Chapter 51 Into the nest
All through Saturday he fretted as to what she might be planning. The meeting with the vampires was not until next weekend so they had nothing out of the ordinary to do this weekend. He sat for almost an hour staring at the same piece of substandard homework without making a single red mark. Eventually he gave up, pushed it to one side and sat with his chin resting in his hands, thinking about Nina; Nina, when she ran through the halls laughing, Nina, when she was lying beneath him in his bed, Nina, when she was talking none stop about something that her attention, Nina, with their child at her breast, Nina in a wedding gown by his side. Nina. Nina. Nina.
“Gods I’m obsessed with her.” He muttered to himself.
Nina on the other hand was having a whale of a time with Albus, Minerva, Poppy and Argus. They were busy decorating the staff room with decorations, streamers, balloons and the like. Professor Flitwick arrived, pulled a roll of parchment from his pocket and showed it to Nina.
“Is this what you wanted dear?”
“Yes. It’s perfect Professor. Can you put it up there please.” Nina asked him excitedly, pointing at the empty space above the table. Filius removed his wand, enlarged the scroll and charmed it to hang from the ceiling over the food laden table in the centre of the room.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
38 SEVERUS 38
Minerva stood next to Nina as they looked at the banner. “I do hope your right about this Nina. Severus does not usually like to advertise when it is his birthday and he’s particularly sensitive about his age you know. He tends to hide away as a rule and he is just as likely to walk out of here as soon as he realises what we have done.”
“Don’t worry Professor, I’ll take full responsibility. I’ll also make sure he doesn’t leave in a hurry either.”
Minerva’s expression was somewhat dubious. “Well, I suppose if anyone can force him to stay it’s you. He’s certainly made it plain for all to see that he is taken with you. How are you going to get him in her this evening anyway?”
Nina blushed lightly but smiled at Minerva. “Oh I’m sure I’ll think of something.” Nina already knew how she was going to get Severus in here. The Potions Master hated being left out of the loop and if he thought something was going on without his knowledge he would do his utmost to find out what it was.
All during dinner that evening Albus, Minerva and Flitwick were talking quietly to each other behind their hands, causing Severus to raise his eyebrows, wondering what was going on. Looking up and down the table, he was convinced that eyes were watching him, even though as soon as he looked up they were quickly averted. When he and Nina were sitting on her sofa a couple of hours later, he asked if she had noticed anything strange at dinner.
“Can’t say I did, no. Why, should I have?”
“No. Probably just my imagination.” He told her.
‘Oh I hope he hasn’t guessed about the meeting in the staff room.’ Nina thought to herself as she casually picked up a book from the table that Severus had given up trying to read. Severus narrowed his eyes. “I have some work to do before we retire. It should not take too long. Can you amuse yourself for a while?”
She looked at him innocently. “Yeah sure. See you in a bit.”
He gave her a peck on the cheek and entered his study, closing the connecting door behind him. He waited only a minute to make sure that Nina did not attempt to follow him before quietly making his way into the dungeon corridor and headed for the staff room.
‘Silly chit still thinks I cannot pick up on all of her thoughts. And why are the staff having a meeting without me? Well they’re in for a shock.’ He thought snarkily. When he reached the staff room door he looked up and down the corridor, making sure no one was about and put his ear to the door. Silence. ‘Hmm. Must be using a silencing spell.’ Severus did not feel the small surge of magic changing his casual robes as they became his best dress robes as he opened the door to the darkened room.
The door slammed shut behind him, causing him to whip round suddenly, wand in hand as the torches suddenly flared to life and many voices shouted “Happy Birthday Severus.”
When the Potions Master turned to the crowded staff room and realised what was really going on he grabbed the door handle and tried to leave. It wouldn’t budge.
“It’s locked.” Said a familiar voice behind him. “It’s your party so you have to stay. Happy Birthday Severus.” Nina flung her arms around his neck and kissed him. He stood rigid and let her, more from shock then anything else and was only jolted out of his dazed state by the wolf whistle and cat call when Nina had pressed her lips to his.
“You … you did this?” He growled at her.
“Mm hm. And there’s not a thing you can do about it. Everybody’s come to wish you happy birthday. It would be rude to try and leave now. Oh and Severus.” He narrowed his eyes at her, one eyebrow raised in question. “There’s plenty of cold puddings on the table. You know, cold dessert.”
