Chapter 51: It's Been a Long Time
{Last time…"Is Thomas's father a Death Eater?" Sirius had a wild look in his eyes familiar from his days after his twelve-year stint in Azkaban. "Is this why you've been hiding from him?"
Hermione hugged her knees to her chest and cried.}
"What did you say?" James almost screamed the words as soon as they came out Hermione's mouth.
James and Lily had apparated into the room only to hear the confession that Hermione gave. Hermione saw Lily's horrified face at the mention of Thomas's father being a Death Eater.
"So why are you here? Are you a spy?" The accusation came from James, who was already irritated with Hermione because of his earlier conversation he'd had with his wife. He pulled out his wand pointing it at Hermione.
"Of course she's not a spy!" Sirius jumped up to face James his wand now out pointing at him. "Do you think she would be going through all of this just to be a spy?" The two mates were nose-to-nose glaring at each other.
Hermione stood up and walked between the friends who were close to coming to blows. "Both of you stop!" Her hands shot out to both men; "Expelliarmus!" and both wands flew into Hermione's hands. At the same time they were thrown back, one against the wall, the other onto the sofa.
Sirius brought his hand up to wipe the blood off his head where he had hit the wall. "Bloody Hell Hermione! What was that?"
Hermione shifted back and forth, "Knockback Jinx, Miranda Goshawk's The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2."
"But you cast that jinx without using a wand." Lily stood dumbfounded staring at Hermione. "You know how to do wandless magic?"
"Who taught you how to do that? Your Death Eater boyfriend?" James crawled out from under the tipped over sofa.
"Shut your pie hole James," Sirius's anger hadn't been ebbed at all.
"Yes, James. My Death Eater boyfriend taught me that and a lot more. Would you like to see what else he taught me?"
"Who is it Hermione?" Sirius walked over to her.
"I can't tell you or anyone." She met Lily's eyes seeing the fear held within. "But he is powerful, very powerful. And to be truthfully honest he scares me and I'm not sure I ever want him to see Thomas." It felt so wrong to be admitting to anyone about her involvement with a Death Eater. There was no way that she was telling any of them that not only was Thomas's father a Death Eater, but also he was the one who started the Death Eaters.
"So what the is the real reason you want to go to the meeting tonight if not to spy on The Order?" James still sounded so cynical to Hermione. She could clearly see where Harry had gotten his angry side. Hermione had been at the end of Harry's outbursts plenty of times during their fifth year at Hogwarts.
Sirius lifted the sofa back up and led Hermione over to sit down. He reached for her hand and Hermione clutched it tightly. "I must talk to Albus Dumbledore."
James and Sirius looked at one another as Lily asked, "Why? Do you know Professor Dumbledore?"
Hermione hesitated, knowing that what she said next would determine whether or not she'd have access to Dumbledore.
"I know him. We've had dealings in the past and I need to…discuss something with him. Go floo call him and ask him if he knows me."
No one moved as Lily stared at Hermione, Sirius looked down at their entwined hands and James stared at the fireplace. A few minutes, that truly seemed like hours, went by until James stood and walked to the fireplace. Throwing some floo powder into the fireplace he called for Dumbledore, "Albus, its James Potter."
Soon the flames flickered and Albus Dumbledore appeared. Hermione's heart raced a million miles a minute. The last time she had seen the wizard had been on top of the astronomy tower. She started biting her lip wanting to throw curses at the old coot. This was the man who had ruined her life with Tom Riddle Jr. This is the man that in all sense and purposes escalated the war after he sent Hermione forward in time.
"Good afternoon Mr. Potter what can I do for you?" James looked over at Hermione then back to Dumbledore.
"We wanted to know if you knew Hermione. She's the one that Lily wants to bring to the meeting this evening." James stepped back quickly as Dumbledore came through. There he was standing in the Potter's front room, "Well hello Hermione…MacMillan. It's been a long time."
Walking away from Hogwarts The Dark Lord was in a very sour mood. Why had he agreed to Flamina's request? What if she didn't hold to her end of the bargain? Would it really be that terrible to spend one night with the tantalizing Goddess? He would never have to tell Hermione about what he did to find her. It would only be one night and then he would have Hermione and Thomas back. The more time went by, the greater the chance was that Dumbledore could get to them.
Wanting only to be left alone Tom apparated back to his hideout. The next 24 hours would drag by until he spent the night with Flamina. He only knew that he was to go to a small town in France. Once there, someone would find him and bring him to Flamina. He would have been happy going back to Hogwarts and doing the deed on the hard, stone altar.
