sit at his side on the couch.
Roark gave a single nod. "If you wish," he said, looking over at him. "I need to call Logan, as well as Alexei and the others. Kili is calling Fili to come meet him at the Aquarian and walk home with him."
"Good. It's best if none of us go anywhere on our own. It's also probably best if he weren't alone for tonight, though I thought the rest of the Durins would have been there."
"They would have been, I'm sure, but Alexei and Desmond were unavailable, as were Jordan and Tyler. Corporal Merchant said that Logan's communicator had been turned off--"
"It was WHAT?" came back instantly, clearly surprised. "He knows better than that!" he exclaimed even as he thought, 'Damn, that was a missed opportunity.' Though he would have had to know where he was going, or gone to have made use of it.
Roark nodded as a frown appeared, his head tilting slightly. "I'll be talking to him about it tomorrow," he said, lifting the glass and sipping. "I've been thinking."
"About?"
"I want to send him and Kili home. I'm not going to allow them to be murdered."
An unreadable look entered Ardyn's eyes as he looked at Roark. "They're warriors, Roark, and they know full well the risks they take every day they put on the uniform."
"Yes, Ardyn, I am aware," he said with a sudden feeling that he would be saving BOTH their lives if he did just as he wanted to. "I'll talk to Harry, Severus, and the others tomorrow before I make any kind of a move. I just can't help that I feel I can't let it happen. We grew up together, you know. We've all been friends since we could walk, and I certainly DON'T want to have to call Commander Thorin and Sire Bilbo with the news their youngest son had been murdered. Any more than I'd like to call the Durin's to tell them that on top of Kale, they've lost Logan. They would not handle it well."
"They're a family of warriors, Rory, and know--"
"I'm not going to allow it to happen, Ardyn!" he snarled out suddenly. "Not if I have any way to stop it."
"Okay, okay," he said, raising a hand in a placating manner. "What is it you would like to do then?"
A sigh. "I'm not sure just yet. I want to talk to the others before I make any solid decisions. What I would LIKE to do is send them home with Tristyn's body, as well as the progress reports I've completed."
The feeling that he would be saving his best friend's lives if he did just that rolled through him as he raised the tumbler to sip from it, catching sight of Ardyn's look of satisfaction as it burned its way to his stomach. Suddenly, he remembered the disks, and that Logan knew of their location.
'Don't tell him about those disks,' came the thought, knowing it would only be another thing they didn't share with the man none of them trusted. "You realize of course, that IF you send them home, that will leave us with only eight people to deal with Riddle."
"I know," he murmured, swirling what was left of the whiskey, wondering about the look of satisfaction he had seen, and thinking, 'Well, it would leave Harry, myself, Severus, the four Durin's, and the two informants. Informants they still had no idea who they were. "Still, I think I'd like to get them off Aquaria."
"You also realize they'll likely be sent right back once they've reported on what happened?"
"Not if I can contrive some way to have them transferred," he answered as he set the glass down on the coffee table. He stood, moving to the double French doors that led out to his garden. "They've both been saying how they would like to be posted to a Battlestar, either the Galactica or the Solaria, where their cousin Roark is second in command, a Lt. Commander."
It was dark out there, and he couldn't see a thing beyond where the light of this room reached. "I think I'll talk to grandfather, to the Admiral," he turned to look at him, "and if you would be willing to try to pull a few strings--"he broke off, watching him come toward him. "I know it may not be any safer, what with the Cylons, or space pirates, but still--"
Fingers covered his lips, stopping him from saying any more. "You don't need to explain your reasoning, Roark. All you have to do is ask, and I will see what I can do," he said as he studied him, eyes moving over his face. "What about you?" he asked him softly. "Are you alright?"
"No, not particularly," he murmured, feeling himself being drawn inexplicably closer to him, a part of his mind trying to fight against Ardyn's move to draw him against him. "I just can't believe he's gone, you know? We had just gotten to be friends, and--"
He drew him against him slowly. "Don't do this to yourself, Rory," came softly. "This is not your fault."
"Oh, I know, all the same..." he drew in a slow deep breath, raising his eyes to Ardyn's, seeing the desire that was reflected there. "Ardyn, I don't--"
"Sh..." he murmured as he lowered his head, brushing his lips over Roark's as his hand slid around the back of his neck. He still couldn't believe that drug was actually working as he felt Roark begin to respond, brushing his lips a second, then a third time over Roark's, then taking them completely, his tongue moving to enter...
: No, : came the whisper suddenly into his clouded mind. : Roark, no. Are you really sure you want to go down this path with a man you don't...CAN'T trust? That you truthfully aren't even attracted to? Something is working to cloud your mind. THINK, Roark!'
Suddenly, Roark pulled himself free of not only the kiss, but of Ardyn's arms, moving away from him. "No," he said, sounding a little breathless. "I can't do this right now," he told him.
Ardyn nearly swore but stopped himself. Damn, the boy's strong will! "Why, Rory?" he asked in a soft, almost tender voice. "You can't deny you're attracted to me," he went on, moving to take a step, only to stop when Roark backed away from him. "You want me, Roark."
He shook his head. "No, I don't...can't. This isn't the right time for this. I'm also not at all sure I'm ready for this kind of step. My head is too clouded, and this is the kind of thing that needs thinking about before I let myself be with someone like that."
That said, he turned, moving to the door. "I'm sorry, Ardyn, but I have to go."
The door slid open at his approach, allowing him to all but flee into the night as Ardyn swore sharply, his entire body shaking with frustration. Fuck, he'd almost had Roark right where he'd wanted him. Under him as he fucked him hard into his mattress.
A chuckle sounded behind him which had Ardyn whirling, laser in hand, until he saw who it was. "Roderick," he said holstering his weapon.
"Well, that certainly went well. The boss ain't going to be pleased that you wasted that drug he gave you on a failed seduction attempt."
"It wasn't wasted. He's just a lot more strong-willed than I anticipated. More of the drug next time will take care of that. What do you want, Roderick?"
"IF you manage to get him alone again, and aside from hoping you'd actually succeed so that I could have a turn at him, I was sent to talk to you. Real shame you failed though. That boy is one tight piece of ass. I would have loved a chance at him, making him scream when I rammed into him."
A scowl appeared. "Sit," he snapped harshly, resisting the strong urge to kill the little suck-up. But if he did, Riddle would not be happy if he killed one of his current fuck toys. "Drink? What does Tom want?" he asked.
