“Are you sure he said Pier 62?” Annabel asked.
“One hundred percent,” James said. “Aiden practically tattooed it on my arm so I wouldn’t forget.”
Annabel took James’ arm and examined the golden map Aiden had attached to his arm with magic. There was a blinking red dot where they were supposed to be and a yellow dot where they were. They weren’t but twenty or thirty feet away.
23rd street at the Hudson River, Manhattan, New York, Pier 62
James pulled his arm back only to put it around her shoulder. “Samuel said that the scouts are fond of skateboarding.”
Annabel bit her lip in thought. “That’s a rather Muggle thing to be involved in, isn’t it?”
James shrugged. “The Master is a squib.”
“But she believes in Pureblood supremacy. I think she’d frown on her men participating in any sort of Muggle anything, sports included.”
“Maybe she doesn’t know.”
“Or it’s a trap.”
“Rhap said it wasn’t and I trust her.”
Annabel sighed and nodded before laying her head on James’ shoulder and allowing him to lead her further into the skate park. She had to admit that it was quite impressive. There were dozens of different ramps and obstacles to choose from. The closer they got, the more excited she was. The skaters’ moves reminded her of Quidditch moves. She found herself wanting to try it. Perhaps that was why The Master’s men preferred this place. Well, that and the fact that the walkers used to hang out here. She hoped the scouters didn’t pick up on her werewolf heritage. Then again, they might think she was a friendly.
“Don’t even think about it,” James growled in her ear.
“What?”
“Putting yourself in danger again. You’ve already done that one too many times.”
Annabel growled low in her throat. “What was I supposed to do then? Let you die?”
“Yes!”
Her lips quivered, eyes filling with tears. She felt like he’d slapped her. “Why?”
James swallowed hard. “Because if anything happened to you, I’m not sure I could even die in peace.”
“You don’t think I feel the same way?”
He sighed sadly. “You know I’m not worth it.”
Annabel abruptly stopped walking and turned him to face her, putting her hands on his cheeks so he couldn’t look away. “Don’t talk like that. You are worth it.”
James jerked his head back. “Albus-“
“Is happy,” she said quickly, before he could continue. “He can fly and be with his boyfriend and watch over all of us as long as he wants. Stop beating yourself up over this.”
“I can’t help it.”
Annabel frowned and grabbed his face again. “James, look at me.”
He slowly brought his eyes to meet hers.
“I love you.”
His jaw dropped open. He looked like he was ready to cry and howl at the moon all at the same time. “Really?”
She smiled at his insecurity. “Yes really. Do you honestly think I would sleep with you, give you something that special to me, if I didn’t?”
He blushed and then grinned at her. “I love you too. Always have.”

“Yeesh,” Scorpius muttered with a grimace as he observed James and Annabel having a moment from a far off bench. “I feel like I’ve been trapped in one of Ara’s Muggle soap operas.”
“I think it’s romantic,” Ara snapped, smacking him in the stomach.
“If you like poofers.”
Lizzy gasped. “Scorpius! That’s positively awful!”
Scorpius furrowed his brows. “What?”
“One word,” Ara said through gritted teeth. “Albus.”
Scorpius’s eyes got round as saucers. “I didn’t mean it that way. Besides, Al wasn’t sappy like that.”
Lizzy crossed her arms and huffed. “There’s nothing wrong with sappy. In fact, I think you could probably learn a few things from them.”
Scorpius spluttered and stumbled as she marched off, pleading with her to come back.
Colton shook his head. “Man, your brother blew that.”
Ara snorted. “I’ll say.”
Colton threw his arm over her shoulder. “So, have you heard anything suspicious yet?”
She shook her head. “Besides James and Annabel professing their love and a ton of expletives from various skaters messing up, not much. I’m not sure they’re here.”
“I’m not sure it was wise using James and Annabel as bait.”
Ara bit her lip and watched as the couple in question started snogging like their life depended on it. They’d almost lost them once. To put them out there like this… and without their knowledge… it was a bit nerve wracking.
“Hey,” Colton said softly. “I’m sure they’ll be fine. I mean, how many of us are out there?”
She shrugged. “I’m sure Nate and Zach wouldn’t let anyone get within twenty yards… if Aiden didn’t stop them first. It’s just… we’ve lost so much.”
Colton sighed and pulled her into his lap. “We’ll find them Ara.”
---
“Damn it Scorp,” Nate hissed, watching Scorpius trying to console Lizzy from another pier.
“He’s going to need some help,” Zach snickered.
“He’s making a scene,” Nate huffed.
“Isn’t that what we wanted?” Violetta asked.
“I believe it was,” Anastasia muttered.