Rushing down the hall towards his rooms Lucius Malfoy was waiting at the doors. "What do you want Lucius?" Hesitating, Lucius didn't speak, "Well what is it now?" The Dark Lord was at his wits end and wasn't in the mood for long conversations right now.
"My Lord, were you able to accomplish what you needed to at Hogwarts?" Tom almost didn't want to respond to his #1 Death Eater and wished that he hadn't told him where he had gone.
"Yes, Malfoy. In 24 hours I will be going to get my son and Hermione. Now leave me alone and I don't want to be bothered." He looked around his rooms, "Where is Nagini? Send her to me immediately."
"Yes, my Lord." Malfoy clicked his heals together, bowed and left the rooms.
He would need Nagini to help him in his quest to finally bring what belonged to him back here. He trusted Nagini more than any of his Death Eaters. His snake would do as he bid and not let him down. Too many things had not been going right. He had been putting his faith in the wrong people and now it was Nagini's turn. He would not fail this time; he could trust her. Once Hermione and Thomas were safely with him, all hell would break loose on every Witch and Wizard who fought against him. The Ministry would be his; Hogwarts would be under his control, and most importantly, Albus Dumbledore would be dead.
Hermione could not believe that Dumbledore was finally in front of her. She knew that he'd known that she'd been staying with the Potters. She also knew he was aware of her son being born. The only thing she had been wondering was why had he not made a move against her or Thomas? What was he waiting for? These were all of the answers she was looking for, but this conversation would not take place in front of Sirius, James and Lily. Dumbledore would not want it to get out what he had done to Hermione. She also knew that she wouldn't want to divulge about her relationship with the Dark Lord.
Dumbledore looked at Hermione with a glint of superiority in his eyes. Yes, he had won the battle on top of the astronomy tower sending her away from Tom, but by God he hadn't won the war.
"You are looking well Hermione after giving birth. Where is the boy? Does he look like you or his father? I would like to see how he's doing." Dumbledore's words sent chills up her spine. There was no bloody way that this wizard would be looking at her son or be within two feet of him. He was threatening Thomas in his own enigmatic way.
"He is safely upstairs taking his afternoon nap, away from the evils of the world." Hermione stared back at the Professor with a deadly glare. Her words may have sounded strange to the occupants of the room, but there was no misunderstanding the venom in which they had been said. Only Hermione and Dumbledore knew what was happening between them leaving the other three in the dark. Sirius looked at Hermione wanting to say something, but she just shook her head at him. Hermione walked up to the Headmaster, "We will talk later tonight…alone." She turned her back to the man and ran up the stairs.
All eyes were now on Dumbledore who stood smirking at the departing Hermione. The air felt heavy in the room at this strange interplay between the leader of The Order and the mysterious Hermione MacMillan. The older wizard glanced at each of them, then apparated away.
"By Gods would someone like to tell me what just happened between those two?" Sirius said maniacally almost screaming the words. "If we hadn't been here I think wands would have been drawn."
"I don't think we should take her tonight. Clearly they don't like each other." James sighed and plopped down on the sofa. "I think Hermione has more enemies than she is letting on."
"We can't stop her James. I think she needs to talk to Albus and we can't interfere." Lily stood at the kitchen door, "It looks to me like Hermione is more afraid of Dumbledore hurting Thomas than his own father. I don't blame her for being protective of her son. If it were me I would be doing the same thing." Lily shook her head and took a deep breath retreating into the kitchen to make tea.
"There is more going on here than we even realized." Sirius stood patting his head wincing. "I'm going up to take care of my head and then check in on Hermione." Sirius stood close to his friend, "I'd suggest you stay away from her tonight James. Frankly after what just happened, I'm not sure whose side I'm on right now, light or dark. But I do know one thing; I'll not let anything happen to that woman upstairs or to her son. She will not be a pawn in this rotten war where she ends up dead."
James sat watching Sirius leave. What had his friend gotten involved in? He was clearly in love with Hermione, but would loving her cause his own death? James stretched out on the sofa and closed his eyes to nap before the meeting, and the excitement that lay ahead.
That's it for now. Up next is the meeting between Dumbledore and Hermione. And of course don't forget The Dark Lord's little tryst with Flamina. Thanks for all of the awesome reviews from the past chapters.
