CH 51 Hogwarts
Hermione lay in bed fuming as she listened to the soft sobs that Lou still emitted, even in her sleep.
Harry was sat up in bed trying to get Ron to explain exactly what happened tonight.
Ron was in shock. He’d been so infuriated that he wasn’t Lou’s first, he’d lost it and refused to listen when she tried to tell him the truth. She’d never told him she was a virgin, only that she wasn’t ready to go that far with him. Ron assumed the rest.
“So who raped her Ron? I assume this is Lou we’re talking about.”
“What? Yeah, it is. I dunno who did it, I only know what Hermione told me just now. I’ll tell you this much though Harry, if I find out who did, I’ll…”
“You’ll what Ron? I think it’s a bit late for playing the hero now. Sounds to me like you’ve fucked up big time.” Harry told him, rolling over and going to sleep.
The next day Lou stayed under the bedcovers until Ginny was dressed and gone downstairs. Only then did she sit up.
Hermione sat next to her and looked at her. “Lou, what do you want to do now? You can’t hide in here for the rest of the holiday, why should you? Ron’s a prat and he knows it. Come down and have some breakfast, then we’ll go for a walk or something, just you and me.”
“I want to go back to Hogwarts Hermione, I don’t want to be here any more. This is Ron’s home not mine, it’s better if I go, today, now.”
“If that’s what you really want Lou, I’ll come back with you.”
“No, you stay. It’s not your problem, it’s mine. I have to deal with this on my own.”
“Says who? Lou you don’t have to deal with anything on your own any more, not when you have friends.”
“Please Hermione, you’ve known Ron a lot longer than you’ve known me, if you go back to Hogwarts with me today, I’ll feel even worse than I do now. You have to stay, maybe you can tell him the truth, about what happened.”
Hermione was relieved when she said that. She’d already broken her promise when she told Ron in anger what happened to Lou.
“Lou, you don’t want him back do you?”
“No, I couldn’t Hermione. Not after what he said, it hurt too much, I just don’t want him to go on thinking that I’m…what he said I am, because I’m not am I?”
“No your not, and don’t ever let anyone tell you different. I’ll go see Mrs Weasley, tell her your not well and need some treatment for your leg or something. When you do come down, limp, act like it hurts okay. I’ll come and get you as soon as everything is arranged.”
Rather than risk meeting anyone on the landing on her way to the bathroom, Lou used a cleaning spell on herself and got dressed. She hurriedly packed her belongings and removed the necklace Ron gave her. She left it on her pillow.
Hermione returned to tell her that Arthur would apparate her back to Hogwarts if her leg was really hurting that much, and that she was welcome to return as soon as she’d had it seen to.
“Where’s Ron? I don’t want to see him.”
“He’s hiding in his room same as you. Don’t worry and just remember to limp like you used to.”
Lou kicked her toe hard against the bed leg and yelped, but she needed something to help her limp, she couldn’t pretend that easily.
Molly was distressed that Lou was leaving so soon and gave her a big hug, making her promise to come back as soon as she felt better.
Charlie watched with narrowed eyes, thinking it was odd the Ron wasn’t down here to see his girlfriend off.
Lou just nodded to everyone as she tried to hide her emotions.
Arthur apparated them to the gates of Hogwarts and dropped the wards. As the gates opened, they saw Professor Snape walking toward them. Molly had sent a message by floo and he was concerned about her newly healed leg.
As soon as Lou saw Severus striding toward them she wanted to run to him, he’d make everything alright again, she knew it, just like he always did.
Severus noticed immediately that she was not limping in the way she did before, and as soon as Arthur left for the Burrow, he asked her what was going on.
“Nothings going on, my leg ached and I thought it would be best if I came back, just in case.”
“Liar.” He hissed, as they walked back to the castle. “There is absolutely nothing wrong with your leg. I want the truth Lou and you will give it to me.”
“No, I can’t tell you, you’ll hate me if I do. I don’t want to talk about it, I just want to come home.” She told him in a shaky voice that surprised him.
