No One Comes When You Cry
Please someone, leave a review. I know the spelling and grammars crap, but what about the story itself?
Chapter 53
She clung tightly to Severus as the cart trundled rapidly downwards, turning at forty-five degree angles without slowing down and coming to a sudden stop after what seemed like forever. Sky was practically frozen to her seat in fright. No one had thought to warn her about the ride.
It was a relief when the cart finally stopped and she climbed out on shaky legs, Albus and Severus on each side, both of them smirking as they held her arms so she would not collapse.
“It’s easy to go off some people you know.” Sky said when she noticed their grins. “Have either of you spoken to Professor Trellawny yet?” She asked, smiling herself when their faces dropped.
“Erm, this is not really the time to discuss it.” Albus told her sheepishly. It was with some relief when the goblin announced they were at vault 104 and held his gnarled little hand out impatiently for the key.
“Ah yes, here we are.” Albus passed the key over after rummaging through several pockets in his robes.
The vault was opened and Severus escorted Sky into the vault, followed by Albus.
Along the left hand wall, stacked a fair bit higher than they could reach, were piles of Golden Galleons, Silver Sickles and Bronze Knutts. On the right there were wooden chests which on opening revealed gemstones of every colour imaginable. The back wall contained cabinets with wide drawers. Severus approached and opened several of them to find masses of scrolled documents, there were share holdings in many well known businesses, both in the magical and muggle world, a few land holdings, also in both, even a small amount of shares in Gringotts which was practically unheard of. The deeds for the house she was born in at Shropshire was in place, as well as a small estate in Edinburgh and a villa in Italy.
Other drawers revealed documents of a more personal nature. Birth, marriage and death certificates, photographs, bundles of letters to past generations and a rather large scroll that upon opening, proved to be a family tree. That particular scroll Severus reduced and tucked away quickly before Sky noticed. Further along was a cabinet full of various sized jewellery boxes, each containing a different generations jewellery, some of it so ancient Severus thought it must be at least several thousand years old. He called Sky over to see it.
She left Albus filling a couple of bags with Galleons for her and went to see what Severus had found.
“Oh look at it all, is this mine too?”
“Everything in this vault is yours Sky.”
Sky was in awe of everything she saw. Never had she imagined anything like this. Severus held out an open box to her, containing a sapphire and diamond necklace, bracelet, ring and earring set. She just stared at it, her eyes wide and her mouth opening and closing but unable to react.
It was only when Severus saw the whites of her eyes that he realised this was too much of a shock for her, and considering her condition he was not surprised when he was forced to drop the box and catch her when she fainted.
Albus quickly transfigured a Galleon into a small bed and Severus laid her on it. The goblin appeared inside with a glass and a jug of iced water. Where it came from neither wizard asked as Severus sat her up a little and held the glass of water to her lips.
“Is that better?” He asked as she tried to push herself into a sitting position and focus at the same time.
“What happened? I feel odd.”
“You fainted. I think today has been rather taxing for you, and we did not make allowances for the fact you are pregnant. Lets get you back to Hogwarts and into bed.”
“No, I don’t want to go to bed. I’ll be fine in a minute, honest. Just give me a chance to absorb all of this, please Severus.”
“I think Severus is right. We have driven you too hard and you need to be home. There will be plenty of further opportunities to return and I am certain Severus will be happy to escort you anytime.” Albus said.
She looked from one wizard to the other and knew she wouldn’t win this argument. “Okay, but can we call at the broomstick shop again before we go back? Please.”
“Definitely not.” Severus told her, outrage written all over his face as he helped her to her feet.
She was too tired to argue, besides which there was a more urgent problem now.
“Erm Severus. I need the toilet.” She whispered. “Desperately.”
“Oh good Gods.” He muttered. “Sky, this is a bank, it does not have bathrooms. You will have to wait until we are out of here.”
“It is not a problem Sir, We have bathrooms on each and every level here at Gringotts. If the young lady would care to follow me.” The goblin said from the doorway.
Severus and Albus were both surprised at this revelation, but Sky was so in need of emptying her bladder she ignored them and followed the goblin as quickly as she could.
He led her a short way down the corridor, past several vaults and stopped at a door.
“I will wait here for you madam.” he told her, opening the door to a magnificently ornate bathroom.
The whole room was decked out in gold and silver. Sky had never seen anything like it. Even the loo was gold, if a bit cold to sit on.
“Thank you. Do you think I could use this door again in a few minutes?” She asked the goblin when she came out.
“If you wish madam, yes.” He answered, looking at her oddly.
Severus and Albus emerged from the vault to see Sky with a grin on her face.
“You should see that place, its all gold and silver. It’s also got a normal door so I wont need to go in that cart again to get out of here.
The goblin was stunned when the trio said thank you to him and Sky opened the bathroom door and all three went inside before closing it behind them.
