Chapter Fifty-One: Procella Fractisque (The Storm Breaks)
“Dumbledore!”
The door to the meeting room was slammed open, all eyes jumped from the confusing jumble of maps and plans lying spread across the table. It was one of the Prewett twins and his eyes had a wild, half excited half terrified look that made everyone stand up. Dumbledore’s eyes narrowed. “Fabien?”
The man took a gulp of air and leaned heavily against the door frame. “They…They’ve attacked the Ministry delegation…the ones who were escorting prisoners to Azkaban.”
Moody swore loudly, James felt a shiver up his spine as Dumbledore turned to him and his friends. “James, Sirius, Remus…you three go and help them in any way you can. Moody, contact the Auror’s office and get as many off duty help as you can.”
“Dumbledore…let me go too!” Lily said firmly.
“If you wish.”
“And me…” Peter said then paled as if he had just realised what he had said.
“Does anyone else wish to go?”
“I do!” Another man raised his hand, he smiled. “I’ve been stuck doing recon for too long, some action would be good.”
“Of course, Benjy, your skills will be most appreciated. Now, go.”
The group left the room and once outside they Apparated to where they knew the Ministry Delegation were going to be. Sirius opened his eyes to reveal the rolling highlands of Scotland, a huge bay opened up before them and the evening sunlight glittered prettily upon the water. If he squinted he could make out a dark shadow on the horizon, a shadow that sent shivers coursing through his body. “Azkaban.” Lily breathed softly from his side and the others paused to gaze at the formless lump of darkness on the very edge of their vision. “It’s true then…? This is the place they take all Wizarding criminals?”
“They cross over on a boat with them.” James said absently, he rolled his wand in his fingers yet his eyes never left the horizon. It seemed to draw them all, like a giant pit of despair that Sirius imagined he could hear the screams of the prisoners even from where they stood. “The Dementors meet them on the island, there’s a massive fortress there that holds them and no escape.”
“How…horrible…” Lily whispered and wrapped her arms around her torso. The wind was chill but Sirius found that his shivers were not because of the cold.
“I’d hate to end up in there. They say that it drives a man mad within a week of imprisonment.” Benjy Fenwick said with a shudder.
“It would depend upon how mentally resilient you are and of course how bad your past was.” Sirius muttered softly.
“Most die in there, don’t they?” Lily asked, almost as if she were afraid of the answer.
“Yeah…” James replied.
They all stood in silence for a moment until they heard several pop’s nearby and turned to see three robe clad men stood a few feet from them, Benjy tore his eyes away from the haunting rock out at sea. “Hi, Dumbledore sent us.” He said extending his hand in a friendly fashion.
The Auror eyed him suspiciously, and didn’t seem inclined to shake hands or be friendly. “We didn’t ask for reinforcements.” He said icily.
“Oh well, in that case we’ll be off and let you get attacked shall we?” Sirius said sarcastically. “We have word that a group of Death Eaters is after your prisoners there so, unless you want them to escape, I suggest that you tolerate our presence.” He shot the Auror’s a nasty look. They stood in a semi-circle around two rather battered looking men who were white as sheets and tightly bound in heavy chains.
“Alright.” The leader said begrudgingly. “But you’ll stay on the mainland, you don’t want to go anywhere near that place.” He waved a hand vaguely towards Azkaban.
“I’m down with that.” Sirius said with half a shudder. “I wouldn’t go there if you paid me, mate.”
“Very well, the boat’s hidden down there in that rocky outcrop. We should get down there before the tide comes in.”
They all began making their way slowly towards the cliff edge, all of them were on edge with wands gripped tightly in their fists. James’ eyes darted around, he expected to be attacked at any moment and he could almost feel eyes on the back of his neck as if he was being watched. The wind hissed through gorse bushes and tangles of grasses, it caught in their hair and tugged at it playfully as they reached the drop of the cliff. Sirius gazed over the edge, his eyes drawn to the soft sand at the bottom of the high stone, he could see a tiny boat hidden behind an outcropping of grey stone. The waves washed up onto the small deserted beach with a calming sound that was comforting. His boots were right on the very edge when it happened, it was so sudden none of them were expecting it. A loud cry sent gulls soaring into the air screaming like the damned, Sirius gasped in surprise as a green jet of light seared the air right by his face. It didn’t take much and his boot slipped on the cliff. His breath left him in a sudden yelp of shock as his fingers automatically released his wand, he felt the earth beneath him give way as he wheeled his arms in a poor attempt at righting himself. “Sirius!” James cried and made to grab his boyfriend’s wrist but he was already falling.
Sirius’ eyes went wide with shock, he was unable to articulate any words as a profound sense of weightlessness engulfed him. He fell and was helpless to stop his descent. He could see James’ face far above him, twisted in agony as the rocks drew closer. He could feel them looming behind him like some terrible bed of razor blades intent upon cutting his flesh to shreds and shattering his bones. “Jamie…” The rushing wind ripped the words from his lips and devoured them hungrily.
“NO!” James screamed, he lifted his wand and pointed it at his lover. “Aresto Momentum!” He cried and watched in relief as Sirius’ descent slowed right down until he was drifting like a feather.