She gave him a wink and moved away, giving the others a chance to come and wish him many happy returns. Severus growled at her words but had no choice but to graciously accept the offered greetings and good wishes from the four dozen or so guests in attendance which included order members as well as staff.
He accepted gifts and cards, eventually beginning to smile as music played and the party got into full swing. A large glass of cognac was pressed into one hand as his other was taken and he was led to a smaller table by the window. “Will you open my present now?” Nina asked letting go and pointing to a large parcel set on top of the table. “I wrapped it myself by the way.
Severus stared at her a moment and back at the parcel. It was neatly wrapped in green paper and was fastened with a big silver bow.
“You wrapped it?”
“Yep. It took me ages but I did it.”
“What is it?”
“If you open it you might find out. Go on silly. It won’t bite. I went to London by myself today especially to get you this.”
Severus tore off the paper to find a large box. He pulled the tape from the top to find a large plastic object inside. Nina waved her hand over the box and the sides fell away to reveal a television set and DVD player along with a large selection of DVD’s.
“Thank you.” He breathed. “What is it?”
Nina couldn’t help laughing. “It’s a telly and that’s a DVD player. These” She told him, picking up a small case and opening it reveal a small flat disc inside. “..are DVD’s. You put it inside the machine and watch the film on the telly, like at the cinema but with smaller pictures.”
Severus looked at her like he thought she were mad. “How on earth can actors get inside of there?” He asked her, pointing at the TV.
“They don’t you ninny. The films are on these.” Nina held up one of the small, round shiny discs.”
Arthur Weasley was excited when he joined the cluster of guests at the table. “I’ve seen those before. They work of ekeltricity. I’m afraid you won’t be able to use it here.”
With a smile Nina waved her hand over the DVD player, opened the little drawer and popped the disc on top. The drawer closed and the TV screen burst into life, showing a menu.
Nina picked up a small box covered with buttons and pressed one. Music came from the two speakers at the sides and the screen became animated with moving pictures. It wasn’t long before the whole room full of guests sat round the table watching ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Everyone was silent as they sat engrossed with the story, Severus included. The film was followed by ‘Stuck on You’ and Ice Age’.
Nina bought around twenty different films and had she not stopped the player they would all have sat and watched the lot. There were a lot of complaints, not least from Severus. After all it was his present and it was up to him when it was switched off. But it was four thirty in the morning and Nina wanted to go to bed.
Luckily Albus stuck up for her. “The young lady is right. It is late and we should all be in our beds. Perhaps Severus would be kind enough to allow us another viewing at a later date.”
The Potions Master nodded graciously though he had no intention of sharing his present with any of them in the near future, if ever.
As soon as all the formalities of goodnights and thank you’s were over, Severus levitated his prize possession to his study. He wanted to watch ‘Zulu’ but Nina was sulking that he wouldn’t come to bed.
“Just this one and I shall be through. Show me what to do and then you can go to bed.” He pleaded. When Nina woke at eight thirty the following morning Severus was slumped on the sofa, fast asleep with his neck at an awkward angle. The TV was still on and showing the menu for ‘Little Nicky’. She switched it off and gave him a shake.
Severus’ eyes were bloodshot and he had a mark on his cheek where it had rested on his hand. “Oh bloody hell my neck. What time is it?”
“It’s quarter to nine and if you’ve got a stiff neck it’s your own fault.” Nina told him haughtily. “I’m going for breakfast.”
When the door slammed behind her he jumped and held his head, groaning. Too many brandies last night and staying up to watch TV all night had not been a good idea. Staggering to the medicine cabinet he discovered the headache and hangover potions were missing. Yet he knew he had a good supply of both. When his potions cupboard was found lacking also he knew Nina was responsible. Downing the contents of two bottles of healing potion he showered and dressed.
As soon as he entered his study the smell of a full English breakfast assaulted his nostrils and he rushed back to the bathroom to lose the contents of his stomach.
When Nina saw how pale he was she relented and gave him the hangover cure and headache potions she had hidden that morning to teach him a lesson. “You feeling better now?” She asked him once he emptied both bottles.
“Burp. Much.” He answered, sitting down to eat. “And I apologise for last night.”
“It’s okay. At least I know you like your present.”
“Like it Nina. I think it is superb. Thank you again.”