Curious he opened it and saw only the bathroom, devoid of occupants and almost dropped his lamp in shock. This would never do, Gringotts security had just been breeched and he would have to report it to his boss immediately.
Severus, Albus and Sky emerged in Severus’ quarters and the Potions Master ushered her straight off to bed, none of them aware of the panic they’d caused at the most secure bank in the wizarding world.
Once Sky was settled into bed and Effy called to watch over her, Severus went through to talk to Albus.
“How is she Severus?”
“She is fine, sleeping peacefully. Albus I found this in her vault.” He pulled out the scroll, enlarged it and spread it out on the table for the older wizard to see.
“Her family tree. How wonderful.” Albus exclaimed. “Ah, I see why you have it now. Severus you cannot tell her about this, you know that.”
“I do not see why not, she will have to know eventually. Though the thought of being related to …good heavens, Albus have you seen this?” Severus pointed to a particular branch of the tree. “Oh Merlin no.” The Potion Master exclaimed. “Albus if you ever breathe one word of this to anyone, I shall personally see to it that your family jewels are ensconced in a Gringotts vault, independently of your person.”
The old Headmaster smiled, regardless of Severus’ threat he was delighted to discover that Severus was in fact, a direct descendant of Helga Hufflepuff herself.
“Why Severus, surely you are not ashamed to be descended from one our esteemed founders?”
“Not as such no, but Hufflepuff Albus? For Merlin’s sake.”
“I think if you study this tree a little closer Severus, you will find you are also quite closely linked with Godrick Gryffindor. Does that ease your disappointment any? Severus, Helga was a great and powerful witch in her time, Hufflepuffs have a great many hidden traits that many are not aware of. You should be proud to be a descendant of hers.”
Severus was not really listening. Once the Headmaster pointed out his ancestry to Godric Gryffindor, he’d turned pale and slumped into his chair. “Why could it not have been Slytherin, or even Ravenclaw? Why those two?”
“Are you saying you dislike those two particular founders Severus? You seem to get along with them quite well in the wall, and both speak highly of you.”
“I do like them, well their portrait selves anyway. I just did not think to be descended from them. Still, I suppose it means something that I am in fact descended from two of the founders. Are you mentioned on there?”
“Indeed I am, I too am descended from Godric Gryffindor.”
“Only from one founder Albus?” The Potions Master asked, not trying too hard to not sound superior.
The older wizard gave him a wry look. “No Severus, just the one.” He answered with a peeved expression.
Severus, now over the shock of having combined Gryffindor/Hufflepuff blood in his veins, was now looking quite smug that he had twice as much founder hereditary than the Headmaster.
“Well this tree at least explains why certain witches and wizards are more powerful than others. So tell me Severus, how does it feel knowing you are related to Mr Potter? Also the Weasleys, our dear Professors Sprout and Flitwick, oh, and even Miss Granger is on here. It would appear that Rowena Ravenclaw is her ancestor. Miss Granger apparently has indeed got wizarding blood in her veins from way back.” ”
Severus’ smug expression dropped and he paled again. Snatching up the parchment, he rolled it up and placed it in his desk drawer, then removed a bottle of fire whiskey from his drinks cabinet. “Don’t you have a divination Professor to speak with.” He stated acerbically.
The Headmaster paled to the same shade as Severus and left the room in a huff.
Severus merely smirked and poured himself a drink. The smirk fell as he thought of the recent revelations on Sky’s family tree. Sky was closely related to the Malfoy’s. Close enough that when the Wizongamet was finally finished tearing Fudge apart, it would be proven without a doubt that Sky had more rights to the Malfoy fortunes than Lucius or Draco. More than likely the Malfoy estates would be automatically handed over to Sky whether she objected to it or not. This was surely going to put the kneazle among the owls.
Albus sat brooding behind his desk. How on earth was he to persuade Sybill Trellawny to go with Sky into a Hogwarts’ wall and have her seers power tested?
Sky meanwhile woke up famished. “Hi Effy.” She said, stretching languidly in the bed. “Where’s Severus, I’m starving.”
“Sir is in the study. You want Effy should get him?”
“No, I’ll get up. Some food would be nice though.”
“Effy brings a light snack. Is dinner in one hour.”
After using the bathroom, Sky padded through to find Severus deep in thought. “What’s the matter?”
Severus looked up surprised, he’d not heard her enter the room. “I have just now received two missives from the Ministry and Gringotts. I can only assume the Headmaster has also received the same. It would seem we have caused something of a security breech with our unorthodox departure this afternoon. Aurors are at this moment on their way to Hogwarts to ensure we are not in possession of stolen goods, or in fact still at large somewhere in the bowels of Gringotts itself.”
“What! But all we took were some Galleons. I thought it was alright, I didn’t know it was stealing.”
“Sky you have taken nothing that did not belong to you. It is merely that only a very select few know of your ability to use the doors. As far as that Goblin knew, we entered the bathroom and did not return. I dare say a thorough search of the vaults was in order once we were discovered missing. Albus, I was expecting you.”