Sirius had closed his eyes tightly, awaiting the agony that he knew would come from such an impact but with a sudden jerk that originated in his stomach he felt himself slow down. Slowly he opened his eyes and saw James standing high above him and lowering him gently to the sand, he grinned weakly. He could feel his heart hammering in his chest, like a fist sized rodent intent upon escaping a cage. When he came to rest upon good solid earth he almost collapsed as his knees turned to water, he stumbled into a rock and held himself upright breathing in rapid bursts as he tried to calm his racing pulse. “That was too fucking close.” He whispered to the sea. A gull was perched upon his rock and was watching him with beady black eyes as he straightened and finally looked up the way he had come. He could see nothing but the odd flash of light as a curse was fired. “Fuck!” He hissed and began searching the bottom of the cliff for some way back up so he join the fight.
As soon as James had ensured Sirius’ safety he turned and ran towards the fight, it had escalated quickly as soon as the Death Eaters had realised the Auror’s weren’t alone. The world was suddenly full of shouts, coloured lights and explosions. James ran to join the fight and had to hope Sirius could find his own way back up the cliff.
Sirius felt the strain in his arms as he heaved himself up the jagged rock face, finding hand and foot holds was easy enough the problem was the fact that the rock was slick and wet beneath his fingers. Occasionally he would slip and have to catch himself before he fell again, it was slow hard work but he was determined to get back to James’ side. He had to ensure his friends safety, he had to make sure that if he was going to die it would be by James’ side. “Come on, Padfoot, just a few more feet…” He muttered, voice strained as he paused to listen to the battle above him. There was a piercing scream and a body went flying over the cliff above his head, he turned and watched it fall he saw the black robes and the flash of sunlight upon a silver mask. Satisfied that it wasn’t a friend he continued his climb.
Peter had been backed towards the cliff edge, he was hastily throwing up shields but they were being shattered by each spell that hit them. He was panting heavily as his opponent grinned from behind his horrid mask, he watched in horrified fascination as the man lifted his wand. “NO!” Peter screamed and flung his arms before his face in a futile attempt at self preservation. Then he heard a loud cry and something hot whizzed over his head, singing his hair. He lowered his arms to see James rolling around on the floor with the Death Eater, he gaped helplessly as James got the upper hand and punched the man in the face. There was a crack as his mask broke and a harsh scream from the Death Eater, Peter saw blood ooze from beneath the pieces of the mask and realised James’ fist must have pushed fragments into the man’s face. “No one touches my friends, you bastard!” James cried and lifted his wand. His curse hit the Death Eater in the chest and he went still, James leapt off of him and ran to Peter’s side. “You hurt?” He asked rapidly and Peter shook his head. “Nice one…” James flashed him a grin and Peter saw blood on his knuckles when he lifted his arm to wipe away sweat from his brow. He clapped Peter on the shoulder and spun on his heels before running back into the fight, once James was involved in duelling a particularly stubborn enemy Peter let himself sag slightly as adrenaline left him. He let out a breath but then something grabbed his ankle, he screamed and spun on the spot exhibiting all the grace of a drunken Hippogriff and fell flat on his arse. He sat there gasping as the hand began feeling back and forth across the rough grasses that covered the edge of the cliff.
“Oi! Peter! I know you’re there! Give me a hand before I end up food for seagulls!”
Peter started and crawled towards the edge where he gazed down into Sirius’ strained face, he watched him smile weakly and take one hand off of the rock he was clinging to. Peter found himself entranced by his hand, his palm was covered in scratches and blood from the sharp rocks and dirt had been smeared across his white skin. He stared and wondered, for the first time in his life, what would happen if he didn’t take it. Would Sirius scream as he fell? Would he let out one last curse from those pretty lips before he was smashed to pieces on the sharp rocks below? What would he look like then? A jellied mass of broken bone and mashed flesh? Crimson blood spattering the grey rocks only to be washed away by the ever predictable tides? Peter shivered. “Peter…?” Sirius’ voice had gone soft, suddenly he heard a note in it, something he had never thought he would hear from his friend…it sounded like fear. He looked into wide silver-grey eyes and saw that Sirius was uncertain if he would take his hand and pull him to safety, he was actually afraid of being shattered on the rocks. Peter knew Sirius well enough to understand that this was not a fear of death, it was a deep seated terror of betrayal and dying in what could be agony. It was the terror of dying a bloody, mutilated mass of little more than flesh. Sirius’ arrogance was unbelievable, yet he found himself lifting his hand and taking Sirius’ wrist. He paused one last time as he considered, in that same cold thought process, just throwing him away from the cliff and letting him die. Then his body was straining, pulling Sirius up onto firm ground and safety. The moment passed and Sirius’ relief was hidden behind an impenetrable mask.
As soon as Sirius was firmly on the ground he was on his feet and searching for his wand, he found it lying in the grass where he had dropped it and grinned happily. With a salute to Peter he ran towards the fight, it seemed to be slowing down now and James, Lily, the Auror’s, Remus and Benjy seemed to have the last two Death Eater’s cornered. To Peter’s right stood the prisoners surrounded by enchanted ropes which they could not escape from. He sighed and began walking towards the fight, his feet dragging reluctantly behind him.