‘Something has clearly happened.’ He thought. ‘It must be something to do with the weasel.’ “Is this because of a silly spat with your boyfriend?”
“No, not really, I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Did he do something to you Lou? He didn’t …”
“No, he didn’t do anything I didn’t want him to do, it’s complicated.”
He stopped and turned her to face him. “We are not going inside until you tell me what happened. So tell.”
“Your gonna get mad at me, I know you are.”
“Not as mad as I will be if you do not tell me what happened.”
“I got drunk, me and Ron went to his room and I …well he asked me to …with my mouth. So I did.” She told him, shame burning all over her face. “Then he, you know, touched me, down there. Then he went mad because I’m not a virgin. He said I lied to him and made him wait. He said I’m a slut and I’m not a slut, Hermione said I’m not. I hate him. Now you know so do what you like, you cant make me feel any worse than I already do.”
“Why on earth should you feel bad? Lou, you should not have let him coerce you into doing what you did, nor should you have been drinking, but you did not deserve what he said to you. Do not think I am going to punish you for this because I am not.”
‘How can I?’ Severus thought. ‘What I shall be forced to do to her will be much worse.’
“Thank you, I don’t think I could bear it if you hated me too.”
“I have no reason to hate you Lou, I doubt I ever will.” He said, leading her into the main entrance. ‘Though you may soon have cause to hate me.’
Lou put her things in her bedroom and slumped on the sofa. She was surprised when Severus appeared and sat in one of the chairs.
“I received your gifts, it was very generous of you, thank you. Though I have to tell you, the book you gave me, it is an extremely valuable first edition Potion Masters handbook. In fact all of the items are extremely valuable, it is not right that I accept them.”
Lou looked at him in disbelief. “Your as bad as Ron, if you don’t want them, fine. Throw the blasted things in the bin, I don’t care.” She said, rising and heading for the kitchen.
“Why?” She asked herself quietly. “Why, why, why?”
“Why can I not accept them? Or why something entirely different?” Severus asked from behind her.
“Why, whenever I want to do something for someone, is it thrown back in my face? I don’t understand. You gave me things, you did things for me no one else could possibly do, yet when I try and do something nice in return, it’s wrong. Why? Ron wanted that broom more than anything in the world, but he said he couldn’t accept it, I had to practically beg him to take it. Why? When I finally let him touch me somewhere I never let anyone touch, he hated me. Why? No matter what I do, nothing ever changes, it all stays the same.”
Severus looked at her. She stood, shoulders slumped, arms by her sides, head lowered in complete defeat.
He took hold of her and pulled her into his arms.
‘Gods I could kill that weasel. He had no right to touch what is mine in the first place.’
He’d half hoped things might go further between Lou and Weasley. As much as he hated the idea, he thought it better she learn with someone her own age, someone who wasn’t quite so generously endowed as himself. When he took her, and it was a given that he must, Severus was hoping she would at least be broken in, made more accommodating. Then it would not be such a shock when she realised what he would be putting inside her. The rape didn’t count, how could it? That was nothing but pain and torment. Just because they broke her barrier did not mean she was no longer a virgin, at least not to him. It seemed though that the weasel had messed up big time and Severus would be the one to pick up the pieces, before breaking her down again. ‘Shit what a mess this is.’ He thought.
“It is the way of life Lou. As for your gifts to me, I accept graciously. I also have something for you.”
“Yo…you do? Even after what I told you I did?”
“Lou, you told me yourself, you are fifteen in years, but you grew up a long time ago. I do not condone what you did, nor do I condemn you.”
Severus held out his hand and a small, nicely wrapped package landed in it.
“Here, merry Christmas Lou, from me.”
She took the present from him with a trembling hand and opened it. She now held a small leather box which she also opened. Inside was a tiny silver key.
“It’s a key.”
“Very observant.” He replied.
“Oh yeah, sorry. Thank you.” She told him.
He chuckled. “You are meant to ask what it fits.”
“Right, I’m not thinking well right now. So what does it fit?”
“Go into your bedroom and you’ll see.”