“Just don’t stay up all night watching it. I didn’t get to give you your other present.”
“Oh? What is it?”
“It was me you twit. But it’s too late now. I have to go and clean up the staff room. I promised I’d leave it clean after the party.” A quick kiss and she was gone.
As soon as he was alone he switched on the TV and watched the muggle news while he ate his breakfast. When Nina returned his eyes were glued to the screen again, his small pet snake wrapped around his wrist. He was watching ‘The Telly Tubbies’. She sighed. “Severus, I’m starting to wish that I’d bought you something else.”
“Yes quite.” He answered distractedly. That was it. She’d had enough. The TV disappeared. “What did you do that for? Noo Noo hasn’t cleaned up the tubby custard yet.”
“Severus. That programme is for pre schoolers. Not grown men.”
“But they have tellies in their bellies.” It’s truly amazing and you have made me miss it.” That was it. Nina erupted into fits of giggles when he sulked at missing the end of Telly Tubbies. He didn’t find it funny. He was stricken.
“Put your snake away and lets go for a walk or something.” She suggested. Severus put the small snake back in it’s tank, replacing the lid and giving his wand a quick swish. He turned back to Nina with a satisfied expression on his face.
“What did you do?”
“I have finally decided on a name for my snake.” He move aside so she could see the small plaque on the front of the tank.
“Noo Noo. You’ve called it Noo Noo.”
“And why not. I like the name. Now if you give me back my telly I promise I devote my attention to you and you alone for the rest of the day.”
Nina was reluctant but the TV reappeared. She noticed his wistful look at it but he kept his word and they spent the day walking round the grounds of Hogwarts, having lunch at the Three Broomsticks and generally doing nothing. But Nina thought it was a nice ‘nothing day’ and had nothing to complain about.
They were sitting at the edge of the forest, Nina leant against a tree as Severus sprawled on his back with his head on her lap. “It would seem that once again I must apologise to you Nina. I neglected you. Will you forgive me?”
“You know I will. But you have to promise not to do it again.”
“Shall we go inside and I shall show you how sorry I am.”
Instead of replying they were instantly on his bed, only this time it was Severus’ headboard supporting her back. She didn’t stay propped up there long.
The following Saturday morning Severus woke Nina with breakfast in bed again. “Severus. What are you up to?”
“I am up to nothing. What makes you ask such a thing?”
“Because the last time you brought me breakfast in bed you threw me over the side of a boat into a freezing cold lake. That’s why.”
“Did I really?” He asked casually as he tried to evade her original question. “You know you did. So what is it today. You may as well tell me.”
“Well to begin with it is not today but tonight. And you shall be entering a vampire nest.” He needlessly messed around straightening the bedcovers rather then look her in the eye as he spoke.
“I should have known. Will that be it when I’ve seen them. Apart from the Dementors that is.”
“I sincerely hope so. Nina, I too find the thought of you meeting with these creatures just as stressful. Even though I am assured of your safety each time, I fear for you. I love you Nina and the thought that I could lose you terrifies me. I would stand in your place were it possible.”
“Thank you Severus. I know you would.” She told him softly.
Dinner seemed to pass quickly that evening. Not because anyone was rushing. On the contrary, Severus and Nina were trying to draw the meal out, wanting time to slow. They would be leaving for London at eleven thirty that night, Highgate cemetery to be exact. Deep below the graveyard, way deeper then any of the inhabitants who were buried there, was a series of tunnels leading into the bowels of the earth. This was where the vampire nest was located.
Surprisingly it was Professor Sinistra who arranged this particular meeting. Though not a vampire herself, she was in some way connected to them by blood. Nina didn’t ask for the why’s and wherefores. It was bad enough that she had to go at all. They were to meet with the Professor in the main entrance and she would lead Nina part of the way down. But only partway. The rest she must travel alone. The two Professors would then wait for her up top. Professor Sinistra secured the assurance of the nest that she and Severus would not be approached as they waited for her.
When the time came to leave Nina was once more dressed in leather, not the outfit Severus had bought her. This one was provided by Kali, who told her that for some reason vampires had more respect for anyone wearing leather. The smell too of dead creature is putting them off biting.
So there Nina was, black jeans, boots, jerkin and cloak, all in black leather. “Well it’s not as bad as that rubber suit I had to wear in the lake Kali.”