Sirius laughed as he skidded to a halt by James’ side with a grin, he lifted his wand and flicked it. He fought quickly, almost dancing as he used complicated combinations of spells and foot work to subdue his enemy. James was on his left and frowning in concentration, Sirius noted briefly that he had a cut across one cheek and blood on his hands but seemed otherwise unharmed. Remus was limping and Lily’s hair was half burnt away by some spell, the Auror’s looked worn but they were still fighting determinedly and Benjy was panting heavily through gritted teeth, his side was bleeding profusely through his robes as he gripped the wound with his wandless hand.
It all happened in slow motion, Sirius felled his opponent with a yell of triumph but at the same moment his companion fired a very violent, very explosive spell…the world turned to fire and white light. Sirius felt himself picked up and thrown brutally into the air, he lifted both arms over his head as he flew and gripped his wand. He hit the ground with hard enough to feel several ribs shatter, he tried to scream but was winded from the impact. He lay still desperately trying to breathe as he stared up at the grey sky that seemed to be slowly draining of any colour it once had.
James rolled quickly, dodging the worst of the flames that had been aimed at him. He felt them hit his left arm and screamed as they seared his flesh. Something hit him as he lay face down in the earth, his heart pounded in his ears and behind his eyes as if it was going to burst. He took great whooping breaths as he tried to get his body working again.
Lily was blown backwards into peter and they fell to the floor in a tangle of limbs, Peter squealed as he felt her weight crush his chest and they struggled for a few moments before righting themselves. She gazed blankly around the devastation and her heart dropped out of her chest. Where the spell had hit was a great black circle of singed grass, in the midst of which was a great smear of blood, she watched it for a moment and realised with sick horror that it was still boiling. Her eyes moved slowly, stinging from the smoke and her nose wrinkling from the awful scent of cooked meat. She saw Sirius lying a few feet away with his eyes open, he was breathing raggedly and his face twisted in pain. She turned her head to see Remus lying in a crumpled heap, one arm thrown over his head but he wasn’t moving. Slowly she began crawling over to him, her wrist must have been sprained as she couldn’t put any weight on it. When she reached Remus’ side she began shaking him, her fingers found his pulse and she sighed as she felt it beating beneath his flesh. Slowly she moved his arms away from his head and saw he had suffered a bump on his temple, which explained his unconsciousness.
Peter saw James lying in what appeared to be a pool of blood, his eyes widened but he saw James stirring fit fully and sighed. He must have been alive.
Sirius managed to force himself into a crawling position, one hand clamped firmly over his broken ribs as he dragged himself inch by agonising inch to James. After what could have been a decade but was more likely a few minutes, he reached his lovers side. James lifted himself up shakily onto all fours before sitting on his knees and gazing blearily into Sirius’ face. It only took a second for Sirius to scan him and see he wasn’t fatally wounded before he dragged him to close and began kissing every part of his face he could reach. He ignored the sharp agony that flared in his side as James’ arms enveloped him in warmth, they sighed together before parting. It was then Sirius noticed their missing comrades. Slowly the rest of the world reached him and he turned to see Remus slowly being revived by Lily and several corpses. One was close at hand and was certainly the Auror who had been rude to him, he moved towards him slowly and gazed down into his blank face. It was the first time Sirius had seen a corpse like this, he had seen his grandmothers when he was little but that was so long ago he could hardly remember it. It was surreal, seeing that man lying there with a slightly surprised expression on his face and his glazed eyes staring blindly into the sky. He looked like a wax replica and was as cold as one, Sirius drew away and turned to see James stood above something else. With great difficulty he forced himself to his feet and shuffled over to his side, what he saw hit him like a train. He felt winded again and almost fell to his knees, he leaned on James heavily and buried his face in his hair. “Shit.” He hissed.
The second Auror was lying in a tangled mess of burnt flesh and twisted bones, his face was melted, unrecognisable. The only reason Sirius knew who he was, was by the chunk of blond hair that had survived the inferno. The smell was rank, a disturbing smell of roasted pork, thick hot blood and melted fat. Sirius gagged and turned away, still favouring his side.
Lily turned to the sound of someone retching, she saw Sirius almost bent double as he gagged on the smell. She couldn’t blame him, it was disgusting. Remus was leaning heavily on her as they searched for the rest of the bodies, she saw several Death Eaters and the last Auror but then she stumbled on something and nearly spilled herself and Remus to the floor. When she had regained her footing she looked down and saw a severed arm. In its hand was clutched a burnt stick of wood, a stick of wood she knew. “Oh no!” She cried and James and Sirius turned towards her voice. “No! No Benjy!”
Sirius saw what she was looking at and turned away, his stomach twisted painfully and he felt it push his lunch back up. He vomited helplessly onto the floor and felt James’ hand pulling his hair from his face. “F-Fuck…” He gasped, tears of pain and grief stung his eyes. “Benjy…Oh shit…!”
