LEECH
Chapter 52
Severus had no idea what to say. There was absolutely no excuse for what he’d said to her, his behaviour was inexcusable.
“Albus, would you excuse us pleas.” He said, never taking his eyes from Kathy’s.
“No. Why should he leave? I want him to stay. You leave.” She demanded.
“Albus.” Severus said again, eyes still locked to hers.
Albus was unsure what he should do. “Perhaps if we both left Severus, let Kathy have some time on her own. You too could do with thinking about your actions before you make any further comment.”
“”I am going nowhere, so if you wouldn’t mind Albus.”
“Don’t you dare tell Albus what to do in my rooms. You have no right, no right at all. Just as you have no right being in here, no right saying those things. I hate you Severus Snape. I trusted you more than anyone and you… get out.” She cried at him.
“Not until you let me apologise.” He shouted back. “I was drunk, I didn’t know what I was saying. I would never have said those things to you if I was sober.”
“Rubbish. You’re a liar. Is that why you got drunk, because you didn’t have the guts to tell me how you felt unless you had a bottle of whisky in you? You could have told me Severus. You could have just said you weren‘t interested in me any more. You could have been… less cruel. I didn’t deserve that, I didn’t.” She sobbed openly now and fell back into the chair.
Albus watched and listened, unsure what to say, if anything. ‘Well at least they are communicating.’ He thought while quietly slipping out of the door. Hopefully they would shout and argue, then make up as all lovers do.
Neither Kathy or Severus even noticed he was missing.
“Kathy please, I’m sorry, truly I am. When I saw you with… them, their paws all over you, I lost it. I… “
“What? Who? What paws?”
“Black and Lupin, who do you think? I saw you Kathy.”
“No Severus. You saw what you wanted to see and nothing more. If you’d waited for just one moment you’d have seen that we were talking. Nothing else, just talking. I though we had something Severus. Something special. You told me you cared and it was a lie. Nothing but a big fat lie. Please, just leave me alone.”
“I do care, I meant it then and I mean it now.”
“You don’t say hurtful cruel words to someone you care about Severus, you give them the benefit of the doubt. I’m tired and I want to go to bed. I’ve had a bad couple of days and an even worse time getting down here. Please, just go will you.”
“No.”
“Fine, stay there or close the door on your way out. I’m past caring.” She said as she stood and walked into the bedroom. Kathy closed the door, jammed a chair under the doorknob and climbed into bed. She’d had enough and didn’t want to argue any more tonight.
Severus stared at the door for a few minutes, mulling ever everything that was said, then he placed his finger back in the pensive. He sat and viewed the same scene over and over, not noticing the tears that rolled slowly down his cheeks. He’d finally found someone he cared about, even better she returned those feelings, and in one stupidly ridiculous, childishly angry evening he’d ruined it. Thrown it away in a jealous rage and a bottle of whiskey.
He stayed in her living room, unwilling to leave even though he knew how pointless it was. When he woke the next morning to discover that Kathy had risen early and snuck past him while he slept he knew that was it, nothing he could do or say would convince her that he was sorry.
Kathy avoided him as much as possible over the next couple of weeks. It was inevitable that they would cross paths from time to time, but she tried her best to ignore him.
Severus found himself once again out in the cold. He was excluded from her evening discussions with Albus. Several of the staff were now on a visiting basis, while Severus was left to brood in his office or rooms.
He told himself he didn’t care, that it was nothing but a brief affair and he’d allowed himself to be stupidly sidetracked by it. He almost believed it too.
Kathy also tried to convince herself that her affair with Severus had been a mistake, that the enforced closeness of being trapped down here with him was the main reason she’d eventually given into him and fancied herself in love.
Albus repeatedly suggested he be brought back in on their discussions and trials, reminding her it was imperative that Voldemort believed they were involved in some way for the plan to work.
“Albus I don’t care what Voldemort wants anymore, I really don’t. In fact I think I’d prefer to go back and live a lonely life in my own time, rather than live one here.”
“Kathy, you don’t mean that surely. Think of all the lives you will save by helping us. You have almost total control now of your Leeching, and although the incident with the unicorn took a lot out of you, at least you know there is more to your ability than we originally thought. Would you be truly happy knowing what you do, knowing what is yet to happen, if you were taken back to your own time?”
“That’s not fair Albus. You’re not fair. How can you ask me that? It’s just… not fair.”
The old wizard watched as his last hope for salvation sat and cried. He’d been so happy for her and Severus when they became close. It was more than he’d originally hoped for, and even though he worried that something would go wrong, that one of them would end up being lost in the midst’s of all this madness, the thought of Severus finally allowing himself to move past his obsession with Lily filled him with joy. With hope.
But nothing he, Minerva, or anyone said could bring about a change of heart in Kathy.
Oddly enough it was Voldemort who succeeded where others failed.
They were at #12, various members of the Order relating events since the last meeting. Voldemort had been quiet recently and no new attacks were reported. There was worry over the Dementors deserting Askaban, the heavy, smoggy depression that was settling over wide area’s of England, both the muggle and wizarding neighbourhoods.
Fudge was finally ousted from his position as Minister for Magic, his place taken by the former head of the auror department, Rufus Scrimshaw. The current muggle Prime Minister had reported an increasing number of hospitals admitting severely depressed patients, and the psychiatric wards and care homes were full to bursting with people who had gone from being normal, everyday folk, to suddenly being mindless zombies.
The muggle elections were coming soon as well, and that meant obliviating the old Prime Minister and re educating the new one.
Kathy was asked to Leech Kingsley again. He was taking the role of personal assistant to whoever was elected and the heightened senses he acquired from the process would allow him to achieve more information then would normally be possible.
She agreed on condition that Albus let her go back to her own time once she had done so.
Saddened though he was, Albus had no choice but to agree.
When Severus discovered this he was frantic. “No Albus you can’t. She can’t. I nee… we need her, you know that.”
“I have no choice in the matter Severus. She insists that she will do no more once Kingsley has been Leeched. Her words I believe were along the lines of ‘Better to be alone in my own time, then alone here in a strange place.’ At least in her own time she was comfortable. She knew what was around the corner, what to expect, as far as one can expect. Here she sees nothing but alienation in a strange world. A world she knew nothing of a little under a year ago.”
“Hell this is all my fault.” Severus rubbed his face in his hands. “I should never have Aahh!”
He grabbed his arm where the mark burnt fiercely.
Kathy dropped the saucer she was washing at the faint twinge in her left arm. It wasn’t painful, Severus’ magic had just about left her now. But she knew what it meant, and as much as she told herself she loathed the wizard, the thought of him being summoned still terrified her.
