The next few days were crazy. Everyone was focused on the baby, but James
and Lucius appreciated the help. James
was exhausted and spent a lot of the time sleeping. Lucius spent hours in a rocking chair by the
bed gazing down in amazement at his newborn son, Julian Balthezar Malfoy.
The evening before the kids were supposed to go back to
school James was up in the boys’ room helping Harry pack. Draco was spending time with his baby
brother, and the Weasley kids were out playing Quidditch.
“You’re going to have to pick one you know,” James blurted
out as he handed Harry his socks.
Harry took the socks giving his father a confused look. “What are you talking about?” he asked.
“Ginny and Draco,” James answered. “I see the way you look at them. Well, I see the way you look at Ginny, and
the way Draco looks at you. But you
shape shifted into Draco.”
“The choice is easy.
I’m not gay.”
James raised an eyebrow.
“I just want to know one thing.
Are you saying that because you’re really not,
or because you don’t think you should be?”
Harry opened his mouth to say something, but he was
speechless. He honestly didn’t know the
answer. “I’m the ‘Chosen One’.”
James nodded. “That
answers that question. Tell me, why is
what everyone else thinks or expects so important?”
Harry couldn’t answer that question either. He’d spent most of his school career trying
to ignore nasty looks and rumors.
James pulled Harry to sit on the bed with him. “Harry, I know I haven’t really been a good
father, but listen carefully to what I’m about to tell you. True love is a special and rare thing. But contrary to what fairy tales would have
us believe, it’s not instant or easy.”
“So you don’t believe in love at first sight?”
James shook his head.
“No. I believe in lust at first
sight…. Harry, what people call ‘love at
first sight’ is physical attraction.
Physical attraction is important in a relationship, but it’s not
everything.”
“Why do you love Lucius?” Harry asked curiously.
James shrugged.
“Honestly, I have no idea. It
started out as a curious attraction.
Then we started to like each other.
Now we’re engaged and have a baby.”
“But Draco’s going to be my step-brother. You can’t honestly say there’s nothing wrong
with that.”
James shrugged. “It’s
not illegal. If he makes you happy then
I’m happy.”
Harry sighed and turned his head to stare out the
window. He certainly had a lot to think
about. If only life were simple.
The morning the kids were to return to school Dumbledore had
a temporary Floo connection made between the Weasleys’ home and Professor
McGonagall’s office. They all agreed it
would be the quickest and safest way to transport them.
James and Lucius were going to go back, but they couldn’t
take the baby through the Floo. They
would have to take the Knight Bus to Hogsmeade.
They saw the kids off, and then went to pack everything up.
Harry hoped Hermione would be in a better mood, and at first
it seemed that she was. She raced over
to greet them and asked about the baby.
Harry showed her a few pictures, which she cooed over. But as soon as Lavender showed up Hermione
stormed off in a huff again.
Harry’s next private lesson was later that evening. Dumbledore showed him a memory collected from
Professor Slughorn. The only problem was
that it had been tampered with. Harry
suddenly understood why Dumbledore wanted Slughorn to come back, and why he’d
used Harry to lure the retired Professor back.
Harry’s next task was to get the original memory from
Slughorn. He hoped that it wouldn’t be
too hard since Slughorn seemed to really like him. The problem was how best to approach
him.
Harry tried after the next class, but Slughorn only got
upset and ushered him out of the room.
Harry quickly found out that it wasn’t going to be as easy as he
anticipated. He tried asking his friends
for ideas, but none of them had any.
Hermione’s only idea was to search the library for information on
Horcruxes.
Harry and Draco went to visit their fathers and brother on
Saturday morning. James and Lucius were
settling in, and were missing all the help they’d had over Christmas. Harry missed his brother, and was only too
happy to give Julian his morning feeding.
As Harry stared down at the innocent face of the week old
baby a million different emotions hit him at once. The future of the wizarding world rested on
his shoulders. He had to get that memory
from Slughorn. He had to make the world
a safe place for his baby brother.
“Dad, do you know anything about Horcruxes?” he asked suddenly.
“Funny you should ask,” James said and he started digging
through a desk drawer. He pulled out a
binder full of notes. “You remember the
research Dumbledore asked me to do over the summer?”
Harry nodded.
James set the binder on the desk. “I didn’t find much about how to make them,
but there’s lots on how to destroy them.
Dumbledore told me to give you my notes whenever you came to ask.”
“How did he know I’d come ask you?”
James shrugged. “How
does he know anything?”
When Julian finished eating Draco took him to burp him. Harry couldn’t help but think that Draco
looked good holding a baby. He also
couldn’t help remembering what his dad had said to him. There was just one problem. What if it didn’t work out? Their fathers were getting married and they
shared a brother. If things ended badly
they’d still have to see each other.
A few minutes later Julian started to fuss and James took
him back. Harry grabbed the notes and
ushered Draco out into the hall. “Draco,
I just thought of something. You want me
to go out with you so badly, but have you ever considered what would happen if
it didn’t work out?”
Draco nodded. “Then
we’ll exchange pleasantries on the holidays.”
He moved forward to pin Harry against the wall, their noses nearly touching. “But what if it does work out? Harry, please, give me one date. We can go out on the next Hogsmeade
weekend. Just give me a chance, and then
I’ll leave you alone if you want me to.”
Harry stood speechless.
Draco’s closeness was making his breath come in short gasps. “I… well…”
Would one date really hurt? “All
right, one date,” he agreed. Draco was
very persuasive.
Next Saturday the sixth years had their first Apparation
lesson. The tables were moved out of the
Great Hall and the anti-Apparation ward was lifted on the room. The students gathered to listen to a Ministry
official who had come to teach the lesson.
James stood in a corner to watch the lesson. Part of him wanted to cheer Harry on, and the
other part wanted to watch a room full of students all fall down at the same
time.
The students were separated and each was given a wooden hoop
that was set on the floor five feet in front of them. The instructor talked about the three D’s; Destination, Determination, and Deliberation. Then he went through it with them step by
step to have them try it. As expected,
they either leapt into the hoop, or fell over.
James covered his face with his hands and his whole body shook with silent
laughter.
McGonagall shot him a dirty look. “Is there a reason for you being here?” she
asked.
James nodded, keeping his face covered until he got his
laughter under control. Then he wiped
the tears from his eyes.
“Entertainment,” he mumbled.
McGonagall frowned, but didn’t say anything else. The lesson continued for an hour. Harry was having trouble concentrating; there
were just too many things going on for him to be able to empty his mind
completely. But on the very last attempt
he felt the familiar tightening feeling, and before he knew it he’d landed on
top of Hermione. Hermione shrieked and
pushed him off, glaring daggers at him.
“Sorry,” Harry said as he got to his feet.
“Very good!” the instructor clapped excitedly. “You missed the target, but it’s a
start. That’s the end of the lesson for
today. See you all next week.”
“Why did you land on me?” Hermione hissed at Harry as they
left the Great Hall.
“I said I was sorry….” Harry shrugged. “I didn’t do it on purpose. To be honest, I was wishing you and Ron would
make up.”
Hermione huffed and walked away. Harry sighed and headed back to Gryffindor
Tower. Draco was right behind him. “That was impressive,” the blond smiled. “I don’t think anyone has ever done it on the
first lesson.”
Harry shrugged. He
was too upset about his best friends being at each other’s throats to really be
proud of himself. Draco ran his fingers
through Harry’s hair. “They’ll come to
their senses eventually.”
Harry gave Draco a soft smile. He loved that Draco knew what was bothering
him without him having to say anything.
Maybe the two of them going out wasn’t such a crazy idea after all.
