LEECH
Chapter 52
Kathy watched amazed as the two boys threw a cloak over themselves and simply, vanished. With a shudder, she made her way down the dungeon steps. It was still dark, and her nerves were still wrought. Every tendon on her body was taught, tense, ready to spring to action should anything suddenly appear in front of her. But at least she was on familiar ground and she knew her way.
“Damn.” She muttered on discovering the door to Severus’ office was locked. Now she would have to knock and face him when he opened the door, and she didn’t particularly want to see Severus. Not after the last time they’d spoken.
With a sigh, she knocked.
“Who is it?” He barked menacingly as he flung the door open. “Kathy? I thought you were still in the hospital wing. Are you alright?”
“Not that it’s any of your concern, but yes, I’m fine.” She told him angrily as she pushed past him and made for her rooms.
He stared after her for a moment, not too sure what had just happened. He closed and locked the door, then turned to follow her, only to have the door slammed in his face. He scowled and flung it open. “What did you do that for? It’s hardly my fault you were in the infirmary to start with.”
“Go away Severus, I don’t want to talk to you.”
“And why not? I have done nothing that warrants this kind of treatment.”
Kathy couldn’t believe he was so ignorant. She narrowed her eyes, her hands curled into fists in an effort to restrain herself. “Get out Severus.” She said in a soft, but dangerous voice. “Get out and stay out. I’m having trouble keeping my hands to myself right now and if you don’t go, the gloves are off. Now leave.”
Severus’ eyes widened at the glint of sheer animosity in her eyes. She looked… dangerous. Unhinged. For the first time ever, Severus was scared of an unarmed woman and he backed up slowly through the door, closing it behind him. What the hell had that been about? He looked at the time, twenty past ten, and floo’d Albus.
“I have no idea what’s wrong with her. But the woman’s unbalanced. That episode must have done more damage then original thought. What is Poppy thinking letting her go in this state. She threatened me Albus, and believe me she meant it.”
“How strange. This is not like Kathy at all. I’ll talk to Poppy first and see what she has to say.
Albus spoke to Poppy through the floo for several minutes, but the nurse assured him she was fine when she left a little under an hour ago.
“An hour?” Severus rubbed his chin. “Albus it does not take an hour to get from the infirmary to here. Something must have happened en route, there is no other explanation.”
“I agree, let me try and talk to her.”
Albus knocked on the adjoining door but there was no answer, even after trying a second and third time. “Maybe we should leave it until morning, she will surely have calmed down by then.”
“Or maybe she has done something to harm herself. She was deranged, disturbed. I don’t like it Albus. Not one bit.”
After a brief pause during the older wizard seemed to decide what would be the best decision, he opened the door.
The living room was in darkness, as was the kitchen. “It would appear she has gone to bed.”
“I still think you should make sure she is alright.”
With a sigh, and not a little trepidation, Albus lit the torches and made his way across the room to the bedroom door and knocked softly.
When there was still no reply he quietly opened the door and peeped inside.
Albus almost had a heart attack at the pair of eyes that met his from the darkened room, eyes that looked as startled as his. Not to mention the rolling pin she was holding aloft.
“Mrs Ripley, you gave me quite a fright.” He told her while placing a hand on his chest.
“I gave you a fright? What do you think you gave me, creeping into my room in the middle of the night. I thought you were… him.” She retorted while pointing over his shoulder at Severus.
“Me? Why does expecting me warrant a rolling pin? Kathy what on earth is the matter with you?” Severus was completely confused now.
Albus lit the torches in the bedroom. “Perhaps we should talk, something is obviously very wrong and I would like to know what it is. Please.” Albus gestured for Kathy to leave the bedroom.
She hesitated for a moment, then raised her chin and sailed passed them to go sit on a chair.
She watched Albus, but glared at Severus as they took their seats.
“So, are you going to tell us why you’re in such a strop?” Severus asked as he matched her glare.
“How dare you ask me that. You know full well what’s wrong and I am not in a strop.”
“Well I do not know, so would someone please enlighten me.”
They both turned to the Headmaster.
“Ask her.” “Ask him.” They said simultaneously, earning more glares from each other.
“Albus I have no idea what this is about.”
“Yes you bloody well do. I can’t believe what you said to me when we got back from that house. It was… vicious, nasty, and totally uncalled for. It hurt Severus, and you’ll never get the chance to treat me like that again.”
Seeing the uncomprehending expression on the Potion Masters face, Albus sent him to retrieve the small pensive. “Kathy, do you still have some of Severus’ magic in you?”
“Erm, I think so. Why?”
“Because it seems there is a little confusion between what you are alleging, and what Severus does not appear to remember. I would like for you to place the memory of what has upset you so into the pensive so that I might view it.”
“What? No. What he said, it was horrible. I’d hate for you to see that. Anyway, I’ve never done it before.”
“No, but you are aware of the process if some of Severus’ essence still remains in you, and I need to find out what is upsetting you.”
“Severus, give Kathy your wand.”
“What? Why?” He asked placing the pensive on the table.
“So she can retrieve the memory of whatever is troubling her. Clearly you are not about to tell us, and Kathy cannot even bring herself to speak about it. Your wand please.”
Severus reluctantly handed over his wand. He still had no idea what the problem was, he couldn’t even remember Kathy returning. Hell, he hoped he hadn’t made some stupid drunken pass at her.
Kathy placed her memory of that night into the pensive and lay the wand on the table.
When Albus withdrew his finger from the bowl then turned to face Severus, his face was grave. “I am not surprised the young lady is so upset Severus. I feel ashamed to know you.”
Severus frowned and stuck his own finger into the bowl. When he pulled it away he was white.