Confused, she headed to the bedroom and looked round. It took her a moment to realise there was a small silver chest standing on her dresser.
“Oh, its lovely.” She exclaimed, stepping up to it and putting the key in the lock.
It made a soft click when she turned it and the lid slowly lifted by itself. Inside a small figurine danced across a platform as a familiar song played out to music. “It plays Both Sides. How did you know? Where did you get this? It’s perfect, the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen. Oh thank you Severus.” She said, staring at the musical box and not even realising she’d called him by his first name.
She turned her face to him, she wanted to hug him but daren’t. If she did that he might get angry with her, he usually did.
One of the benefits of having her bound to him was that he could now slip easily into her mind without her knowledge. He decided to take advantage of that.
Severus looked gently into her mind, so gently she didn’t even feel him there. He withdrew and looked back at her.
“Then perhaps a small hug of appreciation is in order, only a small one mind.” He said, opening his arms.
She almost knocked him down when she flung herself at him and held tightly.
“It is the same song you sang to at the Halloween ball, when you did you seemed to lose yourself in it. I assumed it was a favourite of yours.”
“It is.“ She said softly. Lou pressed her cheek against his chest as he held her, she felt safe now, like the world disappeared and there was only the two of them here, no one and nothing mattered any more because this was where she’d always belonged.
Severus knew he should release her now, she was making him feel things he should not be feeling. Somehow though it felt right, having her in his arms like this, like nothing else mattered, only Lou and himself. When he felt a stirring in his groin he knew it was time to stop.
He removed his arms, expecting her to let go, instead she clung tighter, singing softly to the music box.
“Lou.” he said softly. She didn’t stir. “Lou, we have to stop now.” He told her.
’Damn he was getting hard. What was she going to think if she felt that pressing into her stomach?’
Lou stopped singing and lifted her face to his. “Pardon?”
“I said we have to stop now.”
“Why? I don’t want to, it feels …safe, right. Just a bit longer, please.”
“Yes, well there is a reason for that, one I cannot explain to you at the moment. For now you will have to trust me, Lou please let go of me, I am finding it very difficult being this close to you.”
“Okay.” She said, standing back and lowering her eyes to his feet. “What can‘t you tell me yet? Why can‘t you tell me yet?”
“I will, this afternoon when the headmaster returns. Rest for now, you do not look as though you had much sleep last night, I shall call you when it is time for lunch.”
Too tired to argue, Lou undressed and climbed into bed. She was asleep in minutes, the music box playing on her dresser and images of a pair of dark eyes staring down into hers.
“What time is it?” Lou asked, when Professor Snape shook her awake.
He’d been knocking on her bedroom door for a while and grew concerned when she did not reply. Severus decided to go in and see if something was wrong. Fortunately she was only sleeping soundly.
“It is twelve thirty, get dressed and come to the Hall for lunch.” He said, turning and leaving the room.
Lou didn’t want to get out of bed, she was still tired. Flopping back on the pillows she gave a long stretch and remembered why she was back here. Rolling onto her side she saw the silver box on her dresser and thought about this morning, more to the point, what happened after the Professor gave her the music box.
Her stomach growled loudly and she scowled as she left her warm bed and padded to the bathroom.
After a quick shower, she dressed and made her way to the Great Hall, still yawning.
It was something of a surprise to her when she entered and saw several other students., Lou thought everyone left during the holidays. She assumed that if she’d not been invited to the Burrow, she would be here on her own.
Two she knew by sight and she smiled slightly in their direction.
They nodded at her as she sat at the large round table that replaced the four long house tables that usually sat in the hall.
“Miss Black, I trust you had an enjoyable Christmas.” Albus said.
“Yes, thank you Headmaster. Did you?” Lou asked.
“As always. It is nice to have you back with us however.”
The rest of the meal was general chit chat between the students and few remaining staff. The students talked mainly about the presents they’d received and what they wanted next year.
Lou spoke only to answer any question that was put her way, and Severus was his usual self, scowling at anyone who dared to look his way and saying nothing.