“The Ministry and several Gringott representatives are at this moment entering the gates Servers. I am afraid Sky that you will need to prove you aptitude for moving from one place to another via the use of doors, otherwise we may all find ourselves under threat of Askaban.” The headmaster said, though his eyes crinkled slightly with amusement.
Severus seemed amused also, whilst Sky looked at them wide eyed.
As soon as Albus opened the door to admit the Aurors, followed by several Goblins, she turned and fled into the wall, slamming the door behind her.
Severus and Albus stood back, both with sly grins on their faces as one burly auror immediately pulled open Severus’ bedroom door and found … a bedroom.
He and several others searched the bedroom and bathroom thoroughly, leaving a trail of mess and destruction behind them.
“Where did she go?” One of them demanded.
“Had you asked me in the first place, I could have saved you the bother of having to destroy my accommodations.” Severus said dryly. “Move out of the way you imbecile and I shall bring her through. And do not think to intimidate my wife while she is here, you will only embarrass yourself and I will personally see to it that you suffer most terribly for your efforts.”
“Mr Snape, do not threaten me.” The auror said. “I am a Ministry official and as such I …”
“As a Ministry official auror Prod, you will be aware of the fact that our Minister is now under arrest and undergoing intensive investigations as to his activities concerning Mrs Snape’s property. She has done nothing other than leave the bank via a route as yet unknown to you. So far you have done nothing to make us believe you are anything but a threat to ourselves and Mrs Snape. I would advise you to learn patience and respect my man, that way all will be explained.”
He turned to Severus. “Severus, would you mind bringing your wife back please.”
Severus gave the aurors and goblins a haughty look and opened the bedroom door again. He gave them just enough time to see that the door led to somewhere entirely different to the bedroom, then entered and closed the door behind him.
“Sky, it’s me, where are you?”
“In the kitchen.”
He found her on the floor in the corner of the kitchen, crouched down with her arms round her knees.
“Foolish witch.” He said tenderly, as he moved towards her and stooped to lift her to her feet. “Sky, you have nothing to fear I promise you. Just come and prove to them your ability with the doors. They need know nothing else, I have already given them something of a surprise when I allowed them a brief glimpse of the living room as I came through. I dare say they are now in our bedroom tearing it apart trying to find us.”
“No. They can’t do that Severus, it’s private. And my books, what if they see my books in your study?” She asked, knowing they would not be able to explain dark magic books being in their possession.
“I have already removed anything that may be incriminating and placed it in here. Right now the Headmaster is on his own trying to explain where we are.”
He knew that would spur her into action and led her back to his study.
“Mrs Snape. Where did you go? Do you not realise it is a crime to attempt to escape Ministry investigation?” One of the aurors said.
Severus stood in front of his wife and glared menacingly at the auror. “Did I not already say what would happen if you tried to intimidate my wife. She is here now, that is proof enough that is not trying to avoid anyone. Now, if you will all stand back, I am certain She will be willing to prove once and for all that we left the vaults in a perfectly respectable, if not unorthodox manner. Sky, would you mind giving access to the bathroom we used to depart Gringotts.”
Sky nodded and opened the door again.
The three goblins stepped forward at Severus’ request and looked cautiously inside. One by one they entered, returning several minutes later and looking at Sky suspiciously.
“This is not good news Mrs Snape. The fact you have somehow gained unlimited access to the vaults puts our security in grave danger.”
“I do not see how.” Albus said. “So long as Mrs Snape takes an oath to never use that access unless accompanied by a Gringotts official, there will be no breech of security.”
The goblins conferred for a few minutes, then turned back to the headmaster.
“This will have to be confirmed with our board of directors, but I believe a life oath will be acceptable.”
“A what?” Sky asked.
“An oath that would claim your life Mrs Snape, should you ever attempt to gain access to our vaults with intent to purloin that which is not yours.”
Severus and Albus looked aghast at the goblins demands, but Sky surprised them.
“I can do that, so long as you are agreeable to me returning here whenever I have visited my vault. I do not like your carts. I don’t mind going down there through a door in the bank itself if that’s what you want. I will take your life oath. I have no intention of taking anything that is not mine.”
The goblins were happy with her acquiescence and said they would contact her as soon as they had spoken with their superiors.
“Sky do you even know what a life oath is?” Severus asked her worriedly.
“Yes of course I do. Rowena and Sal told me about them and Godric showed me how they were done. It’s not a problem Severus, I know what it involves and I don’t intend to take anything I’m not supposed to.”
Severus was still unsure, but his thoughts were interrupted again by the burley auror, Prod.
“Mrs Snape, you may have hoodwinked the goblins, but we are Ministry aurors and the fact you have free access to Gringotts, and most likely have been entering vaults for heavens knows how long puts you under suspicion of larceny, breaking and entering and trespass. We are authorised to arrest you and detain you in Askaban until such time as you are proved innocent of these charges.”
