Loose Ends
Maurice Monterichelieu stood slowly, peering down at his daughter lying prone, her back rising and falling gently with her shallow breaths. He turned to exit the infirmary. Quick as a flash, Natalie rolled silently on to her side, slipping her wand from beneath the mattress, aiming at her father’s back, hissing, “Stupefy!”
He hit the floor, face first, nose breaking on impact. Natalie slithered from the bed, pressing the tip of her wand a bit harder than necessary against her father’s temple. “OBLIVIATE!”
She stood, wand in hand, looking down at her father’s now prone form. “I’ll chose my own role from here on, thank you anyway, Daddy.” Her lip curled into a snarl, her eyes dark and blank. “Episkey.” She whispered. With a swish and flick, she cleaned away the blood. Sliding back into her cot, she took careful aim, whispering, “Renervate,” then quickly slipped her wand back into its hiding place and resumed her position.
Monterichelieu lunged to his feet, staggering slightly, searching the room. Roaring in anger, he returned to Natalie’s side, examining her closely. Finally satisfied, he turned once again to leave the infirmary, pondering just how the hell he had ended up on the floor. With a final sneering glance back at Natalie, he pushed the heavy doors open, leaving the infirmary.

A sharp knocking on his door startled Severus from packing up his belongings for the summer holiday. He flung the door open harshly, hoping to knock the knocker. Nolan stood slightly to one side, knowing to avoid the sharp edge of the Potions Master’s door.
“Professor Snape?” Nolan held on two parcels and a note. “These were in with my sister’s things, I found them when I was packing for her. They are addressed to you.”
“Me?” Snape took the packages, curiosity mounting from deep within his consciousness. He opened the small blue velvet pouch first. Smiling, he glanced up at the anxious wizard watching him.
“She’s replacing my jobberknoll feathers, a few times over I might add.”
Suddenly, a vision of Lucius Malfoy lying prone and spread-eagle, mostly naked, spitting out the same word flashed into his subconscious, then flitted away more quickly than it came.
“She’s a witch of her word, Professor.” Nolan added softly.
“Indeed, she seems to be.” Snape commented dryly as he opened the second parcel, revealing a very old leather covered book, Modifying Memories Magically. Both of his coal black eyebrows disappeared under his heavy hair as he read the title. Nolan nearly swallowed his tongue when he saw which book his sister gifted to Snape. Natalie, what the hell were you thinking? A blue parchment envelope slipped out of the book. Snape fingered it pensively before looking up at Nolan.
“Mr. Richmond, I think I’ll read this in private.” He smiled inwardly, remembering his one delicious night with Natalie. Why in all the nine hells didn’t we try that again?
“Monterichelieu.” Nolan nearly whispered.
“Pardon?”
“Our name is really Monterichelieu.” Nolan stated a bit more loudly. Snape arched his eyebrow in consternation at Nolan who chewed on his lip thoughtfully.
“Natalie wanted to be accepted for her own merits, not her family’s.” Nolan explained further, finding it hard to tear his eyes from the book in Severus’ hand.
They were interrupted by a small green elf popping up in between them.
“Professor Snape sir?” The tiny voice quivered in fear.
“What?” He snapped.
“We’s finding this unders yours bed whiles we’s cleaning for summer.”
The little elf held up a glittering amethyst and leather bracelet, waiting in trepidation for the feared professor to claim it. Severus took the odd finding into his hand, letting it rest on the palm of his hand, oddly fascinated with the bracelet. The elf disappeared with another pop. Snape’s fascination served to keep him from noticing Nolan nearly hyperventilating in recognition. Natalie’s! Snape closed his hand around the crystals, and shoved it deep in his pocket before returning his attention to Nolan.
“Thank you for delivering these. I do hope your sister recovers soon. Where shall I send my proper thank you?” Snape’s eyes glittered interestedly at the slightly shorter, but more muscular wizard.
“Ah, uh, yes, um, you’re welcome, hmm, thank you ...” Nolan stuttered his way back to control. “She’ll be staying with Mairead Urley until she’s fully recovered. Send your thank you there.” Nolan turned quickly to exit before he said something untoward.
Snape watched the younger man walk away. He slipped the strangely familiar bracelet from his pocket, studying it more closely. An image of a definitely feminine wrist, the same bracelet adorning it, resting on his black wool clad leg, harsh blood red nails at the tips of the fingers, flashed through his memories. Snape vainly tried to mentally grab hold of the image, to pin it down firmly, but it slithered away from his grasp like a greased snake. Damn.
“What do you have there Severus?” Albus broke into his thoughts as he and Minerva approached him in the hallway.
“The house elves found this under my bed.”
Snape held up the bracelet for the other two to see.
“I’ve got the strangest feeling I’ve seen this bracelet somewhere before.” Minerva commented, reaching out to touch the stones.
“I as well.” Albus added mysteriously, his eyes not twinkling but gleaming with secret glee.
“Me too, I just can’t seem to place where.” Snape muttered, disconcerted.
“Amethyst is said to be a protective crystal. It might serve you well to keep it, my boy.” Albus chuckled softly at the glare he received from his Professor.
“Indeed.”
“A book, Severus?” Albus asked.
“Yes, a gift Mr. Rich, errr, Monterichelieu, found for me in his sister’s belongings.”
Severus handed the tome reverently to his Headmaster, slipping the letter out.
“Modifying Memories Magically. Severus, there’s no author credited.” Albus opened the book to the title page.
“How odd.” Minerva leaned over Albus shoulder to look at the book as well.
“Quite.” Snape snapped, holding out his hand for the book.
“Do take care with it, Severus. Dark Magic authors rarely publish their names.” Dumbledore warned.
“I will, Headmaster.” Snape turned crisply on his heel, robes billowing and disappeared through his own door.
Dear boy, I wonder how long before he realizes what has occurred.