“No Miss. I is thinking the Snape is liking it too when he sees you.”
“Probably Kali. Is he wearing leather too?”
“No. The Snape is refusing. You is going to have to change his clothes when yous is there, likes you did on his birthing day. Is better that way.”
“Okay Kali. Thanks.” Then Nina had another thought. “Kali?”
“I knows what you be asking of me Miss Nina. Is not long now. Once Dementors are dealt with you and the Snape can bang-bang. But yous got to be remembering to come to Kali first time. Is very important that first time is in room.” Kali told her pointing at the mysterious door that wouldn’t open yet.
Nina and Severus had tried many times to get the door to open but never with any success. “Oh Kali I wish I didn’t have to meet those Dementors.”
“Oh you has to be doing more then just meeting them. It’s won’t be like other meetings.”
“What do you mean? What else will I have to do?”
“Kali not allowed to be saying. But is not now. Is later and you is needing to go now.”
The connecting door opened and Nina stepped into Severus’ study.
He was dressed in his usual teaching robes, fastened high at the neck and was in the process of throwing a heavy wool cloak over his shoulders.
He paused to look her up and down, walked around her until he faced her and looked her up and down again. “I approve. You look ravishing. Though you may be mistaken for one of their kind.”
She laughed. “We’ll make a good team then. You always look like one.”
“I do not.”
“You do when you have your teaching robes on. Why do you think I was so scared of you first time we met?”
“It was dark then and you were confused, nothing more.” He told her indignantly.
“Yeah right. Come on then. Anyway, why aren’t you wearing leather? Kali said you refused.”
“I most certainly did. A man of my age and status does not parade around cemeteries in leather suits. It could be … misconstrued.”
Nina kept her mouth shut. There was no point starting an argument over it. They met up with Professor Sinistra, also dressed in leather, but hers was blood red and Nina thought she looked really cool. Severus explained to her how they would get there. He held Nina’s hand and as soon as Sinistra touched on Nina’s hand they were there.
“Oh this has got to be the creepiest thing I’ve ever had to do.” Nina whispered. She was shivering but through fear more then cold. The thought of being in a graveyard at this time of night freaked her out.
Severus seemed calm, but there again graveyards were nothing new to him. The Dark Lord often called his Death Eaters to meetings in places such as this. He believed it added atmosphere. But his face took on a deep scowl when he realised that every item of his clothing was now made of leather.
Professor Sinistra seemed to be not too bothered either. Though she was not completely comfortable. Nina and Severus watched as she used her wand to make a sequence of intricate taps on a tall grey headstone.
The inscription was worn away and it was impossible to read what was on it.
After waiting for what seemed an age but was in reality only a couple of minutes, the headstone slowly started to lean back until it was flattening the earth behind it. Then it slid sideways from it’s prone position and they could see a dark gaping hole in the ground.
“Shit Severus I don’t like this one bit.” Nina told him. She was shivering even more then before.
“Put a warming charm on yourself.” he told her. Your freezing.”
She did but it made no difference. “I’m shaking because I’m freaked out Severus, not because I’m cold.”
He hugged her. “Just stay close to Professor Sinistra.”
“Yeah. And what about when she leaves me on my own?”
He had no answer for that so he hugged her tighter before kissing her passionately on the lips. “My heart and soul goes with you as always Nina. Follow your instinct, as you have always done. You will be safe.”
Nina’s instinct told her to run and get the hell out of here but she followed the Professor instead while Severus waited up top. Professor Sinistra lit her wand to show a set of long winding steps. Nina decided it wasn’t bright enough and the whole flight of steps was illuminated. “Clever.“ The Professor told her impressed, though she kept her wand pointed in front of her still.
Nina still thought it was creepy though and it wasn’t long before the professor felt Nina’s hand slip into hers. She allowed it. “You have nothing to fear Nina. They have vowed to draw no blood against your will this night and a vampire is unable to break a vow.”
“If that’s the case, why can’t you and Severus come with me?”
“You are the one they are waiting to meet. We are not allowed to accompany you. I do not know why. Only that it would be considered bad karma if we were to do so. I am sorry Nina.”
They continued down the steps and then along a narrow tunnel. “What’s that smell Professor?”
“That is the smell of the Undead. It is a unique scent found only among their kind. Though not unpleasant.” Nina didn’t agree about the unpleasant bit but said nothing.