“I stand corrected,” Nate sighed. “But Scorp is buggering it up something fierce, isn’t he?”
“What do you expect?” Zach asked absentmindedly as he scanned the pier. “He’s never had a relationship that lasted over a week.”
“Until now,” Nate said with a smirk. “Maybe.”
“She’s just upset at his insensitivity,” Vi said quietly.
“Um, sweetheart?” Zach said cautiously. “There isn’t really a sensitive bone in Scorp’s body.”
“Yes there is,” Vi huffed. “I’ve seen it, especially with Rose.”
“Quiet,” Anastasia snapped. “See the guy in the hood?”
The four tensed as a guy in a black hoodie slunk through the shadows, sticking close to trees and random couples lingering on the dock. He seemed to be zeroed in on Scorpius as he pulled Lizzy close and muttered apologies for his behavior.
“Call,” Nate said slowly.
“On it,” Zach said, flipping open a compact. “Head’s up. They’re going for the wrong bait.”
“No they aren’t,” Aiden whispered into the mirror. “Fifteen feet to the left of James.”
“Shit,” Nate muttered, spotting another guy crouching down behind a bench nearby. “Dark blue hoodie.”
“What’s with the hoodies?” Ana whispered.
“Well, if it’s a uniform, it’ll be easier to spot,” Aiden said. “There’s three in the little alcove between two obstacles. Looks like they’re waiting for a signal.”
“These guys are sophisticated,” Zack muttered. “It’s a pack fight.”
“Cadence,” Aiden hissed. “Cadence, where are you? They’re moving in on James.”
“Um guys,” Cadence’s shaky voice caught everyone’s attention. “We have a bigger problem on our hands.”
“What?” Aiden asked, tensed on his perch atop the complex. “What is it?”
“I… I think there’s been an escape.”
“Escape?” Zach and Nate asked in sync.
“Either Draco has another brother… or Cygnus has escaped. He’s with Gregory.”
“Fuck,” Aiden growled. “Out, pull out!”
“James and Annabel are too far into it,” Ara cried in horror.
“Take Lizzy,” Scorpius called, forcefully pushing his mate towards his sister before taking off at a dead run towards James.
“What are you doing?” Ara yelled.
“I’m going to take him out,” Scorpius growled, ducking down and pouring on the speed.
He hoped to get James’ attention before he barreled into him. At least then, he could avoid crushing his cousin and maybe take a few of their guys with him. He wasn’t worried about being carted off by the scouts but he knew James and Annabel couldn’t take it again. He wouldn’t let them.
The problem was… James wasn’t paying attention. He was too busy snogging Annabel. He wondered idly if Annabel was so turned on that she couldn’t hear. Surely she’d picked up on all the yelling. And he knew they definitely had a compact. But he couldn’t think about that now. He had to get their attention without alerting the Master’s men. He was sure that no one but Gregory and Cygnus knew who he was. Maybe the resemblance would throw them off for a moment. He had to think faster. He was almost there. Then it dawned on him. They were snogging!
“Get your hands off my sister you bastard!” Scorp screamed at the top of his lungs.
James whirled around and leapt out of the way, dragging Annabel with him just in time for Scorpius to drive right into the guy standing a dozen feet behind them. The guy folded in half, groaning on the ground. His buddies jumped back in shock, not quite sure what had just happened.
Scorpius bit back a grin and staggered backwards. “Sorry mate. That fucker moved.”
He turned and made to tackle James again, only to ‘accidentally’ miss and plow into another guy who crumpled like a piece of paper. By then, the others hanging around were too busy trying to pick their guys off the ground to come at James any more. Scorpius made a show of growling and pointing at James, making his intent not to miss this time exceedingly clear.
“You!”
James widened his eyes in a comical fashion and made a break for the restrooms on pier 61 so he could disapparate. Annabel waited until Scorpius blew past her before she ran too, screaming for him to leave her boyfriend alone, that she loved him, that he didn’t understand. She might not have known exactly what was going on, but she caught on pretty quick.
“Move, move, move,” Scorpius hissed as he flew past his sister.
Ara had sent Lizzy and Colton on ahead but she couldn’t leave her brother. Scorp might be able to take on an entire army by himself, but she wouldn’t let him. She was just glad Colton agreed to haul Lizzy out of there. The girl was powerful but entirely too timid yet to thrust into battle. Unfortunately, Ara’s hesitancy to leave Scorp was her own downfall. She was unceremoniously tackled from behind by a hooded thug. At least Annabel had gotten away.
“Ara!”
