“This is a glorious day indeed,” Dumbledore started. “These two young couples before us have decided to break the bonds of the past and forge new ones. They are trailblazers.”
The gathering was almost as small as it was for Hermione and Draco’s wedding. There were a few more guests, Naomi in particular. Snape, in a shocking turn of events, had given both the brides away. Luna and Neville stood in for Daphne and Justin as witnesses. Hermione and Draco agreed to witness Theo and Theresa’s vows. Harry and Ginny grinned like idiots and even Ron had cleaned up a bit and offered to escort Venus. Snape was not happy until Venus revealed that he wasn’t interested in her that way.
The room had truly outdone itself. They were standing on a hill at Glen Nevis during sunrise with no risk for the vampires to burn if they hadn’t taken their potion. White folding chairs allowed the few guests to sit. Since Theresa and Daphne had a few more weeks to plan than the Malfoys, both were wearing simple wedding dresses. Theo and Justin had procured black dress robes and proper wedding bands.
Draco eyed the rings as Dumbledore made the couples repeat their vows. He desperately wanted to get Hermione a ring but she’d been completely against it. They had the runes on their wrists and that was enough for her. But he didn’t feel like it was. Their affair had been rushed and though Ginny had tried to make it the best day ever, he still felt that Hermione had been cheated. She should have a proper ring, the kind of bauble that she could hold her hand out and prove that she was a treasured wife.
Hermione squeezed Draco’s hand, knowing he was drifting off. She’d seen him eye the couples as they exchanged rings. He’d expressed his want to purchase wedding bands but she didn’t want one. Well, not for the reason he thought. She wouldn’t mind having the ring, but it would make it official. She knew their marriage was forever but she didn’t want to advertise just yet. She felt that wearing a ring would draw too much attention… and subsequently put their little one in danger. She wasn’t worried for herself at all. She’d fought Lucius before, but her baby was helpless and one stray hex to the wrong part of her anatomy and… she shuddered.
Draco pulled Hermione closer when she shivered. He hoped she wasn’t cold, even though she was wearing three layers of clothing. He worried about that even now, that she was cold or hungry or scared and he wouldn’t be there. Strange, how quickly priorities changed. Before the room, he wouldn’t have given a niffler’s arse if Hermione was uncomfortable. Hell, he might have even laughed just so she’d narrow her eyes at him and leave him alone. But he didn’t want that anymore. He loved how she could read him like an open book, though no one else had that privilege.
“I now pronounce you husbands and wives,” Dumbledore said. “Gentlemen, you may kiss your brides.”
Hermione sighed happily as the new couples sealed their wedding vows with a kiss. Well, in actuality, they would seal them tonight. New contracts had already been drawn up and sighed. It didn’t negate the old one, not yet, not until they bedded their new partners, but it would. Hermione almost cackled at the thought. Take that stifling old pureblood traditions!
“You have done well.”
Draco and Hermione both shouted in surprise and whirled around to see the four founders and Magdalene standing proudly. They blew out a breath of air and nodded, silently thanking them for their presence. The founders hadn’t been spotted in centuries and for their appearance to grace not one, but two ceremonies, that was unprecedented.
“Thank you,” Draco said as calmly as he could. His heart was still racing.
“Blimey,” Nott breathed. “Is that… the-“
“Godric Gryffindor,” the ghost announced himself. “And this is Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin. I’m sure you recognize him young Slytherin housemate.”
Nott nodded dumbly.
Gryffindor smiled at him. “We have set your fellow peers with a task, to break down the walls of hate forged during my time. I must say they are doing quite well. Muggleborn Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws with two pureblood Slytherins, quite fine indeed, and a stunning addition to our Gryffindor and Slytherin pair. I do believe I notice a trend.”
“Well spotted,” Salazar Slytherin sniffed.
Gryffindor rolled his eyes. “Honestly Salazar, are you still cross?”
Slytherin huffed and picked his daughter up in his arms. “On the contrary. I do believe my Slytherin is outdoing himself.”
“Nonsense,” Godric snapped. “It is my Gryffindor that tempered him.”
Draco and Hermione stifled their laughs as the two founders went at it. The other couples were dumbfounded that the illustrious heads of the school were bickering like school age children. Helga floated over to them and grinned.
“How are you finding marriage?”
“Very well, thank you Madam Hufflepuff,” Hermione said softly, cringing when she heard gasps come from the newest couples.
“And the wee babe?”
“Doing well,” Draco answered, putting his hand over Hermione’s abdomen in a protective gesture.
Helga smiled at them. “She will be beautiful indeed and very intelligent. I see great things in her future… and yours. You should not hide from your young friends. Every couple needs a support system. I believe that is where I… we… failed.”
Draco nodded. “Yes Madam Hufflepuff.”
“You short sighted blighter!” Godric yelled, gaining their attention again.
Helga giggled. “I suppose we should break them up Rowena.”
Rowena nodded and the woman passed through their men, giving each a peck on the cheek that left them completely speechless.
“That is better,” Rowena huffed. “Shall we bless and be gone?”
The men clenched their jaws and nodded. Then the four turned as one and stared at the two newest couples for a moment before nodding.
“We bless you.”
The couples stared at thin air for a while after the founders disappeared. Nott came to his senses first.
“What in the bloody hell was that?”
Draco chuckled. “A blessing from the founders you dunce.”
“Y-you’re married?” Daphne stammered.
Draco sighed and nodded. “Have been for months.”
“And pregnant,” Theresa said shyly.
Hermione put her hand over her stomach. “It’s a girl.”
Justin huffed. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
Draco frowned. “I might not care one whit about my father, but he is still very dangerous. I’m surprised he hasn’t looked at the tapestry yet, but when he does… Hermione will be his number one target. I can’t let him kill my family so we are keeping it quiet. I know it’s a fool’s wishful thinking, but I do hope it will last until our daughter is born.”
“That’s not going to happen mate,” Nott said quietly. “Daph and me, we overheard Pansy taking a floo call last night. Apparently, her father managed to scrape together her dowry. They’ll be presenting it to Lucius soon.”
Draco’s jaw tightened. “It’s too late. I’m already married.”
“I know,” Nott said with a crooked grin. “And now so am I. But what about your father?”
Draco frowned and pulled Hermione closer to him. “He won’t get within a hundred feet of her.”
“I second that,” Harry yelled.
Everyone there pledged to do the same. Draco breathed a sigh of relief. For once in his life, Draco Malfoy had friends willing to fight for him… for his family and his future… and maybe Wizarding kind.
AN: Geez this is sappy. Ah well. Everyone needs a little sap. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. I really needed them yesterday. It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys!