“I have to leave you here. Keep following the tunnel. Do not veer away down the side passages. This place is like a warren. It is easy to become lost. Remember that Nina. Do not stray whatever you do.”
Nina hadn’t realised she’d stopped shivering until she was alone and it started again. But she walked on, following the route the tunnel took her and not straying when it branched off in different directions. Soon it began to feel a little warmer and the tunnel widened. She could see light ahead.
After a brief pause to wipe the sweat from her hands onto her trousers she continued until she reached a smallish room. There were torches on the walls but that was all. Nina jumped and let out a scream when a hissing sound came from the shadows to her left.
“Wh … Who’s there?” She asked.
“Put out your light. Too bright.” Spoke the husky voice. She extinguished her own light spell.
“Thank you.” Said the voice. “It is best you do not light up like that down here. Your radiance is too much like sunlight. It is fatal to us.”
“Sorry. It’s just that it was dark back there. Scary.”
“You need have no fear of us little one. We mean you no harm. Follow me. The others are waiting.”
She watched as the shadow moved across the dirt floor to a door she hadn’t noticed until now. It slid aside and the shadowy figure moved through into a large chamber. Nina moved forward cautiously, ready to illuminate herself like a lighthouse if she had to.
As soon as she stepped into the chamber the door slid closed behind her.
Looking round the dimly lit room she noticed more shadowy figures lining the walls though it was impossible to see their faces. Then she got a hell of a fright when something touched her neck and snuffled at it.
“Ow gerroff me.” She yelled batting at it.
“Veltor. Stand back.” Boomed a voice from the front.
The snuffling thing moved away from her quickly. “I apologise for Veltor. He is merely a curious child.”
Nina’s eyes widened and she looked round to see a boy of about eleven or twelve cowering on the floor a few feet away from her. Automatically she moved to comfort him but when he lifted his face to hers she froze.
He looked nothing like a child. His face was contorted into a hideous mask as he bared his teeth at her.
“Veltor. Enough.” Said the voice again. The boys face changed to that of a normal child and he eyed her menacingly. Nina was wary of him now.
“Veltor is a natural vampire. It is difficult for him to control his curiosity. I am Matros. Ruler of this nest.”
“Hello Matros. I’m Nina. What do you mean a natural vampire?”
“Veltor is my son. He was born a vampire. He knows nothing else.”
“Are their others? Like Veltor I mean?”
“No. Only I can breed young. Only if something should happen to Veltor can I produce another of his kind. But enough of this. You are here so we can lay hands upon you and we are many. Please, sit.”
Matros indicated a chair standing in the middle of the room. Nina made her way over and made sure there were no ropes or chains waiting to wrap themselves around her wrists and ankles before cautiously sitting down.
“You are wise to be careful Nina. But we have vowed you shall come to no harm. We shall keep that vow.”
A tall woman stepped forward from the shadows at Matros’ signal. She was tall, graceful and very beautiful. Her hair shone like golden silk down her back and her eyes were of the deepest blue. Nina gasped at the sight of her.
The woman smiled warmly at Nina, a smile that reached her eyes.
“Hello Nina. I am Vanessa. Wife of Matros, mother to Veltor. I am pleased we are finally able to meet. Matros has spoke of your coming for many months.”
“Has he? I mean, he has? I mean … hello.”
Vanessa laughed. “You are still nervous child. Do not fear us. We wish you well.” With that Vanessa stroked Nina’s cheek gently with icy fingers and stepped back to her husband’s side.
For the next hour men, women and older teens stepped forward, bowed gracefully and would stroke her cheek as Vanessa had done or caressed the back of her hand or neck. Always sensual, always with a warmth in their eyes that belied the coldness of their touch. None took on the appearance that Veltor had earlier and Nina soon became comfortable with them. Even Veltor seemed a totally different child when he properly introduced, apologising for his earlier actions but still leaning forward and snuffling at her a little. This time when he stepped back he had a cheeky smile on his face as he looked at her and she could not help but grin back at him.
Matros snapped his fingers and the vampires quickly left the room. As soon as it was just him and Nina he beckoned her forward. “Nina. Even though I have vowed not to draw blood from you against your will, I now must ask that you grant me the pleasure of tasting your life blood.”