She heard the shout clear as day, though she doubted any of her assailants did. She was caught in between wanting to turn and hex every last one of her opponents and laughing her arse off because she wouldn’t even get a chance once Aiden and his brothers started in on them. She could hear them running now. Scorpius had just turned, realizing she wasn’t behind him. There would be a fight... in front of hundreds of muggles. Fuck.
“Not so fast walker,” one of her assailants hissed.
“What in the bloody fuck are you on about?” she snapped, turning to face them.
They looked like a cross between amused and confused. In a desperate move, she used legilimency on the closest foe. His name was Artie, just a teenager, dragged into this by his older brother. That line sounded familiar. They had developed a spell to find walkers and she and Scorpius and tested positive. Huh. Perhaps that tiny drop of Severus’s blood was really strong if they could detect it. She pushed harder, hoping that no one else was wiser. Artie was fighting her valiantly but she’d been trained by her mother and father, two very formidable minds trained by the best of the best. She needed to know more and she knew Aiden wouldn’t be far off.
“British, eh?” one of the boys taunted. “Sounds like this might be a different sort, guys.”
Ara ignored their taunts. It was a distraction. As long as she was rooting around in someone’s mind, she wanted to make sure it counted. She searched high and low, finally finding what she needed, a picture of a hideout. She snatched the memory, mentally copying it and forcing it into her mind to show later. If they were fast enough, they might find their base camp before anyone knew what happened. She needed to cover her tracks though. She quickly slipped out of his mind and muttered a blanket obliviate, hoping that he would just think he zoned out a moment. She hadn’t been in long.
“What do you think you’re doing with her?”
Ara turned to see that Aiden had indeed gotten there first.
“This is no concern of yours,” one of the boys started but stopped abruptly. His mouth hung open for a moment before he pointed. “He’s one.”
The next few minutes were a blur. Someone snatched her off the ground… Scorpius… and he was running for all he was worth. She looked over her shoulder to see a mass of dark hoodies and dark haired boys going at it. To her relief, there wasn’t any cast magic. She wasn’t sure if they were actually smart enough not to use it or too stunned that the Snapes would be so vicious that they momentarily forgot they were wizards.
“What the fuck, Ara?” Scorpius hissed in her ear as they turned a corner.
She looked at her brother who looked a little green. She felt a pang of regret for that. She hadn’t meant to worry him so badly. But, she’d managed to get a valuable piece of information. It had to be enough. Coming back again was not wise, unless they wanted to start a full scale war on the Hudson river in full view of every muggle within a few miles radius.
“I got something,” she whispered, hoping to put his mind at ease.
“What?”
“I got something from his mind, an image of their base camp. We don’t have time to lose!”
“We’ve got to get them out of there first,” Scorpius said, glancing around the corner to see that the boys had managed to lay most of the hoodie wearing attackers out cold. “Well, never mind.”
Ara giggled. “I think they can handle themselves.”
“We can,” Zach answered, strolling around the corner. “They won’t be out long though.”
“Let’s go,” Scorp said, lifting Ara into his arms despite her loud protests.
“Put me the fuck down Scorp! I can bloody well walk all by myself.”
“I’m not losing you again,” Scorpius said seriously before making a beeline to the restrooms.

“Would you believe they’re hanging out in part of the Statue of Liberty?” Rhapsody said after she finished reading Ara at the hotel. “The torch.
“Wouldn’t be surprising, would it?” Zandra piped up. “The torch has been closed since 1916. No one goes there unless they have to replace the floodlights, and even then the workers use ladders. Besides, it would give you ultimate casting range and ease of access. Most people wouldn’t notice a broom that high up, especially if it was disillusioned. And if the torch happened to fall, you could simply apparate away.”
“Have you been chatting with Hermione lately?” Severus drawled from the corner.
Zandra blushed horribly. “I just… I’ve never been to New York and I thought I’d read up a bit on it so I wasn’t so lost.”
“I happen to think it’s wonderful,” Hermione added. She’d been lounging against the wall the entire time. “We know where they are now. What we don’t know… is when they’ll be there.”
“I’d imagine they’re there now,” Rhapsody said, her eyes closed. “They left shortly after they came to. Brilliant beating, by the way boys.”
“Our pleasure,” Zach said with a grin.”
“Alright, settle down,” Melody said, clapping her hand to get everyone’s attention. “We have much to discuss. First order of business, we have their base. We’ll need to move on that as fast as possible, flush them out, hold them for info. We’ll need some volunteers.”
“I’ll do it!” two dozen voices rang out.
Melody chuckled. “I know you’re all eager to give them what for, but this must be a precision operation. Normally I’m not prejudice about age or power, you all know that. However, I think it would be wise to send in the A team on this. So, Rhap, Cadence, you two pick four others besides your mates. You’ll be doing the raid.”