As soon as she’d eaten her fill, Lou stood to leave the table and go back to her rooms.
“Miss Black, please sit down, I would like a word after lunch and I am almost finished.” The Headmaster told her.
She nodded and sat down, waiting for him to finish and wondering what he had to tell her.
When he was done, she followed the headmaster and the Potions Master from the hall and to the headmasters office. Seated round the warm fireplace Lou felt on edge, when she lifted her eyes she saw both men studying her intently and she coloured up.
“Louhi, I am saddened to hear of what occurred at the Burrow, I hope you do not allow it to affect you in the future.”
Lou was mortified. He knew. Professor Snape must have told him and now he was talking to her about it.
Unable to speak she stared hard at the floor, her feet, anywhere but at the Headmaster.
“Do not be embarrassed Louhi, what we are about to reveal to you will make what happened yesterday pale in comparison.”
A small shrug was the only indication she gave to show she was listening and Albus carried on.
“Severus as you know, is our closest contact with Voldemort, as such he is privy to information we would not otherwise have. Because of this, he has, as you are aware, led Voldemort to believe you are interested in joining his ranks. Now unfortunately your collar has come to his notice and he demanded from Severus the purpose of it. There are only two purposes for a collar such as yours Lou and Voldemort knows of them both. Had Severus told him it’s true purpose, he would have demanded you were brought to him and you would not been allowed to survive. He covets power above all else, anyone suspected of having a higher level of power than himself cannot be allowed to live. Because of this Severus was forced to lie, saying instead that you are bound to another for marriage.”
“So that’s what Fleur was going on about. Bill’s wife, she wouldn’t leave me alone, kept saying that it was rare nowadays.”
“It is extremely rare, yes.” Albus said.
“That’s alright then isn’t it? Because he thinks I’m engaged or something, he’ll leave me alone now.”
“Ah, no, he won’t.”
Lou’s head lifted sharply to the Headmasters.
“Voldemort wanted a name, your intended was immediately earmarked for termination, he could not risk losing you to someone who might not be a faithful follower.”
“Oh. So who’s name did you give?” She asked Severus.
“Lou please understand that I had no choice in this. I could not condemn an innocent man to death, so I told him you are bound to me. I fully expected to have the killing curse thrown at me at that point, hence making you less obtainable to him.”
She put a hand to her mouth in horror, he’d lied to Voldemort and risked his own life, to save her. “But he didn’t, kill you I mean. Why not? Not that I wanted him to, but I don’t understand, if he believes you, and your still here, doesn’t that mean you’ve got away with it?”
“Unfortunately not.” Severus said. He stood to pace the room, as he always did when troubled. “The Dark Lord decided that your binding to me pleased him, that it is a good thing. He has demanded that we go ahead with the Binding so that I will have control of your fortunes, hence giving control to him.”
He stopped pacing but did not turn to face her, he couldn’t, not after what he’d done, what he had still to do..
“Well tell him he can have it, all of it. Then you don’t have to do what he says. He’ll think you tricked me and leave you alone won’t he?”
Albus took up the conversation. “I am afraid not Louhi. Should Voldemort get his hands on such a large amount of money, he would be unstoppable, we cannot allow that to happen. The only way to keep Severus alive now is for you both to wed.”
“If we do that, he’ll make Professor Snape give him the money anyway, so what’s the difference?”
“Lou, even as your husband, Severus would not have access to your vaults. Voldemort does not know this, it is something unique to your line. You must wed, and Severus must pretend that he knew nothing of this inability to take control of your fortunes. As such, you must demand that you are both to be left unharmed if he is to obtain anything from you.”
“But …then he’ll want the money anyway, besides Professor Snape would never marry me, this is madness, I’m not even old enough to get married. It doesn’t make any sense.”
“That is one of the reasons why bindings are so rare these days, and frowned upon. A girl may be bound at any age and be married at whatever age the wizard chooses. A binding is beyond Ministry law and Voldemort has demanded you be wed by the middle of next month. If you do not, Severus will be summoned and put to death.”