“Whaaaat?” Nina flung her arms around her own neck, almost choking herself as she tried to cover it completely.
“I have no desire to make you one of us child. But if you are to destroy the biggest evil this world has ever known, then we must taste of one another. Only a little blood shall pass my lips and it will not hurt. Then you shall drink of mine.”
“No. I don’t want to.” She screeched. “I wont do it.”
“I cannot, I will not force you. But if we do this, your powers will be considerably increased. Now you are protected against all magic, but you can still be hurt, physically. Allow us to share in in one another’s life force and you shall have physical protection as well as magical. You shall not become one of our kind.”
“I … I don’t know. I need to think about it.” She told him as she paced the room Severus style.
‘Severus. Severus can you hear me.’ She thought.
‘I can. You are afraid. What is it little bird?’
‘He wants to drink some of my blood and he says that I have to taste some of his too. And he wants me to do it willingly. So my powers will increase. Severus I can’t do this.’ After what seemed an age Severus finally answered. ‘Sinistra said that you cannot be forced but….’
‘But what Severus?’
‘But that you would be strongly advised to do as he asks. It is your choice Nina. I shall not try to persuade you one way or another. Follow your instinct little bird and remember that I love you.’
Great. She thought to herself. She paced and thought, thought and paced.
“Okay.” She finally whispered. “Ill do it.”
“You have made a wise choice little one.”
“Just make sure it doesn’t hurt too much, okay.”
“”It shall not. Look to me Nina.”
Nina lifted her face to his and as their eyes met she felt strangely attracted to him. Their eyes stayed locked as she moved toward his open arms. He folded them around her and she felt curiously safe. Matros held her close and as their bodies connected she started to feel aroused. He moved sensuously against her, eliciting very diminutive little gasps from her. This was his intention. Even as leader of his nest he needed to use every ounce of his powers to make her feel tranquil, yielding to his will. Matros brushed her hair to one side as he lowered his mouth to her neck. He breathed deeply.
“You smell wonderful child, you will taste even better. I know it.” he told her as his tongue slipped out from between his teeth and licked the salt from her skin.
Nina’s breath hitched at the sensation and she felt guilty at the pleasure she felt at this man’s touch. She knew she shouldn’t be feeling like this. Not when she was in love with Severus. But Nina was unable to help herself. It was as if Matros had some hold over her mind and she submitted to him.
Matros groaned at the taste of her skin. It was like heaven to him. His mouth moved around her neck until he felt he felt her pulse, the blood pumping through her jugular acting like an aphrodisiac to him. His lust for her blood almost overtaking his senses. His lips parted as his upper and lower canines elongated and sank into Nina’s neck. Matros’ eyes rolled into the back of his head as soon as her blood touched his tongue. Never had he tasted blood so sweet. He suckled gently, struggling to keep himself in control. His senses on overload. Matros wanted to lay her down, make love to her as he drained her. But he knew this could not happen. With a will that even he did not know he possessed he withdrew his teeth from her neck. The small puncture wounds healed immediately as he licked his lips clean of her blood.
Nina swayed and Matros kept his hold on her and moved her back to sit in the chair so she wouldn’t fall. “You did well my child. But are delicious. It was difficult for me to stop. Now you must taste of me while your blood still runs warm in my veins.”
Nina was still partly under his spell and looked at him expectantly. Matros rolled up a sleeve, baring his forearm and sliced along his wrist with a long fingernail. As blood pooled through the gash and began to drip onto the floor he pressed the wound against her lips.
“Drink sweet child.” He told her. “Drink willingly and glory in the gift I give you, as I gloried in the gift you granted me.”
Nina sucked and swallowed at the warm salty liquid that flooded her mouth. Her throat had been dry and blood was the only thing that could quench that thirst. As Matros tried to remove his arm Nina grabbed it with both hands, holding it to her mouth as she drank, unwilling as of yet, to relinquish what he offered. Matros inserted a finger between her lips to break the suction and pulled his arm from her mouth. He had been taken by surprise at her strength.
“You would drink me dry little one.” He chuckled though he was slightly shaken. “You must leave now. Your taste beckons me and I find you most difficult to resist.”
Nina felt like she were coming out of a dream. “Go? Now?” She asked him, her mind still fuzzy. Matros needed her to leave quickly before the urge to break his vow overtook him.