The children all murmured back and forth amongst themselves, hating the idea and agreeing at the same time. The walkers, who were a bit shell shocked at all the activity, sat in the magically enlarged room and listened to the bickering. They couldn’t believe their eyes. Furthermore, this entire family thought their strange and rare malady was anything but. The family brought them a sense of hope they hadn’t had in a long time.
“ENOUGH!” Melody shouted, earning absolute silence. “That’s better. Second on the docket, I would like a couple of you to speak with Eldin the elf in Central Park. We need to know if they have more than one base or if there is a pattern to their movements. I had thought Violetta and Anastasia would be best for that for obvious reasons. Boys, you’ll go with them?”
“Yes ma’am,” Nate and Zach answered simultaneously.
“Good,” Melody said. “He lives in a nearby oak. I’ll give you a memory of the place before you leave. Now then, we’ll need a scouting crew. We know the scouts like to hang out by the river, but we don’t know how many, how permanent, or how far they spread. Nahuatl, can you take Al and Martin out for a turn?”
“My pleasure,” Nahuatl said softly, stroking the two colorful birds on her shoulders.
“Wonderful,” Melody sighed. “I don’t like you being alone though. Any volunteers to watch their backs?”
“We’ll do it,” Lily piped up.
“Sorry sweetie,” Melody said. “I have another job in mind for you two. Anyone else?”
“I’ll go,” a deep voice sounded from the back.
“Samuel,” Melody said softly. “Are you certain?”
Samuel nodded his head. “I grew up on the river. It’s my home.”
“It’ll be dangerous,” Melody warned. “They have tracking spells targeted for walkers.”
Samuel shrugged. “No different from every other day.”
Melody pursed her lips in thought before nodding. “Very well. Maybe your combined signatures will throw them off. While those three missions are carried out, Harm, Phil, Alex, and I are going to try and find this damned vampire who has taken a liking to pregnant women. Not that I don’t love walkers, but I think we can all agree that life would be better without the bloodlust.”
“Here, here,” Talia and Clark said at the same time.
Melody grinned, baring her fangs for a moment before sucking them back in. “That leaves two more groups. Those staying here will be learning from Sev and Celeste. That’s why I asked you to stay here Lily bean. You and Cecil have some studying to do. Any questions?”
“You said two groups,” Zandra said softly. “What is the second group going to do?”
Melody sighed. “Try to find out how in the fuck Cygnus escaped.”
“I just got a call from Harry,” Celeste said as she walked in the room. “He said the blood wards at the Manor have been activated. Dormer is still there. Cygnus couldn’t bust him through the wards. Dormer is in bad shape though, ward backlash. Harry doesn’t expect him to survive the next few hours.”
“Tell him to come when Dormer is dead,” Melody said distractedly.
“What is it?” Draco asked, noticing her lack of attention.
“Draco, when your father died, your mother tied those wards to the Black and Malfoy sides, more specifically to you.”
“And my magic,” Draco said. “But Bellatrix was my Aunt. How much closer genetically can you get?”
“Cygnus doesn’t have a blood bond with a walker.”
“He might,” Cadence spoke up. “He looked… strange.”
“He doesn’t have it to that walker,” Melody said, pointing to Severus. “Does he look the same as Draco and Hermione?”
“No,” Cadence said softly. “But he is different, more animalistic somehow, like an unacknowledged animagus is waiting to explode from him.”
“Animagus or creature blood,” Aiden growled.
Cadence gasped. “That’s what it was. He… he looked like a… like a…”
“Like a what?” James asked.
“Like a cat version of a werewolf.”
“Holy shit,” Melody breathed. “They found the shifters.”
“What?” the entire room asked.
Melody shook her head. “Shifters are like werewolves, only they aren’t subject to lunar cycles rather than nightfall in general. They are like animagi… only they’re completely non-magical. Well, in a sense I guess. Shifters take on their animal’s traits, ferocity, speed, agility, what have you. They retain their human mind during the shift, which can either make them completely harmless or absolutely deadly.”
“They’d have to have magic to shift,” Hermione said.
“Yes, but there are non-wizard werewolves too,” Melody countered. “But, where werewolves are bitten, shifting is inherited, like a mutant gene. They would have similar properties though.”
“If they were able to harness that power?” Draco asked.
Melody shuddered. “It’d be like fighting werewolves again. Only… there are no known weaknesses for shifters, besides straight up besting them.”
“We’ll find Cygnus,” Draco said quietly. “Where he goes, The Master is bound to follow.”
“Mum! Dad!”
Hermione and Draco stood up and allowed their children to run and embrace them. One last hug. Cygnus was harmless, but armies upon armies of people bound and determined to destroy them? It could very well be their last.
